"Hilarious" number plate somehow slips past the censors

In a world where innovation knows no bounds, one Perth driver has taken the art of personalised license plates to a whole new level, leaving us all wondering: is it plain rude, or just plain hilariously?

The car in question, a humble Kia Sportage, seems innocent enough at first glance. But wait, what’s that? A custom plate that reads 37OHSSV? Seems harmless, right? Wrong.

It turns out, if you dare to flip the plate upside down, you'll unveil a cheeky message that spells out none other than "a**hole" in bold, red letters. Yes, you read that correctly. Someone actually managed to sneak that past the scrutinizsng eyes of state transport officials.

Unsurprisingly, the discovery of this plate sent the internet into a frenzy, with the post garnering over 2000 shares and nearly 1000 comments. And guess what? Almost everyone loved it!

“This is so clever and hilarious,” exclaimed one amused user, echoing the sentiments of many.

“That’s the best I’ve ever seen,” chimed in another, probably still laughing.

“That is brilliant, I love it,” added a third, undoubtedly already planning their own witty plate.

But amid the laughter and applause, there’s a serious question lingering: How did this driver manage to bypass the stringent regulations that typically govern custom plates?

In the last financial year alone, nearly 1000 applications for personalised plates were rejected in Western Australia due to being deemed too offensive for the road. Among the rejected gems were GEN3CID, SAUC3D, and RAMP4GE. Clearly, the censors were not amused.

And let’s not forget the demographics at play here. According to the stats, a whopping 71 percent of custom plate holders are men, with the average age hovering around 41. So, it seems that mid-life crisis isn’t just limited to buying flashy sports cars; it extends to personalised license plates as well.

So whether you find this particular plate downright rude or ingeniously innovative, one thing’s for sure: it's got people talking. And in a world where monotony often reigns supreme, a little dose of humour and creativity on the road might just be what we need. So, hats off to you, mysterious Perth driver. You may be a bit of an a$$hole – but you’re our kind of a$$hole.

Image: Facebook

“Maybe I shouldn’t have said it”: Kyle lets slip his Idol salary on air

In a surprising turn of events, radio shock jock and KIIS FM star Kyle Sandilands has unintentionally spilled the beans about his substantial salary for the revamped Australian Idol during a recent episode of The Kyle and Jackie O Show.

The revelation came during an interview with pop sensation Dean Lewis, where Sandilands, in a candid moment, discussed the financial perks of his television gig.

The conversation began innocently enough, with Sandilands expressing his frustrations about the time commitment required for television work. It was then that Lewis, in a light-hearted manner, probed the radio presenter on why he had taken on the role in the first place.

Sandilands, initially reluctant to reveal the figures, eventually gave in to the curiosity and admitted, "Listen, it's clearly over a million dollars for three months of work; you'd be a fool not to do it."

However, Sandilands quickly followed up his revelation with a note of uncertainty about whether he was allowed to discuss his salary publicly. He admitted, "I don't know how much they're paying the others, so maybe I shouldn't have said it."

Lewis responded with astonishment, acknowledging that it was, indeed, a substantial sum. “That is a lot of money," he said. "That’s actually epic.”

This salary disclosure comes at a pivotal time for the Australian Idol franchise, as it undergoes significant changes in its judging panel and strives to recapture its former glory. For the series reboot last year, which aired on Channel 7, international music stars Meghan Trainor and Harry Connick Jr. joined the panel, giving it a fresh look. However, they did not return for the 2024 season. In their place, veteran judge Marcia Hines has made a triumphant return to the hot seat, two decades after being part of the original panel when the show debuted in 2003. This time, she joins Sandilands and Amy Shark on the judging panel.

The rebooted Australian Idol faced challenges during its initial run, struggling to attain the ratings it had achieved during its heyday. Upon its premiere in January, the show consistently trailed behind its timeslot competitors, Married At First Sight and Australian Survivor.

Toward the end of the series, it was attracting an average of approximately 409,000 viewers across the five major metropolitan areas, in stark contrast to the 835,000 viewers for MAFS and 536,000 for Australian Survivor.

To make matters more challenging, the winning singer from the show's reboot failed to make a significant impact on the pop charts, further highlighting the hurdles that the revamped Australian Idol faces.

