"I'm shocked": Queen of the jungle crowned in I'm a Celeb finale

The 2024 season of I’m A Celebrity … Get Me Out Of Here! has concluded with the coronation of a new monarch. No, it’s not some royal lineage we’re talking about; it’s the queen of reality TV herself, Skye Wheatley.

After weeks of enduring the culinary horrors of the jungle and the occasional emotional breakdown, Australia has spoken and Skye is officially their jungle royalty. Her reign over the camp was nothing short of spectacular, featuring riveting moments such as her triumph over creepy crawlies, her dramatic monologues about missing Wi-Fi, and of course, her unforgettable friendship with that one tree that seemed oddly supportive.

In an “incredibly close” result that had us all on the edge of our seats (or couches, let’s be real), Skye managed to outshine her fellow campmates and secure the coveted title of Jungle Queen. But it wasn’t just about the glory; it was about the charity, too. Skye walked away with $100,000 for Bully Zero, proving once and for all that you can battle both bullies and bugs and emerge victorious.

In her post-victory interview, Skye expressed her shock at the win, saying, “I’m shocked.” Truly, her eloquence knows no bounds. “I feel absolutely blessed to have had this opportunity, and to go through the things I went through with these boys.”

But behind those eloquent words lies the heart of a true champion, one who faced her fears head-on and emerged triumphant, all while looking fabulous in a khaki jumpsuit.

Before her jungle adventure, Skye confessed that she thought the public expected her to “fall flat on my face”. Well, Skye, the joke’s on them because you soared like a majestic eagle, or at least like a slightly disoriented possum.

And let’s not forget the emotional rollercoaster that was the finale. Tears flowed like the Brisbane River as the top three reunited with their loved ones. It was a moment of pure emotion, a stark contrast to the usual scenes of celebrities eating bugs for our entertainment.

As we bid farewell to another season of jungle shenanigans, we can’t help but reflect on the memories created, the friendships forged, and the questionable food choices made. Here’s to Skye Wheatley, the queen of our hearts and the jungle alike. Long may she reign, or at least until the next season starts.

And to all the celebrities who braved the jungle, whether voluntarily or not, we salute you. May your next adventure be slightly less bug-infested and involve significantly more room service.

New host Robert Irwin had the last word to longtime host Julia Morris: “From the bottom of my heart, I have loved this so much," he said. "It’s been so much fun.”

Images: Network Ten

William Shatner shocks hosts simply by revealing his age

In a world where time ticks mercilessly onward, one man has defied the very essence of ageing: the legendary William Shatner, the man who boldly went where no nonagenarian has gone before.

As Shatner prepares to celebrate his 93rd trip around the sun, fans worldwide are scratching their heads in disbelief. The reason? Well, it seems that Captain Kirk himself has stumbled upon the fountain of youth and decided to keep it all to himself.

The commotion started when Shatner made a guest appearance on the US Today Show, looking fresher than a daisy in springtime. Fans took to social media to express their shock, with one incredulous viewer commenting, "Damn, he's still sharp and has his hair. I would never have guessed 93." And another chimed in with, "I would've guessed 67 or 68."

Forget "live long and prosper"; it seems the new motto is "live long and confound the heck out of everyone".

Even the hosts of the Today Show were left flabbergasted by Shatner's youthful glow. They couldn't resist asking the man himself for his secret to longevity. And what pearls of wisdom did he impart? "Don't tell anybody [your age]." Ah, sage advice indeed. It seems the real secret to ageing gracefully is to maintain an air of mystery.

But let's rewind to 2021 when Shatner was grilled by a journalist about whether he'd had any "serious work" done. His response? A witty comeback, of course. "No, have you?" Touché, Shatner, touché. And when pressed further, he simply attributed his youthful appearance to good genes, lots of horseback riding and a healthy dose of bewilderment about the world.

Despite his apparent disdain for the number 90 ("It's disgusting," he once declared in an interview), Shatner finds himself hurtling towards the ripe old age of 93 with all the grace and poise of a starship navigating through a meteor shower. And if his recent TV appearance is anything to go by, he's showing no signs of slowing down.

So let's all take a leaf out of Shatner's playbook, shall we? If anyone asks for the secret to your eternal youth, just give them that trademark Shatner smirk and say: "It's classified."

Images: NBC | Wikimedia | Tik Tok

You are beautiful. ❤" a third wrote.

A few others thanked Tallulah for her transparency and sharing her autism diagnosis.

"My son is autistic too. And I love the saying, “you know one autistic person, you know…. one autistic person.” Because everyone is so different. My son had stims that look nothing like this. But that certainly doesn’t discount what calms you! Most importantly tho: thank you for this post," wrote one fan.

