Jean Harlow’s timeless style tips

Known as the “Blonde Bombshell”, this sex symbol of the silver screen was known for her elegant, curve hugging gowns and a slinky attitude to match. She was the platinum blonde that paved the way for Marilyn Monroe.

She famously claimed not to wear under garments so as not to spoil the lines of her dresses and personified classic glamour and cheeky, old world charm.

Taken at only 26, Jean Harlow had a full life ahead of her that ended in sudden tragedy. In her short time however, she imparted her impeccable sense of character and flair on the world. Here are some of the starlet’s lasting beauty and style tips below.

“I’d rather have a few dresses of very fine material, than a whole closetful of fussy cheap looking things.”

“You have to have faith in your clothes, just as you have to have faith in yourself, to be successful in dressing.”

"Personally, I dislike a made-up look. I never wear mascara unless my screen work demands it. I use only powder and lipstick."

"I believe too much make-up is bad for women who prefer a healthy, natural complexion. Every woman knows what make-up she desires, and she should deal with it judiciously."

"There are no tricks to the care of my hair at all. I use castile soap and shampoo it like everyone else might do. I never use a rinse. I shampoo it every four days, but I rub hot castor oil into my scalp before every shampoo."

"Of course, we use different make-up for our screen work than we do in our personal lives. The same thing applies to clothes. Clothes and make-up are always a part of characterisation. You must adapt yourself to the character you are portraying on the screen. That is the reason they call us actresses and actors."

Images: Getty

"The sport's greatest player": Billie Jean King's praise for Serena

Serena Williams will be remembered as tennis’ “greatest player”, according to World Tennis Association (WTA) founder Billie Jean King, after the World No. 1 announced she would be retiring from professional tennis at this year’s US Open.

Since her career began in 1995, Williams has won 39 Grand Slam titles, including 23 singles, 14 women’s doubles, and two mixed doubles, with King adding that the star player has “inspired a new generation of players and fans”.

“When Serena steps away from tennis, she will leave as the sport's greatest player,” King said in a statement.

“After a career that has inspired a new generation of players and fans, she will forever be known as a champion who won on the court and raised the global profile of the sport off of it”

Williams, who turns 41 next month, found it difficult to announce the news, writing in an op-ed published in Vogue that she felt “a great deal of pain” in deciding to hang up her racquet.

“There is no happiness in this topic for me. I know it’s not the usual thing to say, but I feel a great deal of pain. It’s the hardest thing that I could ever imagine. I hate it. I hate that I have to be at this crossroads,” Williams said.

“I keep saying to myself, I wish it could be easy for me, but it’s not. I’m torn: I don’t want it to be over, but at the same time I’m ready for what’s next.”

Taking to Instagram, Williams shared photos from her Vogue cover, alongside a heartfelt message for fans.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Serena Williams (@serenawilliams)

“There comes a time when we have to decide to move in a different direction,” she began the post.

“That time is always hard when you love something so much. Jean Kittson's departing swipe at Ronnie

Comedian Jean Kittson has spoken out against her teammate, former Block star Ronnie Caceres, and his tasteless behaviour after she was fired from Celebrity Apprentice Australia.

Kittson said she was “disappointed” that Caceres made a joke that she had dementia in front of several business executives from software company MYOB during her final challenge as the project manager.

“Did you get that? Do you know how to spell that, MYOB?” he asked her. After continuing to speak over her, he joked, “Sorry, she’s got dementia.”

“I didn’t like what happened in the last task with Ronnie,” she said in an exclusive interview with Nine.

“It was disappointing, because before that I hadn’t really seen that side. He really doesn’t have to do that.”

Though Caceres later apologised for his comments and said he was being a “smart a**e”, he went on to admit to the cameras that he was “going to say anything and do anything in my power not to get fired”.

Kittson pointed out that his behaviour was part of a larger issue of how people are treated as they age.

“There’s a storyline that goes… you end up in the over 60s and you’re done for, life’s over,” the 67-year-old said.

“The older you get, the less heard you are, the less seen you are. The correct way to clean your jeans without washing them

It’s a situation we’re all familiar with. You buy a new pair of jeans that fit like a dream and hug you in all the right places … until you decide to throw it in the wash.

