Sarah Ferguson sends her well wishes to Kate Middleton

Sarah Ferguson has shared a hopeful message for Kate Middleton in the wake of her cancer diagnosis.

The Duchess of York, who has battled both breast and skin cancer in the last year, said she was impressed and proud of the Princess of Wales for coming forward with the news of her diagnosis, while also sending her well wishes as her health journey continues.

In a statement to her Instagram page, Fergie wrote, "All my thoughts and prayers are with the Princess of Wales as she starts her treatment. I know she will be surrounded by the love of her family and everyone is praying for the best outcome."

She continued, "As someone who has faced their own battle with cancer in recent months, I am full of admiration for the way she has spoken publicly about her diagnosis and know it will do a tremendous amount of good to raise awareness."

"I hope she will now be given the time, space and privacy to heal."

The Duchess is no stranger to difficult diagnoses, as she shared the news of her skin cancer diagnosis in January - just months after undergoing surgery for breast cancer.

On Saturday, Kate Middleton confirmed she had been diagnosed with cancer in a personal video message released by Kensington Palace, following weeks of speculation and controversy surrounding the true state of her health.

"Each bauble represents a life lost": Haunting Christmas tree sends powerful message

As the holiday season approaches, a haunting symbol of despair has once again taken root at Victoria Police headquarters – carrying with it a message of melancholy that we are unaccustomed to at this normally festive time of year.

Instead of joyous ornaments and twinkling lights, a Christmas tree adorned with glistening blue baubles now stands as a remarkably poignant testament to the road death carnage that has befallen the state throughout 2023.

These beautiful baubles, each etched with the name and age of those lost on Victoria's roads this year, tell a grim tale of grief and loss. With the toll reaching 274 by December 6, it marks the darkest year for the state since 2008.

In a moving video accompanying the dressing of the tree, Road Policing Assistant Commissioner Glenn Weir implored the public to drive cautiously during the Christmas period, desperately hoping to prevent the addition of any more baubles to this sorrowful tree.

"This Christmas tree is unlike any other; it's one we don't want to see decorated," Commissioner Weir soberly explained. "Each bauble represents a life lost, a stark reminder of the importance of road safety. Please, drive safely this festive period. Take care, have conversations with your loved ones, and remember the responsibility you bear when behind the wheel."

November alone witnessed the loss of 35 lives on Victorian roads, marking it as the worst month this year. In response, the police are intensifying road policing operations throughout December in an attempt to curb further tragedies.

In a bid to address the escalating death toll, the Transport Accident Commission (TAC) has launched the initiative "Stop kidding yourself. If you drink, don't drive," running from December 4 to the end of January.

Shockingly, it has also been revealed that one in five individuals killed on Victorian roads had a blood alcohol concentration of .05 or higher.

TAC CEO Tracey Slatter also called on the urgent need for a cultural shift, challenging the notion that driving after consuming any amount of alcohol should be deemed "normal".

"Many people think they can manage their blood-alcohol level with vague rules handed down through generations," she said. "But the only way to avoid the risk entirely is to completely separate drinking and driving."

As the Christmas tree of remembrance continues to grow with each passing day, it stands as a poignant symbol of the lives lost on Victoria's roads, imploring society to reflect, change and prioritise the safety of every journey.

Images: Victoria Police

Happy ending after company's awful retirement send-off

An elderly gentleman in the United States, who had faithfully served as an "extremely dependable" employee for 42 years, recently experienced a remarkable change in his fortunes, thanks in large part to the generosity of individuals from Australia.

John Bartlett, the dedicated worker in question, had received underwhelming recognition from an unnamed company for his decades of commitment. His daily 40-minute commute on public transportation to a job paying only the minimum wage went largely unnoticed until recently, causing widespread consternation.

Sonia, one of his colleagues, was deeply moved by the perceived injustice and decided to share a video clip of Bartlett's story online. In her post, she expressed her wish that his hard work had been better acknowledged and thanked him for his unwavering loyalty. She noted that Bartlett loved his job so much that he was reluctant to retire, receiving nothing more than a barbecue and a certificate as a token of appreciation.

