6 little known facts about The Sound of Music

The Sound of Music, released in 1965, continues to be one of the most beloved family films of all time. In honour of the iconic film, we look behind the scenes to reveal some little known facts about one of our favourite movies.

1. Julie Andrews kept falling over during the famous opening mountain scene

While Julie Andrews may look graceful twirling atop the mountain in the opening scenes, in reality she kept being knocked over by the draft of the helicopter trying to capture the iconic aerial scene. Andrews said: “the down draft from those jets was so strong that every time… the helicopter circled around me and the down draft just flattened me into the grass. And I mean flattened. It was fine for a couple of takes, but after that you begin to get just a little bit angry… And I really tried. I mean, I braced myself, I thought, ‘It’s not going to get me this time.’ And every single time, I bit the dust.”

2. Christopher Plummer hates the movies

Fans of Christopher Plummer’s Captain von Trapp will be disappointed to learn that he hated the film so much he called it “The Sound of Mucus”. “Because it was so awful and sentimental and gooey,” he said. “You had to work terribly hard to try and infuse some minuscule bit of humour into it.” To ease his pain, Plummer drank, even on set. He admitted on the DVD commentary that he was drunk when filming the Austrian music festival scene.

3. Charmian Carr injured herself during “Sixteen going on seventeen”

Charmian Carr, who played Liesl Von Trapp, slipped while leaping from a bench in the gazebo scene. She fell through the glass and injured her ankle. In the scene, she is wearing a bandage on her leg, which is covered by make up.

4. Friedrich grew 15 centimetres during the six months of filming

Nicholas Hammond, who played Friedrich Von Trapp, grew from 1.60 metres to 1.75 metres in the six months of filming. It caused many continuity problems in the movie as Friedrich had to be shorter than Liesl but taller than Louisa. As the beginning of the film, Hammond had lifts in his films but by the end, Carr who played Liesl had to stand on a box.

5. Mia Farrow auditioned for the role of Liesl.

Watch her audition tape here.

6. The film is historically inaccurate

The movie is loosely based on the autobiography of Maria von Trapp, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers, but the film took many liberties. For instance, there were 10 von Trapp children, not seven. Maria left the convent to tutor one of the children, not to governess all them. Georg was a kind man, not the stern disciplinarian as depicted the film. Maria and him were married 11 years before the Nazis invaded Austria. And the Von Trapp family didn’t escape from the mountains by crossing over the mountains – that would have led straight to Hitler’s Germany.

94-year-old grandma takes on huge travel challenge

"Grandma Joy" Ryan was 91 when she first got her passport, and she hasn't stopped travelling since.

Now aged 94, she is embarking on a new global challenge with her grandson Brad Ryan, 42, with the intergenerational duo planning to travel to all seven continents in the world together.

"I don't have many years left, [so] you hop to it," Grandma Joy told CNN Travel.

"If you slow down, you don't get anything done."

The pair, who are from the US, have already travelled to three continents, visiting Banff National Park in Canada last year to "represent North America well beyond just our own country", and Africa in 2023, visiting both Amboseli National Park and Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya.

Their most recent trip was to South America, where they travelled to Ecuador, and spent time in the Galapagos Islands, as well as Chile.

"It was amazing to see those huge tortoises," Grandma Joy recalled. "They could raise their shells up just like a convertible or something."

Prior to travelling the world together, the grandma-grandson duo were actually estranged for around a decade due to a family rift that occurred after Ryan's parents divorced.

After reconnecting in 2010, Ryan was telling his grandma about his previous hiking adventures on the Appalachian Trail and Mount Kilimanjaro, when he learnt that his grandmother "had never set eyes on a mountain."

"That was one of her lifelong regrets," he said.

"Her travel had been limited to just a few road trips to Florida with my grandfather when he was alive.

"Her view of the world was always what she saw on the Travel Channel or just on the news."

That conversation stuck with him and the pair embarked on their first journey together in 2015, when Ryan decided to take a weekend road trip to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

"At 85, she saw her first mountain, climbed her first mountain and went camping for the first time and fell off the air mattress a couple of times and didn't complain," he said.

He added, that having to move more slowly as he was travelling with his grandma, meant that he was able to appreciate everything in a more meaningful way.

"I wasn't rushing through the places that I was visiting. I was really taking the time to appreciate smaller details.

"The lens through which she is seeing the world is very different to most people my age. She doesn't visit a place thinking, 'Well, I'll be back again,' so there's more presence."

They kept the adventure going and decided to travel to the 62 other US National Parks, and while it took them almost eight years with two-month long breaks between each trip, Grandma Joy made history last year.

