Violent concert trend sees Harry Styles added to injured list

Harry Styles has become the latest victim of “object throwing culture” at his concert, after the British pop star was hit in the eye by a flying item.

The 29-year-old was in Vienna, Austria, as his years-long Love on Tour begins to wrap up, singing to a sold out crowd of 50,000 strong.

During his performance, Styles was prancing around the stage when a flying object hit him directly in the eye.

The former One Direction member was seen wincing in pain as he bent over and covered his eyes with his hands.

This is why we can’t have nice things. Harry Styles is the latest celebrity to be hit with something from the audience while performing at his concert in Vienna. #HarryStyles pic.twitter.com/tithlDqfb2

— Glitter Magazine (@glittermagazine) July 9, 2023

Videos captured by fans showed Styles rocking a green and purple sequin pants and vest combo and walking across the stage between songs when the unknown item was launched at him.

As the trend of throwing items on stage during live performances continues to grow, Styles’ incident leaves many wondering when this ritual got out of hand.

“Why do people keep doing this, paying money for the front row just to do this too. I’m tired of y’all,” one person asked on Twitter in response to a video of the incident.

“This object throwing culture is about to kill how we experience concerts & festivals moving forward. They’re about to get more expensive and more exclusive,” another person wrote.

A third chimed in, “I genuinely don’t understand like I get throwing stuff on the stage where they’ll see it but they always aim for the face like why???”

Harry is just one of the latest performers to be struck while on stage, with UK singer Bebe Rexha also coping an object to the face just weeks ago.

During her concert in New York, the 33-year-old singer was hit in the face by a mobile phone, resulting in her sustaining a massive black and blue bruise around her eye.

While not all objects tend to hit performers in the face, some flying items are just downright strange, as US singer Pink discovered in recent weeks when a concert-goer threw their mother’s ashes on the stage.

Shocked by the remains being thrown on stage during her show in London’s Hyde Park, the singer simply said, “I don’t know how I feel about this.”

"She's alive!": Claims over TV star's death thrown into question

In a new turn of events, Bride and Prejudice Australian actress Dannii Erskine, who was reported dead, may still be alive.

A person claiming to be Erskine’s sister Dee announced her death following a tragic car crash in North Melbourne that was reported to have occurred on April 28.

Erskine was allegedly T-boned by another driver on her way home from a shopping trip.

Speaking to the So Dramatic podcast, Dee revealed at the time that Dannii’s skull had been crushed upon impact with her vehicle airbag, ultimately resulting in her death.

However, recent claims suggest the star could still be alive, and a statement by Victoria Police raises further questions about the alleged car accident.

An anonymous source told 7NEWS.com.au that Dannii is still alive.

Victoria Police said they could not comment on individuals due to privacy laws, but confirmed there were no fatal or life-threatening collisions recorded in the North Melbourne area within the past month.

In addition to the bombshell twist, the Coroner’s Court of Victoria revealed they had no record of Dannii Erskine’s death.

Dannii’s ex-partner Denton Ansley appeared in an interview with So Dramatic and recalled a similar incident from 2022, where people received a mass message from Erskine’s account claiming she had passed away.

However, she later revealed her account was hacked and that she was alive.

Ansley also alleged that friends had received a message with details of a funeral service to be held on May 16 in the Mornington Peninsula, VIC.

They contacted the funeral company and were told there was no funeral scheduled for that date under Dannii’s name.

Erskine’s Instagram, which was taken down shortly after her alleged death, has since been reactivated.

All posts related to her death have been removed, however, the “rest in peace” memorial piece remains as the account’s profile picture.

Dannii participated in Seven’s Bride and Prejudice in 2019 with her then-finance, Denton.

Couple’s hiking trip thrown into jeopardy days before take off

When US-based couple Neil Lapetina and Denise Cordero spent $20,000 to explore the world - and one of its most unique locations - they had dreams of a once-in-a-lifetime hike through Lord Howe Island’s stunning scenery.

But days before their departure, their excitement turned to horror when the pair learned that a large number of eco-destinations had been suddenly closed off - up to 75 per cent of them.

The reason? The Lord Howe Island Board [LHIB] were working to contain an airborne fungus with potentially devastating consequences for the World Heritage-listed destination, and the 241 species of Indigenous plants to which it is home - 47 per cent of which can only be found there.

Additionally, those can primarily be found along the island’s numerous hiking trails in the Permanent Park Preserve [PPP], prompting the mass closures for three-quarters of its total area.

