Do racehorses even know they’re ‘racing’ each other? It’s unlikely

Cathrynne Henshall, Charles Sturt University

When racing season arrives, everyone becomes an expert on the horses that are the stars of the spectacle.

TV personalities, professional pundits and form guides talk confidently about the favourite’s “will to win”. In close races, the equine contestants “battle it out”, demonstrating “heart”, “grit” and “determination”.

But do horses even know they are in a race, let alone have a desire to win it? Do they understand what it means when their nose is the first one to pass the post?

Based on decades of experience and everything we know about horse behaviour, I think the most plausible answer is “no”.

From the horse’s perspective

From a horse’s perspective, there are few intrinsic rewards for winning a race.

Reaching the end might mean relief from the pressure to keep galloping at high speed and hits from the jockey’s whip, but the same is true for all the horses once they pass the finishing post. If the race is close, the horse that eventually wins might even be whipped more often in the final stages than horses further back in the field.

So while being first to reach the winning post can be crucially important to the horse’s human connections, there is very little direct, intrinsic benefit to the horse that would motivate it to voluntarily gallop faster to achieve this outcome.

So does a horse even know it’s in a race? Again, the answer is likely “no”.

Running (cantering or galloping) is a quintessential horse behaviour and horses voluntarily run together in groups when given the opportunity – even in races without jockeys. However, there are a number of reasons to think horses have not evolved a desire to “win” during a group gallop.

Horses are social animals. In the wild, to minimise their individual exposure to predators, they synchronise their movement with other horses in their group.

This synchronisation includes maintaining similar speeds to other group members (to keep the group together), being alert to the positions of their own body and their neighbours’ to avoid collisions, and adapting their speed to the terrain and environmental cues that indicate upcoming danger or obstacles. In the wild, “winning” – that is, arriving first, long before other group members – could even be a negative, exposing the “winner” to an increased risk of predation.

This collective behaviour is the opposite of what owners, trainers and punters want from horses during a race.

The horse’s preferences (and how riders override them)

Horse races depend on two horse-related factors: the horse’s innate tendency to synchronise with other horses, and its ability to be trained to ignore these tendencies in response to cues from the jockey during a race.

Trainers and jockeys also harness the preferences of individual horses. Some horses are averse to bunching up with others during the race, so jockeys let them move to the front of the field (these are “front runners”). Other horses seek the security of the group, so jockeys let them remain in the bunch until closer to the winning post (these are “come-from-behind” winners).

Jockeys use several different interventions to override the horse’s innate tendency to synchronise. These might include:

directing the horses to travel much closer to the other horses (risking the sometimes fatal injuries we sometimes see at the track)

travelling at speeds not of the horse’s choosing (usually at far higher speeds and for longer durations, and often maintained by use of the whip)

preventing the horse from changing course to adapt its position relative to other horses in the field (directing its path via pressure on the mouth from the bit or taps from the whip).

During the early stages of a race, jockeys rely on horses’ innate desire to remain with the group to ensure they maintain the physical effort required to keep in touch with the front runners. This tendency may then be overruled so the horse will act independently of the group, leave it behind and come to the front to hopefully win.

No concept of being in a race

So horses most likely have no concept of being in a “race”, where the goal of their galloping is to get to a certain location on the track before any of the other horses. However, they undoubtedly know what it’s like to be in a race. That is, they learn through prior experience and training what is likely to happen and what to do during a race.

And with jockeys and trainers who understand the individual preferences of their horses to maximise their chances during the race, there will always be one horse that reaches that part of the track designated the winning post before the other horses in the group.

But as for winning horses understanding they are there to “win”? It’s far more likely it is the combination of natural ability, physical fitness and jockey skill that accounts for which horse wins, rather than any innate desire by that horse to get to the winning post before the other horses.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. We know 29 per cent of Aussies are open to travelling to new destinations this year to keep costs down, and we hope by spotlighting these deserving destinations, all of which are extremely accessible, the awards inspire Aussies to explore and connect with regional destinations beyond the typical tried and tested.”

Unlikely trio decodes Mary Queen of Scots' secret letters

An international trio of codebreakers have made history by decoding and deciphering a treasure trove of lost letters written by none other than Mary Queen of Scots.

The unlikely team - consisting of a computer scientist, a physicist, and a musician - have a passion for historical ciphers and have been working together for 10 years.

The letters were assumed lost until they were discovered in Paris, in the National Library of France. The documents and their unusual symbols had been neglected in a mislabelled folder until the trio got to the bottom of them and revealed their true origin. It was only when the code had been broken that it was possible to identify the author as Mary.

