The singer, faced with a burning car and desperate circumstances, didn't hesitate to take action. He bravely dragged the dying Jaselle Melrose from the wreckage and performed CPR in an attempt to save her life.

In a statement to The Daily Telegraph, Noll expressed the gravity of the situation, saying, “Last night was such a tragedy. Two men arrested after fleeing horror crash that killed teens

In a heart-wrenching incident that has sent shockwaves through the community, two teenagers lost their lives in a horrific car crash in Sydney's southwest.

The tragic incident unfolded on Maxwells Ave, Ashcroft, claiming the lives of a 13-year-old boy and a 14-year-old boy. The two victims were reportedly best friends, with one of them having recently celebrated his 13th birthday just the day before the fateful crash.

The terrible accident occurred when the car they were in collided with a tree and a power pole outside a residential property. The two boys were seated in the back of the vehicle, and the impact of the crash was devastating. One of the boys was ejected from the car on impact, while the other remained trapped by his seatbelt.

Authorities suspect that speed was a contributing factor to the accident, highlighting the importance of safe driving practices, especially when minors are involved.

As news of the incident spread, tributes began pouring in for the two young victims online. Friends, family members, and community members expressed their grief and sorrow, describing the accident as "heartbreaking". The loss of two bright young lives has left a lasting impact on the tight-knit community.

CCTV footage captured the entire incident, shedding light on the events that unfolded after the crash. The footage revealed the shocking actions of the two men who had been in the vehicle, namely the driver, Nicholas Thew, and his surviving passenger, Anthony Morris. It is believed that these men were either family members or friends of the two boys.

In the footage, a dirt bike rider who had been following the car approached the crash scene and discovered one of the boys' lifeless bodies. The rider then checked on the two men in the front of the vehicle before one of the men emerged from the wreck. Afterward, the dirt bike rider departed the scene. The man who emerged from the wreck assisted in unbuckling one of the boys from his seatbelt and helped the other male out of the vehicle. Shockingly, the pair then fled the scene.

Following an extensive investigation and manhunt, the police arrested two men, aged 23 and 27, on Tuesday around 12:30pm. Both individuals were taken to Liverpool Hospital under police guard for assessment and treatment of injuries they allegedly sustained during the crash.

While the legal process is in motion, the community is left to grapple with the immense loss of two young lives, taken too soon. The 27-year-old man has been charged with nine offences – two counts of aggravated dangerous driving occasioning death with a speed of 45 km over; two counts of dangerous driving occasioning death – drive manner dangerous; two counts of failing to stop and assist after vehicle impact causing death; never licensed person drive vehicle on road; cause bodily harm by misconduct; and negligent driving (occasioning death).

No charges have yet been laid for the 23-year-old man.

The grief-stricken families and friends of the victims, as well as the community at large, are rallying together to provide support and comfort during this devastating time.

The investigation into the crash continues, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward and contact Crime Stoppers. As the community mourns the loss of these two young lives, they are also seeking closure and justice for the tragic events that unfolded on that fateful morning in Ashcroft.

Images: Nine News

"You can't forgive that": Teen arrested after felling of iconic 200-year-old tree

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested in northern England after what police describe as the "deliberate" felling of the iconic Sycamore Gap tree.

The tree had stood next to the UNESCO World Heritage Site, Hadrian's Wall for nearly 200 years before it was tragically vandalised.

Both locals and tourists have frequently stopped to capture a photo and appreciate the stunning tree ever since it gained fame for its appearance in Kevin Costner's 1991 film, Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves.

Now, photographs from the scene on early Thursday showed that the tree had been cut off near the base of its trunk, and the locals are fuming.

"The tree is a world-renowned landmark and the vandalism has caused understandable shock and anger throughout the local community and beyond," Northumbria Police said in a statement.

"This is an incredibly sad day," they added.

"The tree was iconic to the North East and enjoyed by so many who live in or who have visited this region."

Alison Hawkins, was the first person to spot the damage while she was walking on the Hadrian's Wall path.

"It was a proper shock. It's basically the iconic picture that everyone wants to see," she said.

"You can forgive nature doing it but you can't forgive that."

The Northumberland National Park authority have asked the public not to visit the iconic tree, which was voted as English Tree of the Year in 2016.

Police report that the teen has since been arrested on suspicion of causing criminal damage, and has been assisting officers with their inquiries.

Images: Getty

Buxton crash driver pleads guilty over five teen deaths

Tyrell Edwards, 19, has pleaded guilty to five counts of aggravated driving occasioning death, following a fatal crash which killed five teens south of Sydney last year.

