Thank you for all the kind wishes today,” the couple wrote on social media.

In the picture, taken by the Princess of Wales, the young royal donned a plaid shirt with blue pants and was smiling at the camera.

Eagle-eyed royal watchers noticed one sweet detail in the photo: Prince Louis appears to have had a visit from the tooth fairy, as one of his bottom front-teeth was missing.

“Thank you so much for sharing this delightful picture. I see the tooth fairy has been visiting - goodness time flies so fast,” one fan wrote on X.

"Happy birthday Prince Louis!! "Tears started rolling": First glimpse of Molly the magpie shared by carers

The first photo of Molly the magpie has been released by his carers, 43 days after he was removed from his adoptive family's home.

In March, Molly's adoptive family from Queensland were forced to surrender the bird after complaints that his owners don't hold a wildlife permit.

Molly the magpie has lived with Juliette Wells and Reece Mortensen and their two dogs Peggy and Ruby since 2020, when he - originally thought to be a she - fell out a nest in their backyard.

Ever since the family were forced to hand over the magpie, Premier Steven Miles said the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation was working to help them secure the permits needed to bring Molly back home.

While the permit application is in the works, the carers at the facility where Molly is currently being held have released a photo of the bird to ease the minds of his adoptive family.

Wells and Mortensen shared the photo to their Instagram, saying, “We have our first photo!”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Peggyandmolly (@peggyandmolly)

"This photo was taken by the carers of Molly (wherever he is) and sent us yesterday. "Height of selfishness": Photo at iconic beach sparks debate over etiquette

A photo taken at Bronte Beach has sparked the age old debate over whether picnickers should be allowed to reserve picnic tables by dumping their stuff on them.

The image taken at one of Sydney's most popular beaches, showed two picnic tables under the same hut with table clothes and bags on them, but there was no human in sight.

“There were at least half a dozen of these tables ‘reserved’ for a couple of hours on Sunday morning from very early in the day,” one annoyed beachgoer wrote on Reddit.

“We got there at 7am and left a few hours later. No one was using the tables the entire time we were there.”

The post has received hundreds of comments from other annoyed picnickers, with one going as far as calling it "unAustralian".

“It's not acceptable,” one person said. “You can reserve it by sitting there yourself, but not by leaving an item.”

“Yes, you should be actually using it, not leaving your s**t on there to reserve it for later,” another added.

“It's the height of selfishness.”

“Move their stuff, move yourself in, and say, ‘it was like this when I got here’,” one commenter suggested.

“All I see is a free tablecloth and free bag,” another quipped.

However, a few others pointed out that there were other available seats, and that there are unspoken rules around reserving picnic spots.

"In this instance, it’s probably okay,” one wrote. “The back table is free, go grab it.”

"As long as there’s people there minding the tables, not just throwing a bunch of tablecloths down and walking off, I’m fine with it,” another added. “First come first served.”

“If I was bringing a few things from the car I might do this,” a third commented.

“Like dropping off the tablecloth and backpack before grabbing the esky etc. But I'd maintain line of sight. Anything else isn't justified in my opinion.”

A spokesperson for Waverly Council have asked people to "refrain from reserving tables and always have a back up plan".

“Waverley is the second-most densely populated local government area in Australia outside of the City of Sydney, and we attract millions of visitors every year, so our recreational spaces are at a premium," the spokesperson told Yahoo News Australia.

“On weekends and at other peak times, picnic tables and barbecues do invariably fill up. So we ask people to share our spaces so that everyone can have a turn.”

Images: Reddit

Peter Overton's adorable photo recreation with his daughters

In the whirlwind world of jet-setting journalists, where passport stamps act as badges of honour, it's easy to become a connoisseur of the globe. Peter Overton, the esteemed newsreader (and now, it would seem, traveller extraordinaire!) knows this all too well.

With a career spanning nearly a decade at 60 Minutes, he's seen more corners of the earth than your average compass. From the bustling streets of New York to the serene landscapes of Namibia, his adventures have been the stuff of envy for many.

But hold onto your boarding passes, folks, because Overton recently embarked on a journey of a different kind – one that involved less hard-hitting reporting and more ice skating in Central Park. Yes, you guessed it; he took a trip with his two teenage daughters, Allegra and Giselle, and wife, TV host Jessica Rowe! And yes indeed, it was a whirlwind of teenage thrills and dad jokes.