George Lasry, the team’s computer scientist and cryptographer, is a member of the DECRYPT Project - an organisation with the aim of digitising, transcribing, and identifying historical ciphers.

It didn’t take long for the team to realise the letters were written in French, not Italian, once they began working on the unique ciphers. They noted the use of feminine form verbs and adverbs, and mentions of captivity, as well as one codebreaking keyboard: Walsingham.

“We were expecting Italian because that is what the catalogue said, but then we started to see some French words - 'ma liberté' (my freedom) - and sentences no-one would write if they were free," Lasry explained to Good Morning Scotland.

“So we knew it was someone in captivity, and some of the language was in feminine form, so it was a woman,” he went on. “She also wrote 'mon fils' - my son - so it was a woman in captivity with a son.

"We thought 'this is too crazy', it can't be Mary Stuart. But then we saw the word 'Walsingham' and we knew Francis Walsingham was the spymaster of Queen Elizabeth I, so we concluded it was from Mary.

"It was very difficult to believe at the start so it was a very exciting moment."

Mary, who spent the last 19 years of her life in English captivity, was able to smuggle her letters out via trusted visiting courtiers. Said letters, amounting to around 50,000 words in total, have offered new insight into Mary’s time in captivity.

"We have cracked more difficult codes, and we have deciphered an occasional letter from a king or queen, but nothing compared to 50 new letters from one of the most famous historical figures,” Lasry said of their historic accomplishment.

While it is believed that other letters may still be hiding out there for the next team of enthusiastic researchers to discover, this batch is set to keep historians and researchers busy for some time yet.

“In our paper, we only provide an initial interpretation and summaries of the letters," Lasry explained, “a deeper analysis by historians could result in a better understanding of Mary's years in captivity.

"It would also be great, potentially, to work with historians to produce an edited book of her letters deciphered, annotated, and translated."

Images: Getty

Queen Elizabeth’s “unlikely friendship” with Tom Cruise

Queen Elizabeth II really enjoyed meeting Tom Cruise in the weeks before her death that she organised to have him celebrate her Platinum Jubilee.

The late British monarch “really hit it off” with the Top Gun star but the pair were unable to rekindle at the Platinum Jubilee due to the Queen’s mobility issues.

However, the Queen was adamant on seeing Tom again that she organised a tour of Windsor Castle.

“The Queen let it be known that she was really disappointed not to have met Tom at the pageant, so he was invited to have a special tour of Windsor Castle with everything laid on for him. Afterwards, just the two of them had tea together,” the source said.

Tom enjoyed his time at the castle that he was also given the opportunity to fire a ceremonial gun.

“She loved seeing him and they really hit it off, so much so that she invited him back for lunch. He was even allowed to fly in by helicopter,” the source continued.

Unfortunately, the lunch never happened with the Queen passing away at the age of 96 on September 8.

Tom has previously spoken of his admiration for Queen Elizabeth saying everything she has achieved are historic.

“She’s just a woman that I greatly admire. I think she is someone who has tremendous dignity and I admire her devotion. What she has accomplished has been historic,” he said at the time.

Images: Getty

The “unlikely culprit” worsening lung disease unequally

Bronchiectasis (bron-kee-ek-tah-sis) is a chronic lung disease caused by widening of the airways in the lungs.

As well as making breathing more difficult and coughing more common, it can lead to repeated flare-ups of lung infections.

An international team of researchers based in Singapore has identified a bacteria, previously thought harmless in the lungs, that can be responsible for bronchiectasis flare-ups.

According to their paper in Cell Host & Microbe, Neisseria bacteria, and specifically the species Neisseria subflava, worsens bronchiectasis.

Neisseria are known to cause meningitis and gonorrhoea, but while they’d been found in lungs, they’ve previously not been thought to cause infections.

“This discovery is significant because it can change how we treat our bronchiectasis patients with this bacterium,” says senior author Professor Sanjay Chotirmall, a researcher from the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine at Nanyang Technical University, Singapore.

“Doctors will now need to think about Neisseria as a potential ‘culprit’ in patients who are worsening despite treatment, and to conduct tests to identify those who may be harbouring this type of bacteria in their lungs.”

While it affects people of every age and ethnicity, bronchiectasis prevalence increases as age does, and it’s up to four times more common among Asian people than white or black people.

“We hope that early identification will lead to personalised therapy, and consequently, better disease outcomes for Asian patients with this devastating disease,” Chotirmall says.

