Drug regulator investigates deaths tied to weight loss injections

<p>Australia's drug regulator is investigating further into three different deaths possibly linked to the use of Ozempic and other weight loss injections. </p> <p>Tim Ramsay, 58, started using Saxenda because he wanted to lose weight so he could confidently walk his daughter down the aisle. </p> <p>But, he tragically passed away just 19-days after he started taking the injections, and now his family want answers, after a coroner ruled his cause of death as undetermined. </p> <p>"I don't believe that anybody should die without an explanation, you just don't expire, there has got to be a reason for Tim's death," Ramsay's wife, Sue, told <em>60 Minutes</em>.</p> <p>"19 days between his first injection and the day he left us, alarm bells in our heads, in the TGA's heads, and the coroner's head should be ringing," his daughter Elyse said.</p> <p>Leonie Margetts is also looking for answers, and is angry at the ease in which the injections could be accessed, following her daughter's death after taking Ozempic injections she'd ordered online. </p> <p>Margetts' daughter Naomi wanted to be a mum, but was told she needed to lose weight to to have any chance of falling pregnant.</p> <p>"You just do not expect to find your daughter on her knees in front of the toilet bowl dead," Margetts said.</p> <p>"She was a week away from turning 40 and that's a big thing for any female, she was feeling very vulnerable," she added. </p> <p>The Therapeutic Goods Administration's Chief Medical Advisor, Professor Robyn Langham has responded, and told <em>60 minutes</em> that the TGA has a responsibility to the families of the deceased. </p> <p>"It's a very serious and a very tragic problem for the families that are concerned and we don't wish to minimise that at all," Langham said.</p> <p>She added that they are carefully monitoring reports of severe gastrointestinal side effects caused by the medication, and will withdraw the drug if necessary. </p> <p>"If we do see that there is a need to change the messaging or the information that goes with the drug or even in some cases to withdraw the drug, then we have the power to do so," Langham said.</p> <p>Some people have been using Ozempic for weightloss, which has caused it to "explode" in popularity.</p> <p>"I liken this to when the [Model] T Ford was first invented and suddenly we had changes in transportation and the horse and cart went," Professor of medicine and endocrinologist Dr Katherine Samaras said. </p> <p>But, the professor has warned that Ozempic is only approved in Australia for diabetes, and should only be used when supervised by a doctor. </p> <p>"We don't leave matches in the hands of children," she said.</p> <p>"We shouldn't leave these drugs in the hands of people, it has to be supervised."</p> <p><em>Images: 60 minutes</em></p>

“Worth the wait”: Jacinda Ardern ties the knot

<p dir="ltr">Jacinda Arden and her long-term partner Clarke Gayford have tied the knot, five years after getting engaged. </p> <p dir="ltr">The former New Zealand prime minister shared a series of loved-up photos from the big day, as she beamed from ear to ear as she embraced her new husband. </p> <p dir="ltr">Posting the photos to Instagram, she captioned the post, “13.01.24 Worth the wait”.</p> <p dir="ltr">Ardern, 43, and Gayford, 47, tied the knot at the Craggy Range vineyard in New Zealand’s Hawkes Bay region on Saturday, surrounded by their friends and family. </p> <p dir="ltr">The couple’s five-year-old daughter, Neve, accompanied her father down the aisle, wearing a dress made from her grandmother’s wedding dress.</p> <p dir="ltr">Jacinda wore a white halter neck gown by New Zealand designer Juliette Hogan, paired with a floor-length white veil and an all white bouquet. </p> <p dir="ltr">The wedding came after almost five years of engagement, with the former first couple originally planning to hold the ceremony in 2022 before the Covid pandemic forced the plans into disarray.</p> <p dir="ltr">“My wedding won’t be going ahead but I just join many other New Zealanders who have had an experience like that as a result of the pandemic,” she told reporters in January 2022, adding, “Such is life.”</p> <p dir="ltr">The couple began dating in 2014 after Gayford, a marine enthusiast and host of local fishing shows, contacted the then-Labour list MP about proposed legislation in 2013.</p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Image credits: Instagram - Felicity Jean Weddings</em></p>