After sharing Bartlett's story on social media, Sonia was inundated with messages from people eager to contribute to his well-deserved retirement. Responding to this outpouring of support, she set up a GoFundMe campaign, inviting the public to contribute "a little something for a better retirement" for him.

Within a matter of days, the fundraiser received an overwhelming response, with donations and messages pouring in from around the world, including numerous contributions from Australians. The campaign was eventually closed after more than 1,900 individuals contributed, resulting in a total of A$57,454 for Bartlett's retirement fund.

In his 70s, Bartlett was left speechless when Sonia shared this incredible news with him. She conveyed the global impact of his story and the messages of support he had received from people across the globe. Overwhelmed by the gesture, Bartlett could only smile and nod in response.

“They left messages for you," said Sonia in the video. "So I’m going to print it out and go ahead and make something nice for you so you can read it on your own time. We started the GoFundMe because they wanted to give you something for your retirement on their part and it just blew up overnight. You deserve it, OK? I’m going to make sure everything goes to your account, just for you.”

Supporters encouraged Bartlett to use the funds for special treats, like a grand holiday or for spending time with loved ones. Messages from donors expressed their heartfelt wishes for his retirement and new beginnings.

Sonia expressed her gratitude to the donors, assuring them that every cent raised would be placed directly into Bartlett's account. In her final update to the GoFundMe account, she thanked donors for their kindness and reaffirmed her commitment to ensuring Bartlett received every penny, attributing the success of the campaign to their collective efforts.

In the end, the power of community and compassion won out, as people from all walks of life came together to make a meaningful difference in the life of an individual who had dedicated so much to his job.

Images: TikTok

“You deserve more”: Company slammed over measly send-off party

A company has been slammed online for their measly attempt to farewell a hard-working employee of 42 years.

John Barlett was a dedicated worker for four decades, commuting long distances to work at minimum wage and give his all to his colleagues.

After 42 years of hard work, John announced his retirement from the company, prompting a measly farewell party from his place of work.

One of John’s longtime co-worker, Sonia, was devastated over the injustice, sharing a short clip to social media of John – now in his 70s – and what she felt was his hard work going unappreciated.

“Today is my co-worker’s last day. He worked for this company for 42 years making minimum wage,” Sonia wrote with the video.

“The company only threw him a barbecue and gave him a certificate. He takes the bus and Bart (train) to get here every day on time. He’s 70+.”

“He loves working here so much he didn’t want to retire. [He got] No bonus, just a barbecue and a certificate. Don’t be a slave to your job. Thank you John for your loyalty.”

The video quickly went viral and was flooded with comments of support for John, with one person even suggesting that John start a GoFundMe for people to contribute to his retirement.

In the fundraiser, she revealed John could not drive because of a disability, but “rain or shine” would always make it to work.

He was “extremely dependable”, Sonia added, revealing it had been difficult to convince him to take a break because he always wanted to work.

He was “one of the most talented and hard working” employees at the company and his energy was “unmatched”, she said.

“He has no wife or kids, however he does have a nephew whom he loves dearly,” she wrote in the fundraiser.

“It would be nice to give him some kind of company or something to do so he knows that he’s special and loved.”

In the few days since the GoFundMe was created, it has raised almost $45,000, as many shared their comments of support.

One person wrote, “Happy retirement, John. You deserve more than what this company has offered you. Wish you all the best in your life and your future.”

Jackie O sends welfare check for concerning caller

Radio giant Jackie ‘O’ Henderson has requested a welfare check for a listener after receiving a distressing phone call on The Kyle and Jackie O show.

The caller, Michael, who made it on air at about 6:30 am during the First Calls segment on the show, proceeded to sing a song about suicide, blindsiding the presenters.

The song was Fade to Black by U.S heavy metal band Metallica, from their 1984 album Ride the Lightning. The bleak track is about wondering if life is worth living and wishing for death.

