"Out-of-touch" Project stars slammed over clash with renter advocate

Social media users have slammed The Project hosts, following their recent interview with a renter advocate who encourages Aussies struggling with the housing crisis to squat in empty homes.

Jordan van den Berg, founder of the S*** Rentals website shared a video over the weekend outside a rundown house in Chadstone, Melbourne, saying: “Are you sick of rich people hoarding empty houses during a housing crisis? I know I am."

“Here’s how you can do something about it.”

He then encouraged people to submit information on empty homes in their suburbs via a form on his website, which he plans to promote on his socials so those struggling to find a home could squat in them.

“Fun fact – squatting in Australia is not necessarily illegal, which is the best type of legal, especially if the front door doesn’t actually lock," he said.

On Monday, he appeared on The Project to talk about his controversial plans, and was grilled by the show's hosts.

“I know we’re in a pretty serious housing crisis, but do you really think encouraging people to squat in private properties is the way to fix it?" asked co-host Sarah Harris.

“Let me answer your question by asking you a question. Do you think it’s right we have thousands of vacant, abandoned homes while we have people living on the street?” van de Berg replied.

Harris said she didn’t and asked whether the solving the housing crisis should be focused on policy instead.

Later in the interview, panellist Steve Price casted his doubts on whether there actually were a lot of vacant homes, but van de Berg replied that he'd received over 300 submissions from Aussies about empty homes in their suburbs.

van de Berg also said that desperate people are even squatting in abandoned properties, and added: “If someone needs a house, they can reach out to me and I’ll send them [details about] an empty home."

Harris was shocked that people would “basically camp out in abandoned houses with no power" which van den Berg argued that “camping out inside” was likely better than sleeping on the streets or in a park.

Co-host Waleed Aly then asked whether van de Berg was encouraging people to break the law, but he pointed out that squatting – done properly – isn’t technically illegal.

The interview has been slammed on social media, with Writer and comedian John Delmenico posting on X: “Watching the rich out-of-touch panel on the Project realise in real time that not everyone is rich is so bizarre.

"Especially the part where Pingers has to explain that being in a house is safer than sleeping on the street. How do they host the news with no connection to reality?”

Others agreed mocking the panellists’ shock that “shelter without electricity is better than no shelter with no electricity”.

“She was laughing at the fact that ppl would camp out in abandoned houses with no power/water, until he put her in her place by reminding her they’re better off camping under shelter than outside. Mic drop moment," one wrote.

“Homelessness exists … it’s quite a big problem actually," another added.

However, a few others agreed with the Project hosts.

“Encouraging people to squat, who does he think he is?" one wrote.

“He thinks he’s doing a good thing, but he’s given absolutely no critical thought to the implications of encouraging people to take over ‘empty homes’," another added.

Leo Patterson Ross, chief executive of the Tenants Union of NSW, said that van den Berg was “drawing attention to issues that government should be acting on”.

“In the middle of a housing crisis with growing levels of homelessness, we should be looking to ensure homes are not left vacant,” Patterson Ross said.

“If a person leaves a property unattended and empty for 12 years, then I think many of us would agree it seems fair that the community can reclaim usage to provide a home, whether that be individuals or government.”

Image: The Project

"I've got goosebumps": Samantha Murphy honoured by touching act

Samantha Murphy was last seen leaving her East Ballarat home to go for her usual morning run on February 4, a run that she never got to complete.

Her disappearance gripped the nation for the past month, with local volunteers, specialist forces and detectives all working together to try and figure out just what happened to the Ballarat mum.

Now, Victoria Police allege that she was murdered by 22-year-old Patrick Orren Stephenson, a tradie and the son of former AFL player Orren Stephenson, who was arrested last Wednesday.

On Friday, Felicity Ryan put a call out on social media to see if anyone was interested in taking part in a community run to honour Murphy and complete the run she didn't get to finish.

The post was met with overwhelming support, with Ryan telling 7NEWS: “I arrived and there was a handful of people... then the cars just started piling in."

The group stood in silence for a minute in honour of Murphy's memory before heading off on a 7km run around Ocean Grove at 5.30am on Sunday.

“I’ve got goosebumps talking about it now, it was the most heartfelt morning you could imagine ... there was lots of hugging ... there were lots of tears,” Ryan said.

Ryan said that she hopes the run can become an annual event on February 4 or the long weekend.

Detectives are currently doing everything they can to try and find Murphy's body, but Stephenson has so far refused to cooperate with police.

He is due to return to court for a committal mention on August 8.