"This made me cry! I'm also autistic and felt this through my soul. Die Hard was a favourite movie of my dad's & knowing that you share the same diagnosis as me & so many others warms my heart," another commented.

Tallulah has always been candid about her mental and physical health, as she recently opened up about her experience with anorexia nervosa and told her followers that recovery is not linear and can sometimes be "messy."

Image: Getty

It wasn’t one of those things where you hit turbulence and you drop a few times … we just dropped.”

He added that a passenger two seats away from him, who was not wearing his seatbelt, flew up into the ceiling and was suspended mid-air before he fell and broke his ribs.

“I thought I was dreaming,” he said. “I opened my eyes and he was on the roof of the plane on his back, looking down on me. It was like The Exorcist.”

Paramedics and more than 10 emergency vehicles were waiting for passengers when the plane landed in Auckland.

Around 50 patients were treated, with 12 of them hospitalised and one in serious condition.

At least three of those treated were cabin crew.

Jokat told RNZ that after the plane landed, the pilot came to the back and explained what had happened.

"He said to me, ‘I lost my instrumentation briefly and then it just came back all of a sudden,’” Jokat said.

In another interview with Stuff.co.nz, Jokat recalled the pilot also saying: “My gauges just blanked out, I lost all of my ability to fly the plane.”

The airline's final destination was Santiago, Chile, but it was landing at Auckland Airport in accordance with its normal flight path, according to Reuters.

"LATAM regrets the inconvenience and injury this situation may have caused its passengers, and reiterates its commitment to safety as a priority within the framework of its operational standards," the airline said.

Images: Brian Jokat/ News.com.au

The impact of her visit resonated deeply with the performers, who were left speechless by her kind words and support.

Choreographer and event coordinator Janina Hamerlok captured the essence of Pink's visit, describing her as "completely lovely and extremely down to earth". Pink's recognition of the production's homage to the Latino community, on which "In The Heights" is based, really showed her genuine appreciation for the arts.

Despite her superstar status, Pink opted for tickets in the upper level dress circle. However, her presence inevitably led to a well-deserved upgrade to house seats.

Pink's surprise visit clearly uplifted the spirits of the theatre group. As she continues her Summer Carnival tour across Australia, her impromptu visit shows her unwavering support for the arts and her genuine connection with fans – especially in Australia!

Images: Instagram

"I was shocked": Lisa Wilkinson's text messages shown in court

A series of explosive texts revealed in court have shown how Lisa Wilkinson's controversial Logies speech led to her untimely dismissal from The Project.

The texts are contained in an affidavit that Wilkinson and her lawyers have submitted to the Federal Court in relation to a dispute over who will pay her million-dollar legal fees after being sued by Bruce Lehrmann for defamation.

In an affidavit to the Federal Court, Wilkinson said she was shocked when she found out she was being let go from The Project, after she discovered her agent Nick Fordham had a meeting with Network Ten CEO Beverley McGarvey.

“I was shocked, embarrassed and deeply disappointed by Ms McGarvey’s decision to remove me from The Project,” she said.

“At that time, my most recent contract as co-host of The Project had only been signed 11 months before and still had more than two years to run.”

Speaking of her agent's meeting, she said, “He told me that Ms McGarvey had informed him that Ten was doing a ‘rebrand’ of The Project with a number of hosting changes. He told me that she had said that those hosting changes included me."

“He also told me that she had said that, because there had been too much heat on me in the months since the Logies speech – and, as a result, too much ‘brand damage’ – it was best that I be removed from my hosting role on The Project.”

When she said farewell to The Project in 2022, Wilkinson blamed the “targeted toxicity” of sections of the media.

“The last six months have not been easy,” Wilkinson told viewers of the panel show when she announced she would be leaving the show.

“And the relentless, targeted toxicity by some sections of the media has taken a toll not just on me but on people I love."

“I have had a ball,” she said. “But for me right now it’s time for a change. To be clear. I’m not leaving Ten and we’re looking at some very exciting work ideas ahead.”

In the affidavit, she says that Ms McGarvey approved Wilkinson’s on-air explanation for her departure and suggested that they “sound very authentic”.

“I said to her that this decision to remove me from The Project would result in yet more negative publicity for me, for The Project, and for Ten, particularly if my sudden departure was without explanation,” Wilkinson said.

Ms McGarvey told Wilkinson in texts “Perfect delivery, you spoke from the heart.”

“It was a beautiful sentiment and you are so generous to your colleagues. Thank you. The media should all be kind, you deserve it.”