Their escapade took them to the illustrious cities of New York, London and Paris – a trifecta of cultural richness and Instagram-worthy moments. While Overton might have thought he had seen it all, experiencing these iconic cities through the eyes of his daughters brought a whole new dimension to his travels. Forget about uncovering hard-hitting news stories; the real scoop was watching his daughters' faces light up as they devoured their first New York slice or twirled around on the ice in Central Park.

As Overton told 9Travel, "Every day was a highlight because every day the kids realised what a thrill this was, and they thanked us every day, which just made it so worthwhile." Ah, the joys of teenage gratitude!

Now, you might think that being a household name would automatically mean flying first class and staying in penthouse suites. But fear not, frugal travellers, because the Overton-Rowe clan knows how to stretch a dollar. Opting for apartments over hotel rooms, they were able to enjoy the comforts of home away from home without breaking the bank. (Take note, budget-conscious travellers, because this is how you do luxury on a shoestring budget.)

And let's not forget about dear old dad's role in all of this. While Jessica handles the packing (because let's face it, dads and folding clothes don't exactly mix), it's Overton who takes the reins when it comes to trip planning and booking. "I'm useless," he confesses with a chuckle. But hey, at least he's honest about it.

But the adventure didn't stop at the bright lights of the big cities; they even made a pit stop in Winchester, England, where Overton himself was born. Talk about a blast from the past – in an adorable Overton moment, they recreated a family photo at the village sign, proving that no matter how far you roam, there's always a piece of home to hold onto.

As for future travels, Overton has his sights set on exploring more of his home turf in Australia. Forget luxury train rides in Europe; he's all about road tripping through the Riverina with his girls. And who can blame him? With its picturesque landscapes and charming towns, it's the perfect backdrop for some good old-fashioned family bonding.

So, here's to Peter Overton, the intrepid newsreader turned family travel guru. May your adventures continue to be filled with teenage thrills, dad jokes and plenty of passport stamps. And remember, no matter where life takes you, there's always room for one more family photo by the village sign.

Images: 9Travel

Pilot captures once in a lifetime photo of the Northern Lights

A pilot has captured the breathtaking moment he flew beside the Northern Lights while manning a cargo plane.

Christiaan van Heijst, a pilot and photographer, shared the incredible image to Instagram, which shows the "turquoise aerial fire" appear in the form of the aurora borealis.

Beneath the sea of twirling green lights, the city lights of Reykjavik, the capital of Iceland, illuminated the horizon in a contrasting orange glow far away.

The extraordinary photo has racked up thousands of likes in just a few days, as Captain van Heijst shared the entertaining story of his flight and the moment he captured the picture in the caption.

“Artificial lights on the horizon: a beacon of civilisation and connectedness to the world after many hours of isolation: no communication in my headset except for the bare minimums in regard to procedures, nor any personal interaction from my Icelandic captain, who’s been mute ever since the landing gear went up on the other side of the planet,” he explained in the post.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; Yes, Kate Middleton’s photo was doctored. But so are a lot of images we see today

The princess later apologised for any confusion and said she had “experimented with editing” as many amateur photographers do.

Image editing is extremely common these days, and not all of it is for nefarious purposes. However, in an age of rampant misinformation, how can we stay vigilant around suspicious images?

What happened with the royal photo?

A close look reveals at least eight inconsistencies with the image.

Two of these relate to unnatural blur. Catherine’s right hand is unnaturally blurred, even though her left hand is sharp and at the same distance from the camera. The left side of Catherine’s hair is also unnaturally blurred, while the right side of her hair is sharp.

These types of edits are usually made with a blur tool that softens pixels. It is often used to make the background of an image less distracting or to smooth rough patches of texture.

At least eight logical inconsistencies exist in the doctored image the Prince and Princess of Wales posted on social media. Photo by the Prince of Wales/Chart by T.J. This is a Photoshop tool that takes part of the same or a different image and “stamps” it onto another part.

You can see this with the repeated pattern on Louis’s (on the left) sweater and the tile on the ground. You can also see it with the step behind Louis’s legs and on Charlotte’s hair and sleeve. The zipper on Catherine’s jacket also doesn’t line up.

The most charitable interpretation is that the princess was trying to remove distracting or unflattering elements. But the artefacts could also point to multiple images being blended together. This could either be to try to show the best version of each person (for example, with a smiling face and open eyes), or for another purpose.

Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing. Point your iPhone or equivalent at a beautiful sunset and watch it capture the scene from the brightest highlights to the darkest shadows. What happens here is your camera makes multiple images and automatically stitches them together to make an image with a wider range of contrast.

While face-smoothing or teeth-whitening filters are nothing new, some smartphone camera apps apply them without being prompted. Newer technology like Google’s “Best Take” feature can even combine the best attributes of multiple images to ensure everyone’s eyes are open and faces are smiling in group shots.

On social media, it seems everyone tries to show themselves in their best light, which is partially why so few of the photos on our camera rolls make it onto our social media feeds. It is also why we often edit our photos to show our best sides.

But in other contexts, such as press photography, the rules are much stricter. The Associated Press, for example, bans all edits beyond simple crops, colour adjustments, and “minor adjustments” that “restore the authentic nature of the photograph”.

Professional photojournalists haven’t always gotten it right, though. While the majority of lens-based news workers adhere to ethical guidelines like those published by the National Press Photographers Association, others have let deadline pressures, competition and the desire for exceptional imagery cloud their judgement.

One such example was in 2017, when British photojournalist Souvid Datta admitted to visually plagiarising another photographer’s work within his own composition.

Photographer Souvid Datta appears to have plagiarized Mary Ellen Mark: https://t.co/iO1Lm8CowU pic.twitter.com/jswHyApGNj

— PetaPixel (@petapixel) May 3, 2017

Concerns around false or misleading visual information are at an all-time high, given advances in generative artificial intelligence (AI). In fact, this year the World Economic Forum named the risk of misinformation and disinformation as the world’s greatest short-term threat. It placed this above armed conflict and natural disasters.

What to do if you’re unsure about an image you’ve found online

It can be hard to keep up with the more than 3 billion photos that are shared each day.

But, for the ones that matter, we owe it to ourselves to slow down, zoom in and ask ourselves a few simple questions:

1. Who made or shared the image? This can give clues about reliability and the purpose of making or sharing the image.

2. What’s the evidence? Princess Kate sensationally speaks out over photo fiasco

Kensington Palace's attempt to quell speculation about Kate Middleton's health has ignited a storm of controversy, raising concerns about the future Queen's well-being to feverish levels.

The Princess of Wales, at 42, issued an unprecedented statement on Monday morning, UK time, taking responsibility for what was described as "editing" an official portrait released on Sunday for Mother’s Day.

This portrait, featuring Kate alongside her three children – Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis – was eagerly anticipated as it marked the first sighting of the Princess since her mysterious abdominal surgery in January and subsequent disappearance from the public eye.

However, far from dispelling concerns, the photograph seemed to amplify existing suspicions about her health, with many pointing out apparent discrepancies and suggesting it had been manipulated. The situation escalated when four major photo agencies issued "kill notice" orders for the image, alleging it had been "manipulated at the source [palace]."

In a rare move, Kate Middleton took to X (Twitter) to address the controversy directly, admitting to the editing mishap and expressing regret for any confusion caused by the altered image.

"Like many amateur photographers, I do occasionally experiment with editing," she wrote. "I wanted to express my apologies for any confusion the family photograph we shared yesterday caused. I hope everyone celebrating had a very happy Mother's Day. C"

Despite her efforts to diffuse the situation, the fallout continued to unravel. Royal watchers and fans reacted strongly to the events, with some accusing the palace of using Kate as a scapegoat and questioning the integrity of the institution itself. Omid Scobie, a UK author known for his association with Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, highlighted the palace's history of misinformation and suggested that regaining public trust would be an uphill battle.

“It’s fair to say that most photos released by the offices of public figures have been retouched in some way, so *if* this was an isolated incident then it would just be an unfortunate error," Scobie wrote.

"But with the Palace’s long history of lying, covering up, and even issuing statements on behalf of family members without their permission (cc: Prince Harry), it’s becoming increasingly difficult for the public to believe a word (and now photo) they share. Gaining that back at this point is an almost impossible task.”

Piers Morgan strongly urged the palace to release the unedited version of the photo to quell speculation. Failure to do so, he warned, would only fuel further conspiracy theories.

As the debate raged on social media, with Kate Middleton's name trending worldwide, users dissected the image, pointing out inconsistencies and suggesting alternative theories. The withdrawal of the photo by major news agencies, citing editorial issues, have only added fuel to the fire, further intensifying speculation.