The teen arrived at Picton Local Court on Thursday surrounded by family members who shielded his face from cameras using an umbrella.

As he sat in the dock at the packed court, the magistrate read out the five charges he faced over the horror crash, where he was driving 45km/h over the speed limit.

"Guilty, your honour," Edwards would repeat as each count was read out to him.

Edwards, who was a P-plater at the time of the accident, crashed into a tree killing three boys and two girls between the ages of 14 and 16, while he suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Summer Williams, Antonio Desisto, Gabriella McLennan, Lily Van de Putte, and Tyrese Bechard were all pronounced dead at the scene.

The court was told that the car only had seatbelts for four passengers in addition to the driver.

His lawyers argued that he should remain on bail until his next court date on the 24th of August, so that he can receive treatment for mental health issues including PTSD and an autism spectrum disorder diagnosis.

But the Magistrate denied the plea, as they believed it wasn't a good enough excuse for Edwards to remain at liberty until then.

"I'm also of the view that if it is necessary to take place then it can take place while the offender is in custody," Magistrate David Degnan said.

"Accordingly his bail is revoked, and you will remain in custody, Edwards."

The Magistrate also acknowledged family and friends of the five victims, who were present in court to hear the charges, before describing the tragedy as a "particularly egregious" example of dangerous driving.

"And the impact was at speed and had a devastating effect," he said.

Edwards faces a maximum of 14 years in prison for each of the charges.

Image: Facebook/ Nine News

"Miracles do exist": Astonishing return of missing teen after four years

An American teenager has been found after she went missing four years ago, when she walked into a police station and asked to be taken off the missing children list.

Alicia Navarro, who is now 18, walked into a police station in a small town in Montana, close to the Canadian border, and identified herself as the teenager who was reported missing in September 2019.

“Alicia Navarro has been located,” Glendale public safety communications manager Jose Santiago said during a press conference.

“She is by all accounts, safe, she is by all accounts healthy and she is by all accounts happy.”

The teenager reportedly left her home willingly four years ago when she was 14-years-old, leaving her parents a note when she disappeared from her house overnight on September 15th 2019.

Alicia, who has been described as a high-functioning autistic person, left a handwritten note for her parents that read, “I ran away. I will be back. I swear. I’m sorry,” before she slipped out of the house while they slept.

Her parents then didn't hear from her for four years, until they were contacted by the Glendale Police Department to let them know their child had been found.

Alicia had an emotional reunion with her mum, who never stopped looking for her, as she was very apologetic over the pain her mother went through not knowing where she was for the past four years or even if she was still alive.

Her mom, Jessica Nuñez, called the discovery of her daughter four years after her disappearance a miracle in a video she posted to Facebook.

“For everyone who has missing loved ones, I want you to use this case as an example,” she said. “Miracles do exist. Never lose hope and always fight.”

Nuñez said she doesn’t have details on her daughter’s disappearance but said “the important thing is that she is alive.”

Glendale police are now investigating how the teenager got to Montana, and how she has survived over the last four years by herself.

Alicia told police that no one has harmed her and appeared to be healthy, while the girl currently remains in Montana and is able to come and go as she pleases and has asked for privacy so she can move on with her life.

“We can only imagine what she’s going through, mentally, emotionally, as well as her family, and as much as we’d like to say this is the end, this is probably only the beginning of where this investigation will go,” Glendale PD Lt. Scott Waite said.

Man charged with murder over disappearance of missing Tasmanian teen

A tragic turn of events has led to a murder charge after the discovery of remains believed to belong to Shyanne-Lee Tatnell, a 14-year-old who had been missing in Tasmanian bushland for three months.

The arrest of a 36-year-old man from Scottsdale, a rural town in the state's north-east, came after an extensive search in nearby Nabowla. The suspect is now in custody and expected to appear in Launceston Magistrates Court for further proceedings.

Tasmania Police confirmed that the remains found on a bush track in Nabowla were human and likely to be Shyanne-Lee's, who was last seen in Launceston on the night of April 30.

Northern district commander Kate Chambers expressed her heartfelt sympathy for the community and reaffirmed their commitment to seeking answers and closure for Shyanne-Lee's family and loved ones.

While forensic testing on the remains is underway, it may take up to a week for conclusive results.

Shyanne-Lee's mother, Bobbi-Lee Ketchell, posted an emotional message to her daughter following the revelation of the remains. The message accompanied a photo of the young girl with a beaming smile, and it read, "I'm home," which was a heartbreaking change from the previous plea, "Help bring me home."

In the past two months, police have seized several items during their search efforts. A property in Scottsdale was declared a crime scene and thoroughly investigated. The search in Nabowla involved a massive team of 180 people, including helicopter crews and search-and-rescue volunteers on horseback.

