Sweet reason why Kochie wore lipstick live on air

David Koch wore bright red lipstick in an interview on Sunrise on Monday morning- all for a good cause.

The Sunrise host wore the bold colour while interviewing model Jett Kenny, the son of sporting greats Grant Kenny and Lisa Curry.

Jett also put on red lipstick mid-interview as part of the Lip-Stick It campaign - an initiative that encourages Aussie men to wear lipstick on May 11 to raise awareness and help raise funds for women’s mental health support services.

“Less than half of the women experiencing mental health are seeking help,” Jett said on Sunrise.

The initiative comes after the tragic death of Jett’s sister Jaimi, who had passed away three years ago from mental health issues.

Ever since then Jett had vowed to raise awareness and funding for the cause, and is now the inaugural ambassador for the Lip-Stick It campaign.

“Encouraging those people to just talk about it and having the strength that they might need to voice what they are going through. I think that was the biggest thing I found was they were so reserved, or she [Jaimi] was so reserved talking about her issues and her struggles”, Jett said.

He added that, although not everyone with mental health issues experiences the same thing, he wants to encourage women to “just speak about it”.

Kochie then told Jeff to “whack on the lippie”, as they talked about the campaign further.

“I was trying to [apply lipstick] the other day and it is quite difficult. I might look like the Joker while I do this,” Jett told Kochie.

“A lot of people think I look like the Joker without the lipstick,” Kochie quipped.

Jokes aside, Jett then told the Sunrise host how proud he was to launch the campaign and support the women in their lives.

“It’s our chance for us men to get behind the women that we love and support and show that we care,” Jett said.

“If all it takes is to put on some red lipstick to start a conversation, and talk about it, I feel like it’s the least we can do.

“It’s a big thing, not only for myself but for a lot of people. It could be happening to a person you work with, someone you know, but they you know – might not be talking about it because they don’t feel comfortable to do so,” he added.

Jaimi died on September 14, 2020, following an 18-year battle with alcohol addiction and an eating disorder.

She died at Sunshine Coast University Hospital and was surrounded by her family at the time of her death.

In late January, Lisa Curry posted an emotional tribute to her eldest daughter in honour of her memory.

Images: Sunrise on 7

Shoppers warned against using “secret lip gloss” in Aldi lipstick

Aldi shoppers are a savvy bunch, with many creating and sharing hacks for everything from packing bags to finding the best deals, but shoppers have been urged to stop using one involving the supermarket giant’s range of lipsticks out of fears it could be toxic.

The “secret lip gloss” came to light after Aussie shoppers took to Facebook to brag about the “life hack” where the store’s Lacura lipsticks could be taken apart to reveal a hidden “lip gloss”, as reported by 9Honey.

“My mind is blown!!! Am I the last one to figure out there’s lip gloss at the bottom of the Aldi lipstick???” one Brisbane woman wrote on the social media platform.

Image: Facebook

However, it turns out that the “lip gloss” in question isn’t actually makeup.

According to other social media users, the glossy substance is a colour-matching chemical intended to show customers the colour of the lipstick which shouldn’t be applied to lips as it could be toxic.

Though some commenters believed the original post, others remained sceptical.

“My guess is that it’s not meant to be lip gloss and to show the colour of the lipstick only,” one user wrote.

“If it was lip gloss they would have made it easier to 1. Open it and 2. To get it out without having to use a lip brush. I would be very careful.”

The original poster also mentioned that they broke their lipstick while trying to get the substance out - more proof that it shouldn’t be accessed.

“I have just about broken the stupid thing trying to get it off … it actually comes off easily if you do it right,” they said.

Image: Facebook

Her having any sort of cream or gloss on will affect how she blows air into the flute,” Mayo explained at the time.

“To really make the flute-proof lip, we use a liquid matte lipstick, something that has a high saturated colour but dries down so she can eat, drink, play the flute and [we know] it is not going to go anywhere.”

For the Met Gala, Mayo prepped Lizzo’s skin with Charlotte Tilbury products, including the brand’s Magic Cream, Magic Serum Crystal Elixir, and Collagen Superfusion Facial Oil.

When it came to her deep purple lipstick, Mayo again explained how dryness and pigment came into play.

“I used the Charlotte Tilbury Lip Cheat pencil in Bad Romance to shape and fill in the lip entirely,” Mayo told InStyle. “I like to start on a well-hydrated lip that has been blotted to remove any excess oil for a super long-lasting application.

“Next, I used Charlotte’s Matte Revolution Lipstick in Festival Magic with a precision lip brush to fill in the entire lip. Lippy dilemma: matte vs gloss?

Justine Tyerman takes a walk on the wild side when she dabbles in matte after a life-time of gloss.

I’ve always been a high-gloss girl, ever since I began using lipstick at the ripe old age of six.

But recently I’ve noticed the trend for matte, especially among the young ones at the weddings I’ve attended lately.

