Selfish selfies: Influencers fined for posing with priceless artworks

Tourists visiting Queensland’s Carnarvon National Park have come under fire, after the wannabe influencers put an historic Indigenous site at risk with their disrespectful holiday selfies.

The park’s rock art sites are, according to senior ranger Luke Male, of international importance, and are marked as restricted access areas to prevent tourists from interfering with the “fragile” rock art.

However, “some visitors to Carnarvon National Park think the rules don’t apply to them and they’re entering restricted access areas to pose for photos.

“In some instances, they are posing in front of Indigenous rock art that is thousands of years old, or they’re actually touching it.

“The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service makes no apology for taking compliance action against people who break the rules because they believe they are influencers.”

Over the course of 12 months, six different people have been slapped with fines for entering the restricted areas to interact with the rock face - whether to take selfies or to go so far as to touch it - and 18 more fines have been issued for other offences, with camping in the protected area also landing them in trouble with park officials.

Touching the art is considered disrespectful, but isn’t the only reason visitors are asked to keep their distance, as touch can also wear down the work. The likes of sunscreen, perspiration, and hand sanitiser can cause further damage, while dust stirred from people walking through the space can adhere to the rock face.

As Male explained of the situation, “the ochre stencil art of the region is unique, diverse, highly complex and spectacular, and the rock art is embedded within sandstone that is incredibly fragile.

“It is a great honour and privilege for us to be able to see these rock art sites, and touching them can damage cultural artefacts that are thousands of years old.”

He also shared that the park rangers regularly received “information, including photos from members of the public about people who have broken the rules.

“People have to understand that the Traditional Owners remain connected to this place and the rock art within it, and they regard the entire Carnarvon National Park as a cultural site.”

Carnarvon National Park Traditional Owners Management Group Committee’s Bidjara representative Leah Wyman had more to add on the importance of protecting the artworks, sharing that “our rock art bears thousand-year-old images, and they provide valuable information about the lives and cultures of our people in the past.

“They are also important spiritual and ceremonial sites to us, and it is imperative that everyone stays on the walkways to ensure that Carnarvon National Park can be visited by future generations to come.”

Another member of the committee and Bidjara woman Kristine Sloman noted that the park itself was a cemetery, and that the sites were locations where family members had been laid to rest, so “getting off the boardwalks and walking around is of the utmost disrespect, and is comparable to attending someone’s funeral and walking on their coffin.

“Many people around the world have chosen to close their sacred sites due to destructive impacts, and it would be a great shame to resort to this type of action.

“Let’s appreciate, learn, nurture, and respect each other’s cultures and ensure no more of our sacred places are damaged or closed to the public.”

Images: Department of Environment and Science

Halle Berry's priceless response to troll over naked balcony pic

If you’ve got it, flaunt it. And if you’re Halle Berry, do it while sipping wine and basking in the sunshine, rising above a troll or two along the way.

And that’s the exact approach the Academy Award winning actress has taken with her latest social media share, to the delight - and amusement - of fans all over.

In a picture posted to Halle’s various online accounts, the 56-year-old can be seen standing nude on a balcony with a wine glass in hand, glowing in the light from above.

Some strategic limb placement and shadow work keep the snap well within posting guidelines, though that likely wouldn’t have kept the actress from sharing her peaceful moment, with her caption reading “I do what I wanna do.”

Comments flooded in for the Catwoman star, and while some were far more appropriate than others, the general consensus was that Halle should absolutely continue to do exactly what she wanted, with the heartfelt support of her fans behind her, and many applauding her bold statement.

“Well behaved women never made history,” wrote author and wellness expert Maria Emmerich.

“The blueprint,” declared American rapper Saweetie.

“YES!!!!” gushed singer Kelly Rowland.

“I’m 61. If I looked like her, I would be way worse!” said one fan. “She looks gorgeous.”

“I just wanted to see the sunrise but this is 1000% better!” another chimed.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Halle Berry (@halleberry)

However, despite the celebration from the majority, there were still those who saw fit to spew their cruelty, with some going so far as to blame Halle’s joy in her body for any hardships in her relationships. Halle silenced them soon enough though, confirming with one fan that it had actually been her own boyfriend - singer Van Hunt - who took the picture.

And when someone took issue with Halle daring to bare all in her 50s, the star once again took the high road (to the balcony), drawing attention to the sheer absurdity of the original comment with her unique - and entirely unforgettable - comeback.

“Imagine being in your 50s still posting nudes for attention in menopause when you should be chilling with your grandkids,” wrote Halle’s hater, “ageing with dignity is no longer a thing.”

And Halle, in a move that gave the ageist comment none of the attention it was craving, merely asked of her followers, “did you guys know the heart of a shrimp is located in its head?”

The comment was never going to sit well with the actress, who has been open about her thoughts on ageing in Hollywood - and life in general - in the past, even telling AARP in 2022 that “we’re all going to get older. Our skin is going to shrivel up and we’re going to look different. I see things changing with my face and body, but I’ve never put all my eggs in that basket. I’ve always known that beauty is deeper than the physical body you’re walking around in.”

“I refuse to become someone who just tries to hold on to a youthful face and not embrace what’s most important about being beautiful - how you live your life, how you give back to others, how you connect to people, how you strengthen your mind, body, and soul and nourish yourself, how you give in a meaningful way of yourself. The most beautiful people have something radiating inside.