Images: ABC News/ Victoria Police

9 things you should never touch in someone else’s house

A hands-off approach

Nothing like a global pandemic to critically alter your lifelong and intrinsic sanitary practices, huh? And while we know coronavirus does not spread easily from surfaces, there are still plenty of other germs and bacteria that do. And it’s not always a matter of good hygiene – sometimes it’s just a matter of good manners!

The door

Of course, you can actually touch the door, but you should never do so to let yourself into someone else’s home without them, or without being invited. Always knock or ring the bell, even if it’s been left unlocked, unless someone has expressly told you that you don’t have to.

And please, don’t show up knocking earlier than expected – it could be a huge inconvenience to your host.

Their bathroom

As with most of the things on this list, you should avoid this unless you’re specifically invited. Try not to stray after your trip to the bathroom for a look around – it’s definitely off-limits if you don’t have permission or are going in without your host knowing. Of course, there are exceptions, as it may not be so serious an offence if you know the person very well, or if one lives in a shared living space, a studio, or an apartment with limited space.

And on that note, it’s best to wait until you’re invited to sit or relax on someone’s bed. Many people also find that a bedroom is a convenient place to store coats if there are guests coming over, but wait until they offer instead of assuming it’s OK.

The floor - with your shoes on

Depending on personal preferences or cultural norms, many households have a no-shoes-inside policy. Take the tip from your host – if they’re wearing shoes in their house, you can probably assume it’s OK for you. When in doubt, ask what they would prefer.

Another place you shouldn’t be putting your feet? On the couch or coffee table. I can think of five good reasons you should ban shoes in the house, period.

The fridge and cupboards

This one might sound like it should go without saying, but some might not realize just how rude it is to help yourself to someone else’s food. If you’re hungry, let your host know, or suggest going out to eat. If you’re staying for a long time, your host will probably prepare and shop for food accordingly, but it’s a good idea to offer to bring or buy some groceries yourself. And if you came for dinner, eat what’s been prepared for you, and offer to bring a dish or wine to share.

If you have a restricted diet, let your host know beforehand and prepare a dish to bring if it’s difficult to accommodate. Offer to help cook, and lend a hand with the dishes and cleanup. Countertops are absolutely one of those things you should be cleaning every day, regardless.

The windows or thermostat

Always let your hosts set the thermostat number – it’s their house, after all, and they’re the ones paying the bill for it. If you’re really too cold, a better option might be to ask to borrow a jumper, or extra blankets if you’ll be staying overnight.

Too hot? Suggest an activity to help cool off, like going to a place with air conditioning. If you have a medical condition that makes you particularly sensitive to heat or cold, you should always inform your host ahead of time so you can make plans accordingly.

Drawers and cabinets

This one is definitely invasive of your host’s privacy. Don’t go rummaging for anything that’s not in plain sight or in the rooms your host is expecting you in. You might find it tempting to snoop, but the medicine cabinet is certainly off-limits.

Workspaces, mail, or bills

To go along with the last one, it’s always best to avoid snooping. In some homes, a guest bedroom might also double as a home office, so steer clear of using these spaces to store your things. You have no idea how they might have organised their things, so try to leave it as is. Not going through someone’s mail is basic manners!

Cigarettes or e-cigarettes

Unless your host is doing the same and gives you permission, you should never, ever start smoking a cigarette or e-cigarette in someone’s home. This rule is especially inflexible if there are children in the house. Not only can you expose them to the harmful ingredients and chemicals in cigarettes, but the effects – and the smell – can linger long after you’re gone.

If you can’t wait, excuse yourself to go outside, and try to move away from doors and windows so it doesn’t waft into the house. Removing the cigarette and cigar smell is quite the cumbersome task.

The Wi-Fi

Try to refrain from asking for the Wi-Fi password unless you’re a long-term guest or a very frequent visitor. If you’re asking at the beginning of a dinner party, it’s sending the message that you’d rather be on your phone. Try to stay off of your phone as much as possible to really have quality time when you’re visiting.

This article originally appeared on Reader's Digest.

She suffered burns over 85 percent of her body when a burning car crashed into her childcare centre in Sydney, leaving her with the loss of both feet, some fingers and her right ear.

A few years later, at the age of five, Sophie experienced a second car accident. While being pushed across a pedestrian crossing by her nanny near their Northern Beaches home in 2006, she was struck by a car. This devastating incident propelled her 18 metres from her wheelchair and resulted in a heart attack. Additionally, she sustained severe injuries, including a broken jaw, broken collarbone, nine broken ribs, punctured lungs, two fractured vertebrae and a brain injury.