Images: Australian Idol

Kyle Sandilands lets slip INSANE cost of wedding so far

In a twist that everyone saw coming, Kyle Sandilands’ wedding bill is set to be a very, very expensive affair.

He and fiancée Tegan Kynaston made headlines early in 2023 when they revealed their outrageous wedding registry - it was hard to believe that anyone could need a $429 room spray - and don’t seem to have slowed down since.

While chatting to Jackie O Henderson - his co-host on Australia’s number one radio show The Kyle & Jackie O Show - he detailed exactly how much they’d spent so far on their 130-person event.

“The bills were all coming in,” the 51-year-old shock jock said, after discussing how the pair had met with their wedding planner, and Kyle had realised just how much their nuptials were costing them. “They’re fine, they’re manageable.”

“There’s many pages of things,” he went on, “and I’m glancing through and I’m going to the end like ‘what’s the cost of this thing?’

“It didn’t have a total - there’s still a few things to add - but I did notice the flowers are quite expensive.

“$150,000 for flowers.”

And although it was revealed that each guest was to receive a bouquet of flowers to take home with them, Jackie - understandably - couldn’t believe what she was hearing.

“Kyle, that’s more than I spent on my whole wedding,” she said of her own $80k celebration in 2012, “like double.”

Kyle had more to add, going on to reveal that he and Tegan intended to spend a whopping $100,000 on catering ($35,000 on caviar alone). And, of course, the custom linen napkins embroidered with his ‘personalised’ family crest for each of their guests added just a drop in the budget bucket - the co-hosts believed they must cost anywhere between $10,000 to $15,000.

Of the caviar, at least, Jackie could agree the price was right, telling Kyle “that’s worth it. I always think when you do that little sprinkle, that’s stuff that you remember.”

While the couple might have had an opportunity to bring their costs down with their entertainment - with the likes of Guy Sebastian set to perform for free - they decided not to branch out, and coughed up some more money for exactly what they wanted: “the best musicians”.

“You’ve gotta fly in the drummer from Melbourne, and the guitarist needs transfers and an overnight stay,” Kyle explained to Jackie, “they’re coming from all over the country. The best musicians.

“So I think where the band gets expensive … Guy is performing in the marquee, then inside the disco venue - it’s all in the one mansion. Instead of unplugging the keyboard and dragging it inside, I’ve got two setups.”

While the couple are “already up to $250,000 and we’ve only got flowers and food”, it doesn’t seem as though they have any intention of slowing it down, or observing any sort of budget. Especially not if Kyle continues as he has been, having so far “just approved everything just so I could get back to [watching] television.”

Images: Instagram

Woman injures herself after slipping on grapes at ALDI

A mother has called out ALDI for their lack of compassion after she slipped on loose grapes causing her several injuries.

Jenny was at one of the German grocers supermarkets in Melbourne about 6pm on the evening of April 27 when she realised she needed a basket for her items.

She turned around and walked toward the baskets before slipping on several loose grapes that had not been cleaned up.

The single-mother was in visible pain with her daughter and other customers rushing to her aid after the terrible fall which left her with a badly sprained ankle, a lower back injury, swelling and bruising.

Paramedics were called about the incident and asked for Jenny to be removed off the cold floor but the store manager refused saying: “I don’t want to move her and we’re responsible for her”.

Jenny revealed that she was left on the floor for over an hour and was concerned that the manager did not have the training to deal with these incidents.

“It was an hour before she asked my name, and then she wrote it down on a scrap piece of paper,” Jenny told 7News.

While waiting for the paramedics, customers walked past and asked what happened to which Jenny responded that she had slipped on grapes.

She claims that a number of customers said “Oh there are always grapes on this floor”.

The shift manager explained to Jenny that it was hard to monitor the situation as customers would always come in and open the grape bags which sees the loose ones fall.

Jenny was eventually taken to hospital by paramedics where she spent the night as her injuries were assessed.

Since the fall, she has not been able to work to her full limit, making it difficult to pay her bills and look after her family.

Jenny has also been left fuming after not being chased up by ALDI like they said they would - a day after the fall.

She attempted to file a complaint on their website but was asked to pay $2 which would be “fully refunded” which just prompted her to drop it.

She revealed that a manager called her about nine days after the incident claiming he was “dismissive” about the situation and didn’t even ask about her injuries.

