Oscar-nominated actor shares his terrifying diagnosis

Mark Ruffalo has opened up about the moment he found out he had a brain tumour almost two decades ago, and how he broke the news to his then heavily pregnant wife, Sunrise.

Speaking with Jason Bateman, Sean Hayes and Will Arnett on the Smartless podcast on Monday, the actor revealed that he got his diagnosis after a "crazy dream".

“It’s the craziest thing. I was actually shooting The Last Castle with [James] Gandolfini and Robert Redford and I had about a week left on that," he said.

The Oscar nominee said that just before he got the diagnosis, he was supposed to be on set at 4am.

“I woke up probably around three and I just had this crazy dream, you know, it wasn’t like any other dream I ever had. It was just like, ‘You have a brain tumour.’ It wasn’t even a voice. It was just pure knowledge: ‘You have a brain tumour, and you have to deal with it immediately’,” he continued.

Despite having no symptoms other than an ear infection, the actor trusted his gut and went to the doctors anyways.

“Listen, this is going to sound crazy, but I had this dream last night that I have a brain tumour," he recalled telling the doctor.

She said: "'That is crazy, but there’s no reason you should have to worry about it. I’ll order you a CAT scan, and we’ll go right after work today, and we’ll show how crazy you are.’”

Ruffalo then went to the neurologist’s office to read the scan and was shocked to find that his dream was right.

“The nurse calls the doctor out, and I could hear them talking in the other room, and she just comes in, and she’s a zombie, and she says, ‘You have a mass behind your left ear the size of a golf ball, and we don’t know what it is. We can’t tell until it’s biopsied,’” he recalled.

The Marvel star added that he waited to tell his then nine-months pregnant wife the news simply because she was so excited to welcome their bub.

“She had the birth plan, she did the yoga, she had the doula, we had a hot tub ordered. This is like her wedding, you know, man? This is like her christening, her quinceañera, and I was just like, ‘I can’t.’"

And when finally did break the news, his wife initially thought he was joking, "and then she just burst into tears and said, ‘I always knew you were going to die young!’”

Fortunately for Ruffalo, the brain tumour turned out to be benign, but the surgery did leave him “totally” deaf in one ear.

Image: Getty

Margot Robbie snubbed as Oscar nominations announced

The nominations for the 96th academy awards has been announced, and despite Barbie being nominated for eight awards, there were a few notable snubs that fans aren't happy about.

The film’s star, Margot Robbie, was not nominated for best actress, despite co-star Ryan Gosling receiving a nomination for best supporting actor for his role as Ken.

The film's director Greta Gerwig, was also snubbed as she was not nominated for best director.

Fans took to social media to express their thoughts, with many of them unhappy with the academy's choice.

"So Ryan Gosling’s nominated for playing ken but Margot Robbie isn’t nominated for playing barbie… in barbie," one person wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.

So Ryan Gosling’s nominated for playing ken but Margot Robbie isn’t nominated for playing barbie… in barbie #Oscars

pic.twitter.com/uceB20BB8H

— poppy ☾ (@scddevereaux) January 23, 2024

"No nomination for Margot Robbie or Greta Gerwig for the #Oscars but Ryan Gosling gets one. But no Best Director nom?!" another tweeted.

One particular tweet went viral, with over 109 thousand likes.

"Ken getting nominated and not Barbie is honestly so fitting for a film about a man discovering the power of patriarchy in the Real World," the tweet read.

Ken getting nominated and not Barbie is honestly so fitting for a film about a man discovering the power of patriarchy in the Real World.

— Michael. The biggest winners and losers of the Oscar nominations

The nominees for the 95th Academy Awards were announced overnight, with fan favourites in for a shot at snagging the coveted Oscar awards.

Actors Riz Ahmed and Allison Williams made the announcements from the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.

Some nominees came as no surprise to avid film fans, while others were a shock, with some favourite apparently snubbed by the Academy.

Sci-fi comedy drama Everything Everywhere All At Once scored 11 Academy Award nominations, the most for any film in 2023, with Best Picture well within their sights.

All Quiet on the Western Front and The Banshees of Inisherin came in second with a total of 9 nominations each.

Australian actor Cate Blanchett was honoured with a chance at Best Actress for her leading performance in the psychological drama Tár. Cate is a favourite in this category, and a win would see her with three Oscar awards to her name.