The researchers examined the lung microbiomes of 225 bronchiectasis patients from Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, and Dundee, in Scotland.

They found that Neisseria subflava “dominated” the microbiome of Asian patients with worsening conditions.

They then tested this bacteria in cell cultures and mice, showing that it caused cell disruption and thus inflammation and immune disfunction in lungs.

“It is encouraging to see that we have made headway in identifying the Neisseria bacteria species as the cause of worsening bronchiectasis, the unlikely culprit that was originally not considered to be a threat,” says co-author Professor Wang De Yun, from the National University of Singapore’s Yong Loo Lin School of Medicine.

“This comes as a strong reminder that we should not be too complacent when it comes to doing research and exercise more proactiveness in exploring various possibilities, as every seemingly innocent element could be a source of threat to our bodies and overall health.”

This article originally appeared on cosmosmagazine.com and was written by Ellen Phiddian.

Image: Shutterstock

Unlikely classmates: Olivia spotted in same row as another Aussie icon

An Australian icon has shared their primary school class photo, which features a young Olivia Newton-John before she shot to stardom.

The photo also unearthed the little known fact that Olivia went to school with another giant of the Australian entertainment industry: Daryl Braithwaite.

Just days after Olivia died from breast cancer, Braithwaite, 73, shared the black-and-white class photo taken at Christ Church Grammar School in Melbourne in 1961.

“This is a lovely shot to look back at when Olivia was at (school) with all her friends back in 1961. Olivia is 2nd from the right and 3rd row from the bottom,” wrote Braithwaite, who is in the same row on the very far left.

He added, “She also loved all animals and was a beautiful soul who left a legacy that will endure forever.”

His post was flooded with comments, as people couldn't believe Daryl and Olivia's friendship went all the way back to primary school.

One person said, "Who would of thought that two of Australia's greatest ever singers would come out of that class photo."

Braithwaite has previously opened up about how the duo were briefly “boyfriend and girlfriend” while at the same school, before Newton-John moved to London in her teenage years.

“She was one of the prettiest girls in the class, (we were) 11 or 12 I think,” he told The Morning Show in 2017.

“I don’t know how, we must have sat next to each other and thought, ‘Oh yeah that’s good’ and we were talking and then we held hands and then it was over.”

After their fleeting romance, Braithwaite said that the pair always stayed friends.

He told Now to Love in 2020, “It is one of those friendships where there was a decade, or maybe more, where we didn’t speak to each other, mainly because we were too busy or whatever, but over the last year or so I have made more contact with her than ever before, and she is lovely, she really is.”

"Beauty from ashes": The unlikely love story to emerge from devastating US shooting

It's one of the most unlikely places for romance to blossom.

But for Lasamoa Lanier, what was the most traumatic and devastating night of her life also became the night she met her future husband.

On July 20th 2012, Lasamoa and her then fiancé AJ Boik attended the midnight screening of Dark Knight Rises in Colorado.

Just after the opening scenes, a gunman opened fire in the cinema which claimed the lives of 12 people and wounded 70.

Among the deceased was Lasamoa's 18-year-old fiancé, who died at the scene after sustaining two fatal gun shot injuries.

Officer Cody Lanier, a resource officer at Lasamoa's high school, was one of the officers who rushed to the scene to try and assist on that horrifying day.

Lasamoa was trying to cope with the grief of losing her fiancé, while Officer Lanier was reeling from the pain of not being able to save all those who perished.

He also was the officer who had to break the tragic news to Boik's mother telling her that her son probably did not survive calling "it the absolutely the worst singular event I could imagine as a cop."

For Lasamoa, she spent years trying to heal from the tragedy and found various ways to cope.

Part of her healing included writing letters to the police officers, who were also traumatised by the massacre, thanking them for risking their own lives while trying to save others.

She delivered the letter to Officer Cody, and the pair decided to go out for lunch.

What was supposed to be an hour long lunch turned into an entire evening and the beginning of a special relationship.

"In a way, La kind of filled this gap," Cody said. "Beyond that it was just this connection. Every day since she turned into my best friend."

"I am pretty sure there is not a thing that I want to do where she is not involved," he said.

On October 3rd 2021, the pair made it offical and tied the knot in a beautiful wedding ceremony which Lasamoa calls the "best day of her life".

The couple are still swept up in their post wedding bliss, as they reflect on how they found love in the most unlikely circumstances.