Shocking reason why woman was dumped as her best friend’s bridesmaid

A friendship has broken down live on radio, after a woman was dumped from being a bridesmaid after trying to attend a Taylor Swift concert the same night as her best friend’s wedding.

Liv was one of thousands of Aussies who secured tickets to see Taylor Swift when her Eras Tour heads Down Under in February. Unfortunately for the young woman, the only night she could get tickets for was the same night as her best friend Jess’ wedding, where she was set to be a bridesmaid.

Knowing about the concert while the wedding planning was taking place, Liv said she was nervous to tell Jess about the show, and decided to keep it secret while they were shopping for wedding outfits.

Calling into the Fifi, Fev & Nick radio show, Liv wanted advice on how to tell her friend that she planned to attend Jess’ wedding ceremony, and then leave the reception to attend the concert.

The radio hosts decided to let the two women hash it out live on air, with Liv saying to her friend at the start of the phone call, “Obviously the whole Taylor thing, we've been talking about it and you've been saying how annoying it is that people have been backing out.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Fifi, Fev & Nick (@fififevnick)

“But I haven't told you I got tickets for the Saturday and this was done before Christmas. However, I was thinking of trying to compromise here and make it work.”

Liv shared her plan to “scoot off” in the middle of the big day, to which Jess was convinced she was being “pranked”.

“I feel really bad, I do but I have loved Taylor for so long, you are aware of this and you knew how hard it was to get tickets,” Liv replied.

But Jess flew off the handle at her friend, slamming her for withholding the news and poking holes in her compromise.

“You've known this before December and it's three weeks until my wedding and you're telling me now?” she said.

“You want to miss a part of my wedding to go to a Taylor Swift concert? You know how much this has been annoying me that people have been dropping out to go to her and you've known all along that you're going to go to her concert.”

Liv said she feels like a “bad friend” before breaking down in tears, although Jess wasn’t having it.

“I don't even understand though you've gone and bought tickets on my wedding date. I'm not trying to be mean right now, I think I'm just angry before I'm even upset because I'm so stressed, it's three weeks out,” she said.

Host Fifi Box suggested Liv skip the concert, but she was hesitant calling the show a “once in a lifetime” opportunity.

The pair eventually hung up, with Jess ringing into the radio show in the weeks after to share an update.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; Shocking twist on teen accused of pushing elderly man off pier

Just hours after a 14-year-old boy was arrested for allegedly shoving an elderly man off the Mornington Peninsula pier, the teenager has been accused of previously assaulting a woman.

Jamie Tilbrook, 35, was allegedly bashed by the same group of teens who pushed the 79-year-old off the pier.

Shocking CCTV footage of the alleged attack showed two boys throwing a series of punches towards Ms Tilbrook's head in broad daylight, after she confronted them for vandalising a bus and tipping bins over.

"I said, 'What the f--- are you doing?' They turn around and jump me," she said.

"Two boys just come and started smashing me in the head. I was telling my girlfriend to get away, like, I didn't want her to get attacked."

The 35-year-old had to be rushed to hospital after losing consciousness and spent a night at The Alfred, where doctors had to glue her wound shut.

Ms Tilbrook told 9News that she no longer goes out and night and has to constantly watch her back after the alleged assault.

The incident came just two months before the alleged attack of the elderly man, and the 14-year-old boy was on bail when he pushed the man off the pier.

Ms Tilbrook revealed she was "disgusted" that the same boy who was charged after allegedly assaulting her, was now accused of pushing a fisherman off the pier.

His friends had filmed the horrific incident before posting it online.

9News revealed that the teenager has since been charged over the assault and allegedly breaching his bail conditions.

He will reportedly face children's court at a later date.

Images: 9News

Shocking amount Australia's richest people earn per hour

Three of Australia's richest people — Gina Rinehart, Andrew Forrest and Harry Triguboff — have more than doubled their wealth since 2020, according to the charity Oxfam.

A report from the charity published on Monday, found that the fortune of Australia's richest people doubled at a staggering rate of $1.5 million per hour.

The report also found that the total wealth of the country’s billionaires increased by $120 billion in that same period, which is over 70 per cent.

Tech tycoons Elon Musk, Mark Zuckerberg and Jeff Bezos, are among the top five richest men worldwide, with the report finding that it would take them 476 years to spend all of their wealth if they spent $1.5 million daily.

The global wealth of billionaires grew three times faster than the inflation rate, and they are $4.9 trillion richer today than they were in 2020, despite nearly five billion people worldwide growing poorer.