Michael did not advise the hosts that he would be singing the song, and had told producer ‘Intern Pete’ Deppeler off air that he was a ‘comedian’ and ‘had a few jokes to tell’.

Henderson seemed concerned and asked the team to make sure the listener was okay.

The dismal segment started soon after an ad break, with host Kyle Sandilands asking, “You want to ring up for anything? First Calls, 13 10 65 will get you through. Michael has called in. Hey, Michael.”

“Hello,” Michael responded, sounding dismal, which the hosts recognised was off as Sandilands was quick to mimic ‘hello’ back.

Sandilands asked how the listener was doing, to which Michael replied, “Oh, not bad. I [inaudible] have a quick ten-second song I'd like to... sing for you.”

'What, sorry? A song?' Henderson asked.

“It goes like this,” Michael said, before singing the lyrics to Fade to Black, “.. lost the will to live / Simply nothing more to give / There is nothing more for me / Need the end to set me free.”

Michael put his own spin on the song, singing lyrics that don’t appear on the track, “Never cared for no one else” before quickly hanging up.

“Don't be like that…”, a baffled Sandilands said after Michael abruptly ended the call.

Henderson feared the worst, immediately asking producers, “Is he alright? That didn't sound good, guys. What were you getting off air? Because that sounded like a goodbye song to me.”

Sandilands tried to reassure Henderson, saying “He seems fine. He seems fine.”

Deppeler, who had spoken to Michael during the ad break and briefed him on what would be discussed on air said, “He was normal to me,”

When Henderson asked what they’d spoken about during the ad break, Deppeler told the presenter, "He said, 'I'm a comedian, I've got a few jokes to tell, I've got a new song.'”

“So he went rogue on you?' Henderson asked, with Deppeler replying, “A little bit rogue, yeah”.

Henderson asked Deppeler to “call him back and check he's okay,” adding, "He just hung up and said this is the end for me. Just check he's alright, that guy.”

She awkwardly laughed as she and Sandilands scolded Deppeler for having such a grim listener as the first caller following a two-week break.

The presenters then moved on to the second caller, A woman called Debbie.

Help is available, speak with someone today.

Crisis support is available from Lifeline on 13 11 14.

Support is available from Beyond Blue on 1300 22 4636.

Airline sends woman 13 brand new suitcases as compensation

A woman has been left shocked and confused after being sent 13 brand new suitcases as compensation.

Giséle Rochefort was flying with Delta Airlines in the US when her luggage was badly damaged on her flight.

"Delta destroyed my suitcase.
A Qantas passenger has been left stunned after seeing a man writing “racist” texts about her and her son after claiming the toddler kicked the back of his chair.

The woman and her one-year-old had been aboard Qantas flight QF158 from Auckland to Melbourne when she saw the disgruntled passenger describe her as a “fat Islander woman” and her son as a “black kid kicking me”.

She took to Facebook to share her story, saying the ordeal brought her to tears and had her questioning if she could ever fly without her husband again.

The mother said the tension between her and the man seated in front of her son began when he turned around and shook his head at the one-year-old.

She asked the man if anything was wrong, whom she claims responded, “I just hope he doesn't kick my seat the whole way”.

She said she felt confused because, from her son’s position, his legs could barely dangle off his chair, let alone kick the seat in front.

The mother told the passenger in front that her son’s legs were too short to do so and added that if he was so concerned about sitting in front of a child, then he should have flown business class.

Mid-air, the mother spotted the man venting his anger to a friend via text, referring to her as a “fat Islander woman” and her son as a “black kid”.

“I feel as though the whole interaction had nothing to do with my son 'kicking' his chair but merely something to do of how we looked with his racial comments or simply because I had a child who was sitting right behind him,” she wrote.

The woman claimed when she confronted the man about the nasty texts, he appeared “shocked” and immediately started to delete the message.

At this point, the mother said that she and her son were both “tired, frustrated and mad”.

The mother eventually moved to the back of the plane after a flight attendant was made aware of the ordeal.