"It's like a sleepover with my best friend all the time. It's crazy. Beauty from ashes, man," Cody said. "I don't know what I would do without her."

Lasamoa shares the same feelings, as she counts her blessings each day.

"Sometimes I stop and think about it and I am like oh you are able to find love again," she said.

"I have been through this and been through that but life is still happening."

Lasamoa still journals to help her heal from the trauma, and shared a letter she wrote to her late fiancé AJ on Instagram.

She wrote, "I don't know if you had any intentions of leading him [Cody] to me, but I really appreciate you sending him to me."

Unlikely product that makes grout sparkle with no scrubbing

A TikToker has revealed an unlikely cleaning product typically used in the kitchen that is super effective at cleaning grout. In fact, you don’t even need to scrub it.

Azure MacCannell, who goes by the handle @livecomposed on TikTok, discovered the Healthier Home brand degreaser worked on her tiled floor after an accidental spill.

The video that shows how effective it was has gone viral with 3.5 million views.

@livecomposed Effortless grout cleaning! #cleantok #cleaningtiktok #cleaning #cleaninghacks #cleaningproducts #groutcleaning #hhambassador ♬ abcdefu - GAYLE

To use the degreaser as a cleaner Azure said she "poured it on. Let it sit one minute and just wiped it off."

The cleaning guru used a mop to wipe off the product after applying it to the floor. This cleaning tip has been liked 156,000 times and sparked plenty of discussion.

Some viewers revealed using degreaser as a grout cleaner is a well-known cleaning secret in the fast-food industry.

"Fast food places add degreaser to their mops all the time. It works," one TikToker said.

If you can't get your hands on the degreaser from Healthier Home, which doesn't appear to ship to Australia, other followers insist other degreasers will work just as well.

Like with any cleaning advice you see on TikTok you might want to test your degreaser on a small spot first, in case it's not suitable for your floors. It’s also best practice to read the information on the bottle, in case its not safe for use on particular materials.

Grant and Chezzi Denyer open up on their unlikely romance

Grant Denyer has opened up about the “scandalous” way his relationship with Chezzi began.

He appeared with Chezzi on the latest episode of the podcast Separate Bathrooms with Cam and Ali Daddo, where the couple spoke about their unlikely romance.

The Dancing With The Stars contestant revealed that he first began seeing Chezzi while she was his producer on Sunrise and when they were both in relationships with other people.

However, he admitted that their relationship didn’t start with an instant attraction and that they even “hated each other”.

“I was a young, ambitious pain in the arse who thought he knew everything. And she was a creative who thought you know that she could push me around. And I didn’t like that. So we clashed a lot,” he told the hosts.

Despite their frosty start, Denyer said it all changed during the Melbourne Cup one year.

He said they “brushed hands accidentally” and he felt a “tingling sensation” that was “straight out of a Hollywood movie”.

“I was like, I had this instant light bulb reaction - ‘oh my god, I can’t live without this woman’,” he said.

But, with them both being in relationships, Denyer admitted it was a “bit scandalous”.

“Yeah, love comes in different shapes and forms and times … sometimes convenient, sometimes not.”

Chezzi added that they were both “shocked” when they realised they had feelings for each other.

“We did not like each other. I kept saying, ‘please, can I produce anybody else at Sunrise other than Grant because he’s always racing cars. He’s off here. You know, doing this weekend. He turns up really tired. Maybe a bit hungover …’ It was doing my head in. So we really struggled,” she recalled.

The couple tied the knot in 2010 and now share three daughters: Sailor, 10, Scout, six, and Sunday, one.

Image: Getty Images

Surprised mum finds unlikely key to great night's sleep

A western Sydney mum has an amazing recommendation for sleep-deprived parents: their child’s sleeping aid.

Specifically, the Glow Dreaming device. New mum Shauna struggled to get more than two hours’ sleep at night during the first few months of her daughter Tara’s life, until she decided to try the baby sleep aid she’d bought for her bub.

She found that it worked right away, telling 9Honey Parenting, "I woke up from a nap two and a half hours later. I couldn't believe I slept the entire time. I thought 'how does that even happen?’”

She originally bought the device to help improve Tara’s sleep after she entered the four-month regression period. Shauna said of the device, "My friend recommended Glow Dreaming to me and I bought it the second she mentioned it. The pink noise gave her something consistent to listen to the whole night and the red light worked.”

She found that it really helped Tara sleep. The device uses LED light and pink noise to slow and regular brain waves and prepare you for deep sleep. After the device worked such wonders for Tara, Shauna thought that it couldn’t hurt to give it a go.

