From crumbling rock art to exposed ancestral remains, climate change is ravaging our precious Indigenous heritage

Climate change is rapidly intensifying. Amid the chaos and damage it wreaks, many precious Indigenous heritage sites in Australia and around the world are being destroyed at an alarming rate.

Sea-level rise, flooding, worsening bushfires and other human-caused climate events put many archaeological and heritage sites at risk. Already, culturally significant Indigenous sites have been lost or are gravely threatened.

For example, in Northern Australia, rock art tens of thousands of years old has been destroyed by cyclones, bushfires and other extreme weather events.

And as we outline below, ancestral remains in the Torres Strait were last year almost washed away by king tides and storm surge.

These examples of loss are just the beginning, unless we act. By combining Indigenous Traditional Knowledge with Western scientific approaches, communities can prioritise what heritage to save.

Indigenous heritage on the brink

Indigenous Australians are one of the longest living cultures on Earth. They have maintained their cultural and sacred sites for millennia.

In July, Traditional Owners from across Australia attended a workshop on disaster risk management at Flinders University. The participants, who work on Country as cultural heritage managers and rangers, hailed from as far afield as the Torres Strait Islands and Tasmania.

Here, three of these Traditional Owners describe cultural heritage losses they’ve witnessed, or fear will occur in the near future.

- Enid Tom, Kaurareg Elder and a director of Kaurareg Native Title Aboriginal Corporation:

Coastal erosion and seawater inundation have long threatened the Torres Strait. But now efforts to deal with the problem have taken on new urgency.

In February last year, king tides and a storm surge eroded parts of a beach on Muralug (or Prince of Wales) Island. Aboriginal custodians and archaeologists rushed to one site where a female ancestor was buried. They excavated the skeletal remains and reburied them at a safe location.

It was the first time such a site had been excavated at the island. Kaurareg Elders now worry coastal erosion will uncover and potentially destroy more burial sites.

- Marcus Lacey, Senior Gumurr Marthakal Indigenous Ranger:

The Marthakal Indigenous Protected Area covers remote islands and coastal mainland areas in the Northern Territory’s North Eastern Arnhem Land. It has an average elevation of just one metre above sea level, and is highly vulnerable to climate change-related hazards such as severe tropical cyclones and sea level rise.

The area is the last remnant of the ancient land bridge joining Australia with Southeast Asia. As such, it can provide valuable information about the first colonisation of Australia by First Nations people.

It is also an important place for understanding contact history between Aboriginal Australians and the Indonesian Maccassans, dating back some 400 years.

What’s more, the area provides insights into Australia’s colonial history, such as Indigenous rock art depicting the ships of British navigator Matthew Flinders. Sea level rise and king tides mean this valuable piece of Australia’s history is now being eroded.

- Shawnee Gorringe, operations administrator at Mithaka Aboriginal Corporation:

On Mithaka land, in remote Queensland, lie important Indigenous heritage sites such as stone circles, fireplaces and examples of traditional First Nations water management infrastructure.

But repeated drought risks destroying these sites – a threat compounded by erosion from over-grazing.

To help solve these issues, we desperately need Indigenous leadership and participation in decision-making at local, state and federal levels. This is the only way to achieve a sustainable future for environmental and heritage protection.

Mithaka Aboriginal Corporation general manager Joshua Gorringe has been invited to the United Nations’ COP27 climate conference in Egypt in November. This is a step in the right direction.

So what now?

The loss of Indigenous heritage to climate change requires immediate action. This should involve rigorous assessment of threatened sites, prioritising those most at risk, and taking steps to mitigate damage.

This work should be undertaken not only by scientists, engineers and heritage workers, but first and foremost by the Indigenous communities themselves, using Traditional Knowledge.

Last year’s COP26 global climate conference included a climate heritage agenda. This allowed global Indigenous voices to be heard. But unfortunately, Indigenous heritage is often excluded from discussions about climate change.

Addressing this requires doing away with the usual “top down” Western, neo-colonial approach which many Indigenous communities see as exclusive and ineffective. Instead, a “bottom up” approach should be adopted through inclusive and long-term initiatives such as Caring for Country.