In her Facebook post, she thanked a man and his teenage son who volunteered to sit in their original seats behind the disgruntled man.

“I'm not one to share anything or write statuses but this one I was prompted to in the hopes that if you see anything like that I hope you are not a bystander like the many people on that flight who didn't bother to help or do anything.”

Despite the incident, she and her son are doing well, but she will “definitely” not be travelling without her husband ever again.

Facebook users flocked to the comments and were quick to sympathise with the woman.

“Your so brave, even in tears you still the bigger person who stood up for yourself against such bullying and racism,” one comment read.

“Traveling with a toddler is hard and that punk made it worst for you!” another said.

“I'm so sorry you had to go through that sis, my gosh the audacity this man has,” a third wrote.

"You have done it your way:" Karl's send-off for Tracy Grimshaw

Karl Stefanovic has paid tribute to his colleague Tracy Grimshaw following her shock bombshell announcement of retiring as host of A Current Affair.

Grimshaw has been the face of the show for a whopping 17 years and shocked audiences when she announced she is stepping down at the end of the year and going on an extended break.

Stefanovic reminisced about his time with Grimshaw, who at one point was his co-host, and congratulated her on her work on the news program saying she “is the best” he’d seen.

"There are few interviewers in this country that are as balanced, as incisive, as well briefed and as well loved," he said.

"You have made your mark, Tracy Grimshaw, and you have done it your way."

He also revealed some of the advice he received from the veteran journalist, who told him that it was a tough industry to be a part of.

"She told me to stop being needy and grow up, because the industry will not be easy if you are soft - and it wasn't," he said.

Karl pointed out Tracy’s infamous eyebrow raise - which he said instilled fear in viewers as they watched the program.

Tracy dropped the bombshell news on September 5, saying she wanted her viewers to hear it from her first.

“Normally right about now we'd be telling you what to expect tomorrow night but lately I've personally been thinking longer term, and I have some news that I wanted you to hear from me before you hear it from anyone else," she said.

"I've decided to finish up with A Current Affair this year.

"It's been a big decision and before the gossip websites start telling you rubbish, I want you to know it's been my decision alone and I'm not being shoved out the door by the boys club because I'm too old.

"I'm not too old, I'm just a bit tired. And for the record both the boys and the girls have asked me to stay.

"But I've basically been a shift worker for 26 years, driving to work before dawn for nine years on the Today Show, and the past 17 years driving home after dark here on A Current Affair and it's time for less of that daily obligation."

Images: Nine

This common bathroom practice could send germs flying everywhere

No matter how thorough you are with cleaning your bathroom, there's one common mistake you could be making that regularly fills the space with germs.

According to home hacks expert Stephanie Booth, that habit is leaving the toilet lid up when you flush. You’ll probably never do it again once you hear what she has to say about it in a TikTok.

@stephanieboothrealtor Who’s still flushing their toilet with the lid open? And all that bacteria lands on all the nearby surfaces, including your toothbrush," she said.

If you're wondering just how true this claim is, it's been backed up by Australia's favourite scientist Dr Karl Kruszelnicki, explaining why it’s such a gross habit in a video of his own.

@drkarl Do you need scientific evidence to make your housemates flush with the toilet lid shut? NASA’s Perseverance rover sends back Mars soundscape playlist

Nearly two years after its launch, and almost 18 months after landing on Mars, NASA’s Perseverance rover has hours of audio recordings from the red planet’s atmosphere.

So, what does Mars sound like? On the whole, it’s quiet. Very quiet. But the recordings did pick up interesting weather events and changes which give us a better overall picture of Mars’s clime.

Perseverance’s primary mission is to explore sediments in a dormant river delta on the edge of the 45 kilometre-wide Jezero Crater, to learn about the crater’s formation and hopefully find signs of ancient life. But microphones are light and cheap, so it made sense to add a couple to the rover’s instruments.

The first audio from Mars was sent by Perseverance earlier this year. Now, a year’s worth of recording from the Martian atmosphere has been condensed into about five hours of sound.