However, this meant that Neil and Denise - as well as any other traveller with tickets to visit - were in some trouble, as compensation wasn’t being offered to them.

“We were told that they knew about this on February 3,” Neil said, “by their own admission, and if they knew about it [then]), then there’s a chance we might have not have paid our non-refundable balance due.

“First and foremost, myrtle rust has hit the island hard — our first concern is with the island. We’re confused: if it’s as bad as they say it is, then don’t have people come out.”

Myrtle rust has the potential to destroy entire Australian ecosystems, and spreads at rapid pace as its spores can be carried by wind, animals, insects, and humans alike, so it’s no small wonder the LHIB took immediate action to combat the threat.

Fellow traveller Ian Freestone - who has visited the island numerous times before - had plans to celebrate his birthday there with 30 guests. After forking out a staggering $60,000 for the trip, they were informed that the trails would not be available to them, with closures to the PPP.

Ian told 7News the whole thing was like “going to Luna Park but not [being] allowed on all the rides.”

And for those who had been left on the island after the LHIB’s “effective immediately, the PPP is temporarily closed” announcement, the situation was not much better, with some claiming they - and their holiday funds - had been “left in limbo”.

And while the island’s initial closure had been sudden - and crucial - it was only 10 days before the LHIB announced that the PPP would be partially reopening.

“After extensive monitoring, no new sites of myrtle rust infestation have been located on the island. Importantly, as of yesterday (March 23), there were no active spores at known sites,” they said.

But for some, this wasn’t enough, with many noting that they just would have appreciated “a bit of notice”, especially after spending so much to visit in the first place.

Neil - and assumedly Denise - were of a similar opinion. Although they value the island’s flora, they pleaded for some compassion from the LHIB in the wake of their snap decision, and its consequences for themselves and the other impacted travellers.

“We’re putting $20,000, between the two couples, into this. I’ve worked hard all my life for this, for money - this doesn’t grow on trees,” he said.

“We’re nature lovers ... we get it. But communication has been lacking. To hear about this first through word-of-mouth, that’s not the way to do it.

“Please, show your visitors some respect.”

Images: Facebook

How Prince Andrew and Prince Harry have thrown coronation plans into "chaos"

With King Charles' coronation looming closer, royal experts have claimed that the celebratory weekend will be overshadowed by controversial royals Prince Harry and Prince Andrew.

Buckingham Palace recently released more information on the slew of events that will take place over the coronation weekend in May, with a range of ceremonial, celebratory and community happenings to commemorate the new reigning sovereign.

However, the plans for the grand weekend seem to already have been thrown into "chaos" by the revelation the Duke of York has amassed a £10 million ($A17.6 million) war chest to launch a case against sex abuse victim Virginia Giuffre.

Plus, Prince Harry’s memoir, which quickly became the fastest-selling nonfiction book of all time, is still making headlines all over the world.

Royal expert Angela Levin thinks the coronation plans will “absolutely” be thrown into chaos as a result, questioning whether the royal outcasts will even attend.

She told The Sun Online, “I don’t even know if he and Harry are going together.”

The Sun revealed on Saturday that Prince Andrew is making a bid to overturn the multimillion-dollar settlement with his sex accuser after her abuse case against a high-profile US lawyer crumbled.

Angela said, “Andrew is out of control – who’s guiding him on this?”

She said it seemed to be more than a coincidence that the Duke’s plans came to light less than two weeks after the release of Spare, saying “It seems very odd."

“I’ve got no evidence. But the people who feel full of resentment could be going up against King Charles."

“The nastiness is just beyond imagination really.”

After Prince Harry's string of revelations in Spare, it has been speculated that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will not attend the coronation, with no confirmation yet on whether they plan to face the royal family for the joyous occasion.

Brittany Higgins’ comments reported to police after trial thrown out

The comments Brittany Higgins made outside of court after the case was thrown out have been referred to the police by Bruce Lehmann’s lawyers.

Mr Lehmann has pleaded not guilty of raping former Liberal staffer Brittany Higgins in Parliament House after a night out drinking in March 2019.

On October 27, the case was thrown out of court after it was found that a juror accessed evidence that was not presented in court.

An emotional Ms Higgins spoke to the media for three minutes after Chief Justice Lucy McCallum’s decision

“I told the truth, no matter how uncomfortable or unflattering to the court,” she said.

"I was required to tell the truth under oath for over a week in the witness stand, I was cross-examined at length.”

This was enough for Mr Lehmann’s lawyers to report Ms Higgins’ comments to the police stating "the complainant proceeded to give what appears to have been a pre-prepared speech to the media outside the court".