This approach should draw on Indigenous knowledge – often passed down orally – of how to manage risk. This should be combined with Western climate science, as well as the expertise of governments and other organisations.

Incorporating Indigenous knowledge into cultural heritage policies and procedures will not just improve heritage protection. It would empower Indigenous communities in the face of the growing climate emergency.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

Image: Shutterstock

"Life is precious": Scott Morrison in tears over Aged Care reform

Prime Minister Scott Morrison appeared to get emotional while addressing the report on the Royal Commission into Aged Care Quality and Safety.

With 147 recommendations made to fix the broken sector, Mr Morrison tearfully committed at least $452 million in funding.

“Life is to be lived every single second, every single minute. It is precious. This is something I have believed my entire life, life is precious,” he told reporters from Kirribilli House.

“You don’t wait it out. And the fact that Australians feel they are waiting out their life, it’s impossible to put into words how you respond to that.”

"So generational change is needed. I thank the commissioners because they're honest because they know there are no easy fixes."

The report was over 200 pages long, Health Minister Greg Hunt said when it was released.

He went on to say the Aged Care Act of 1997 would be torn up, telling reporters: “That will be a significant process but it’s based on a simple concept of respect for the individual, instead of being about providers, instead of it being about money.”

The half a billion dollar funding package will aim to tackle five key areas head on within the aged care sector: Home care, residential aged care quality and safety, residential aged care services and sustainability, workforce and governance.

The Prime Minister said the future of aged care will not be in retirement homes, but in managed care within somebody's home.

"The future, substantively, overwhelmingly, particularly over time, will not be in facilities. They'll be in people's homes. And there will be a range of supports that are provided," Mr Morrison said.

"Not unlike how you see individual care packages developed for people under the NDIS."

Sydney grandmother furious after precious ring goes missing in jewellery store

A woman is demanding answers after she sent her prized engagement ring to one of Australia’s largest jewellers, only to discover it went missing.

Rosa Minichini says her husband Joe proposed on their first date – when she was 17 and he was 23.

The pair actually broke family tradition to get her engagement ring.

"So back in those days, the parents had to come along to choose the rings and I wasn't going to have that. So I said okay, when can you get time off work? We'll catch the ferry across to the city to Diamond Traders and we'll choose a ring, and that's what we did," Joe said.

Rosa explained that her ring was “a little cluster. Ten diamonds but one in the centre. And it just had little ones down, down the side of it but 18k gold."

After decades of sporting the gorgeous jewel around, a diamond fell out, and so Rosa took her engagement ring to Angus and Coote at their local shopping centre, Warringah Mall, on Sydney's northern beaches, to get it repaired.

"We got a call to go in and, you know, pick it up," Rosa said.

"As soon as he opened that bag, and it was missing, I just went into shock."

That shock was amplified because her wedding rings were the only jewellery she had left after the Minichini's were robbed seven years ago.

"They took everything of my parents', mine, my wife's, my children's necklaces, bracelets, watches, everything. Everything was gone, because everything was in the safe," Joe shared.

"You know, with the heartache of just having everything taken away, I just couldn't believe that this precious engagement ring would be taken away," Rosa explained.

Rosa said she was shown a photograph of the repaired ring, but what happened on the way back to the Angus and Coote store is a mystery.

"I can't see how it's so hard to find, because all diamond places, jewellers, they've got cameras. Surely, from one place to another, the camera can tell where it's gone," Joe admitted.

The ring cost $1100 back in 1980, when Joe earned $80 a week, petrol was 40 cents a litre, and a home in Sydney cost $50,000.

But the ring hasn't been valued since.

"I can't even put a price onto it because of the fact that the sentimental value to me, it's worth more than a million dollars," Rosa said.

Angus and Coote is one of Australia's largest jewellers with stores around the country.

The company is yet to give an explanation as to where Rosa’s ring went missing, almost seven months later since it was first entrusted to them.

The jewellery store has offered to make a replica of the engagement ring.

Angus and Coote told A Current Affair "as this is a private matter we will not be making any public comment."