“Women are told that when we reach a certain number, we’re no longer valuable. I believe the opposite. Society should look at us as jewels as we get older.

“Because the older women get, the more formidable we are.”

Images: Instagram

Priceless find in Egyptian temple

Archaeologists in Egypt have discovered a historical set of artifacts at the Temple of Pharaohs of great cultural significance.

The temple, an ancient structure about 95 kilometres east of Alexandria, was used to perform religious ceremonies approximately 2,700 years ago.

The artifacts found were reportedly used in such ceremonies, and will help give researchers more insight into the complicated history of the temple.

The find was announced by the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities and was hailed as an “important discovery”.

Mustafa Waziri, secretary-general of the Supreme Council of Antiquities, shared a statement about the discovery and how it will be important for the whole country.

Among the objects found were pieces of ivory carved to resemble women carrying objects; statues of Taweret, the goddess of motherhood known as the “Great One”; incense burners crafted from faience, a kind of glazed ceramic; a piece of gold sculpted to resemble the eye of Wadjet, the goddess of Lower Egypt; and a maternity chair.

Researchers believe the artifacts were involved in ceremonies honouring Hathor, the goddess of fertility.

Experts have been led to believe that the objects may have been stashed away beneath a stack of heavy stone blocks as the Persian Empire began its conquest of Egypt.

This conquest ultimately led to the collapse of the 26th Dynasty, the last native Egyptian dynasty to rule.

Some objects are inscribed with the name of Psamtik I, who ruled as king of Egypt from 664 B.C.E. to 610 B.C.E, during the 26th Dynasty, as well as those of the kings Wahibre Ibiau, who ruled ca. 1670 B.C.E., during the 13th Dynasty, and Ahmose II, who died in 526 B.C.E. and is considered the last great king of the 26th Dynasty.

As well as the fertility artifacts, archeologists found a well that once contained holy water and was considered a sacred site.

Image credit: Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities

The cheapest cruise you can go on

There's no climbing wall or karaoke to be found. No uniforms or luxury restaurants. And there are only a handful of passengers. In other words, cargo cruises are a little bit different than your classic cruise ships.

On cargo cruises, passengers join crew members on monstrous container ships that deliver goods to ports across the globe. Aside from being a unique immersive experience, it's a way to see the world for a fraction of the cost of plane tickets or regular cruises.

Here's what you need to know before embarking on the open seas in a cargo ship.

There's a reason you probably haven't heard of cargo cruises – most travel agents don't book them. You'll need to go through an agent that specialises in cargo cruise travel or get in touch with a ship's manager.

Freighter voyages usually require months of advance planning, but they rarely have set schedules. Arrivals and departures can depend on how long it takes to load or unload cargo, how busy a port is, and weather conditions. Sometimes, a departure window is given instead of an exact date. Bottom line: flexibility is a must.

It’s cheaper (and cooler) than flying

Cargo cruises cost as little as $65 a day, but most people are looking at between $160 and $190 a day. This fee includes lodging, three meals a day, and taxes. Voyages usually last between 40 and 50 days, but some people opt for segmented trips that last a few weeks, leaving on a boat, disembarking at a port, and returning home by plane.

It’s not a luxury liner, but it’s pretty great

Cargo ships are utilitarian boats. They don't have stabilisers, but with a big enough ship and a heavy enough load of cargo, you won't feel the waves. There are also lots of stairs, so hold on to the railings and wear sturdy shoes.

The accommodations are spacious and comfortable, as nice as those on regular cruise ships. And since container ships don't take more than a dozen passengers, there's plenty of room to spread out.

You’ll have to keep yourself entertained

The crew is there to work, not entertain, but everyone on the ship eats meals together, which gives you plenty of great opportunities to chat. There's no wifi, and phone access is limited to a ship's single satellite phone, so make sure you come equipped with plenty of books, games, writing materials, knitting projects, or whatever will keep you occupied. There will also be gorgeous views of sunrises, sunsets, and constellations to marvel at.

Most ships also feature a rec room, bar, and swimming pool. Some even have a sauna and a gym.

Is travelling on a container ship for you? If you've got a flexible schedule and a sense of adventure, go for it.

Have you or someone you know ever travelled on a cargo cruise? We’d love to hear your experience. Tell us all about it in the comments below.

Written by Talia Lakritz. Grandmas reaction after trying whisky for first time is priceless

From totally out there to just a little bit posh, this group of groovy grandmas taste buds are put to the test after they try Fireball whisky for the first time ever and they're reactions are priceless.

The drink is so hot it even makes one woman in particular want to go out and boogie after a few sips.

The video features four grandmas ready to try something new. Initially they have a conversation amongst each other and provide an insight into their pasts. One lady suggests she was quite the “party animal” after she discusses a wild party she had during the Olympics. "I like parties, I like parties. I'm into a lot of exciting parties," she says.

They finally take the shots and their responses are fantastic. One says, "It kinda tastes like a medicine type thing." Another says, "I could get used to this." The most crucial element of all is their priceless facial expressions.

Fireball whiskey is a Canadian based whiskey that is strongly flavoured with cinnamon. The aromatic spice has long been used as a seasoning and flavour additive for foods and drinks.

Did you know: The Romans added cinnamon to bitter wines to make them taste better.

Related links:

The funniest things grandkids kids say

The many things grandparents sacrifice for their family

15 unlikely friendships that will melt your heart