Shyanne-Lee was last seen on CCTV near the North Esk River in Launceston, approximately 50km southwest of Nabowla. Despite extensive searches in the river area, no trace of the teenager was found. She had been staying in youth accommodation for two weeks before her disappearance and was en route to visit a friend in nearby Ravenswood when she vanished.

In June, more than 100 people, including Shyanne-Lee's family members, gathered for a touching vigil to remember her. The community has been deeply affected by this heartbreaking event, and authorities are dedicated to finding the truth and providing closure to the grieving family.

Images: Facebook / PR Handout

"Broken" family's appeal after daughter missing for 7 weeks

A mother has shared how her family is "broken” as she remains in the dark about what happened to her missing 14-year-old daughter who disappeared seven weeks ago.

The family of Tasmanian girl Shyanne-Lee Tatnell has made another plea for answers after the teen vanished while walking to see a friend on April 30.

“She’s my baby and I desperately want her back,” her mother Bobbi-Lee Ketchell told A Current Affair.

The teen had moved in with her grandmother due to tension with her mother in the family home in the town of Burnie, later moving onto a youth centre in Launceston.

She started walking from the centre along the North Esk River on the night of April 30 but never reached her destination.

Her mother shared the agonising conversation she had with her daughter before she vanished, with Ms Ketchell urging her daughter not to break her curfew after being grounded.

“She got upset … we had a little bit of a disagreement and then I said, ‘I love you’,” Ms Ketchell revealed.

She confessed her daughter never said, “I love you back”.

Her grandmother has described the young girl’s disappearance as torture.

“You don’t just disappear off the face of the earth without something being found, some piece of clothing or footwear or phone,” her grandmother said.

The family believe that their daughter accepted a lift from someone or was potentially “forced into a vehicle”.

“She was rebellious and it didn’t matter what I would tell her not to do. She was firm on doing what she wanted and didn’t think of the consequences before doing it,” Ms Ketchell said.

Police are seeking the drivers of two silver cars captured on CCTV near the area where she was last seen.

“We actually want to discount you from any investigation, from any potential witness, so we can move on with other aspects of the investigation,” police said.

Authorities have also highlighted that at one point the footage showed Shyanne-Lee running but said there was “no evidence” she was being chased.

Her family have urged anyone with information to come forward.

“Nanny loves you so much Shyanne. I need you home, your family needs you home desperately,” her grandmother said.

“If someone has my granddaughter, you need to release her now.

“We are a totally broken family, we’re lost without her.”

Image credit: A Current Affair / Facebook

Father of fallen teen footy player speaks out

Castlemaine Football Netball Club, and the wider AFL Central Victoria community, are in mourning after losing one of their own over the weekend.

Dallas Keogh-Frankling, an up-and-coming CFNC Under 18s player, was participating in an away game at the Kyneton Showgrounds when he was tackled.

While the 17-year-old got up from the collision, even going on to play the rest of the game, he collapsed after the game, and passed away awaiting hospital transfer.

His father, who had been with Dallas at the time of the tragedy, told the Herald Sun that, “late in the last quarter he was tackled on the boundary line by two people.

“His arms were pinned and he landed on the ball next to the gates where people come onto the field.”

Mark Frankling also reported that Dallas had gotten up “straight away”, but that on his way to the bench he could be seen grasping “his guts”, and that when Mark had gone to check on his son, he’d noted that he “might have broken ribs”.

It was after the team’s coach had addressed the boys in the changing rooms that Dallas’ condition took a turn for the worst, with Mark recalling how he’d “looked over and saw his face was in a bit of pain, and I asked him if he was all right.

“His eyes rolled in the back of his head, I yelled for the ambulance, and then he came to.”

Mark had been certain things would be alright if Dallas - whose face looked “grey” - could just get to the hospital, and followed the ambulance his son was taken in.

However, when he arrived at Kyneton Hospital, he could see paramedics attempting to revive his teenage son - and while he “came back … he flatlined again”.

Dallas was meant to be transferred to Melbourne for further treatment, but tragically passed away before that could occur.

“They worked again on bringing him back,” Mark said. “I held his hand and it felt cold. After an hour-and-a-half, they couldn’t bring him back.

Mark and the rest of Dallas’ family are now asking the coroner to investigate, hoping for some answers into why Dallas - who was healthy and had no known pre-existing medical conditions - had died under these circumstances, because they “don’t want this to happen to anyone else.

“I don’t want this to happen to any other kid, I don’t think Dallas would want this either.”