Rosa says that answer is just not good enough.

“It shouldn't go missing, you know, the thing is that you've got this in your hands. It should be really looked after.”

Andrew Gavrielatos from the NSW Fair Trading's customer service department has the following advice for customers.

"Everyone places a value on their items, and they do expect to be compensated for that,” he said.

Certainly a consumer should expect to be put into that place before the item was handed over. Where there is a sentimental value, obviously that becomes a lot more difficult, because what is that value? It's much harder to determine.”

"When you do hand an item over make sure you have a photograph of the item, make sure you get a receipt, for the item you've handed over and tell the business it does have that sentimental value, to keep them focused on that."

Turia Pitt thanks supporters for giving her their most “precious resource”

Turia Pitt has taken to her social media with a following of over 800,000 people to express her incredible gratitude.

The mother of one, who is currently pregnant with her second baby, has shared a sweet message to her legion of supporters.

The message started with a story of the first time she ever shared her harrowing story with a massive audience.

Pitt says she was “humiliated” by the experience and rushed through her story, mumbled a “thank you” and left the audience confused.

“The speech organisers were awkwardly trying to reassure me that it was OK, while figuring out how to fill the remaining 30 minutes of the time booked for me,” she said.

“I remember thinking ‘You’ve totally humiliated yourself. Why did you think you could do this? Everyone feels embarrassed for you’.”

The motivational speaker and author wrote despite feeling still having major nerves, she is much better at speaking to crowds on stage.

“I’ve just learnt a really simple way of managing them: I trade my expectations for appreciation. I stop thinking about what is expected of me. Because it’s not actually about me,” she continued.

“Instead, I remind myself that the audience has literally given me their most precious resource: time.”

“If I’m speaking in front of 1,000 people, I think of what could be achieved in those 1,000 hours. And when I look at it that way, it makes me so grateful.”

Turia and her husband Michael, who share one-year-old son Hakavai, announced they were expecting their second bundle of joy, in a “Beyoncé-inspired video montage” in August.

When Michael and I want to share some big news, I insist on creating a Beyoncé-inspired video montage. Baby #2, we can't wait to meet you,” Turia captioned the gorgeous clip.

“PS I promise we'll find you a more appropriate name soon.”

Precious moment baby with Down syndrome dances to sister’s song

A mum has shared a heart-warming video of her son with Down syndrome singing and dancing to his sister performing "You Are My Sunshine".

In the precious video, two-year-old Bo is singing a duet with his 11-year-old sister Lydia as she plays the guitar.

His mum, Amanda Gray, stumbled upon the sweet moment as she came out of the shower.

Next to the video, Amanda wrote, “My daughter Lydia was watching Bo while I was in the shower. Came out to this.

"If she didn’t have a guitar I don’t know if she would know how to babysit him. This is her go to. It’s proof that music therapy works. Bo is 25 months old and has a 12 word vocabulary. Every word he has learned has been through music and singing."

The family strongly believe in music therapy being able to assist anyone struggling mentally or physically.

The proud mum-of-five wrote on her Facebook, “We were told awhile back that our lil caboose Bo would inspire and teach the world someday.

“At that time I don't think Caleb and I could comprehend or even imagine it to this extent. He is a blessing. He has brought a sweet spirit into our home and a little piece of heaven. He has changed our lives and humbled us beyond measure.

"My older children along with us are changed forever because of him.

"All he knows is how to LOVE. Simply LOVE unconditionally.

"What more could parents ask for? To EVERYONE who has viewed, commented, shared, and messaged us personally...THANK YOU.

"Thank you for seeing the beauty of this video as it bring awareness to Down Syndrome but also that music Therapy ROCKS!"

Little Bo’s life has been filled with various challenges and at the tender age of two he has already had heart surgery, taking months to recover.

Amanda and her husband Caleb, who are both musicians, believed music could help and sang "You Are My Sunshine" to him continually.

"He was so heavily sedated and wouldn't respond," she wrote on Facebook.

“From then on this has become his theme song. We are firm believers in music therapy!