In comes the disappointment as your trusty denim just doesn’t feel the same way anymore. But there’s a simple solution to this complicated situation – just don’t wash your jeans.

It may seem like a crazy concept, but Levi’s CEO and President Chip Bergh says to never throw your jeans in the wash, and when the king of denim gives an order, you follow it.

Speaking to CNN, Bergh said, “If you talk to real denim aficionados, they will all agree you should never put your jeans in the wash.

“I spot clean my jeans when they need to be washed. Worst care, I hand wash my jeans. And I do it myself. I mean I love my jeans, and I take good care of them.”

John Reid, managing director at clothing retailer Garment Quarter agrees with Bergh, saying his theory makes sense.

“Washing your denim jeans can alter the make-up of the material itself, and in fact, your favourite pair of jeans don’t need to be washed as frequently as you may think,” he tells Yahoo UK.

“The sheer amount of water that they are exposed to in a washing machine can be the culprit for affecting the look and colour of the denim by fading over time.”

So, when it comes to jeans, how do you clean them? Here are some nifty ways to keep your jeans looking as good as new.

1. Spot clean them

If you happen to squirt tomato sauce or chocolate on your light wash jeans, Reid says spot cleaning is the best way to remove unwanted stains.

“Keep your designer jeans in top condition by ‘spot cleaning’ any stains by using a toothbrush and a mixture of water with a gentle detergent. Doing this will not only reduce the risk of fading the dye, but you’ll also be helping the environment by reducing your water usage.”

2. Freeze them

Your freezer isn’t only for leftovers – it’s also to keep your jeans looking new while making sure they’re hygienic.

“Fold the jeans and place inside an airtight freezer bag before putting them in the freezer overnight and any bacteria will be killed by the cold temperatures,” Reid advises.

3. Hand wash them

Sometimes, there really is no other option but to use good ol’ water to clean your jeans thoroughly. When that’s the case, Bergh said to use your hands and a bit of cold water to get them looking fresh.

“Or hop in the shower with them on and soak them down and rinse them off – I do that too,” he said.

Do you have any nifty hacks when it comes to washing your jeans? The harsh verdict of Roger Federer's new ad for comfy jeans: "Hideously bad"

Roger Federer may be one of the greatest tennis players of all time, but the athlete has been stung by harsh criticism for his acting skills, after appearing in a clothing advertisement as part of his $US300 million sponsorship deal.

Starring in an ad for Japanese clothing company Uniqlo, Federer has been criticised for his “hideously bad” acting as he tries his best to promote a pair of jeans.

The ad shows the 20-time Grand Slam winner playing Bach on the piano as he issues life advice to those watching.

“My time off the court is just as important as my time on, because tennis is just the beginning of my story,” he says.

“I’m just getting started.

“My life. My Jeans. Authentic jeans with all-day comfort.”

Australian advertising magazine B&T reviewed the ad, complete with the headline: “Double fault! Tennis ace Roger Federer stars in hideously bad Uniqlo ad”.

The review claimed the TV spot was “truly awful” due to Federer’s acting.

“It’s unclear who the agency is that’s behind this rather awful ad, however, a spokesperson for the brand has described the spot as a visual story of the tennis champion ‘enjoying life at home in jeans’, wrote B&T.

And they weren’t the only ones that were unhappy, as Branding in Asia said the ad was “less than inspiring”.

“We’re ranking this quite low on the inspiration scale, and let’s be honest, Federer’s acting could use a bit more passion,” wrote the site.

Matt Butler, from UK’s Writing for iNews, said the ad was not a good look for the 37-year-old.

“Poor Roger Federer. The man widely regarded as the world’s greatest tennis player in history is only seven months into his deal with clothing giants Uniqlo and they have already made him look an absolute plum,” wrote Butler.

“The Swiss player is no stranger to toe-curling advertising campaigns, of course. We are of course talking about the man who donned a ghastly, preppy cardigan or an off-white blazer to wear on his centre-court walk-ons during Wimbledon in the Noughties, because Nike told him to.

“But his latest foray into salesmanship raises the face-palm bar way, way higher than a garment which combines technologically advanced fabric and large, easy-to-close buttons.”