"We have brought these comments to the attention of the Court and the Australian Federal Police, and it is not appropriate for Mr Lehrmann or his lawyers to make any comments as to whether the complainant's statements might amount to a contempt or offences against the ACT Criminal Code," a statement from lawyer Steven Whybrow read.

Chief Justice Lucy McCallum notified the court as soon as she found out that a juror had accessed evidence that was not presented in court.

All 12 jurors were called into the ACT Supreme Court and questioned after an academic paper that reported on how often false rape accusations were made was found.

"During routine tidying of the jury room by three sheriff's officers after the conclusion of proceedings yesterday, one of the officers accidentally bumped one of the juror's document holders onto the floor," she said.

She said she had no other choice but to dismiss the jurors despite warning them “at least 17 times” to only discuss the points said in court.

"You must not try to undertake your own research," she said she told them.

"You must rely exclusively on the evidence you hear in this courtroom.

"If you are learning something about this trial, and I'm not there, then you should not be doing it."

Despite dismissing the jurors, Justice McCallum thanked them and told them that their time was not wasted.

"This may come as a frustration to you after the hard work you all put in, and I want to convey my extreme gratitude," she said.

The juror who accessed the academic papers will not face repercussions for their misconduct.

A retrial will be held on February 20, 2023 with Mr Lehmann released on bail.

Images: Nine News

Women thrown off flight for what she tried to smuggle on board

Although it’s an option to transport your pets with you when you fly, most pet owners will leave their furry friends behind when they go on a trip.

But one woman thought she’d try a sneaky way to smuggle her cat on board a British Airways flight from Glasgow to London Heathrow Airport. In the American’s hand luggage, her cat was stored inside a box with the passenger claiming it was necessary for “emotional support,” reported Yahoo 7.

The unidentified woman had somehow made it through airport security with the feline in her carry-on luggage. According to the Daily Mail an airport insider claimed that the security scanner “would not have picked up the cat as being alive, dead or stuffed".

Needless to say, she was removed from the October 21 flight, but not before the woman became panicked when she was asked to store the bag in an overhead locker as she was seated at an emergency exit.

It comes after some even more bizarre incidents of passengers attempting to smuggle “emotional support” animals on board flights. One woman was removed from a Frontier Airlines flight in the US earlier this month when she tried to bring a squirrel with her on her voyage, according to The Independent.

And earlier this year a United Airlines passenger wanted to stowaway her “emotional support peacock” named Dexter on a flight to Los Angeles, even attempting to buy the bird a ticket.

Speaking of the latest incident, a British Airways spokesman told The Independent that while cats weren’t allowed in plane cabins, assistance dogs were “very welcome".

“Cats cannot travel in the cabin but recognised assistance dogs are always very welcome and travel completely free of charge alongside their owners on board,” they said.

“Other animals will need to travel in the hold but will be just as comfortable in a carefully controlled environment," the spokesman added.

What's the strangest thing you have seen a passenger bring on board a flight? Tell us in the comments below.

Man thrown off luxury cruise after staging “mutiny”

If you’ve ever been on a cruise before, you’ll know that last-minute changes to the itinerary or activities program aren’t all that rare. It can be inconvenient, sure, but they usually don't impact the holiday too significantly.

For one French man, however, a route change sent him overboard – literally.

The Costa neoRiviera cruise was scheduled to sail around the islands of Madagascar, Maurice, Reunion and the Seychelles, when it was forced to cancel three planned stops due to the outbreak of the plague.

Initially, Alain Jan, a French chef travelling with his wife, was fine with the change. But the next day, when it was announced that two more stops (including Mauritius) had been axed from the itinerary and that passengers would be compensated just €150 ($228) in onboard credit, Alain decided he’d had enough.

“Things started heating up – €150 when a major part of the trip is cancelled and a drink on board costs €5,” he told Le Parisien.

“That evening, we organised a protest in the restaurant. There were 60 of us banging our fists on the table to alert other cruise passengers to this con job.”

As the ship approached the Seychelles, the group staged a second protest, and the local police were called to escort Alain and his wife off the cruise.

“I spent two nights in a hotel in the Seychelles with my wife, then were flown home paid for by Costa. That’s how I was freed from the floating prison.”

According to Alain, the cruise company had known about the plague outbreak in Madagascar months prior to the trip but failed to do anything about it until passengers were already on board.

Costa Cruises, however, denied the allegations in a statement. “The company made every effort to maintain the stop-offs on Madagascar, looking into all the alternatives.

