"That is NOT a goanna": Family stumbles upon metre-long croc in their chicken coop

A Central Queensland family got the croc-shock of their lives when what they thought was a seemingly innocent goanna having a nap in their chicken coop turned out to be a rather laid-back, metre-long reptile houseguest.

The unsuspecting family from Cape Hillsborough stumbled upon the scaly interloper during their morning routine and, upon closer inspection, they realised that their "goanna" was actually a pint-sized crocodile with a hunger for adventure and perhaps a penchant for farm-fresh eggs.

They immediately called upon the services of the wildlife officers from the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation (DESI) to handle the unexpected guest.

DESI staff, armed with their best PVC tube, swooped in to relocate the confused crocodile to a more suitable venue – a facility in Mackay. There, the croc will wait patiently until wildlife officers can find it a new home, possibly at a licensed farm or zoo where it can continue its culinary escapades under professional supervision.

Senior Wildlife Officer Jane Burns commented on the incident, saying, "While it isn't unusual to see crocs around Mackay, it is unusual to find one in someone's backyard." Well, Jane, they say every family has a skeleton in the closet, but in Mackay, it seems they might have a croc in the coop.

This peculiar episode follows hot on the heels of recent reports of a crocodile deciding to test its high jump skills, attempting to land in a fisherman's tinnie at Jane Creek in nearby St Helen's Beach. Witnesses say the crocodile executed a perfect swan dive, narrowly avoiding a career in aquatic acrobatics.

As the good people of Mackay navigate this unexpected croc invasion, wildlife authorities are reminding everyone to be "Crocwise in Croc Country". Tips include expecting crocs in all waterways (yes, even in your neighbour's kiddie pool), obeying warning signs (they're not just fancy decorations), and refraining from using canoes and kayaks (apparently, crocs have a thing for watercraft).

So, the next time you suspect a goanna is admiring your chicken coop, remember – it might just be a crocodile in disguise, ready for a culinary adventure and a chance at stardom.

Images: DISA

Security concern after intruder spends night just metres from Queen

An intruder who was given access to the Army Barracks by soldiers who protect Queen Elizabeth has sparked a security concern.

The man, who claimed to be a priest, told the soldiers that he was a friend of the padre to the Coldstream Guards at the base.

Soldiers allowed the man into the Victoria Barracks on Sheet Street - the week the Queen was away at Sandringham for Easter - despite not providing any form of ID.

He was given a bed and spoke to the soldiers about “how he had worked as an ejector-seat test pilot and had donated some of his organs”.

The next morning, after the intruder was given breakfast, the soldiers raised the alarm.

Police attended the barracks just hours before the Queen was due to return to Windsor Castle and removed him from site.

The fake priest however was not arrested and is believed to have been suffering from mental issues.

"Officers attended and removed the intruder from the barracks. No further action was required," a Thames Valley Police spokesman told The Sun.

Ex-Met Police commander John O’Connor said the palace should already be on “full alert” as they counteract threats.

“The timing is very serious. They should already be on full alert for the Jubilee.

“We are still under a continuing threat from terrorists, It’s this lackadaisical attitude which leads to disasters.”

Image: Getty

Outback wrangler helps his son tackle a two-metre python

The world famous "outback wrangler" has divided the internet after sharing a video of his two-year-old son wrestling with a python.

Matt Wright, who runs the Top End Safari camp in the Northern Territory, posted a video to Instagram of his son Banjo grappling with an olive python's tail, one of the largest snakes in Australia.

Matt, who also hosts the popular National Geographic show Outback Wrangler, captioned the video "learning the ropes", as Banjo follows in his dad's footsteps.

In the video, Banjo is seen dressed in his outback khaki outfit, as he desperately tries to pull the massive snake away from the family's property.

“Pull him out buddy, pull him out,” Wright said, as Banjo holds onto the snake’s tail.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by MATT WRIGHT - OUTBACK WRANGLER (@mattwright)

“Oh no, he’s wrapped up, here I’ll help you,” he added, as the python wraps himself around the pole and heads towards Wright’s feet.

Matt helps his son untangle the snake from the pole of the house's exterior, before encouraging Banjo to keep pulling the snake back towards the bushes.

When the snake refuses to budge, Banjo drops the tail and yells, “Oh no, oh no” before running back to his dad.

Matt continues to encourage his son, before sweeping him off the ground when the toddler almost puts himself in a dangerous position.

“Watch out, he’ll bite ya,” Wright said.

“What are we gonna do? Community outrage as four-lane road built metres from front doors

Peter Coles loved the quiet lifestyle of the Willowdale development in Sydney's south-west that he paid $805,000 for his home in 2018.

"We thought there'd be plenty of room for parking, plenty of room for safety, if children got out of the house and onto the road, they'd be a fair way from the traffic," he told A Current Affair.

His house and his neighbours houses were built 15 metres from Denham Court Road, but things are changing as two lanes are becoming four.