She said of her decision to try the product for herself, "I've never been a good sleeper. So then adding the extra layer of the baby who could wake at any minute, I was getting a lot of anxiety throughout the night because I just couldn't fall asleep.”

Since she started using it herself, Shauna’s sleep has improved significantly. She told 9Honey, "It puts me to sleep so quickly. It gives me something to concentrate on so if I do have to get up and deal with Tara, I come back to bed and it's the exact same environment as when I left.”

She now gets around eight hours of sleep a night, and even her husband loves the device now, finding that he wakes up in the mornings feeling “really refreshed”.

Shauna isn’t alone, with Glow Dreaming reporting a 10 per cent increase in sales to adults in the past 12 months, with adults now accounting for almost 20 per cent of total sales.

The devices are particularly popular with FIFO (Fly-in, Fly-out) workers who are constantly trying to manage interrupted sleep schedules.

Image: Catherine Delahaye

Unlikely album makes history

Image: ABC News

An album made up entirely of tweets and squawks from Australian birds has made history by entering the Top Five ARIA album charts, surpassing both Mariah Carey and ABBA.

Titled Songs of Disappearance, the album features birdsongs of 53 of the rarest species in Australia that are on the brink of extinction. It is the first album of its kind to chart in the ARIA Top Five albums, and has sold more than 3,000 copies.

Anthony Albrecht, a PhD student at Charles Darwin University (CDU) and co-founder of The Bowerbird Collective, is part of a group of academics, musicians and conservationists behind the project.

"It's absolutely incredible to have knocked Michael Buble, Mariah Carey and a whole bunch of other really famous artists out of the [top five]," he said.

"In some ways, it's not surprising, because I believe Australians generally are so much more attuned now to the environmental crisis that we're all facing — and that the unique and incredible species that also call Australia home are facing."

The title track, arranged by Simone Slattery, includes all 53 of the endangered species featured in the album. The tracks were recorded by David Stewart Nature Sound, a wildlife sound recordist, over his decades-long career.

Mr Stewart's collection consists of thousands of bird calls that have been recorded over a period of 40 years, while travelling across remote parts of Australia.

"Some of the recordings are so brief because he [Mr Stewart] waited hours out in the bush to hear a peep out of some of these species," Mr Albrecht said.

Mr Albrecht said he was pleased Songs of Disappearance resonated with so many Australians."I think it's incredibly important to tell stories about nature in a way that is going to get people really emotionally involved," he said.

Stephen Garnett, a co-creator of the album and professor of conservation at CDU, helped produce a landmark extinction report from BirdLife Australia that inspired the project.

"They've been singing for millions of years … and now they're going, and there's a whole lot that we're not going to have with us if we don't do something about them."

Proceeds from the album's sales will go towards BirdLife Australia's conservation efforts.

Cruises unlikely to return by Christmas

Image: Getty

Cruise bosses have rebuffed the idea Australians could be back on board cruise lines by Christmas, after the health Minister Greg Hunt suggested he might lift the ban on the vessels within the week.

While industry bosses said they welcomed Mr Hunt’s announcement he was “reviewing” the ban which is in place until December 18th, claiming more notice is needed to prepare for guests. He suggests Easter is a more likely time frame.

All cruise lines – Royal Caribbean, Princess, Cunard, Carnival and P&O – have already cancelled sailings for the rest of the year and even far into 2022 as March. The Cruise Lines International Association calling the ongoing lack of a plan “absurd”.

Mr Hunt said he was working with states and territories on a plan, and NSW authorities confirmed they have met with cruise bosses.

“I expect to be able to make a decision on cruise ships in the coming weeks once we’ve got the medical information, but it will require at least one state or territory to partner on that,” Mr Hunt says.

“But we would like to see cruising back on before Christmas.”

Cruise Lines International Association managing director Joel Katz said it’s not as simple as the Federal Government just lifting the ban, as cruise lines need several months to prepare and bring ships back from other parts of the world.

However, he is hopeful cruise lines could return before the end of Australian summer. Throughout the pandemic, cruise bosses have criticised the government’s lack of a plan to kickstart the $5 billion industry, which also supports 18,000 Aussie jobs.

Travel agents, food suppliers, maritime firms and on-shore tour and tourism firms also suffer a knock-on effect, losing revenue.

Cruising has resumed in other parts of the world and now Australian citizens and permanent residents can leave the country and return if they live in NSW and Victoria, it's possible to take a cruise overseas
