"What do you say?" TV host's heartbreaking parenting plea

An Aussie TV host has shared a heartfelt plea for advice after revealing that his 12-year-old daughter has been bullied at school.

Barry Du Bois, co-host of The Living Room, shared an emotional post on Instagram admitting he is struggling to help Arabella with the bullying issue, and asked other parents for advice.

“I just watched my little girl walk out the gate of our home, a place where I know she is safe and feels a sense of security and belonging,” Barry said.

“She is heading to a place that doesn’t offer that same security, her school. As a parent, I’m supposed to protect and guide her through difficult times, but this morning, I am lost.”

“Yesterday, Arabella came home from school claiming she was sick,” he continued. "This isn’t the first time it has happened. She wasn’t actually sick but is instead being bullied again.”

Barry then asked for help from his followers on how to help his daughter, asking, “What do you say to a child when you’ve already said, ‘Don’t let them upset you. Just keep being kind. You are not the horrible things they say’.”

“She said, ‘I don’t want to be special; I just want to be liked’,” the TV star added before revealing he felt “weak, angry, confused and a little fearful”.

The touching post encouraged some of his famous friends to share their own stories of helping their kids deal with bullying.

“My mate sent his daughter to Jiu Jitsu after being bullied. She fell in love with it and gained another level of confidence,” wrote The Bachelor Australia star Tim Robards.

“Sometimes you’ve just got to go up to the parents and say, ‘your kid bullies mine’,” added Married At First Sight’s Ryan Gallagher.

“What I have is not curable”: Barry Du Bois on how he wants his children to remember him

He’s been open about living with terminal cancer since he was first diagnosed in 2010, and now Barry Du Bois has shared his thoughts regarding his children.

The host of The Living Room said that he doesn’t want his illness to be how his children remember him after he passes away.

The 59-year-old spoke to Australian Men’s Health and revealed that his memories of his own father are overwhelmingly positive, and he hopes his kids experience the same.

“I have these incredible memories of the strength of my father, and I was very worried that my own children would remember me as a weak person who was a burden on their mother,” he said.

And while he goes through life with an optimistic attitude, he admits that he’s concerned about his kids having a negative impression of him as they grow older.

After undergoing treatment for cancer last year, Barry is now on the path of rebuilding his strength, but he still understands that he has limits.

He’s tried to build muscle in the past, but he has now realised that a person’s strength isn’t just about how they look externally.

Now, he’s shifted his perspective, and focuses more on mental health while slowly building his physical strength.

“What I have is not curable. But I’m in a great place. I’m as good as someone can be who has multiple myeloma,” he said.

He credits his recovery to good nutrition, plenty of fluids, regular exercise, sunshine and a positive outlook on life.

Barry will celebrate his 60th birthday next year, and he strongly believes that if he looks after himself, his children won’t look back on his final years with sadness and pity.

“What I want is for my children to be able to tell their children one day that their dad was a powerful man,” he said.

Scroll through the gallery above to see Barry Du Bois with his children.

“We’re a family”: Barry Du Bois pays tribute to his The Living Room co-stars

It was an emotional moment for The Living Room crew when they won the Logie for Most Popular Lifestyle Program.

Last October, co-presenter Barry Du Bois revealed on the show that his cancer had returned. What followed was several gruelling months of chemotherapy as Barry fought hard to beat the disease and return to his beloved TV family. He did it, and the win for The Living Room was just the cherry on top.

Backstage at the Logies, Barry got emotional as he described co-star Amanda Keller as "everything" to him.

"She means an incredible amount to me," Barry told TV Week. "We are a family. She's been my soulmate from the second we met."

Barry said he's had "amazing support" from his three co-presenters.

"It's brought us even closer together," he said.

Amanda believes Barry's story has "touched so many people".

"There's a lot of love for this show," she said. "And much of that is to do with him.

"When Barry shared that his cancer had returned and what treatment lay ahead, I don't think I've ever seen television as real as that.

"That touched a lot of people's hearts, because he wanted to help and inspire other people. His work is amazing."

Dr Chris Brown said Barry's health battle had shaped their year on The Living Room.

"It's all we think about, to be honest," Chris said. "The show comes second to Barry and his health."

Miguel Maestre explained that the four co-hosts try to be together as much as they can.

"There's a lot of fake things out there in this world – not just in TV, but in life," he pointed out. "But we are great friends."

Barry said a lot of families across Australia had been "struck by disease".

"We hope it makes them feel a bit better to realise that, even though we're up on that stage getting these things [awards], we have ups and downs too."

But on the night of the Logies, Barry said he was feeling "fantastic".

"Whenever I'm with these guys, I feel great," he smiled. "I have the best support in the world."

Barry Du Bois shares the important life lessons his father taught him

Barry Du Bois has revealed the greatest lessons his father ever taught him, important life lessons that have helped him fight the hardest battle of his life: cancer.

The Living Room presenter announced in October last year that after six years his cancer has returned for a second time.

Since then, the father-of-two has undergone a bone marrow retrieval, stem cell transplant and chemo that saw him in isolation for 21 days at St Vincent’s Hospital.