$280 million lotto winner cuts ties with "greedy" family

<p>Scotland resident Gillian Bayford went from rags to riches in an instant when she won the equivalent of a $278.36 million jackpot in August 2012. </p> <p>Thinking luck was finally on her side, Bayford didn't expect the amount of drama that came with the life-changing prize. </p> <p>It all began just 15 months after her lucky win with then-husband Adrian, who she split with allegedly due to the stress of managing the jackpot. </p> <p>Not long after, she spent $1,324,304 to pay off her family's debt, which included money that her late father Ian McCulloch and her brother Colin owed over a series of failed business ventures according to <a href="https://www.businessinsider.com/woman-won-187m-lottery-severed-ties-greedy-family-2023-12" target="_blank" rel="noopener"><em>Business Insider</em></a>. </p> <p>“My dad and brother built up one company after another and then closed them down,” Bayford said. </p> <p>“I’ve bailed them out of every debt.”</p> <p>She continued to keep her family financially afloat spending a total of $37.31 million on them, and even bought her parents - who were broke and living in a caravan at the time - a $522,388 penthouse apartment in eastern Scotland. </p> <p>But, according to the <em>Mirror</em>, that wasn't enough and her father insisted that she should give her brother around $1.5 million, for a new play-centre business. </p> <p>She obliged, and instead of thanking her, Colin now drives Audis with private plates, owns a $546,000 house and reportedly stopped talking to his sister. He even got married to his girlfriend without inviting Bayford to the wedding. </p> <p>“They have lost touch with where they’ve come from,” Bayford told <em>The Sun</em>.</p> <p>“They’re rubbing people’s noses in it by flashing their cash, which I think is downright nasty.”</p> <p>At one point her father even tried to take control of her winnings and even take a piece of her business. </p> <p>“It’s upsetting and raw,” she told the publication. </p> <p>“The money was supposed to make everybody happy. But it’s made them demanding and greedy.” </p> <p>She added, "they brought our name into disrespect in the village, and we had people threatening to torch the family house.”</p> <p>Bayford said that despite it all she takes pride in herself "because I know I’ve taken them out of a situation.”</p> <p>The lotto winner officially cut ties with her family in 2016 after they called her an embarrassment, while her mum Brenda McCulloch claims she’s heartbroken over the lack of contact with her daughter and grandchildren.</p> <p>“Gillian says that we didn’t try and get in touch with them, but if I’d tried she wouldn’t have let me,” she said. </p> <p>Her mum also claimed that while her daughter was “generous,” the actual amount she gave her family was much lower. </p> <p>“Every word that comes out of their mouths is a lie. Wiggles star ties the knot

<p>Wiggles dancer Stephanie Di Coio has officially tied the knot with Dominic Field, a fellow dancer and nephew of blue Wiggle Anthony Field. </p> <p>Di Coio took to Instagram to share snippets from their intimate celebration on Saturday, after kicking off their ceremony at a church. </p> <p>"In case you wanted to see what me living my best life with my best people looks like... this is it!!!!" she wrote over the video posted on Instagram stories. </p> <p>Di Coio reposted a few stories from friends and family with photos and clips congratulating the pair as they walked out hand in hand, after saying their vows. </p> <p>The Wiggles dancer looked stunning in a low-cut silk gown, and had her hair up in a simple bun for the initial ceremony, before letting it down for the reception.</p> <p>The pair then pulled out their best moves on the dancefloor, while surrounded by their friends and family. </p> <p>A day prior to their wedding, the couple shared a sweet selfie of them snuggled up to each other with the caption: "Just one more sleep till we say I do! King Charles cuts ties with TV host over affair revelations