Now, 17 years later, Sophie is preparing to marry her childhood sweetheart, Joseph Salerno. Their engagement was announced earlier this year in an exclusive interview with Australian Women's Weekly. The couple had been close friends since high school, and their transition from friendship to romance began after Sophie returned to Sydney from studying at a London university in 2020.

Joseph proposed to Sophie in their apartment with a scrapbook that chronicled their journey together. The final page of the scrapbook featured a photo of an engagement ring, and Joseph, dropping to one knee, asked, "Would you be my baby?" To which, Sophie happily ticked the "Yes" box on the back of the scrapbook.

The couple is set to tie the knot next October in the picturesque Hunter Valley, marking a beautiful chapter in Sophie Delezio's extraordinary life journey.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Australian Women’s Weekly (@womensweeklymag)

Images: Instagram

Uber driver shares touching moment with grieving passenger

A young Uber driver has shared the emotional interaction he had with a grieving mother.

James Bade, a 23-year-old from Sydney, shares clips from his best Uber driving moments on his TikTok, capturing honest moments with his passengers.

Bade's latest video has moved his followers to tears, as he drove around an older couple who broke down in tears at the end of their journey.

James captioned his video, "This job makes me cry sometimes,” as the video shows the elderly woman telling James, “You know what? Look after yourself.”

Her voice broke as she said, "You're a champion."

The couple then left the car, before the woman began tapping frantically on James' window as he winds it down.

“I lost my son last year,” she tells him through tears.

“And you remind me so much of my son.”

Bade unbuckles his seatbelt and hugs the woman through the window as she cries.

The woman, still sobbing, holds Mr Bade for a moment, telling him to “take care”.

“The world will take you wherever you want to go,” she tells him.

The comments section was flooded with emotional messages, showing that the interaction obviously touched his followers.

“You can tell she has so much love and nowhere for it to go,” one wrote.

“Actually crying … how lovely,” said another.

Another added, “This is just beautiful … you can just tell in her voice that she needed that so much.”

Sadly, not every one of James' passengers are as lovely, as he recently made headlines after a rude passenger talked down to him over his career choice and high school exam results.

Barry Du Bois shares emotional health update

Channel 10 star Barry Du Bois is currently battling Plasmacytoma Myeloma, a type of cancer that attacks the immune system.

The Aussie designer, 62, shared a heartfelt post about the importance of being open during such turbulent times.

“During a podcast last week, the host thanked me for being so open with my emotions,” he wrote.

“She said we really don’t know each other that well and to expose my feelings so openly [and] honestly was very brave to allow that vulnerability,” he continued.

“I explained that after being forced into the ring with terribly viscous opponents like cancer, it is not a scary thing for me to allow emotions to surface when sharing a painful story.

"So I don’t see it as brave and have learnt that expressing your emotions rather than suppressing [them] helps to self reflect and gain emotional resilience.”

The 62-year-old paired the post with a black and white photo of his arm hooked up to an IV drip as he lay in bed.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Barry Du Bois. “That name goes back four generations”: Paul Walker’s brother makes a touching tribute

Almost a decade after the world lost Fast & Furious star Paul Walker, his younger brother Cody Walker has paid heartfelt tribute with the birth of his third child.

Cody and his wife, Felicia, welcomed their son on April 30, with People magazine reporting that he weighed in at 7lbs 5oz. Felicia took to Instagram on May 2 to make an announcement, too, declaring that they’d had a boy, and writing “welcome to the clan, Barrett”.

Many took this as confirmation of his name, and rushed to congratulate the family on their new addition. Felicia had shared a picture of the newborn in the arms of his big brother, Colt, with the announcement, and fans were delighted to note that he was the image of a proud older sibling, beaming from ear to ear.

However, People magazine have now revealed that there was more to the story, and that the newborn Walker’s name is even closer to his father’s heart than anyone had anticipated.

It was a day after his birth that Cody and Felicia reached their decision, declaring their son’s name to be Paul Barrett Walker - naming him after Cody’s late brother.

"This November will mark 10 years since we lost my brother, Paul,” Cody told the publication, “and I just felt now was the appropriate time.”

He went on to share that he and their other brother - Caleb - were “both done having children”, and that the name held special meaning to all of them.

“My brother, Paul, was Paul William Walker IV and that name goes back four generations,” he explained. "Within the family, he went by ‘little Paul’ or ‘Paul 4,’ even though he quickly outgrew our father in height.

“It was important to me to have that name carry on.”

It isn’t the only move Cody has taken towards honouring his brother, having teamed up with Tyrese Gibson and Chris Lee to bright FuelFest to life - an automotive and motorsports festival showcasing car culture, with a portion of profits going towards Paul’s nonprofit Reach Out WorldWide, something that Cody views “as a part of Paul that he left behind.”