According to the publication, ALDI is working with Jenny and an independent claims investigator is assisting her.

“I’ve been a mess since it happened,” she said.

“I don’t think I’ve been treated very nicely. I don’t think I’ve been treated in a compassionate way. I know it’s a corporation we are talking about, but I still expect to be treated like a human.”

Image: 7News

Kyle lets slip the unique name of his unborn son

Kyle Sandilands and his fiancée Tegan Kynaston will be naming their son Otto.

The 50-year-old radio host was discussing co-host Jackie O’s daughter’s future career on Thursday morning when he announced the name.

Jackie mentioned that she was hoping that her 11-year-old Catalina 'Kitty' Henderson would follow in her footsteps and become a radio presenter which Kyle’s son could eventually join.

“I was thinking, because Kyle's having a boy, in 20 years' time, like, it's the ‘Kitty and whatever-you're-going-to-call-your-kid Show’,” she said.

Without hesitating, the shock jock revealed his unborn child’s name, “Otto. That's what we're going to call him.”

Unfortunately, the name has not been taken too well by family members with some even saying it’s still too early to pick one.

“I don't think it's gone down too well with the family. Even Tegan's mum goes, ‘Oh, there's no need to rush into a name’.

“And my auntie Jill went, ‘What sort of stupid name is that?"'

It was then Jackie O realised that she had named her daughter after a popular seafood restaurant in Rose Bay.

Kyle also pointed out that Otto is also an Italian eatery in the inner east suburb of Wooloomooloo.

“I wanted to call my son Grill'd because I like those burgers, but Tegan said no. She prefers Otto.”

“So it’ll be the Kitty and Otto show,” Jackie added.

Kyle and Teagan, who have been dating since 2019, found out Kynaston was expecting last month, and confirmed their child is due in August.

The pregnancy announcement came soon after Kyle got down on one knee and proposed to Teagan while on holiday in Port Douglas.

Image: Instagram

Slip sliding away: Coastal homes under dire threat

Residents along the NSW Central Coast have been left concerned after days of extreme surf caused severe erosion, putting the beachfront homes in danger of collapsing.

A powerful low pressure system across Australia’s east coast earlier this week created large swells and high waves smashing the beaches.

Police, State Emergency Services (SES) and NSW Fire and Rescue were called to homes on Ocean View Drive in Wamberal on Thursday night following reports of erosion at the properties, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

“Dunes are collapsing, people’s houses are at risk of falling into the sea,” a resident told 9News.

Emergency services brought large concrete blocks along the stretch of coast to help support homes from the risk of landslide.

SES controller Rolf Garda said this erosion damage was the worst he had seen in the last 30 years.

“There’s always been impact on that area but for some reason this event has taken away far more land than we expected,” Garda told the ABC.

“We identified that some houses were pretty close to the slump line. We worked with Council to walk up and down and talk to the residents and advised them of the potential dangers.”

Local café worker Amanda Keanelly said the coastal erosion was “so scary” for the residents. “A guy came in yesterday and he told us that his home was a metre away from going in. "I didn't handle it well": Guy Sebastian admits he slipped up

Guy Sebastian has admitted that he "didn't handle it well" last night after a tense episode of The Voice.

Fellow coaches Kelly Rowland and Delta Goodrem ripped into Sebastian for treating a contestant "unfairly".

The episode featured "The Battles" stage of the competition, where coaches put two of their team members against each other to sing the same song in front of the studio audience.

After the song, the coach picks their favourite and another judge has an opportunity to "save" the singer that would be eliminated. The coach can only use one of two saves per Battles stage.

Guy chose Bukhu Ganburged to take on fellow teammate Johnny Manuel, who is a fan favourite to win the competition.

Bukhu had a stunning "Blind Audition", where his Mongolian throat singing allowed him to produce two or more notes at the same time stunned the coaches.

You can't unhear this... The most unbelievable Blind Audition we've EVER seen 🤯 #TheVoiceAU pic.twitter.com/1tvhWP7dVd
— The Voice Australia (@TheVoiceAU) May 26, 2020

However, fans of the show questioned whether or not how far the throat singing would take Bukhu as he would have to sing other songs that had lyrics.