Constant traffic is going past 2.5 metres of their front yards and just 4 metres from their front doors.

"We knew they were going to do the road up but this is horrific, really we had no idea of it," resident Robert Jackson said.

Developer Stockland did a letter drop in 2019 saying that the road would be expanded, but residents claim that no specific details were given about the road.

Mr Coles said "now we look out and, within two-and-a-half metres, we've got cars and trucks, all sorts of vehicles, moving past at 70 kilometres an hour."

Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils CEO Charles Casuscelli said that the road is a safety issue.

"Sometimes councils and state government agencies need people to thump desks and look them in the eyes and say, 'if you were living here, what would you want?'," Mr Casuscelli said.

'I'll tell you what they don't want. Florida man goes head to head with five-metre python in terrifying battle

A man who wrangled with a five-metre python has come out bruised and battered, but clearly proud of winning the battle against the serpent “monster.”

Burmese Pythons are considered invasive species in Florida as they eat indigenous animals.

Mr Kimmel says he went in search of “an invasive man eater” on June 7 to Martin County Trapping & Wildlife Rescue, but quickly realised “she wasn’t coming without a fight” after finding one in a swamp.

“I noticed her almost immediately as soon as we crossed paths, I could barely contain my excitement,” he wrote in a heartyFacebook post.

“She definitely was not afraid of me and started to slowly cruise through the vegetation as I carefully walked next to her trying to gauge exactly how large she was because of all the grass and weeds it was hard to tell but I could tell she was an absolute monster.”

Image: Facebook

He wrote she was tangled in vegetation making her capture difficult and described the animal as 68kg of “solid muscle”.

“I knew going for her head first would be the easiest and safest capture method but I couldn’t turn down the chance to grab her by the tail and dance with the devil herself,” he wrote.

“As soon as I grabbed a hold of her I sealed my fate. No turning back now, she was coming for me.

“She immediately started to battle it out, taking strikes and pulling me into some tall grass with her, making it difficult to dodge her strikes. She was able to successfully get a bite on me.”

Mr Kimmel’s arm went to explain he was punctured by her fangs, “piercing an artery and hitting some nerves”.

Despite the damage, the pair continued to battle.

Embed image

“After losing about a gallon of blood I was able to tire her out and get her under control,” he wrote.

“I then used a snake bag I had on my waist to tourniquet my arm because I was getting worried about how much blood I was losing, better safe than sorry.

“I then had to drag all 150lbs (68kg) of her alive, working to control my breathing so I didn’t pass out from blood loss and the extreme heat that day, I would have been screwed.”

The snake catcher says once he got the snake back to his boat, he euthanised her.

It hasn’t officially been measured, but Mr Kimmel claims the snake was five-metres long and included a photo of it draped over his shoulders.

Man attacked by 2.5 metre croc used this tip to escape

An off-duty wildlife ranger has made a surprising escape from the jaws of a 2.5 metre crocodile after it launched at him while flyfishing.

Craig Dickmann, 54, was flyfishing at the remote Cape York Peninsula when the crocodile shot out of the water and attacked his thigh.

While he was wrestling free from the crocodile, his hand became degloved and he was able to poke the crocodile in the eye.

After escaping from the jaws of the saltwater crocodile, Dickmann drove more than an hour to Heathlands Ranger Station where he works to get help.

Queensland Ambulance Service superintendent Warren Martin said that it was incredible that Dickmann survived such an attack.

"This was a life or death response," he said to ABC.

"The patient really understood the gravity of the situation and knew that he was fighting for his survival."

After arriving at Heathlands Ranger Station, Dickmann called emergency services and was given first aid by another ranger. The ranger then drove Dickmann to Bramwell Station to wait for a Royal Flying Doctor Service (RFDS) plane.

Bramwell Station owner Wendy Kozicka said that Dickmann was in good spirits despite the attack.

"He was very cheerful — but he's a very cheerful person," Ms Kozicka said.

"His hands were wrapped up and we were teasing him about that, saying 'Are you sure you have all your fingers?'"

Superintendent Warren Martin said that the incident was a “remarkable story” of survival.

"There wouldn't be many people in Cape York who could say they have had an interaction with a crocodile like this and still be talking about it," he said.

"Not only was [Mr Dickmann] by himself fishing, but after being released by the crocodile having to drive for an hour back to his residence to seek help."

Dickmann remains in a serious but stable condition at Cairns Hospital, where he is expected to undergo surgery. He is being supported by his family and senior departmental staff.

Can you spot the two-metre snake hiding in this sewing room?

Your sewing room isn’t exactly the first place you’d expect to find a snake. But with plenty of nooks and crannies in this one, it would be the perfect place for a snake to rest its scales.

A woman got a huge surprise yesterday when she found the two-metre coastal carpet python, calling reptile wrangling company Snake Catchers Brisbane, Ipswich, Logan & Gold Coast to her Sherwood home, southwest of Brisbane

In a post on the company’s Facebook page, the business said the snake “had made itself quite comfortable here in a sewing room of a Sherwood home. If it weren't for the few displaced items, the homeowner wouldn't have noticed it.”