It’s been a gruelling several months for Barry, but his positivity in the face of such hardship has inspired countless fans on his Facebook page, where he shares updates on his cancer journey.

But Barry attributes his fighting attitude to a loving upbringing and important lessons that his dad taught him a long time ago.

“There are lessons I learned when growing up that have helped me enormously,” he told tendaily.

“He taught me everything. He taught me not to be scared, to be prepared for a fight. But not to be scared.”

Today, it’s part of his DNA, Barry says. And while he’s angry about his health, he refuses to be cowered by it.

“I was angry. Yes, I suppose I was also scared … but there’s no return on being scared. There’s no return on that investment. So I refuse to invest in it,” he says.

Barry Du Bois: How he faced his toughest night

Barry Du Bois shocked Australia last year when he announced his cancer had retuned during an episode of The Living Room, which left his co-hosts clearly distraught.

Ahead of the release of his new book Life Force, the television presenter has explained his decision to be so candid and public about his health battle.

In an extract released to the press, Du Bois explained how much mental strength was needed to cope with the devastating diagnosis.

“The power of the mind is incredible. If you come across three people in a row that give you the look that you’re not going to make it’ll, you start to lose faith,” Du Bois wrote.

“So we decided that we’d share my diagnoses with the people who watched the show. We thought if we could take them with us on my journey, it might give others inspiration.

“And there it was.”

Du Bois explained how they cut crew down to its essentials.

“We removed the studio audience. How would we play it? We didn’t know what to do so we were just ourselves. We adlibbed. I told my story; Amanda, Chris and Miguel reacted. What came out of it was empowering to me. It was the first time most of the cameramen had heard the story. There were lots of tears,” he wrote.

“But there was also belief. The amount of times I heard, ‘You’ll do it, Baz’. It was like when my dad told me I was the best at everything. If everyone tells you can do it, you probably can.”

What are your thoughts? Are you going to read Life Force?

Barry Du Bois "wildly upset" over council nightmare

Shortly after moving into his Bondi Beach home five-and-a-half-years-ago, the first thing TV presenter and builder Barry Du Bois had on his mind was to attach a children’s swing to a fig tree outside.

Little did he know the impact the swing would have on the community, bringing kids and parents together.

The building expert for Channel Ten show The Living Room, also took the time to build a bench for mothers to sit on while their children line up for a turn on the swing.

Barry has since kept a photo diary of his twin children, Arabella and Bennet, on the swing at different stages of their life.

A post shared by Barry Du Bois. (@baz_dubois) on Apr 21, 2016 at 2:33am PDT

However, Barry recently received a red card in his letter from a Waverley Council ranger that said “complaints have been received in relation to damage to tree and swing that is not approved".

Barry, who is battling an aggressive blood cancer, was told to take the swing down immediately or the council would do it the next day.

“My children and hundreds of other children have been happy on that swing for years,” said Barry.

“When I came home from work the next day it was gone. Already, everyone at the kids’ school is asking, 'Where’s the swing?'”

The children of Barry’s neighbours, who used the swing every day, are particularly “devastated”. The little girl keeps telling her mum to “get Barry to fix it!”

“It’s a neighbourhood attraction,” said neighbour Carrie Fahey.

“Everyone’s been texting each other, ‘The swing just got chopped down!’ Even my friend across the road can’t believe it – and he doesn’t even have kids.”

Barry is “wildly upset” with the council’s decision.

“What is the issue here?” he said. “Is it a public liability issue? Because if the slippery pavers outside the post office on Hall Street aren’t an issue; if all the trip hazards here aren’t an issue; why is this swing?

“I’m just a member of the community who’s built a swing to draw children and community together and to make something beautiful.

“We’re surrounded by many things that are wrong but the only thing that gets the red card is the swing. Are you kidding?”

The Waverley Councils media liaison Jilea Morrad told the Wentworth Courier that the swing was removed because it was “not approved, not to Australian standards, could damage the tree, not in an appropriate location and is a risk to the public."

Morrad added, “The swing is a public liability issue, all play equipment in public spaces must be to Australian standards.”

Morrad said if the council becomes aware of other swings in nature strips “they will be removed as well”.

However, there is still a glimmer of hope as last year Waverley councillors voted to save a swing that had been pulled down in Bronte after 1300 signatures were collected.

Barry Du Bois breaks down during emotional reunion with Amanda Keller

He is battling cancer for a second time and Barry Du Bois remained defiant as he revealed it “can’t be my time” during an emotional reunion with his The Living Room co-host Amanda Keller.

The 57-year-old hugged his friend tightly as he held back tears and confessed that he was “really angry” when he found out in October last year that after six years in remission his cancer had returned.

“I didn't know what to expect physically. Amanda Keller breaks down speaking to Barry Du Bois about his cancer battle

Barry Du Bois has shared an emotional account about his battle with cancer since his plasmacytoma myeloma returned in October of last year.

Speaking to his longtime friend Amanda Keller on the Amanda and Jonesy’s radio show, Barry and Amanda held back tears when his “karaoke song” Drive by Alan Jackson was played to introduce him.