She became the oldest person to visit all 63 National Parks in the US.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Grandma Joy’s Road Trip — Brad and Joy Ryan (@grandmajoysroadtrip)

"Being an old person sitting on the porch, this makes you feel like, 'Well maybe I did accomplish something.' So I enjoyed every bit of it," she said.

Ryan himself is very proud of his grandmother's achievement, and after going viral with their national parks quest in 2023, he said that travelling with her has been a life-changing experience.

"She shattered my preconceived notions about what it means to be an older person," he said.

"Because she wasn't just sitting in the passenger seat looking out the window, although we did that too."

He then described how Grandma Joy went ziplining at New River Gorge National Park and Preserve in West Virginia and whitewater rafting at Wrangell St. Elias National Park in Alaska at the age of 91, and how she reminded him of all the possibilities that come with getting older.

"I think we all have this sort of innate dread about getting older," he said.

"And we think about the limitations instead of the possibilities. She [Grandma Joy] reminds us of the possibilities that still exist."

While the pair are currently "still recovering" from their latest trip to South America, they shared their plan to visit Australia later this year, and hope to "hop over to Asia" after.

Once they've ticked off Australia and Asia off their list, they plan to visit Europe and hope to end their trip in Antarctica.

"Antarctica is the one that's like the wildcard," Ryan said. "We would love that, but getting there is challenging.

"I'd like to end big, and I think Antarctica would be the cherry on top of this adventure."

The duo document all their adventures on their Instagram account, grandmajoysroadtrip and despite people wondering when they would wrap it up, Grandma Joy's "willing spirit" keeps her going.

"I just take one step at a time, one day at a time, and thank the Lord every morning for giving me one more day," she said.

"I try to be an optimist. The glass is half full, not half empty. And the people that you meet along the way lift your spirits.

"You see people in worse shape than you, and I just think 'I've got a lot to be thankful for.'

"Not everybody's lucky enough to have a grandson that's willing to drag them around."

Images: Instagram

Hero shopkeeper uses shoelace to help deliver baby in carpark

A Cheap as Chips discount store worker in Logan has been praised as a hero after helping a couple deliver their baby in the carpark behind a 7-Eleven service station.

Sharyn Daley thought it was just another day at work on Friday, when a man ran into her store asking for a towel because his partner had gone into labour.

She quickly sprung into action and helped with a successful delivery before paramedics arrived.

“(All I could think of was) just survival. Someone needed help. So, you just rush and do what you can and instincts take over,” she told Sunrise hosts Nat Barr and Matt Shirvington.

“Dad was in shock. I sort of asked him to get the little toddler out of the back seat and occupy her — she was panicking.

“But after he got his toddler out, I could concentrate on mum and telling her baby is OK."

Daley added that when the baby boy came out he was somewhat discoloured — so, she began squeezing his arm and rubbing his head.

“Mum was very quiet. She introduced herself. I introduced myself. And she just kept saying, ‘is baby OK, Is baby OK?’ I said ‘Yes, I’m patting him hard and stimulating him to get more oxygen in. That’s all’.”

She then grabbed a shoelace to tie off his umbilical cord and used her sock to grab the placenta.

Paramedics arrived shortly after.

Daley, who is a mother-of-three and a grandmother to one, said that she had previously helped deliver puppies, which may have helped her.

“I think it may have (helped) a bit — with tying off the cord — and things like that. (But) keeping mum and bub and dad calm. That was my first priority,” she said.

She also added that she wanted to help the young family get started.

“I would love to speak to them,” Daley said.

“Courtesy of Cheap as Chips where I work. We have a cot, a change table, a mattress and a beautiful big hamper for them to help them get started,” she said.

Image: Seven

Unique way couple raised $11K for their wedding

When Andie Lickiss proposed to Pagan on New Years Eve in 2021, he had no idea that the pair would spend the next year collecting trash from their neighbours.

With the cost-of-living on the rise, the couple were doing everything they could to save up for their dream wedding on September 2023.

“We were both working two jobs, trying to save for a house, and everything is just so expensive,” Pagan told 7Life.

“We didn’t want the wedding to put us in debt.”

While thinking of ways to cut corners and save more money, Pagan - who was a keen recycler and had been using a state government-run recycling initiative, Return and Earn, since 2018 - felt inspired to take her recycling to the next level after spotting a wheelie bin in her backyard.

Pagan then took to her local community Facebook page to ask her neighbours for their unwanted bottles and cans to help with the cost of their wedding, with the initiative offering 10 cents per aluminium can, plastic or glass bottle deposited.