At first I didn’t like it — I thought the effect was dull and... well... not shiny.

But after a while, the matte look grew on me, as fashions often do, and I decided it was sophisticated, dramatic and ultra-chic.

I began taking more notice of matte lipsticks, who was wearing them, where, when and why.

The world of matte lipsticks

Matte lipsticks are often worn in intense colours that look bold and striking. They make a strong statement so you need the confidence... and the outfits... to go with them.

The women wearing them seem to have the ‘out-there’ personality and wardrobe to match the matte look.

There’s a “walking on the wild side,” Hollywood siren element about them.

On the down side, matte lipsticks can look dry and powdery and accentuate the creases in the lips. They are also more difficult and time-consuming to apply correctly, requiring exfoliation of the lips to get rid of dry skin before applying . . . but then they are more long-lasting than gloss.

Gloss lippy is reflective and shiny and brings out the three-dimensionality of the lips.

It’s super easy to apply — just whack it on — but it disappears faster, even if you are not talking and eating, and needs to be reapplied more often than matte.

The overall effect of gloss is smooth, healthy-looking lips which convey a radiant, fresh, dew-kissed, outdoor, carefree look.

Having tentatively experimented with a few mattes, they certainly don’t feel as nice to wear as lip gloss which is naturally hydrating. Incidentally, I don’t advise the tentative approach — if you’ve glossed all your life like I have, a sudden change to matte does not go unnoticed, so be prepared for feedback, negative, positive and uncertain.

What does the expert say?

I decided to consult an expert on the subject.

L’Oréal Paris New Zealand makeup director Lisa Matson says: “If you are wanting to create a retro or old-Hollywood glamour look, matte is the type of lipstick the professionals use as it tends to last longer.

“The only downside for matte lipsticks is it can make dry lips look drier. I recommend exfoliating lips before application and applying lip balm to hydrate the skin.

“Gloss lipsticks, on the other hand, help to make lips look fuller, soften your make-up look, especially heavy or bold eye make-up. But beware of the colour ‘bleeding’ into fine lines... and your hair getting stuck in the gloss.”

Very good point, if you have long hair.

And just as I thought I was catching up, apparently the very latest is the nude look. And then there’s the satin effect — somewhere between matte and gloss. Maybe I’ll give that a go as a safer, less risqué intermediary step.

This is why you should never use a lipstick tester

A US woman claims she contracted herpes after using a lipstick tester in a cosmetics stores, the New York Daily News reports.

In a lawsuit filed on Thursday, Elena Davoyan says she was diagnosed with oral herpes not long after using the tester in a Los Angeles store in 2015.

The California resident also said she’d never had a cold sore or any other symptom of herpes simplex 1 before entering the store.

Davoyan is suing for “liability, negligence, intentional infliction of emotional distress and negligent infliction of emotional distress for an ‘incurable lifelong affliction’,” according to the Daily News.

She believes there “numerous simple solutions” make-up retailers should use to prevent the spread of disease through lipstick samples.

However, infectious diseases experts say the woman most likely did not get herpes from a lipstick tester.

Speaking to Newsweek, Dr Amesh Adalja said herpes simplex 1 doesn’t survive well outside of the human body, but adding that you would more likely contract a cold, flu or staph or strep virus from a communal lipstick.

Dr Adalja advises people against applying make-up testers to mucous membranes like the lips or eyes, as they serve as an entry point for germs.

He adds that although some stores provide tissues and other products for customers to wipe the surface of testers, it isn’t necessarily going to prevent the spread of viruses and bacteria.

If you’re desperate to sample a lipstick before you buy it, Dr Adalja advises it is best to swipe the product on your hand instead of your lips.

The common mistakes people make with lipstick

Not only will lipstick put a little instant confidence in your step, it has been proven to make you appear younger. So easy to apply, it's one beauty tool that is worth using all day, everyday. Annoyingly though, lipstick doesn't always last too long before the colour disappears. Follow these four easy steps to ensure you lipstick stays put all the day through.

Starts with a good base – We're talking here about exfoliation - it is KEY. Chapped lips - even dry lips - simply does not make a good base for lasting lipcolour. Even more so during the cooler (chapped lip inducing weather), you should be regularly exfoliating your lips. A wash cloth or very gentle exfoliator will do the trick. There are also targeted products if you'd prefer.

Nourish and nourish again – Well hydrated lips that are both soft and smooth will hold lipstick in place for much longer than dry, flakey lips. To get super smooth lips, make sure you are using a moisturising balm and applying it throughout the day.

Start in the middle – This might sound odd, but when one starts applying a lipstick from the outside in it creates more room for error - think colouring outside of the lip and smudges. By starting in the middle you will have greater control.

Don't forget to blot – A step that we most likely tell ourselves we are simply in too much of a rush for, blotting is actually a very crucial step. Grab a tissue and simply blot your lips after your fist application of colour. Repeat with a second coat.