“Buggar, I didn’t want to cry,” Amanda remarked.

“You got me with that song,” Barry replied.

But the 57-year-old father-of-two was upbeat and positive about his progress so far.

“Last night was the best night I’ve had for a while. I feel great. I’ve had a rough week, there’s no doubt about it, and, yeah, it’s been a struggle, but overall I feel pretty good,” he said.

“I feel like my progress is more advanced than where the doctor’s want it, which I’m excited about. I’ve said from the outset, you know, I was going to do everything possible to make this the best journey it can be and the results of that are starting to pay-off, so I’m excited.”

Barry explained he underwent four rounds of chemo and stem cell and bone marrow retrieval at the end of last year and is now going through the hardest part of the battle.

“It takes about ten days for you to get to your weakest, which is about today for me, my white blood cells are at zero at the moment. But it also takes ten days for the stem cells to start seeding, so I’m hoping today they’re going to start seeding, or growing, in my body ... I’m going to have another couple of bad days, while I’m at this very low point, and then, the trick is I’ll start bouncing back,” he said.

Du Bois was first diagnosed with plasmacytoma myeloma in 2011 and made the devastating announcement in October last year that his cancer had returned.

Amanda began tearing up when speaking about the return of the Living Room, which they both co-host, telling Barry, “I just miss you, I just miss you.”

Barry replied: “Let’s not be upset, let’s be really positive, I’m excited about the show tonight.”

The pair even tentatively spoke about when he might return to the show.

“It might be a month or so yet, I am weak there’s no doubt about it. But still stronger than the average bloke they reckon,” Barry said.

He praised the support he’s been receiving from the public throughout this ordeal.

“It’s just incredible, it’s an incredible inspiration for me and a real uplifting experience for me as well,” he said.

Barry Du Bois shares update on cancer battle

He emotionally revealed to viewers in October that his cancer had returned after six years in remission, and now lovable TV personality Barry Du Bois has shared an update on his cancer battle.

The Living Room host took to Facebook yesterday to sing the praises of the team at St Vincent’s Hospital in Sydney and share an update with his fans.

Posting a picture of himself in hospital, Barry wrote: “The team at St Vincents are amazing but I am bored silly. Being away from the ones you love is the toughest part of this illness. I really hope by sharing my journey I encourage us all to think about our lifestyle choices, healthy diet a little more exercise, mindfulness and self belief. A balanced whole life. #health #diet #mindfulness”

The 57-year-old announced on The Living Room that his cancer has returned in October.

“It seems that my cancer has come back, reasonably aggressively now I have what is regarded as multiple myeloma. We’ve got a cancer in my body that has created several tumours right through my body,” Barry said, surrounded by colleagues Amanda Keller, Dr Chris Brown and Miguel Maestre.

“Now I see an upside to that, this is just another fight for me that I am quite comfortable I am going to win.”

“It’s going to be a tough gig and what’s given me strength ... is I know how much support I have from you guys and how much support we get as a show and as a TV family.”

Last month, he revealed to Osher Günsberg on his podcast that he was trying to shield his children – five-year-old twins, Arabella and Bennet – from the frightening battle ahead.

“When I got the news again this time around, I was so angry. I was pissed off at myself, at the world, at everything,” he said.

“Because six years ago when I got it, we didn’t have children and I would have said to you I’ve had the best life anyone could have. If this is my day, it’s my day. But when you have children, yeah I’m not ready to go yet.”

“How do you explain to a five-year-old who thinks that Peppa Pig is a real person that Daddy is going through something really bad?” he questioned.

“Why does a five-year-old need to know that? Daddy is exercising every day, Daddy is meditating every day and Daddy cuddles me every day.”

Slow internet? Here’s how to test your internet speed

Lisa Du is director of ReadyTechGo, a service that helps people gain the confidence and skills to embrace modern technology.

Slow internet is one of my biggest frustrations, especially when I am trying to watch Netflix, and my movie continuously stops!

There are several things that may affect your internet speed, such as:

Device Connection - Whether your are using a wired internet connection or a wireless (wifi) connection

Faulty Devices - If you have a faulty or outdated device, this can slow down the speed of your internet for all your other devices

Time of Day/Network Congestion - The time of day can affect your speed. Think of your internet connection like travelling on a freeway. At peak hour, there are more cars trying to get through!

Connection Type - Whether you are using broadband connection or Mobile connection (through your 3G or 4G smartphone)

If you are experiencing slow internet speeds, you should connect your internet service provider and let them know what speed you are currently getting. They can make several changes on their end to help improve the speed.

Here's how you can do a speed test before calling your Internet Service Provider:

Speed test

1. Open an internet browser (Google Chrome, Safari, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Edge or Mozilla Firefox) and visit the website: http://beta.speedtest.net/

2. When the site has loaded, click on the GO button

3. The speed test will commence...

4. Wait for the results of both the Download and Upload speed!.

These are the results you can provide to your internet provider when they ask you what "speed your internet is".

I did this Speed Test in our Richmond office, and there is big difference to my internet speed at home. At home, I get about 1.24 Mbps... Frustrating!