As Mark went on to explain, he wanted “only good things” to come out of it, certain that his son would have wanted his friends to continue playing, rather than hanging up their boots in the wake of Dallas’ passing.

“That’s life,” Mark said, “things can happen, accidents can happen. I just don’t want this to affect the footy club.”

“But I want only good things to come from this. Dallas would still want them to play footy instead of not playing footy.

“That’s life, things can happen, accidents can happen, I just don’t want this to affect the footy club.”

According to Mark, Dallas had been “growing up so well”, devoting his life to the sport that he loved, and confessed that “it’s still hard to comprehend I won’t be driving him to footy, and him telling me what he’s going to do today.”

“He was just a great kid. There was never a bad word about him. He had great people around him, quiet and polite.”

The same message carried on across Castlemaine Football Netball Club’s heartfelt tribute to their young star - in which they also confirmed the heartbreaking news - with many of Dallas’ friends and teammates taking to the comments to share their messages of love and loss.

“Dallas loved his football, he loved his Club, and he loved his team mates,” they wrote. “It is unfathomable to us that he is gone. At the behest of his family, training will continue to be offered this week to honour the fact that he would never want his death to dampen our love of the game …

“To our wider football and netball community who have provided condolences, sent personal messages and posted tributes - we feel your support.

“Our focus is now on Dallas’s family, his teammates, friends, and our wider Club community as we process his loss and come to terms with our collective grief.”

Images: Facebook, 9News / Nine

Two teens turn themselves in over Sydney blaze

NSW Police have confirmed that two teenagers have come forward over the Sydney CBD blaze that gutted two buildings, one of them heritage-listed.

The fire broke out at 4pm, and as a locksmith informed Sky News Australia, a trio of teens could be seen running towards Central Station from the building soon afterwards. That same man also said that he had spoken to police about what he’d witnessed.

And as acting assistant commissioner Paul Dunstan later confirmed, “two young people handed themselves in at two separate police stations in the late hours of last night.

"We are speaking with these young people throughout the evening and they are now assisting police with our inquiries.

"I can further confirm we are aware of a further three or four other young people who were present during the fire."

He then asked for the teens - with their parents in tow - to come forward.

The state’s arson squad quickly launched an investigation, and could be seen at the

Randle St scene the following morning, a move that is considered standard practice for an incident of such a scale. A drone, reportedly equipped with infrared technology, was also seen.

What remains of the buildings is at risk of collapse, with closures in place to keep bystanders from harm, with experts fearing bricks could rain onto the neighbouring streets.

As such, investigators have thus far been unable to access the scene to get to the bottom of what caused the blaze.

“Our fire investigators, along with police forensics, will start to make those assessments but that will be some time," Acting FRNSW Commissioner Jeremy Fewtrell said. "We have some engineers attending the scene and they will help guide our decisions around safety."

And while there have been no reports of death, the man who claimed to have seen the group of teens also mentioned to 9News that the kids had believed someone was in there.

“[They were] scared and frightened,” he said, before suggesting that it was especially because they knew “that one of the mates [was] still in the building.

"They are screaming upwards to the kid 'why are you still up there?'"

Images: 9News / Nine

5 books for kids and teens that positively portray trans and gender-diverse lives

International Transgender Day of Visibility is an opportunity to celebrate trans and gender-diverse people – and to raise awareness of the ongoing discrimination they experience.

Trans and gender-diverse people experience higher levels of depression, anxiety, self-harm and suicidal behaviours than the general population.

Recent events in Australia, the United Kingdom and the US remind us of the need to promote acceptance of trans and gender-diverse young people, and to support their mental health and wellbeing.

Community, school and family are vital tools for this.

So are books that positively represent trans and gender-diverse experiences, themes and issues. Such books can expand young people’s awareness, understanding and acceptance of gender differences from an early age. They also validate the lived experience of trans and gender-diverse youth.

The five books below all positively portray trans and gender-diverse lives in age-appropriate ways.

1. My Shadow is Purple by Scott Stuart (ages 4-9)

This picture book, My Shadow Is Purple, considers gender diversity through the use of colour. The story focuses on a boy whose shadow is purple: presumably a blend of masculine blue and feminine pink.

Early in the story, the boy celebrates his gender hybridity, enjoying a range of both traditionally masculine and feminine activities. Stuart also explores the way society regulates and limits gender expression, and how this can have negative effects on individuals.

That said, the picture book is positive and offers a promising message to readers. Through both resistance and collective support, we can acknowledge and celebrate the spectrum of colours our shadows might take.

2. Too Bright to See by Kyle Lukoff (ages 10-12)

In his award-winning junior novel, Too Bright to See, Kyle Lukoff uses the ghost story to explore gender dysphoria and grief.