Amidst the controversy, Princess Kate's prolonged absence from the public eye following her hospitalisation in January has only heightened concerns. Her recent appearance, photographed near Windsor Castle, marked her first public sighting in over two months, adding to the intrigue surrounding her health.

As the debate continues, the fallout from this incident may have lasting implications for both Kate Middleton and the institution she represents.

Image: Instagram

Elite school teacher blackmailed for naked photos by student

A teacher at an elite boys' school has opened up about her experience in the "toxic boys' club" that led to her being threatened by a student.

Jasmin Hyde was a maths teacher at the elite Cranbrook School in Sydney's Bellevue Hill when she was blackmailed by one of her students in June 2020, according to ABC's Four Corners.

A student at the school attempted to blackmail the female teacher, demanding she send him nude photos or he would accuse her of sexual assault.

The incident is just one of a number of claims made on Four Corners about the allegedly toxic culture at Cranbrook School, one of the country’s most prestigious institutions where tuition costs up to $46,000 per year.

The student in question was suspended and chose to leave the school for good, and later wrote an apologetic letter to Ms Hyde.

“I have caused so much hurt and disappointment to you, my teachers and the wider school community, my friends and my family,” he said in the letter.

But Ms Hyde was not happy with the school’s response, and took her complaint to the Australian Human Rights Commission.

“In my experience, Cranbrook did not have a safe, inclusive and supportive culture for me and its female teaching staff,” she told the commission in October 2023.

“That must change. It must change for my sake, and it must change for the sake of your current and future teaching staff, and the many young girls who are about to embark on their studies at Cranbrook.”

According to Ms Hyde, she was taken to a cafe by the headmaster and his deputy after she made the claims against the student, to which the deputy head of school suggested it was no surprise she received attention from the boys because she was good-looking.

“Justifying sexual harassment empowers future abuse,” she told the commission.

“This is the standard that Cranbrook management condones, the tone from the top — that young, attractive women at your school should not only expect but tolerate sexual harassment. I wonder how the parents of your future female students would feel about this.”

Cranbrook reportedly apologised, saying in a statement the deputy never intended to offend and was “sorry if [he] has done so”.

In the hours after the Four Corners program aired, Cranbrook School Council issued a statement saying it was “concerned by the allegations raised” in the program but “remains fully supportive of the headmaster and the school’s leadership”.

“Cranbrook takes all allegations of abuse, and its duty of care to its students, extremely seriously and follows relevant and mandatory reporting processes in relation to these matters,” Cranbrook School Council president Geoff Lovell said.

“We acknowledge survivors and their stories. No school is ever exempt from scrutiny or, where deserved, criticism. We offer sympathy to the grievances aired by former staff.”

Leaker of gruesome shark attack photo revealed

The New South Wales Ambulance Service is facing criticism and backlash after a staff member leaked a graphic image of the wounded leg of Sydney shark attack victim Lauren O'Neill.

The incident occurred after O'Neill fell victim to a bull shark attack in Sydney Harbour, just metres away from her residence. This breach of privacy has not only added to the distress of O'Neill and her loved ones but has raised serious concerns about the protection of patient confidentiality.

The graphic image, taken inside the emergency room as medical professionals worked to stabilise O'Neill, was shared online by a member of the NSW Ambulance staff. This action not only violates the fundamental principle of patient privacy but also calls into question the ethical conduct expected from healthcare professionals in such sensitive situations.

NSW Ambulance issued a public apology, acknowledging the breach of privacy and expressing sincere regret for the additional distress caused to O'Neill and her family.

The statement also revealed that discussions with O'Neill's family led them to believe that a NSW Ambulance staff member was responsible for the privacy breach.

“NSW Ambulance sincerely apologises to Ms O’Neill for the breach of her privacy and the additional distress it has caused her and her loved ones at this most difficult time,” a spokesperson said. “We spoke with Ms O’Neill’s family this afternoon and informed them that we believe a NSW Ambulance staff member was responsible for the breach of her privacy.

“NSW Ambulance takes its patient privacy obligations very seriously and is continuing to investigate this breach to determine the full details of the incident.”