Guy chose Michael Jackson's Earth Song for the duo to perform, with Johnny singing the bulk of the lyrics and Bukhu providing a backing melody with his throat singing.

After the performance, Delta said Guy picked a song she felt was designed to let Johnny shine instead of both singers.

The spine-tingling Battle between Johnny and Bukhu divided our Coaches 🙅‍♂️

Share your Voice - was this a fair Battle? #TheVoiceAU pic.twitter.com/fr0Kzwmp3K
— The Voice Australia (@TheVoiceAU) June 21, 2020

“How was this a battle because it felt like Bukhu was your backing player,” Delta said to Johnny and Guy. “I didn’t at all feel it was fair. Bukhu was backing you and that was it.”

Kelly agreed with Delta, but Guy said that Bukhu made it to the "Battles" round due t his throat singing skill and not his actual singing voice.

“Just so I’m clear,” he said to his fellow judges, “you guys turned around for Bukhu (in the Blind Auditions) for his vocals?”

“Let’s be real,” he continued. “I turned around because there was something unique about Bukhu, but it’s his throat singing and his playing and his insane musicianship.

“What’s unfair is if I get Bukhu to sing up against Johnny,” Guy said.

Delta stood by her point, saying "Right now, we are in a "battle" and it's about giving a song that is fair to both artists".

However, Guy said that Bukhu was happy with the arrangement of the song.

“Bukhu doesn’t put his hand up and say to me that he’s a singer as a pop singer,” Guy said. “He’s not trying to out-sing Johnny, so why would I put him in a position where he doesn’t shine in his best light?”

Host Darren McMullen then asked Bukhu what he thought about the arrangement and whether or not Guy's song choice was unfair to him.

The 35-year-old throat singer said, "Honestly, I don't know actually."

Kelly then stormed off set, saying that she didn't want to continue the argument with Guy.

“I’m not gonna go back and forth with you, Guy, I’m not doing this,” she said as she walked backstage.

“What’s a walk off gonna do?” Guy said to Kelly. “It’s so disrespectful.”

Kelly heard the comment from backstage and yelled back angrily: “No, you’re disrespectful, you’re disrespectful! In that case don’t put them together!”

After the airing of the episode, Guy took to Twitter to explain his side.

pic.twitter.com/3JBCgRJHyt
— Guy Sebastian (@GuySebastian) June 21, 2020

“There is a lot that people don’t see on this show including mentoring and follow up phone calls with the artists. I am disappointed that I didn’t just cop it on the chin and bring focus back to the artists.”

He continued: “It was a challenge having someone like Bukhu and I admit that it seemed vocally unbalanced. I wanted them both 2 shine & thought that showcasing Bukhu’s musicianship was the way 2 do it. He is exceptional and I’m sad that this went down the way it did due to my choice.

“It’s something that cuts me & I didn’t handle it well.”

Slip a more sustainable prawn on your barbie this Christmas

Australians are set to munch through half a billion prawns this Christmas. But where do all those prawns come from? And can we feel good as we throw another one on the barbie?

About half of the prawns eaten in Australia come from overseas. More than A$200 million worth of frozen prawns were imported in 2011–2012, mainly from southeast and east Asia, and these imports are on the rise.

Most of the imported prawns are farm-grown and the main species is commonly known as vannamei, or white shrimp.

The rapid growth of prawn farming has generated public debate over its sustainability and effects on the environment.

Concerns have surrounded the destruction of mangrove areas, coastal pollution, salinisation, wild prawn collection, the use of marine-based feeds, and conflict with other resource users.

But there is some good news: according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, worldwide environmental certification programs such as Global Gap are having a positive influence on farming practices.

Growers are breeding prawns that use protein more efficiently, and adopting low-water-exchange pond systems with less environmental impact. These aerated systems encourage the growth of bacteria and other microorganisms that recycle unused food. Other advances include better biosecurity and traceability, and reduced chemical residues.

Australian scientists are supporting better aquaculture practices in Vietnam by helping farmers to establish prawn breeding programs that improve farm productivity.

Australian farmed prawns

About 20% of Australian prawns are farm grown. Australia has some 20 prawn farms, located mainly in Queensland. The most common farmed species is the black tiger prawn, followed by the banana prawn.

Australian prawn farmers have worked with scientists to develop healthy, fast-growing prawns that can be produced efficiently on farms that meet the world’s highest standards for environmental management.