And in an echo of his message regarding his new son’s name, he noted that “it’s important to so many to see that part of his legacy live on.”

And Paul’s daughter, Meadow, has made her own moves towards furthering her father’s legacy, with a cameo appearance in Fast X - the tenth instalment in the Fast & Furious franchise.

“For me, this is super exciting,” she said of her involvement, “and he would be amazed that this is happening.”

Images: Instagram, Getty

Jock Zonfrillo's wife's touching words at private funeral

Late Masterchef judge Jock Zonfrillo has been laid to rest by his loved ones at a private funeral in Sydney.

His wife, Lauren Fried, was there with their four children - Eva, Sophie, Alfie, And Isla - as well as other members of the late chef’s family, who had flown in from Scotland and the United States to pay their respects.

Zonfrillo’s Masterchef co-hosts Melissa Leong and Andy Allen could also be spotted in pictures that circulated online after the service, alongside the likes of fellow Scot Jimmy Barnes, and chefs George Colombaris, Manu Feidel, Colin Fassnidge, Miguel Maestre, and Matt Moran.

Barnes was later joined by his daughter, Mahalia, and the two performed a touching rendition of ‘Amazing Grace’ for the service.

Lauren led their small procession of mourners into the chapel, with tartan draped across a shoulder, as an indigenous smoking ceremony took place, and bagpipes were played. Pictures revealed that Zonfrillo’s coffin had been adorned with the Royal Banner of Scotland, and topped with a bouquet of white roses and orchids.

It was a heartbreaking scene to witness, but it was Lauren’s words within the chapel that have struck a chord with mourners, as she paid tribute to her late husband.

“We are two halves that found each other at the exact moment in life when we were ready,” she said, according to The Daily Mail. “We were ready for that big love to live a life of adventure, to become parents together, to imagine extraordinary things and to actually make them happen.”

Zonfrillo’s daughter Ava - one of two from a former relationship - added that “it goes without saying that at the heart of everything you did was family.

“And one of the hardest things to accept is that you won’t be here to see ours grow.”

And to everyone, they added, “for those who crossed his path and became his mate or were lucky enough to be in this family, keep this proud Scot in your heart when you have your next whisky.”

No wake was held after the funeral, with one attendee informing The Daily Mail that “the family just wants it to happen without any of the attention his death has attracted, which has understandably been overwhelming.

“They're trying to keep it as personal as they can. It's critical they be given the space to do that.”

Images: Instagram

His parents opened a small zoo called the Queensland Reptile and Fauna Park, which later turned into the famed Australia Zoo.

Steve was very involved in the zoo, he helped with the animals’ daily feeding and care routines. For his sixth birthday, he was gifted a four-metre scrub python. By the age of nine, his father Bob had taught him proper reptile handling techniques, and the wildlife warrior wrested his first crocodile.

Although Steve cherished all animals, it was clear he had a soft spot for crocodiles. Throughout his adolescence and young adult years he volunteered for Queensland's East Coast Crocodile Management program. Hugh Jackman shares touching Mother's Day tribute

Hugh Jackman has shared a heart-warming tribute to his mum Grace in honour of Mother's Day.

After mending his once-distant relationship with his mother, the actor posted a photo of the pair on Instagram with the caption, "Happy Mother's Day to my dear Mum… and to all of you who are celebrating today".

Hugh is no stranger to sharing snaps of him with his mother online, following the pair's reconciliation after several years of estrangement.

The actor has spoken openly in the past about the difficult relationship, telling Woman's Weekly in 2012 that Hugh was just eight years old when his British mother returned to England.

She left him and his four siblings behind with their father, Christopher Jackman, in Sydney, and Hugh admitted it took him years to come to terms with it.

"At the time, it was difficult. One of the main things I remember is that horrible feeling that people were talking about you and looking at you because it was odd for the mother to leave," he confessed.

"For many years, I thought it was not going to be forever, so I clung on to that. Up until about the age of 12 or 13, I thought Mum and Dad would get back together. Finally realising it wasn't going to happen was probably the toughest time to be honest."

Despite leaving so abruptly, Hugh said he "never felt that my mum didn't love me" and added that he'd "spoken about it at length with her since".

"I know she was struggling. She was in hospital after I was born suffering from post-natal depression," he continued.

"And then you add five kids into the mix and the fact she had emigrated from England and there wasn't a support network for her here, plus the fact that Dad was at work all day - and you realise that as parents we make mistakes."