Related links:

The key to looking younger

How to wake up looking fresh (even when you’re not!)

6 fixes for the most annoying beauty issues

How to find the perfect red lipstick

There’s nothing quite like a bright, bold lip to take your look from casual to smart or from day to night so quickly and easily, and red is the ultimate classic lip colour. However, many avoid it for fear of looking too “done-up” or because they believe it doesn’t suit them. So, today, we’re going to prove to you that anyone can rock red. We’ve got one for every skin colour and every budget – all you need to do is find an outfit to match!

Fair skin

If you’ve got fair skin, you’ll know just how difficult it can be to find a shade that isn’t too bright or too dark. Orange-reds and deep, dark reds are the hardest to pull off for your skin tone, so steer towards true red – that’s the hue with a dash of blue, which perfectly complements your colouring (particularly if you have lighter-coloured hair) and even makes your teeth appear whiter.

Best budget buy: Rimmel Lasting Finish Kate Moss in Muse Red, $13.95

Best luxury buy: MAC Ruby Woo, $36

Medium skin

You’re in luck – almost any shade of red will look great on you. That being said, reds with blue undertones can tend to look pinkish on medium and olive skin. Orange-reds, deep reds and dark reds (think a nice glass of pinot noir) are your best bets, but really, you can’t go wrong.

Best budget buy: NYX Turnt Up Lipstick in Burlesque, $12.95

Best luxury buy: NARS Trans Siberian, $40

Dark skin

Darker-skinned ladies can get away with extra-bright shades as well as deeper reds – think a classic red, blood-red, or even purpley-red to bring out your skin’s gorgeous undertones. If you find a bright red too contrasting, simply line your lips with a darker coloured pencil to deepen the red of the lipstick.

Best budget buy: NATIO Rush, $14.95

Best luxury buy: Stila Stay All Day Matte'ificent Lipstick, $31

Related links:

You can now buy lipstick with wine in it

5 tips for fuller lips

4 home remedies for chapped lips

Boy blames lipstick graffiti on Batman

According to this little rascal, the caped crusader has turned to a life or crime. Quick-thinking Noel spins his tale so aptly that it’s nearly impossible not to believe him.

This adorable video shows his mother, Laura Hopkins, in their home in Inverness, Scotland, asking her little one “Who drew on mummy’s mirror, was it you?”

Noel stands in front of the lipstick spoiled mirror and shifts the blame to the first conceivable person he can think of. “Batman. How to stop lipstick bleeding

Don’t let lipstick bleed ruin your look. Follow our advice to avoid the dreaded smearing.

Choose your weapon

If you are after staying power, a gloss lipstick may not be the best option. These tend to bleed out from the mouth faster than a matte based lipstick.

Stay inside the lines

The professionals have long used lip liners to keep colour in its place. They act as a barrier to stop the lipstick from smearing or moving around.

Match your colours

Always avoid using a liner that is darker than your lipstick colour, otherwise you will run the risk of the dreaded clown mouth. The liner and lipstick should match in shade and tone. You can use the liner to fill in the lips first before applying the colour over the top.

Blot twice to seal

To keep your colour where you want it, apply the lipstick, blot with a tissue, and then apply again.

Keep lips supple

Before you even take out your makeup bag, it’s important to ensure your lips are in good shape. A lip exfoliator will remove dead flaky skin from the lips when used once a week.

Change your shade

Don’t get caught in a lipstick rut. What suited you ten years ago may not suit you anymore due to changes in skin tone or hair colour. Be bold and try new shades. You never know, you might just find your perfect match.

Related links:

12 age-defying ways to style short hair

Do you really need a base coat for your nails?

7 beauty myths to stop believing

What the shape of your lipstick says about you

When it comes to your lipstick, you may be revealing more than you think. While your favourite pink or red can reveal something about your personality, the shape of your well-used lipstick speaks volumes. Well, all in the name of good fun anyway. What shape are you?

Rounded to a point: You have a strong personality, which some might find polarising. You are independent and opinionated, but are incredibly supportive of friends.

Rounded and smooth: You live life like you apply your lipstick, smoothly. You love family and friends and you take pride in your creative hobbies. You’re afraid to get into trouble and play it safe.

Curved: You’re incredibly conscientious and love doing things for others. Your empathy is both a strength and a weakness, as some might call you a “people pleaser.”

Flat: You’re ambitious, curious, and goal-oriented, and have always been one to finish what you started.

Pointed: You’re a natural flirt, are charismatic, and have known to be the life of the party. Sometimes, your vanity gets the best of you.

Diagonal: You’re a natural leader and love to be the centre of attention. Humour is your forte, but you have difficulty relinquishing control to others.

Related links:

Darker shades chip quickest (and 5 other things you didn’t know about nail polish)

5 biggest mistakes you’re making with eyeliner

5 things we’ve learnt (and loved) about fashion from Baddie Winkle