Trans boy Bug, aged 11, lives in a house with relatively benign spirits. However, during the summer before school starts, Bug’s uncle dies and a new ghost takes up residence in the house.

It is not only the grief of his uncle’s death that Bug must learn to live with. His best friend, Moira, is eager to give him a feminine makeover and the new ghostly resident seems intent on sending him a message.

Bug’s investigation of the ghost and his journey of self-discovery and self-acceptance is sensitive and nuanced, allowing readers to learn about transgender issues (and grief) alongside Bug.

3. Euphoria Kids by Alison Evans (ages 12+)

Euphoria Kids is an urban fantasy young adult novel that centres on three trans and gender-diverse teenagers: Iris, who grew from a seed; Babs, the daughter of a local witch; and the boy, named so because his current name does not fit him.

The world Evans creates is one of strange magic, free from the trauma and gender dysphoria often associated with representations of transgenderism in literature and film. The characters’ quest to break a curse enables them to demonstrate their resilience, develop their confidence and experience euphoria.

Evans explains (in the author note) their decision to create a positive narrative for trans youth, "I want people to know about gender euphoria. I want them to learn about it before gender dysphoria. I want young trans kids that will read this book to be proud of who they are, and imagine wonderful magic lives for themselves."

4. Meet Cute Diary by Emery Lee (ages 14+)

Meet Cute Diary, a heartfelt young adult romantic comedy, explores gender identity and sexuality – and recognises self-discovery entails continuous questioning, rather than a linear progression.

Noah Ramirez, a Japanese, white, Afro-Caribbean 16-year-old trans boy, loves the idea of falling in love. He writes fictional trans love stories for his blog, “Meet Cute Diary”. Noah is confronted in real life by Drew, a white cisgender boy who Noah has featured on his blog. After Noah explains his actions, Drew agrees to pretend to date him, in order to validate his stories. Their pretending quickly becomes real.

Things become complicated, though, when Noah finds himself attracted to his nonbinary and asexual coworker, Devin. The narrative explores the changing nature of relationships and love.

Lee creates interesting characters and complex relationships that respect gender fluidity and recognise the blurry boundary between the platonic and romantic.

5. Felix Ever After by Kacen Callender (ages 14+)

Felix, the 17-year-old protagonist of Felix Ever After, is Black, queer and trans. The marginalisation and transphobia he experiences are exacerbated when pre-transition images of him are prominently displayed at his school. Felix’s search for revenge sees him open up more about himself to others. And he forms new relationships, including with his friend, Ezra Patel.

Similar to Lee’s depiction of self-discovery in Meet Cute Diary, Callender suggests that learning about yourself and your identity is an ongoing process. Felix continues to make new discoveries about himself, including the realisation that he is not a boy but a demiboy.

Callender’s writing is engaging, and the cast of diverse characters that populate the narrative reflects the variation in our communities. This tender trans young adult romance sensitively explores the complexity of friendship, forgiveness and self-discovery.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

Homeless teen and dad living in park amid housing crisis

A teenager in Queensland has shared the heartbreaking story of being forced to live in a tent with his father amid the state’s housing crisis.

Kailaeb Vescio-Stanley, 17, revealed he has been living in a tent in a Brisbane park with his dad for two weeks while they struggle to find a home.

The teenager told Sunrise, that he and his father had tried to apply for housing but needed more assistance.

“Some nights I don’t get enough sleep and some nights I can,” he said.

“I see heaps of people doing it rough, and the majority of people I see doing it rough in parks are actually teenagers.”

His statement came after more than 40 representatives from government agencies met to discuss the state’s escalating housing crisis in a follow-up meeting to the housing crisis summit in November 2022.

Rents have increased faster in Queensland than any other state or territory, with low-income and regional households copping the brunt of it, according to a Queensland Council of Social Service report.

Annastacia Palaszczuk recently announced Queensland tenants' rent would only increase once a year instead of every six months under a state government proposal to stop the price hike.

“The great majority of landlords do the right thing and look after their tenants, for those who don’t, this is a wake-up call,” the premier said.

The change will see Queensland meet the limits on the frequency of rent increases in NSW, Victoria, Tasmania, SA and the ACT.

Currently, there is a six-month limit in both WA and the NT but only applied if increases are written into the lease agreement.

Property Council of Australia executive director Jen Williams said the meeting was focused on how to best help those in desperate need of support, like Kailaeb.

There are both support measures and supply measures and there are the very immediate people like Kailaeb,” she said.

“Then there’s the short, medium and long-term (questions) about how do we actually get more houses across the board to make sure that we don’t find ourselves in this situation again.”