After ending his partnership with Nike after almost 20 years, the tennis champion signed on to a 10-year contract with Uniqlo late last year.

Federer, who is now the face of the brand, will still be working with the Japanese fashion retailer even after his career ends.

What do you think about Roger's acting in the ad? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.

Comedian Jean Kittson reveals the taboo family topic she tackles with humour

The topic of dying isn’t often met with laughter, but for comedian Jean Kittson, comedy is often the best way to talk about taboo subjects.

The comedian admitted, “As a dinner conversation, dying is not what anyone wants to talk about. They’re happy to talk about holidays, yes. Reality TV, oh yeah. You know, food allergies. Menopause, even. But not dying. La la la la la la la.”

Jean added, “I hate to break it to you, but we’re all gonna die. We might as well talk about dying. Anyway, isn’t the conversation easier when we all have something in common?”

In support of National Palliative Care Week, Jean recently recorded an intimate video, sharing her honest and candid thoughts on the importance of having a conversation about death and palliative care with loved ones.

“I think humour can be used as a great tool to talk about taboo subjects. I don’t mean you use it to make light of death and dying, but I think comedy and humour is important in opening the conversation,” says Jean.

82% of Australians feel that talking about their own death and dying is important, but when it comes down to it, most people don’t actually have the conversation.

The Australian Government Department of Health aims to raise awareness and understanding about palliative care in the Australian community.

In 2016, there were 3.7 million Australians aged 65, and that number is expected to grow.

By 2056, it is projected there will be 8.7 million older Australians, and by 2096, 12.8 million people will be aged 65 years and over.

With Australia’s ageing population, it’s essential that people talk to their friends and loved ones about their end-of-life care wishes.

“As you get older, you realise that conversations about death and dying are more important. It’s a hard conversation to have because it’s a downer, but it needn’t be. You can have fun and it’s a good way to open up these conversations,” Jean said.

“Talking about death and dying with your loved ones means you won't have any regrets and that awful guilt that can come when you think you could have done more or you could have done something differently. So, it's just out there in the open and everyone's honest and it's such a relief.”

And for Jean, there are several items on her checklist when it comes to planning for her end-of-life care.

“I’d love a concierge by my bed just getting my every wish, doing whatever I want, making sure I’m happy,” Jean shared.

“I want music from the ‘60s and ‘70s, probably a bit of classical. I don’t want any rainforest or meditation music. No music that I get while I’m having a facial or being waxed,” she continued.

“I want a huge bed with lots of pillows so when I’m dying, I want everyone to lie down with me.”

For more information on palliative and end-of-life care and how to begin having the conversation visit: health.gov.au/palliativecare

How to choose the perfect pair of jeans for your body shape

For many of us, finding the right pair of jeans is one of the most difficult fashion issues around. Depending on the jeans and our own body shape, denim is often too long, too short, too loose or too tight! Add to that the bewildering number of leg lengths, cuts and materials and it is no wonder that many of us dread the idea of trying on new jeans in the changing rooms.

So, in order to find the perfect pair of jeans, take a look at the following useful tips – they will help you to figure out how to choose the perfect pair of jeans no matter what your age or body shape!

Match your body type

Finding jeans that fit is first and foremost about your body shape. For some women, length is the issue, while in others it can be their curves or a lack of definition in the waist area. However, never sacrifice comfort. It is virtually impossible to look and feel confident wearing jeans if you can’t move, bend or stretch, or if you are in any way uncomfortable.

Consider stretch

Modern jeans come in many different styles, and many now incorporate stretchy materials, which can be a real bonus in those places where you need a little help. Look for jeans that will move and flex with you as needed and which get back into shape easily once you take them off. You may need to spend a little more on a good pair, but it is certainly worth it.

If in doubt, go dark

There was a time when all jeans were the same blue denim colour. Nowadays, you will find jeans in every shade of blue under the sun, plus white, black, khaki, beige… If this is too much choice for you and you are struggling with which colour to go for, remember that dark colours are more practical, more forgiving, and often more stylish than lighter colours. They are also easy to dress up as well as down, making them one of the most versatile items in your wardrobe.