<p>King Charles has cut all ties with UK television host Phillip Schofield, after he lied about having an affair. </p> <p>Schofield has been dumped from his hosting gig at <em>This Morning</em>, which he has been the face of for 21 years, after he admitted he had an affair with a much younger man who worked at the ITV network.</p> <p>The 61-year-old resigned from the network after lying about the “consensual on-off relationship", admitting in a statement that the affair was "unwise" but stressed it was "not illegal".</p> <p>He added that he was "deeply sorry" for having lied to his wife and to ITV about his relationship with the man reportedly 30 years his junior and who he first met as a teenager.</p> <p>“Contrary to speculation, whilst I met the man when he was a teenager and was asked to help him to get into television, it was only after he started to work on the show that it became more than just a friendship,” he said in his recent statement.</p> <p>In light of the affair, Schofield has been dropped by The Prince's Trust, after being an ambassador for several years. </p> <p>A spokesperson from the King's charity told <em><a title="The Telegraph" href="https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2023/05/30/phillip-schofield-dropped-princes-trust-this-morning-affair/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Telegraph</a> UK</em> that it was mutually agreed it was "no longer appropriate to work together".</p> <p>"In light of Phillip's recent admissions, we have agreed with him that it is no longer appropriate to work together," a Prince's Trust spokesperson said.</p> <p>All references to Schofield have been removed from the charity's website and also his own page.</p> <p>It previously read, "Outside of work, Phillip is an ambassador for the charity The Prince's Trust, dedicating time to further the work of supporting vulnerable young people in the UK".</p> <p>The Prince's Trust was created in 1976 by then-Prince Charles to help young disadvantaged people in the UK, with the hugely successful charity helping more than one million young people by providing them with business grants, education and training.</p> <p>Following the bombshell revelation of Schofield's affair, ITV said it had investigated the allegations of his affair "several times" from early 2020, but said it didn't find any evidence.</p> <p>It's been a trying time for the ex-presenter with his brother Timothy recently being jailed for 12 years over child sex offences.</p> <p><em>Image credits: Getty Images</em></p>

Project host Hamish MacDonald ties the knot

<p><em>The Project</em> host Hamish MacDonald has married his longtime partner, Jacob Fitzroy, with his co-hosts sharing snaps of the wedding online.</p> <p>Pictures of the special day were posted on <em>The Project’s</em> Twitter account as MacDonald deactivated his social media accounts in 2020.</p> <p>The three shots saw the TV host donning a traditional Scottish kilt, while Fitzroy dazzled in a classic black tux and white bow tie.</p> <p>In one image, the pair were shown in an outdoor setting surrounded by friends being showered with confetti.</p> <p>Another snap shows the newlyweds smiling sweetly at each other.</p> <p>In a video posted on Twitter, co-host Georgie Tunny announced the news, saying, “There has been a wedding in <em>The Project</em> family this weekend; our very own Hamish MacDonald and his longtime partner Jacob.</p> <p>“Here are some cheeky little snaps – don’t they both look stupidly handsome and so gorgeous. And we are so thrilled for them. They could not look more in love.”</p> <p>She went on to say that she would “start crying”.</p> <p>“They are so beyond beautiful.”</p> <p>Sarah Harris added, “I love the kilt,” while Michael Hing joked, “Didn’t get an invite for some reason, don’t know why.”</p> <p>The others were quick to note he was working.</p> <p>Tunny said, “I just hope that they had the most magical day.”</p> <p>MacDonald made his first red carpet appearance with Fitzroy in June 2019 when they attended the GQ Gentlemen’s Ball in Melbourne, where the TV host was serving as moderator.</p> <p>“I’m always proud to stand beside my best friend and favourite human,” he captioned an image of him and Fitzroy kissing in a photo booth.</p> <p>“And while I hope that one day soon it won’t be newsworthy to hold the hand of the person you love, for now, we’d both like to say thank you for the overwhelming messages of love and support.”</p> <p>The lead-up to the nuptials wasn't all smooth sailing with the police called to a party at MacDonald’s Sydney home in March 2023 following complaints from neighbours after festivities allegedly continues for six hours.</p> <p>The party was reportedly held to celebrate the upcoming wedding.</p> <p><em>Image credit: Twitter</em></p>