The findings are due to be presented by Baptiste Chide of the Los Alamos National Lab during a seminar, “Mars soundscape: Review of the first sounds recorded by the Perseverance microphones,” at the 182nd Meeting of the Acoustical Society of America tomorrow, May 25, in Denver in the US.

With no large dynamical natural phenomena, extant animal species (that we know of), industrial civilisation, or extreme weather events, you’d expect Mars to be pretty silent. And it is. Under the same conditions on Earth, sounds are 20 decibels louder than on Mars.

“It is so quiet that, at some point, we thought the microphone was broken!” says Chide.

But, like giving a new music album a second run-through, closer listening revealed some fascinating phenomena. The group heard much variability in the wind and abrupt changes in the atmosphere, see-sawing from calm to intense gusts.

The team noticed that the red planet’s soundscape is seasonal. During winter, carbon dioxide freezes in the polar caps. This causes changes in atmospheric density, and environmental volume fluctuates by about 20%. Atmospheric CO2 also causes high-pitched sounds in the distance to become fainter.

The rover also used laser sparks to calculate the speed of sound’s dispersion, confirming a theory that high-frequency sounds travel faster than low frequencies.

“Mars is the only place in the solar system where that happens in the audible bandwidth because of the unique properties of the carbon dioxide molecule that composes the atmosphere,” notes Chide. While the rover will continue to record audio as it travels across Mars’s surface, Chide believes that the technique could be applied to studies of other celestial bodies. Planets and moons with denser and more volatile atmospheres, such as Venus and Titan, may yield even more information as sound waves interact more strongly and travel further.

<!-- Start of tracking content syndication. Crackin’ election result sends Liberal Party spinning

Saturday night’s election win for the Labor Party has seen members of the Liberal Party begin to question what the future holds, while one MP said outgoing Prime Minister Scott Morrison should have quit months ago.

It comes after footage from 9News captured Mr Morrison showing off his whip-cracking skills while his wife Jenny served margaritas at an afternoon party at Kirribilli House on Sunday.

The footage also showed Mr Morrison sipping on a beer, and Jenny and their daughter Abbey having a crack at using the whip.

#EXCLUSIVE: The outgoing Prime Minister hosted his last function at Kirribilli House this afternoon - with drinks, canapes, and whip-cracking to mark the occasion. @MarkWBurrows #9News pic.twitter.com/JFCezxtP6R

— 9News Sydney (@9NewsSyd) May 22, 2022

Reporter Mark Barrows said the event was “a chance for the Morrisons to say thank you to their staff and their families” before they leave the official residence and return to the Shire, allowing incoming PM Anthony Albanese to move in.

Meanwhile, various Liberal MPs have begun weighing in on the brutal election results - with the party set to lose 17 seats - and on the direction of the party in the future.

One MP said Mr Morrison should have resigned months ago when polls showed he had little support among voters, but instead he “strapped himself to the Liberal Party like a suicide bomber and blew the whole show up”, per The Sydney Morning Herald.

Outgoing finance minister and moderate Senator Simon Birmingham, one of the first to speak out publicly, said the party was paying the price for failing to lock in climate and energy policy during Malcolm Turnbull’s leadership.

These sentiments were echoed by outgoing Treasurer Josh Frydenberg, who called on the party to be better at “articulating” its climate change achievements.

“Australia has not been well served by the culture wars on climate change,” he said.

However, Queensland Nationals Senator Matt Canavan has warned the party against catering to Left-leaning voters.

“If Left is code for higher taxes, more government regulation and woke policies, I can’t see how that’s a recipe for success,” he said.

Another outgoing Liberal minister said the party was struggling to bridge the gap between wealthy inner-city voters and the rest of Australia, and that it might be that the divide was too wide to bridge.

Several Liberal sources have defended Mr Morrison, saying he was the victim of Labor’s character assassination strategies, while others urged for party members to wait for the “dust to settle” before decisions were made about the party’s ideological direction.