"By the way the blessing that has come out of this besides the fact that he survived after crashing in the CICU was that he is on two international studies for life because he should’ve never survived what his little body had gone through.

"He mind boggled our doctors and surgeons as they had to reach out internationally for help and in the end ended up trying their own solution which is why he is here with us today!

"He also broke a record timing for Primary Children’s Hospital in 40 years for response to put someone on ECMO bypass! He seriously is our little miracle."

Hidden treasures: the art of “safely” storing precious items

Over60 community member and regular contributor, Sandra Ludinski, shares her story about losing and finding treasured items.

As we were about to leave for a recent holiday, I decided to hide my Pandora jewellery in one of those “safe places” that turned out to be so safe that even I couldn’t find it when I returned home. Six months later I found my jewellery, purely by accident, but was so relieved as I’d spent months trying to remember where I’d put it. Doesn’t everybody hide their valuables in a board game?

For some time now my Mum has been telling me I’m getting more and more like my grandmother, who stashed her valuables and money away in the pockets of most garments hanging in her wardrobe. When Grandma passed away, care had to be taken with sorting out her clothes as you never quite knew where the next lump sum would turn up! I don't know how much money Mum found, but suffice to say it was a considerable amount – all concealed in many items of clothing.

One of my grandfathers had no time for the banks, in fact he didn't trust them at all. They weren't getting hold of his hard-earned cash. He filled old Golden Syrup tins with his money and then buried them in the backyard. I often wonder how many of those tins are still buried and whether, in fact, any of them were ever freed from their underground hiding place.

Related link: 15 things kids of today are missing out on

I also recall being on holidays with my grandparents at Currumbin Beach on the Gold Coast when they were broken into. Grandma had hidden their holiday spending money in the freezer and it was gone. Only recently I was reading that the freezer is one of the first places robbers check for money and valuables, so let’s all cross that one off our list!

In my time working in aged care I heard several stories about elderly people secreting away their savings in places they deemed safe. There was certainly a lot of distrust and suspicion surrounding banks in their younger days.

One lady told me that she knew her husband was squirreling money away somewhere in the house but couldn’t figure out where. One day she walked into his study unannounced. On seeing her, the husband quickly jumped to his feet, closed the book on his desk and hurriedly placed it in his bookcase. His wife had noticed that it was his diary that he'd quickly returned to the shelves so one day when he was out, she went to the bookcase, thinking that she’d found his money stash. Not only did she find his recent diary, but diaries dating back 20 years. Imagine the surprise she got when she opened each diary to find love letters from another woman, the oldest dated 20 years ago and the most recent only three months old. Now that’s what happens when you open Pandora’s box. I'll bet he was wishing it had indeed been money she’d found.

Another lady told me she kept her savings in a brown paper bag, taped to the inside of her Alsatian’s kennel roof. Even if a robber thought to look there, they’d have to be either brave or foolish to go looking. Mind you, she’s lucky her dog didn’t eat the money. One elderly gent confided that he had kept his small emergency stash under his dog's food dish – not a bad spot, either.

There were several people who said that they’d picked the favourite tree in their garden and dug holes under it to hold their money. In fact, one family member told me that his Dad’s favourite saying was, “Do you think I’ve got a money tree growing in the backyard?” When his father’s will was read, he was told just where to find the money tree and was pleasantly surprised to find a sizable amount of money buried around it's roots!

Of course there were those who hid their savings in more obvious spots like toilet cisterns, curtain hems, hollow table legs, under furniture and in rolled up socks. But my favourite story came from a very sweet man who said he would never forget where he buried his money. His wife’s favourite flower was the daffodil. In memory of his wife he had made a garden bed in which he only ever planted daffodil bulbs, which flowered around the time of her birthday. With a twinkle in his eyes and a cheeky wink, he told me he’d put a lot of money into getting that garden looking so nice!

Without mentioning names, do you know anyone who hides their money around the home rather than depositing it in a bank? Can you tell us where they stash it?

Related links:

My 60th birthday was magical because…

The best way to preserve photos and documents

A beginner’s guide to starting a family tree