Bono reveals why Michael Hutchence cut ties with him

<p dir="ltr">Bono has shared the details that led to the end of his friendship with late INXS frontman Michael Hutchence. </p> <p dir="ltr">In his new book, titled <em>Surrender: 40 Songs, One Story</em>, the U2 frontman reflects on his tumultuous friendship with Hutchence and partner Paula Yates in the early 90s.</p> <p dir="ltr">Bono recalled the early days of Hutchence’s relationship with Yates, which started in 1994, while Yates was still married to Bono’s close friend, Bob Geldof.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Paula worshipped Michael at a time when he needed all the adoration he could get, things not going well on- and offstage for INXS,” Bono writes.</p> <p dir="ltr">Bono also says he and his wife of 40 years, Ali, had an immediate sense that the relationship was “going to go wrong, and that this intensity could not last a lifetime”.</p> <p dir="ltr">And soon enough, Bono writes, the couple were in “free fall – spiralling down the vortex of a recreational drug use that had become hard work for everyone, especially their family, especially the younger ones”.</p> <p dir="ltr">“As their behaviour changed, our friendship became strained, and we grew uncomfortable during their visits.”</p> <p dir="ltr">Paula and Michael had one child together in 1996: a daughter named Heavenly Hiraani Tiger Lily. </p> <p dir="ltr">Bono and his wife were asked to be her godparents, to which they refused, as they were too “wigged out” by the couple’s rampant drug use. </p> <p dir="ltr">They hoped their rejection of such a meaningful offer would make the new parents think twice about the path they were on. </p> <p dir="ltr">True friendship, Bono writes, “meant being truthful. Friendship is not a sentimental business.”</p> <p dir="ltr">But instead, their refusal only further pushed the two couples from each other further, as Bono says, “It only made them think again about us.”</p> <p dir="ltr">“That we can half live with our conscience is no substitute for the fact that we can’t live at all with our friends. <p>Aussie cricket legend Nathan Lyon has tied the knot with Emma McCarthy in an intimate weekend wedding ceremony. </p> <p>They both shared snaps of their big day on Instagram, with the newlyweds smiling for their first official photos as husband and wife. </p> <p>McCarthy — who has changed her name to Emma Lyon on the social media platform — shared the picture with a simple love heart as the caption, while Lyon wrote, “Mr and Mrs.”</p> <p>The congratulations were quick to flood in for the couple, with NSW star Baxter Holt commenting on Lyon’s post, “Happiness is an understatement!! New details on bodies found tied together in dam

<p dir="ltr">One of the bodies found dumped in a Queensland dam on Saturday has been identified.</p> <p dir="ltr">Darryl Smith, 51, was found floating in the Gordonbrook Dam in South Burnett, tied up to a woman, who is yet to be identified.</p> <p dir="ltr">Police are urging anyone with information of Mr Smith’s activities before Saturday 19 to come forward.</p> <p dir="ltr">Mr Smith’s Holden commodore Station Wagon was found parked near the dam. Police believe it had been parked there since March 13.</p> <p dir="ltr">A group of men camping over the weekend were informed of the two dead bodies by a kayaker about 3.30 pm on Saturday.</p> <p dir="ltr">Queensland police continue to investigate the post-mortem and have asked anyone with any information to come forward.</p> <p dir="ltr">They have dismissed any involvement of a third party in Mr Smith’s and the woman’s death.</p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Image: Queensland Police</em></p>

<p>Priscilla Presley's son, Navarone Garibaldi has married his girlfriend of four years.</p><p>The 34-year-old musician whose father is Brazilian screenwriter-turned-computer-programmer Marco Antonio Garcia (a.k.a. Marco Garibaldi) has married Elisa Achilli at Schloss Hunigen Hotel in Emmental Valley, Switzerland on Tuesday.</p><p>The couple who got engaged in December 2020, were surrounded by loved ones, including Navarone's mother Priscilla, as they exchanged vows in the stunning grounds of the 16th century castle.</p><p>Navarone gushed: 'I never thought I would find a counterpart that is so understanding and supportive.