“I had about 50 messages from people ... saying they will just stack them outside their house and we can come and collect,” she said.

She then started mapping out the perfect route to pick up the recycling ,and not long after, the couple began their trash-collecting journey almost every day after work in their ute and trailer.

“People might laugh because it is only 10 cents (per container),” she said.

“But every little bit counts.”

Over 19 months the couple recycled more than 100,000 containers, and made memories along the way, as they got closer to their neighbours who would donate cardboard boxes and wheelie bins full of empty cans and bottles.

They also volunteered at local sporting events and spent weekends cleaning up fields and stadiums.

Each dollar went towards their goal of $4,500 to pay for their dream photographer, with the couple sometimes pocketing more than $400 at a time when they cashed in each load.

Within six months the couple had reached their goal, but they didn't stop there.

“I couldn’t believe it,” Pagan said.

“We just decided to keep going. The cost of living wasn’t getting cheaper.”

Andie and Pagan cashed in cans and bottles right up until the week before their wedding.

“We never told anyone how much we made,” Pagan said.

“Our celebrant announced it at the wedding (and) the looks on everyone’s faces! They were so shocked, and our photographers caught it.”

The couple collected a grand total of $11,127.50 with the help of their local community, and now Pagan encourages others to reach out and ask for help.

“I hope that people who are doing it tough are not afraid to reach out and ask for help.”

Images: 7News

New York designer and style icon Iris Apfel has passed away aged 102.

Her death was confirmed by her commercial agent, Lori Sale, who called Apfel "extraordinary", although no cause of death was given.

Apfel, who was born on August 29, 1921, was known for her eccentric outfits, oversized black-rimmed glasses, bright red lipstick and short white hair.

Her death was also announced on the fashion icon's official Instagram page, on Friday US time, just one day after she celebrated her 102nd-and-a-half birthday.

"Working alongside her was the honour of a lifetime. I will miss her daily calls, always greeted with the familiar question: 'What have you got for me today?'" Sale said in a statement.

"She was a visionary in every sense of the word. "Cruel" shopper slammed for leaving dog in hot car

A woman has been slammed on social media for allegedly leaving her dog in an unattended car for 40 minutes on a hot day.

The incident occurred at Warringah Mall in Sydney's north on Monday, when temperatures reached up to 28 degrees.

Claire, claimed the dog-owner pulled up next to her in an undercover car park, and then watched the woman leave her pet locked in an unattended car while she shopped.

"Myself and my mother waited till she got back," she told Yahoo News Australia.

"It was around 3.15pm and she didn’t come back till just before 4pm".

During that time, Claire said she called security, who attempted to contact the owner via a mobile number on the dog's harness. She also tried calling the RSPCA and police but claimed that not much could be done.

When the owner finally returned, Claire questioned her about leaving the "panting and drooling" animal unattended, but the woman reportedly just "laughed and scoffed" before "driving away as quick as possible".

Claire shared photos of the pup on Facebook and criticised the owner, for her "absolute irresponsibility and disgusting behaviour", calling her an "absolute d**khead".

"People like you should not own animals," she wrote.

While many agreed that the woman's actions were "absolutely awful," a few others argued the act was fine as the car was undercover and "the dog doesn't look hot and distressed at all."

Another person who claimed to know the owner, said that the woman's car "has an aircon function which allows the air-conditioning to run when the engine is not running" and the pet is generally "very spoiled and happy".

A few others disagreed, and said that the act was "cruel" and "simply disgusting" regardless.

"Undercover or not you don't lock a baby in a car, you don't lock an animal in a car ... no excuse," one wrote.

An RSPCA spokesperson has also spoken out and said that leaving a dog inside a car unattended is "always dangerous" no matter the location or the temperature outside.

They said that even on mild days, temperatures in a car can "rapidly heat up" and can reach "double" the outside temperature.

"When it’s 22 degrees Celsius outside, the inside of a car can reach a stifling 47 degrees and this is no environment for a dog," the spokesperson said.

Image: Facebook

Valentine's Day proposal sparks backlash for litter

While Valentines day is the perfect day to celebrate all kinds of love, Manly residents were left fuming in the aftermath of one couple's elaborate proposal.

On Wednesday, residents were forced to pick up "hundreds of plastic petals", used candles and plastic wrapping discarded on Manly beach, which marine experts have branded "very intentional" littering.

One local said that "no attempt was made to pick it up" and they were sure that hundreds of the petals would've already "blown into the sea to float around choking wildlife for the next several hundred years".