Accentuate the positive

Of course, to find the perfect fit you need to know what your “problem areas” are. You are not alone, we all have them! But rather than focusing on the negative, experiment with jeans that show off your good points. Do you have great ankles? Then try cropped or 7/8 jeans that will show them off. Do you have curves? Then why not show them off with some great curve-embracing jeans, rather than hiding in something shapeless.

Forget labels

Remember that with jeans, fit and comfort are much more important than brands. You will feel better knowing you look good in your jeans, rather than knowing that you are wearing an expensive, branded pair that leaves something to be desired in the fit. Experiment with different styles and makes and once you have found the ideal pair of jeans that make you feel amazing – do the clever thing and buy another pair!

If you are still looking for those perfect jeans, shop at Jeanswest where you will find a great range of denim for all ages, personalities, sizes and styles. As well as jeans, you can also find stylish tops, tees, jackets, skirts, dresses and accessories there, plus a complete menswear range and some of the best maternity wear around for any daughters or granddaughters that might be expecting.

7 secrets to finding the most flattering pair of jeans

When you think about the cost per wear of your jeans, you can see why it pays to invest in a good pair. But it’s not enough to just go out and buy a well-known brand of jeans and expect them to be the perfect fit.

There are a lot of elements that are important to take into consideration when choosing the best denim for your body shape.

1. Allow for some movement

It’s not a great option to have 100 per cent cotton jeans as they don’t have enough ‘give’. Go for jeans with a little movement (usually known as elastane) and this will also help with the fit, as they won’t be so tight on the waistband.

2. Forget the zips to reduce a belly

If you want to flatten your stomach, go for jeans without a front zip. Instead, find some with a higher stretchy waistband that you can just cover with your top.

3. Be mindful of faded colours

It’s common to find that jeans have patches that are lighter than others. It’s best to avoid any that have faded space in your problem areas, as this will draw the eye to them. Same goes with rips and tears – less is more.

4. Go for less fiddly bits

Flaps, sequins, dangly bits – all of these add bulk to your jeans, making the area where they are placed (usually waist or butt) look bigger. Keep things clean and simple to downplay any areas you are worried about.

5. Try them on with heels

Jeans always look better with heels on, so it’s important to try them on with your favourite shoes. Heels make your legs and butt appear more toned, which is always a good thing.

6. When in doubt, choose boot cut

If you’re not sure where to start, reach for the boot cut jeans. These suit most shapes, and unlike some slim fitting jeans they are quite flattering for nearly everybody.

7. Double up when you’re sure

Found a pair you adore? Why not buy two pairs – say one dark, one light? Then you don’t have to head back to the shop too soon.

What are your tips and tricks for finding a flattering pair of jeans? Let us know in the comments below.

The reason why there’s a tiny pocket in your jeans

It's long been the black hole of mankind's favourite bottoms.

A place where you can store minuscule items – spare coins, chewed gum, tiny wrappers - only to never retrieve them unless you have fingers with the circumference of a match stick.

However, it turns out that the pointless-looking pocket on a pair of jeans does in fact have a purpose.

It all stems back to the 1800s, when denim jeans first arrived on the scene and wearers needed a place to stash their – wait for it – pocket watches.

Yes, that small space was designed to keep timepieces safe from getting smashed during the day's activities.

The issue came to the forefront of fashion quandaries this week after a Quora thread asking the very same question was rediscovered.

"To keep [the pocket watches] from getting broken, Levi's introduced this small pocket where they could keep their watch," wrote the knowledgeable Nitin Achdev on the forum.

Levi's backed up the fact in 2014, including the thinking behind the small storage space in a feature about oft-forgotten pant parts.

"The first blue jeans had four pockets – only one in back and, in the front, two plus the small, watch pocket," the brand revealed.

"Originally included as protection for pocket watches, thus the name, this extra pouch has served many functions, evident in its many titles: frontier pocket, condom pocket, coin pocket, match pocket and ticket pocket, to name a few.

"Not only is the pocket extremely useful for holding tiny trinkets, it is also is loved by denim heads for the faded and worn nature it takes on over time."

So there you have it folks, now you can strut around feeling like a real jeans genius.

First appeared on Stuff.co.nz

Related links:

The most popular perfumes that defined a decade

100 years of wedding dress styles in 3 minutes

5 tips for dressing for a summer holiday