Outgoing Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews, who lost a significant number of primary votes to the Greens, said the Liberals needed to “go back” and “look at our values… to make sure we are properly representing the Australian people”.

Though the Liberals have suffered significant losses in New South Wales, Victoria, and Western Australia, the Nationals have seemed to hold all of its seats.

As a result, Queensland is looking to be a stronghold for the Coalition with the state accounting for a third of Federal Liberal-aligned seats.

One MP said Queensland would have “a big say within the party” about what the Coalition and Liberals would do going forward.

Queensland MP Garth Hamilton said the party needed to be “honest, credible and painfully earnest” following the election and defended the Coalition’s position as a “broad church”.

“The idea of a broad church demands that we remain reflective of a range of views, we need to continue to be that,” he said.

“Losing our Left flank is going to be a challenge. Denazify Ukraine? This is not true!

“Ukraine is a country with a Jewish president, a Jewish president I might add, whose father’s three brothers were all murdered by the Nazis.

“You see, Ukraine did not start this war. Neither did the nationalists or Nazis. Those in power in the Kremlin started the war. This is not the Russian people’s war.

“As a matter of fact … what you should know is that 141 nations at the UN voted that Russia was the aggressor.

“They called for it to remove its troops immediately. Only four countries in the entire world voted with Russia. This is a fact.”

Schwarzenegger spoke about how Russian artillery and bombs have destroyed “whole city blocks”, including hospitals, and of the three million refugees who have fled the country.

“It is a humanitarian crisis,” he said.

“Because of its brutality, Russia is now isolated from the society of nations. You’re also not being told the truth about the consequences of this war on Russia itself.

“I regret to tell you that thousands of Russian soldiers have been killed.

“They have been caught between Ukrainians fighting for their homeland and the Russian leadership fighting for conquest.”

He said that both the citizens and soldiers had been lied to by the government, and that the wildly different things they have been told - from going to fight Nazis to particpating in training exercises - were all false.

He then questioned the Russian government’s willingness to sacrifice soldiers for “your own ambitions”, and urged Russians listening to help him spread the truth.

“Let your fellow Russians know the human catastrophe that is happening in Ukraine,” he said.

Schwarzenegger’s message came as Ukrainian cities continued to be bombed, with the capital Kyiv being the target of missiles early on Thursday morning.

The southern city of Mariupol was also the target of heavy attack, with city officials estimating at least 2400 people had died as a result.

According to US authorities, an estimated 28,000 Russian soldiers have been killed or wounded during the three-week invasion.

Image: @schwarzenegger (Instagram)

Neighbour sends confronting note about a nearby home’s exterior

A neighbour has been left feeling shocked after they received a scathing note that details how they have been letting down their street.

The author of the letter, who is new to the neighbourhood, has detailed all the ways that the house needs to be renovated to keep up appearances.

The letter was posted on Reddit, and reads, “Dear neighbour. Just thought I'd drop a line to ask you to do something with your house.

"We recently moved in and are down the corner from you, and yes the front yards are very small, and the landscaping is very minimal, it's easy to clean, plain, fixup and garden these homes, especially in the front.”

The letter goes on to detail how the author’s family nominated the house as “the worst on both sides of the block”, as they tell their children “that’s where the lazy’s live.”

The letter goes on to rattle off a list of things they expect to be done to their neighbour’s house, including having the house painted, lawn mowed, weeds removed and “showing some initiative.”

The author even wonders if the residents “have absolutely no pride”, as they insist they “do something with the front of that s*** hole.”

The Reddit post welcomed a flood of comments from sympathisers, saying the author’s request is uncalled for and unfair.

While some users shared their own experiences with nightmare neighbours, many people told the recipient of the letter to simply adorn their front lawn with “plastic flamingos and lawn gnomes”.

Another thought it was a good idea, adding, "Flamingos might be too tame. I think it's time to invest in a modest display of giant lawn gnomes in raunchy poses."

Image credits: Getty Images / Reddit