"Candles were placed in the sand, so it seems the celebration took place there on the beach as well as above by the footpath," the resident wrote in a Facebook post.

"Plastic petals are cheaper than the real thing, but surely whoever you’re doing this for would prefer fewer real petals to hundreds or thousands of fake ones.

"I usually just pick things up and get on with it but this was all very intentional and I believe it doesn’t actually occur to some people to consider the impact when making decisions like this so I want to say: Think about your long term impact, make choices accordingly and feel better about them."

Conservationists have also slammed the act, and said that the littering would likely result in the death of wildlife.

"These photos are pretty shocking to see, especially knowing that these items were intentionally littered," vice president of Ocean Conservancy’s plastics program, Nicholas Mallos told Yahoo News.

"In sufficient quantities, ingesting plastics like these can absolutely harm birds and sea creatures.

He added flexible plastics and polyester petals can be deadly if it is consumed by smaller animals as it can block their digestive tracts causing them to starve, and disrupts their reproductive behaviours.

"It takes only a few tiny pieces of plastic to kill a sea turtle hatchling, for example," Mallos said.

"There’s no doubt the beach is a spectacular setting for an event, but it does require special attention to protect the surrounding ecosystem," he added.

AMCS Plastics & Packaging Program Manager Tara Jones also agreed, and said there are "far better earth-safe alternatives."

She said that "around 90 per cent of all seabirds alive today have ingested plastic of some kind."

"Juvenile sea turtles, like the ones hatching now along the Queensland coasts, have been known to ingest hundreds of pieces of plastic in their short life.

"Our ocean wildlife deserves better."

Images: Facebook

Mum's list of chores for babysitter divides internet

An American mum and schoolteacher has divided social media after she shared a list of chores that her 17-year-old babysitter could do for extra cash.

Katrina Ivan hired a former student, who is now a senior in high school, to babysit her two-year-old son.

The busy mum, who had been struggling to maintain her home, left an optional list of chores the babysitter could do for some extra cash.

“You are more than welcome to hang out and watch TV but if you want to earn some extra cash these are up for grabs,” the note read.

She claimed that her son was already asleep when the babysitter arrived at 7:30pm and she would be looking after him until 11:30pm.

The babysitter was being paid $115.45 for the four hours of work.

The extra chores included organising the kitchen island, which would earn the student $15, as would cleaning the windows and mirrors in the house and sweeping and mopping the kitchen floor.

Cleaning out the fridge would earn the her $23, while vacuuming the couch would earn her $4.

A few other optional chores included re-organising the toys, organising the kitchen island, and re-organising the silverware, which were all chores that would earn the student $15.

The babysitter earned an extra $92 for the chores she chose, and a few social media users have said that this was a great idea.

“I wish they did this when I was a babysitter. Would have loved the opportunity to earn extra," one wrote.

“This is a great idea!! Sometimes it’s boring to just to sit and watch TV, this makes time go by quicker and sometimes it’s things I would do to help," another said.

“I think since it’s optional or not you can give whatever amounts. It’s still the babysitters choice whether to do it or not,” a third added.

However a few others weren't as impressed.

“Those are 1990 prices,” one social media user wrote.

“$23 for the fridge that’s wild," another added.

“I think if you mention it ahead of time ‘oh I left a chore list if you’re interested in any of them it’s extra cash for you!’ Because if I just arrived to this note I might be a little uncomfortable,” a third said.

Images: TikTok

South Australian Government's sprinkles ban sparks outrage

New guidelines for school canteens in South Australia have sparked outrage for "taking all the enjoyment away from children".

Sprinkles of any kind, including 100s and 1000s - which are an essential ingredient for the iconic fairy bread - have been categorised as “red 2", meaning that they “should not be promoted or encouraged in schools on any occasion”.

The ban comes after processed meats including ham would be limited at canteens in Western Australia, with similar restrictions now in place for South Australian canteens.

Processed meats fall into the “red 1” or “amber” categories in South Australia, which means that products featuring them would be limited depending on nutritional criteria.

These restrictions mean that children will no longer be able to regularly enjoy Australian staples like ham and cheese toasties and fairy bread at school.

“Why are they taking all the enjoyment away from children?” one person told 7News.

Dieticians have also questioned the decision, saying that it might only cause further problems in the future.

“All your brain wants to do is eat that food, and eventually, you can restrict it for a little bit, until you get to that point where you just give in, you want to eat it, and then you binge,” dietitian Mattea Palombo said.

Another expert suggested changing the foods we associate with good times.