In the Best Actress category, many were shocked to see Viola Davis snubbed for her work in the historical drama The Woman King. Viola had been a contender for the award all season, with recognition at the BAFTA Awards, the Golden Globe Awards, and the Screen Actors Guild Awards.

Australia’s own Baz Luhrmann missed out on a nomination for his directing work on Elvis, but the film didn’t miss out entirely, bagging nominations in eight categories, including the sought after Best Picture.

James Cameron, director of Avatar: The Way of Water, best known for directing Titanic, did not receive a nomination for Best Director either.

Catherine Martin, the most awarded Australian in the history of the Oscars with four wins to her name, received two nominations for her work on Elvis for both Costume Design and Production Design.

The nominees for Best Actor came with no surprises, though many thought Tom Cruise may feature there for his performance in Top Gun: Maverick. Hugh Jackman also missed out on a nomination in this category for his work in The Son.

Despite snubs in other categories, most films were acknowledged with multiple nominations, though perhaps not always in the areas they wanted. Fans were certain the likes of The Woman King, Babylon, and The Whale would be up for a chance at Best Picture, but each was left disappointed when the list of contenders was announced.

With six nominations, Top Gun: Maverick looks set to take home at least one award, but all eyes are on Tom Cruise and his chance for a first Academy Award win. While he wasn’t nominated for Best Actor, the film did secure itself a chance at Best Picture, with many praising the Academy for honouring a box office success.

The winners of the 95th Academy Awards will be announced on March 13 (Australian time), with comedian Jimmy Kimmel set to host the event.

Image: Getty Images

Gold Logie nominee Tom Gleeson wreaks havoc on Today show

Gold Logie nominee and comedian Tom Gleeson appeared on the Today show on Wednesday morning and caused a ruckus, much to the chagrin of the hosts.

The Hard Quiz presenter is known for not holding back and he lived up to his reputation as was interviewed by the breakfast show's hosts Deborah Knight, Georgie Gardner and Tom Steinfort about his current campaign to win this year’s Gold Logie.

Naturally, Gleeson did not disappoint as he presented the hosts with a show full to the brim with campaign merchandise. It included t-shirts with his face on it, cushions and a box of condoms with the word “hard” printed on them.

“I got them extra large for Richard [Wilkins],” Gleeson quipped as he passed the condoms to the sniggering Today hosts.

“This is reckless television!” cried Georgie Gardner as Gleeson continued to unveil the show bag goodies.

I misbehaved on @TheTodayShow this morning. #tvweeklogies #Gleeson4Gold Vote here now: https://t.co/oIgKOm3nip pic.twitter.com/tyQnlPHv3X
— Tom Gleeson (@nonstoptom) 25 June 2019

There were innuendoes everywhere as the hosts played a clip of Gleeson joking he wanted to replace the Today show with a show called Hard Day.

After playing the clip, Gardner joked, “Which is probably preferable to Soft Day.”

Steinfort chimed in with, “Depends who you ask.”

“It writes itself,” Gleeson said before pitching a slogan for the show. “Wake up hard in the morning!”

Naturally, Gleeson saved the best for last as he asked where former Today host Karl Stefanovic was.

“I need to ask a question before I go. Where is Karl? What have you done with him? When is he coming back?” he asked.

Gardner was quick on her feet and retorted, “I told you last time where he was, I ate him,” before changing the topic.

Gleeson also spoke to KIIS FM’s Kyle and Jackie O, where he maintains that he helped last year’s Gold Logie winner Grant Denyer win the award.

“Well, I did start the hashtag #Denyer4Gold,” Gleeson said, according to news.com.au. “The night before I launched my campaign I plugged it into Twitter, there were no matches. By the time the red carpet had ended there were two million. So I think it might have had an impact.

Gleeson reflected, “Think of it this way: He [Denyer] didn’t have a show on air last year and he won the Gold Logie. This year he’s had five shows on air and no support from me, wasn’t even nominated.

“I conclude that I might have had a hand in it,” he added.

Why Tom Gleeson quit as the host of Hard Quiz

Tom Gleeson, host of the popular TV show Hard Quiz, shocked everyone when he announced he was quitting as host of the show last week.

He released a statement on Twitter saying he was leaving.

“I’ve decided to step down as the host of Hard Quiz and discontinue production of the show. This was not an easy decision to make and I appreciate there are many fans of the show for which I will always be grateful,” Gleeson wrote.

“The demands of hosting a show has meant I was unable to spend as much time as I would like to performing stand up. I’ve loved making Hard Quiz and I will miss it.”