St Vincent's Hospital, where Ms. O'Neill was taken for urgent medical attention, has launched its own investigation into the matter, along with the involvement of NSW Police. The gravity of the situation is underscored by the fact that O'Neill's right leg was in jeopardy, and the medical teams worked tirelessly to save it.

O'Neill, a microbiologist, has expressed her gratitude to the heroic neighbours, to NSW Ambulance paramedics, Kings Cross Police and the surgical teams at St Vincent's Hospital for their swift and caring actions. However, the unfortunate leak of the graphic image has marred what should have been a focus on her recovery and gratitude towards those who aided her in the aftermath of the terrifying attack.

As O'Neill transitions from the Intensive Care Unit to a recovery ward, it is crucial for the public to reflect on the importance of patient privacy and the trust placed in healthcare professionals during moments of vulnerability. The breach has sparked outrage among the public, with many demanding accountability and stricter measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Images: Instagram

Leaked photo of Sydney shark victim sparks urgent probe

The sanctity of patient privacy has come under scrutiny at Sydney's St Vincent's Hospital following the leak of a graphic photograph depicting the treatment of shark attack victim Lauren O'Neill.

The 29-year-old suffered a serious injury after being attacked by a bull shark near a private wharf in Elizabeth Bay, sparking both a medical and privacy crisis.

The photograph in question, which we are not going to publish, shows Ms O'Neill's uncovered leg being attended to by medical staff, and has stirred concerns about the vulnerability of patient privacy in the digital age. St Vincent's Hospital has launched a comprehensive investigation into the breach, expressing deep regret and extending apologies to Ms O'Neill.

"St Vincent’s has become aware of photos in the public domain that appear to have been taken in the Emergency Department and are related to those of a patient injury," said hospital spokesperson David Faktor.

"We have sincerely apologised for any part St Vincent’s played in the photos being taken."

The investigation aims to uncover the identity of the person responsible for taking the photograph and how it ended up in the public domain. Faktor aptly described the incident as a "wake-up call", highlighting the ease with which privacy can be compromised in today's digital landscape.

Ms O'Neill, who is on track for a full recovery, expressed her gratitude to the heroic neighbours, emergency services and medical professionals who aided her. However, her appreciation comes amid the distressing breach of her privacy during a vulnerable moment.

As the investigation unfolds, it is crucial for St Vincent's Hospital to implement robust protocols and security measures to prevent future breaches and reassure the public of their commitment to patient confidentiality.

Images: Instagram

Tourist fined after posting this one photo on social media

A man has been fined after flouting the rules to get the perfect photo with a quokka at Rottnest Island.

The tourist was visiting the popular nature reserve, off the coast of Western Australia, when he was tracked down by authorities after posting a photo of him holding the marsupial on Instagram, despite signs saying not to touch the vulnerable animals.

"Feeding and touching quokkas is not permitted for the safety of visitors and the welfare of the animals," A Rottnest Island Authority spokesperson told Perth Now.

The unnamed tourist copped a $200 fine and an infringement was issued over the weekend, but the spokesperson said he was not evicted from the island.

The Rottnest Island website also clearly states the rules against touching the furry animals.

"It’s important, for their safety and yours, that you don’t touch the quokkas," the website read.

Tourists are also warned that touching the marsupials can make them sick, spread disease and cause mothers to abandon their young if they carry an unfamiliar scent.

Samuel Cornell, a research fellow from UNSW, told Yahoo News Australia that these rules exist for a reason.

"The rules are there usually to protect people's own safety, first and foremost. And then secondly, of course, we enact rules to protect the environment," Cornell said.

"They are still wild animals, but because they're plastered all over social media and people are used to seeing pretty pictures with them, I think people then have this interpretation of them that they're just some fluffy, safe creature that you can just go up to and pick up."

Cornell added that tourists flouting the rules is not just an issue in Rottnest Island, but "a problem across Australia," including popular tourists destinations like K'gari (formerly Fraser Island), Babinda boulders, and Wedding Cake Rock in Sydney.

"Some people do just ignore rules or signs because they think they know better or they really want a photo in a certain place," he explained.

"But there are a subset of people that will claim 'oh, I didn't actually see the sign or I wasn't really aware'".

Images: PerthNow/ Getty

It’s terrifying and it’s debilitating because you’re waiting for someone to snap a picture of you and make it salacious. To live like that is … oh, it’s not fun. And I’ve been doing that for a little while now. So it’s nice to say it.”