A photo of the room, with the snake hiding, was posted on Facebook by the company which started a game of what we’re calling “Where’s Snakey?”

As the Daily Mail reports, snake catcher Jasmine Zeleny said that coastal carpet pythons can grow to a length of up to three metres and were often caught in Brisbane.

“They’re a non-venomous species, and they do very well in an urban environment,” she said.

How long did it take you to spot the snake? Small car dragged 10 metres along a Sydney road by a truck

Dash cam footage has captured the moment a Mini Cooper was dragged 10 metres down a busy Sydney road by a truck.

The footage, which was uploaded to Facebook group Dash Cam Owners Australia, has sparked a debate online as to whether the truck driver could’ve seen the Mini hoping to merge into his lane.

It is believed the collision occurred at the intersection of Sam Johnson Way and Epping Road, in Sydney’s Lane Cove.

The video shows the blue Mini Copper travelling in the left lane at the intersection. The car then attempts to move out of the lane, sneaking in front of a large truck to the right without using an indicator.

When the lights turn green, the car is halfway across the lane and the truck driver takes off, dragging the Mini for about 10 metres.

“Might have been better off just going left,” the dash cam owner said of the incident.

Some viewers believe that the truck driver was at fault, saying that he should face repercussions for his actions.

“That truck driver is a loose cannon and company needs to fire him,” wrote one Facebook user. “Regardless of the car cutting in, there is no justification in the truck driver’s actions.”

However, many believe that the Mini is at fault for not knowing that they were merging into the lane at a blind spot for the truck.

“Please hand your licence in if you don’t realise this is a massive blind spot for a truck,” wrote one person.

“He can’t see them, put a box next to the front passenger quarter panel of your car, jump in the driver’s seat and see if you can see it.”

“I’m a truckie myself and believe me I cop this every day,” wrote another. “It makes me laugh how some people will say why didn’t he check his blind spot.

“It’s called a blind spot for a reason. All I can say is if u stay in a truck’s blind spot expect to get hit but remember one thing, trucks don’t do fender benders.”

Who do you think is at fault? Queensland mother spots monster two-metre python in backyard

Queensland mother Megan Manly has described the “nightmare” of spotting a two-metre python in her backyard, before barricading herself and her toddler inside.

It could have been much worse though, as she had repaid a hole in the screen door just two hours before discovering the menacing serpent lurking outside.

Had she failed to do so, the massive snake might have been able to make its way inside where she was taking cover with her two-year-old son, Sam.

"I was about to leave the house to pick up my eldest son from school when I saw my dog up on his hunches, with his hair standing up looking outside," she told the Sunshine Coast Daily.

"Before the snake catcher came I had barricaded us in the lounge, in case the snake came through the screen door. Cruise ship hit by 9-metre waves

Startling new footage of a terrifying weather event striking a Florida-bound Royal Caribbean cruise ship has emerged, and it has to be seen to be believed. The “hurricane-force storm” produced 9-metre waves, slamming against the ship and even pushing it to a 45-degree angle.

Supposed to be a week-long cruise from New Jersey to Florida and the Bahamas, the journey was cut short and passengers refunded due to the 14-hour-long storm, which sent deck chairs flying and wreaking havoc on the ship’s interior.

Questions have been raised as to why the cruise was allowed to go ahead, after the National Weather Service’s Ocean Prediction Centre issued a storm alert four days prior to departure.

Related links:

25 tips from cruise ship insiders

Cruise ship nearly crashes into waterfront home

Science behind getting your sea legs

99-year-old and 92-year-old go head-to-head in 60-metre sprint

Most people would be thrilled to make it to their 90s with their mind and body still intact, but two extraordinary nonagenarians have taken it a step further, battling it out in a nail-biting 60-metre track race.

Orville Rogers, 99, and Dixon Hemphill, 92, went head-to-head in the sprint race at the USATF Masters Indoor Track & Field Championships in New Mexico, USA. Hemphill maintained a slight lead for the first 55 metres before Rogers, a WWII veteran, narrowly overtook his younger competitor and won by five-hundredths of a second!

Compared to the under-10 second personal bests of Olympians running the men’s 100m, the elderly duo’s times of 18 and 18.05 seconds to complete 60 metres is certainly impressive. So, it’s no surprise that footage of the thrilling race, posted to Facebook, quickly went viral.

“I took off, and I was a little bit ahead so I thought, ‘This is going well,’” Hemphill told Runner’s World of his early lead. “I think had I leaned a little bit, I would have won.”

However, Hemphill wasn’t too disappointed at his loss. The pair also faced off in the 200m, 400m, 800m an 1600m, with the 92-year-old coming up trumps in these longer events. “I guess he has the speed and I have the distance,” Hemphill chuckled.

Video: USA Track & Field/Facebook.