The announcement was a definite surprise to the ABC, who responded with their own statement.

“Tom’s statement that he has sacked himself from Hard Quiz is news to us, particularly as we have 10 new episodes airing later this year,” the ABC said.

However, it turns out that it was all an elaborate prank. Tom Gleeson, last year, launched a social media campaign to help Grant Denyer win the Gold Logie after Family Feud was axed.

At the time, Gleeson said: “Let’s push the Logies to its most absurd extreme ever and give the Gold Logie to a guy that doesn’t have a TV show.”

The campaign ended up working and Denyer won the Gold Logie, so it was only natural that when Gleeson was up for a Gold Logie himself, he would pull the same stunt.

🏆 We did it! 🏆 #Denyer4Gold #TVWEEKlogies pic.twitter.com/pAnIsqNsf8
— The Weekly (@theweeklytv) July 1, 2018

“Last year proved you can only win if you don’t have a show,” Gleeson wrote on Twitter, when news of the prank broke.

“That’s why I axed myself. He’s one step up from mowing a lawn, really. I host an actual show in prime time and he does an infomercial on Fridays on the ABC that doesn’t rate anywhere near mine.”

Gleeson was also well aware of where last year’s Gold Logie winner Grant Denyer’s support lied.

To win the Gold Logie you have to fight dirty. I got one text after he won Gold that said, ‘That was funny, wasn’t it!’ Well yeah, it was, but just quietly, I heard nothing else back from him and next thing I hear is that he’s getting behind Amanda Keller because apparently she deserves it.

“Nobody deserves anything except for me, I deserve justice,” he joked.

The nominees for this year’s Gold Logie have been revealed, and there are a few names that are bound to raise eyebrows up for the coveted trophy.

The ones drawing the most attention are Costa Georgiadis, who has hosted Gardening Australia since 2012 and Eve Morey from Neighbours.

Other nominees include Sam Mac from Sunrise, Amanda Keller from The Living Room, Waleed Aly from The Project, Tom Gleeson from Hard Quiz and Rodger Corser from Doctor Doctor.

View this post on Instagram

Six of our #TVWEEKLogies Gold nominees (minus Waleed Aly). Thomas Woodgate, TV WEEK Editor, explained the choices.

“While I do see why people from the outset might be surprised by Costa’s inclusion, people need to remind themselves that Gardening Australia is a heritage show,” Mr Woodgate said.

“It’s celebrating 30 years on air this year, which is quite extraordinary, and Costa is the face of that show. I can understand why people might be surprised but when you think about it, maybe it’s just the right time for the show to get the recognition it deserves.”

He also explained the choice behind Neighbours star Eve Morey.

Her character, Sonya Rebecchi, died from cancer in beloved Toadie’s arms. Woodgate said that her character’s death on the show would have “without a question” motivated fans to vote for Morey.

“The timing of the storyline was incredible,” he said. “In week one of voting, Sonya passed away so heartbreakingly on screen, so of course it played a role. And you know what, it should play a role. If we’re going to celebrate any actress or actor or host, what they do on air at the time of voting is going to play a part.”

However, the question on everyone’s lips is: Who IS going to take home the Gold Logie?

Even Woodgate doesn’t have an answer.

“Because there are some names we haven’t seen before, I think it really does throw the field quite open,” Mr Woodgate said.

“But if you want me to put a name out there that I think is the one to beat at this stage, I think Amanda Keller going back to back in the Gold Logie nominations is telling. I think she is extremely likeable, she’s got a massive radio audience and she’s also just come off a wonderful job as co-host of Dancing With The Stars, which I thought was a really nice show.

However, Woodgate is aware it’s not up to him to decide.

“I would say that Amanda is the one to beat, but I’m not the one who has to make the decision, that’s the Australian public.”

View this post on Instagram

Well.. what do you know? 8 Oscar nominations that were revoked

The Oscar awards are the most prestigious and sought after motion picture awards that the film industry offers. Since the first Academy Awards took place in 1929 at the Hollywood Roosevelt hotel, here are eight instances where the sacred nomination was revoked.

1. The Circus, 1928

At the first awards night in 1929, Charlie Chaplin had his individual awards revoked. He was nominated for Best Actor, Best Director for a Comedy, Best Writer and Outstanding Picture for his film The Circus. The Academy believed he would take home all four awards so they presented him with an Honorary Award for his writing, directing and producing in the film.