Research has also addressed the industry’s perceived dependency on marine-based feeds.

What do prawns eat?

Farmed prawns are fed on a compounded pellet made from a range of ingredients that satisfies their nutritional needs.

In Australia, the ingredients include soybeans, lupins and canola, and recycled waste proteins, plus small amounts of sustainably-sourced fish meal and fish oil. But now the technology exists to phase-out these marine ingredients.

A new food additive developed by CSIRO has been shown to improve prawn growth rates by 30% and eliminates the need for fish products in their diet. The additive is moving towards commercial production in Australia and Asia.

Trawling for prawns

The rest of our prawns are harvested by 500 prawn trawlers that operate across 15 Australian fisheries off Queensland, the Northern Territory, Western Australia, South Australia and New South Wales.

The main species caught are king prawns, banana prawns, tiger prawns, school prawns and endeavour prawns.

Wild-caught Australian prawns are available year-round, although some seasonality occurs. Many of the fisheries are remote, so catches are commonly packaged and frozen on board the vessels.

Australian prawn fisheries, like all Australian fisheries, are recognised as among the best-managed in the world.

Scientists work with managers and industry to set fishing levels that are strictly regulated and monitored. Escape hatches in the trawl nets have been used for more than a decade to reduce the capture of large species, and all prawn fisheries must pass ecological assessments to meet conservation and export regulations.

South Australia’s Spencer Gulf Fishery and the Commonwealth Northern Prawn Fishery have both achieved certification from the Marine Stewardship Council, an independent body that certifies sustainable fisheries worldwide.

Look out for labels

All prawns sold at major supermarkets in Australia must be labelled according to the country of origin.

In some states, such as the Northern Territory and South Australia, that compulsory labelling extends to all seafood retail outlets, including restaurants.

Australian prawn farmers and fishers are trying to encourage people to eat Aussie prawns throughout the year with a Love Australian prawns campaign in an effort to smooth out some of the logistics associated with stocking so many prawns at Christmas.

So if you do want to buy homegrown prawns, look out for the labels at your supermarket, or ask your fishmonger where they’ll be getting their supplies from this Christmas.

Paul Hogan’s famous ‘I’ll slip an extra shrimp on the barbie’ ad from 1984. <!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. “She slipped”: Grandfather speaks out about 1-year-old granddaughter’s fatal fall on cruise ship

A northern Indiana grandfather has insisted that he had no idea a cruise ship window was open when his granddaughter, 18 month old Chloe Wiegand, fell to her death on a cruise ship.

"I didn't realise there wasn't any glass until the absolutely that it was too late," Salvatore Anello told "CBS This Morning" in a story that aired Tuesday.

"When she first fell, I thought she fell in front of me. I thought she fell in front of me."

Chloe was in a play area on a cruise ship as it was docked in San Juan, Puerto Rico when she fell 35 metres to the ground.

A grandfather is facing years in prison for accidentally dropping his granddaughter over the railing of a cruise ship. #9Today pic.twitter.com/qSJhW5nkZ1
— The Today Show (@TheTodayShow) 26 November 2019

"All I know is I was trying to reach the glass and I know that we leaned over to try to have her reach the glass, at that point she slipped," Anello said.

"She slipped. She slipped."

Police initially said that Salvatore Anello told officers he lost his grip while holding the girl.

Prosecutors have since charged Anello last month with negligent homicide in the death of his 18-month-old granddaughter.

If convicted, the charge carries a maximum sentence of three years in prison.

When asked about the case, Anello said he’s devastated.

"Chloe being gone is the worst thing ever so I'm like, whatever, you know," Anello said. "There's nothing worse that they could do to me than what's already happened."

"Whether, you know, they find me guilty of whatever or not. It's inconsequential because of what has already happened is so horrible," Anello said.

The grandfather also said that his colour blindness might have impacted whether or not he was able to see the glass.

"Some of the people who've been on the boat have written to me and said, 'David, the windows are tinted, and so it is pretty easy to recognize that it's open,'" CBS News correspondent David Begnaud said.

"I'm colourblind, David," Anello said. "I don't know. I just never saw it. … I've been told that that's a reason that it might have happened."

Anello is scheduled to appear in court in Puerto Rico on December, 17th .