“Given the delays that would have created, and even longer ones if there were any suspect cases on board, and considering that passengers were already on board, the company was forced to restrict its trip to the Seychelles and Reunion.”

Tell us in the comments below, have you ever taken a cruise only to find the itinerary drastically different to what you expected?

What this man did mid-flight got him thrown in jail

A British man has been jailed for nearly 10 years after he started a fire on board an airplane when sneaking a cigarette in the toilet.

John Cox was travelling from Birmingham to Sharm el-Sheikh in Egypt when he threw the butt into the bin, igniting a fire that "could have killed 200 on board".

The 46-year-old former soldier was initially jailed for more than four years but, on May 25, the Court of Appeal ruled the sentence was "unduly lenient" and increased it to nine years and six months.

"The potential for causing disaster here was plain and obvious," Lady Justice Sharp told the court, the International Business Times reported.

"The sentence passed was unduly lenient, this offence called for a deterrent sentence and condign punishment."

A smoke detector first went off an hour into the Monarch Airlines flight, prompting a stern warning from the captain about smoking.

The second incident in a different toilet started a fire and the captain issued a mayday call before making an emergency landing.

Cox was detained by Egyptian authorities and pleaded guilty to reckless arson at Birmingham Crown Court in March.

What’s your take? Homeless man’s Christmas tree thrown away by council – his community responds in the most heartfelt way

How would you feel if someone came into your home, grabbed your Christmas tree, and threw it away? Then, when you retrieved it, the culprit returned and threw it away again?

That’s what happened to New Orleans resident John, or “Philly” as the locals know him, a homeless man who resides underneath the Pontchartrain expressway in New Orleans. Philly recently set up a Christmas tree next to his tent, decorating it with battery powered lights and a bow topper, according to local news station WGNO.

Unfortunately for Philly, the city’s sanitation department was ordered to remove the tree, saying it was a code violation. Not his tent or any other of his belongings, specifically the tree. After one of his friends managed to retrieve it from the dumpster in which it was thrown, the sanitation crew came back to collect it a second time. This is when the kindest of the community shone through.

After news broke of the Grinch’s who stole Philly’s Christmas, strangers begun to bring him more Christmas trees, decorations and gifts.

"I don't care what code violation it is," Kelly Caruso, one of the people who donated a tree to Philly, told US news station ABC 13. "It's the holidays. And these people need everything that can uplift them as much as they can."

Watch Philly, in true Christmas spirit, forwarding on the large amount of gifts he has received to others in need.

He did save one of the trees for himself however, decorating it and placing it next to his tent again.

When asked what Christmas means to him, Philly defined it in just two words: "helping others."

Related links:

Grandmother retires after 52 years walking kids to school

9-year-old raises $100,000 for sick kids

Wonderful moment newborn twins meet for the first time

Majority of bowel cancer screening kits thrown away

New research shows that although more people are screening for bowel cancer, the majority of people still throw the free test kit away when they receive it in the post.

During the 12 months to June 2014, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare received back just 36 per cent of the 1.4 million bowel cancer screening tests sent out. The year before the rate was 33.4 per cent.

Participation rates for other cancers such as breast and cervical were much higher.

Of the 500,000 people that participated in the screening program, 38,000 had abnormalities that required further tests.

The study found even though women were more likely to take part in the screening test, it was men who had higher rates of bowel cancer.

Chief executive of Bowel Cancer Australia Julian Wiggins said that every Australian aged 50 and over without symptoms or a family history of bowel cancer should screen themselves for bowel cancer every one to two years using a faecal immunochemical test (FIT). This is the same type of screening kit that the Government sends out.

If caught early, most cases of bowel cancer can be treated successfully.

"Screening using a faecal immunochemical test is one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of bowel cancer as it can help detect pre-cancerous polyps for removal during colonoscopy or cancer in its earliest stages when it is easier to treat and cure," Mr Wiggins said.

Over the past nine years the national bowel cancer screening program has detected over 4,000 cancers and more than 12,000 potential tumours.

To reduce your risk of bowel cancer, consume a high fibre diet, exercise regularly, reduce your meat and alcohol intake, give up smoking and manage your weight to stay in a healthy range.

You can also purchase bowel cancer screening kits from pharmacies thanks to Rotary Australia.

Related links:

Meet the world’s tallest cow

Specialist police unit introduced to combat elder abuse in NSW

71-year-old woman completes 161 kilometre marathon with 6 seconds to spare