“Celebration foods aren’t so much about the foods that we have at the time of the celebration, but the friends and family we have around at the time of celebrating,” dietitian Dr Evangeline Mantzioris said.

“So I think we probably need to balance it out a bit, so healthy foods are available at those celebrations.”

Although the changes impact canteens, parents are still free to pack whatever they want in their kids' lunchboxes.

Images: Getty

"Am I being too sensitive?": Woman's dilemma after partner forgets 60th birthday

A woman has shared her dilemma on how to approach her partner of 30 years, after he forgot her 60th birthday.

"It's my 60th birthday today, and my partner of 30 years has not acknowledged it. Should I tell him?" she titled her post on Reddit.

"It's my actual birthday today, and whilst we have planned a big party for next weekend, when I woke up this morning I expected a 'Happy Birthday!' and a smile," she continued.

"I didn't get anything. He started my coffee but he does that almost every morning.

"At first I thought maybe he forgot but now I am thinking that he thinks he doesn't have to say anything because we are having a big party this weekend.

"Am I being too sensitive? Should I tell him? If so, how?" she asked in her post.

Hundreds of Reddit users took to the comments to share their thoughts on how to approach the situation, with a few sharing crafty solutions of their own.

"I'd make a joke of it. 'I can't believe they moved my birthday!' Or 'I saw on the TV we should ask easy questions to check for dementia- I'll ask you first, when's my birthday?'" one user playfully suggested.

"I'm going to say the absolute minimum I'd expect for ANY birthday is my wife wishing me a Happy Birthday. Don't let it fester and ruin your day - just ask him about it" another added.

One user saw the bright side of things and said: "He's handed you the best birthday present of all - the opportunity to use this against him for the next twenty years.

"I'd be rubbing my hands with glee. Happy Birthday!"

"Happy Birthday. Go out and buy a large cake. Eat it all yourself. Nobody need ever know" to which she responded: "there is a Costco not that far away. Go big or go home."

Another Redditor came up with an elaborate plan on how she could get her partner's attention.

"Purchase this 'Acknowledge Me' t-shirt of WWE wrestle Roman Reigns. Then write 'Birthday' on a piece of card and use some tape to stick on the t-shirt. 'Acknowledge Me Birthday.' Then just wear it around the house," they said.

The woman was onboard with the plan, but luckily she didn't need to apply any of their crafty solutions and shared an update.

"He just came up to my home office and gave me a big hug, admitting he had forgotten because he was so focussed on both work and next weekend's party," she wrote.

"He apologised sheepishly, which was exactly the best outcome possible. Now I have both my birthday acknowledged as well as a fine story and/or bit of ammo to be saved for another day.

"So there you go. I've cancelled the 'acknowledge me' t-shirt order, and shall now share my Costco cake with him instead of eating it from across the table, glaring.

"Thank you everyone for the very fine passive aggressive suggestions which made me smile. Much appreciated!"

Image: Getty

Bunnings' inspired makeover proves a smash hit with Bluey fans

Bunnings' latest Bluey inspired makeover has proven to be a hit among fans, as they brought to life part of the cartoon-world.

The hardware giant collaborated with the hit children's cartoon and rebranded six of its Australian stores and one New Zealand outlet with the moniker "Hammerbarn."

This is an homage to a popular episode with the same name, where the cartoon heelers go to a hardware store that looks exactly like Bunnings.

“We’re excited to be working with BBC Studios and Ludo Studio to bring Hammerbarn to life in stores across the country,” says Ryan Baker, chief customer officer of Bunnings.

The rebranding goes beyond the exterior with special Hammerbarn merch, Bluey-branded trolleys, and Bluey-themed workshops, meet-and-greets and scavenger hunts every weekend.

“Our team across Australia have had kids and parents referring to Bunnings as Hammerbarn ever since the episode aired, so making this a reality in our stores for customers is really special," Baker said.

“We wanted the Hammerbarn experience to be accessible to as many ‘Bluey’ fans and customers as we could, so it’s great to have a Hammerbarn transformation in each state – even down to the kids’ trolleys that have been rebranded."

Hammerbarns resemblance to Bunnings is no coincidence as the episode reportedly took inspiration from a real store in Keperra, Queensland.

“The design of Hammerbarn draws inspiration from the Bunnings Keperra store in Brisbane, the home of Bluey, which adds an extra layer of significance," Ludo Studios, the creators of the series said.

“We are thrilled to offer fans the opportunity to experience Hammerbarn for real life; it’s everything we’ve ever wanted!”

Images: Perth Now