According to the Australian Council of Social Services, one in eight adults are living in poverty, earning half of the median household income which ranges from $489 a week for a single adult to $1,027 for a couple with two kids.

The report was released to raise concern over the growing global inequality, as they urge the federal government to reduce the wealth gap by scrapping the stage three tax cuts coming into effect on July 1.

The tax cuts will lower marginal tax rates for high-earning Australians.

Oxfam Australia chief executive Lyn Morgain has urged governments to step up.

“We cannot accept a society that promotes the gross accumulation of wealth alongside widespread global poverty,” she said.

“One of the best mechanisms we have to address this is progressive taxation.

“The shame of our woeful global response to catastrophic disasters, displacement, famine and the climate crisis cannot be attributed to a scarcity of resources, it is distribution — and that’s a problem all governments, including the Australian government, need to tackle urgently.”

Oxfam have also called for a wealth tax on the world's millionaires and billionaires that it claims could bring in $2.7 trillion each year.

The report also called to cap CEO pay and break up private monopolies, which have gained significant power thanks to surging stock prices.

Images: Getty

Could you cope with a shock to your bank balance? 5 ways to check you are financially resilient

Bomikazi Zeka, University of Canberra

Imagine the dentist has just said you urgently need a A$2,000 dental crown. A week later, a pipe in your bathroom bursts, causing $8,000 worth of damage. Suddenly, you’ve been hit with a $10,000 financial shock.

As the cost-of-living crisis plunges more households into financial uncertainty and at least one-third of Australians struggle to make ends meet, it’s more important than ever to ask yourself: how financially resilient am I?

Being financially resilient means you aren’t left financially devastated when an expensive emergency creeps up on you. Here are five key signs of financial resilience.

1. You have a plan for what you’d do if you suddenly lost your salary

Financial resilience means having a plan to fall back on during tough times. This extends to how you’d make money if you lost your job.

In practice, that means things like making sure your skills and contacts are kept up to date so you can more easily find a new job. You might also consider whether a “side hustle” job such as tutoring could work for you in the short term, and how you’d put that plan into practice if needed. Perhaps you have a spare room in your home you could rent out for a period of time if you lost your salary.

Those examples won’t work for everyone, of course, but it’s still worth asking yourself the question: what would I do if I lost my salary tomorrow?

2. You have enough liquid assets to meet an unexpected financial expense

Liquid assets means money that can be accessed quickly and easily to overcome an unplanned financial expense. Savings are a good example. They provide a buffer so you can cope in the short term if a financial shock strikes. The federal government’s Moneysmart website suggests you aim to have enough in your emergency savings fund to cover three months of expenses.

Having an offset account as part of a mortgage is another option that provides a buffer. Putting money in an offset account helps you save while reducing the amount of interest on a home loan. You can still access the money in an offset account at any time.

3. You have bought the right financial products, such as insurance

Financial products, such as insurance, hedge against potential losses.

Personal insurance is important because it provides income in the event of death, illness or injury. Examples include:

life insurance (which pays out to your beneficiaries, such as your partner or children, when you die)

total and permanent disability insurance (which means you may get some money if you acquire a disability that prevents you from working)

income protection (which provides you with an income if you can no longer work)

trauma cover (which covers a life-changing illness or injury, such as cancer or a stroke).

Check if your superannuation has any of these insurances included in it. Research has found that many Australians are underinsured.

4. You can still pay your debts when times are tough

Being able to borrow money can help when you’re in a tight spot. But knowing where to borrow from, how much to borrow and how to manage debt repayments is crucial.

Financially resilient people use debt responsibly. That means:

not using debt for frivolous expenses like after-work drinks

staying away from private money lenders

being cautious about buy-now-pay-later services

watching out for debts with high interest rates, such as payday loans and credit card debt

maintaining debt repayments consistently.

If you’re having debt problems, talk to your lender about renegotiating your repayment arrangements, or contact the National Debt Helpline on 1800 007 007.

5. You are financially literate

Being financially literate means you can assess the benefits and risks of using savings or taking out debt to meet an unplanned financial need.

As I have written before on The Conversation, key signs of financial literacy include tracking your cashflow, building a budget, as well as understanding what debts you have and which to pay first.

It also means storing your money across different places (such as superannuation, savings accounts, property and the share market) and understanding how financial assets like cash, shares and bonds work.

Being aware of your financial strengths and weaknesses, and having financial goals is also important.

Nobody is born knowing how to make sound financial decisions; it’s a skill that must be learned.

It’s good to think about the resources you would draw upon to help get yourself out of a difficult financial situation – well before disaster strikes.<!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag.