2. Hondo, 1953

Western film Hondo was nominated for Best Story in 1954. It was later discovered that the script was based off a short story called The Gift of Cochise and so the nomination was taken back as it was not an original work.

3. High Society, 1955

The film starring Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly was nominated for Best Story by writers Edward Bernds and Elwood Ulman. However, there was a mix up with films that had the same title. Bernds and Ulman wrote the Bowery Boys comedy called High Society, not the one starring Bing Crosby and Grace Kelly. The writers withdrew their names from the final ballot after the mistake made by the Academy.

4. Young Americans, 1967

Young Americans is the only film in American history to receive a Oscar and then have it revoked after the ceremony. The film won Best Documentary in 1969. However, it was soon discovered that the film played in a theatre in October 1967, disqualifying it from the 1968 movie award season. The Oscar was then awarded to runner-up Journey Into Self.

5. The Godfather, 1972

The Godfather was nominated for nine awards including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor, which Marlon Brando won. The film was also nominated for Best Original Dramatic Score by composer Nino Rota. The nomination was revoked when it was discovered that Nino used some of his score from 1958 Fortunella. Nino took home the Oscar two years later when he was nominated for his score for The Godfather: Part II.

6. A Place in the World, 1992

In 1993, Uruguay submitted A Place in the World for Best Foreign Language Film. It received one of five nominations but these were rescinded because it was actually an Argentinian film. The director had asked Uruguay to submit the film on his behalf as several artists from Uruguay worked on the film and it had some financers from the country. The director sued the Academy after the nomination was revoked.

7. Tuba Atlantic, 2010

Tuba Atlantic from Norway was nominated for Best Live Action Short Film. It was revoked once it was discovered that the film aired on Norwegian TV before its theatrical release, which goes against the Academy’s rules.

8. Alone Yet Not Alone, 2013

This film was nominated for Best Original Song but was disqualified two weeks later. The song’s composer, Bruce Broughton, who was an executive committee member of the Academy’s music branch had emailed members of the branch to make them aware of his submission. This goes against Academy rules and was believed this promotion method would have given Bruce an unfair advantage.

“I’m devastated… I indulged in the simplest grassroots campaign and it went against me when the song started getting attention. I got taken down by competition that had months of promotion and advertising behind them. I simply asked people to find the song and consider it," Bruce told The Hollywood Reporter at the time.

This 100-second-long Oscar-nominated film will blow you away

Oscars night is all about the big-name films and the glitz and glamour of those who starred in them. But it’s also a massive night for everyone behind the scenes, from sound mixing to makeup. So, let’s look back at one of the unexpected hits of recent years – Fresh Guacamole, a 2012 short film by PES (director Adam Pesapane).

At just 100 seconds long, it’s the shortest film in history to be nominated for an Oscar. And although it didn’t win, we can’t get enough of the oddly-satisfying, mouth-watering and ultra-creative short – and neither can the almost 50 million other viewers.

Take a look at the incredible film above and tell us in the comments, what film would you like to see take home the Best Picture gong this year?

Credit: PESfilm/Youtube

Related links:

Angela Lansbury joins cast of star-studded Mary Poppins sequel

Movies worth seeing in 2017

First look at behind-the-scenes photos from Love Actually sequel

What happens if I don’t nominate a beneficiary?

When you pass away, ultimately it will be up to the trustee of your super fund to determine which of your dependants will receive the remainder of your superannuation.

Because of this, it’s important to nominate beneficiaries.

Where going to look at the importance of the beneficiary process and what happens if you fail to nominate one. By understanding the way this process works, you can be sure that you will make the right financial decision for your family in the future.

How do I nominate a beneficiary?

A beneficiary is the person you have nominated to receive your super death benefit. Nominations can be binding or non-binding. Having a non-binding nomination in place will remove uncertainty, so you know exactly who will receive your money.

Any of your dependants can be nominated as a beneficiary, including the people who are financial dependent on you at the time of your passing.

What happens if I don’t nominate one?

While this varies from fund to fund, generally if you don’t make a nomination your trustee will be into contact with your executor and ask the members of your family if they would like to make a claim, and who else may be eligible to receive it.

Death benefits are generally paid in priority to surviving spouses or young children, over adult non-dependent children. If you don’t have a spouse, children or any dependents, your super death benefit will be paid straight to your estate.

What else should I consider?

While it’s a pretty grim topic to think about, it’s important to consult an adviser or lawyer to determine the tax and legal implications of your decision.
