US school teacher sacked after reading Aussie book to class

A US primary school teacher is forced to resign or terminate her contract after reading an Aussie book to her class.

Katie Rinderle, from Cobb County, Georgia wanted to teach her fifth graders about inclusion and acceptance through Aussie author Scott Stuart’s book, My Shadow is Purple.

The book itself explores this through the theme of “gender beyond the binary” and the story of a child who neither identifies as a boy or girl.

Rinderle discussed the main message behind the book before asking them to reflect and write their own poem, which has been praised by some parents.

However, not all of them were happy about Rinderle’s initiative and one parent filed a complaint which led to an investigation.

Rinderle was sacked for violating the Divisive Concepts law, which disallows teachers from educating about divisive concepts and was given the notice of termination on June 6.

Investigators reportedly deemed the book to be “pornographic” material which included “inappropriate topics”.

Stuart, the author of the book, responded to the situation and shared his “disgust” on TikTok.

“A teacher’s just been fired for reading one of my books,” he said in the video.

“(She) had parents reaching out saying that this kind of lesson was something that they wanted in the class. This is a teacher who gets phenomenal feedback from the principal, the students, the parents.

“Her teaching is described as transformative and key to the school’s success,” he defended Rinderle.

“This whole thing just really goes to show how much more interested the school system in the US is in playing politics than they are in educating kids,” he added

“It’s gross. It’s disgusting.”.

Cobb County School District has responded to the situation in a statement to FOX 5 and claimed that any action taken was “appropriate considering the entirety of the teacher’s behaviour and history”.

“The District remains committed to strictly enforcing all Board policy, and the law,” the statement concluded.

Rinderle will face a termination hearing in August.

Images: TikTok

You and I have been friends for a long, long, long time,” Meldrum said in a pre-recorded message for the rock and roll diva.

He referenced parties she’d attended with him, joking: “I won’t say a word, everyone behaved … Bulls**t.”

He added: “Do yourself a favour and have a great night.”

Tina was visibly moved by the tribute, telling This Is Your Life host Melissa Doyle: “There’s a soul, there’s a spirit. Waleed Aly goes head-to-head with mayor calling for IS brides’ citizenships to be revoked

Waleed Aly has gone head-to-head with a mayor from western Sydney who slammed the government’s decision to resettle the repatriated brides and their children in the area.

The Project co-host was speaking to disappointed Fairfield Mayor Frank Carbone, who questioned why western Sydney was the “dumping ground” for the women and their children.

Mr Carbone explained that members of the community have gotten in touch with him expressing deep concerns over the decision, particularly those who escaped Syria from the terrorist IS group.

“I don't think he [the prime minister] has taken into account the tens of thousands of refugees that fled their home, had their homes burnt back in Syria, have lost their loved ones, have watched a lot of their families be beheaded and burnt, and have come and resettled in Western Sydney,” Mr Carbone began.

He argued that Syrians who helped the Australian army fight IS terrorists were more “Australian citizens than anyone else” before he was cut off by Waleed.

“Legally they're not, Australian citizens are a different category. We have obligations to Australian citizens that we don't have to refugees,” he pointed out.

Mr Carbone did not accept the excuse, saying the IS brides committed treason under the “Commonwealth criminal code section 80” and should have their citizenships revoked.

“Treason is when you leave your country and you aide and abet, doesn't matter if you're baking a cake or scones and assisting ISIS, you're committing treason,” he said.

“Under that act, you can have your citizenship revoked.”

Waleed then pointed out that the brides would have to be convicted first to have their citizenship revoked and “that hasn’t happened”.

“You're talking a lot about kids here, in fact mostly about kids. Would you leave kids in camps overseas when they are Australian citizens?” he asked.

Mr Carbone did not hesitate when he continued addressing the people’s concerns as to why Western Sydney was the dumping ground.

“Why is it Western Sydney? Why is it Western Sydney when we have tens of thousands of people that fled ISIS?” he said.

“Australia is a big country, they [ISIS families] don't necessarily have to be in Western Sydney.”

His comments come just a day after Liverpool Mayor Ned Mannoun, and Campbelltown Mayor George Greiss made the same accusation about their area being the dumping ground.

Australia repatriated four women and their 13 children after being stuck in al-Hol and al-Roj camps in the northeastern Syria region since 2019.

It is expected more women and children will follow in the next few weeks.

Images: The Project

"Stone the crows": Who made Ray "Alf" Meagher cry

Home and Away legend Ray Meagher has broken down on Channel Seven's This Is Your Life after a series of emotional tributes.

The 78-year-old actor was discussing his life and career at Summer Bay when his past co-stars surprised him with endless praise for his role as Alf.

The first tribute came from Chris Hemsworth, who thanked Ray in a pre-recorded message for his kindness and support during Chris's time on Home and Away.

“Ray Meagher, godfather of Australian television, Australian icon, a flaming legend, my hero. Mate, what can I say?” he began.

“I remember very vividly the first time I walked onto a Home and Away set, the first time I met you. I was teaming with excitement and nerves — mostly about meeting you, the man, the myth, the legend."

“The moment arrived. I remember the doors busting open, and there you were down the end of the hallway, silhouetted by the sun, bathed in glorious light.

“We locked eyes, we got closer. I took a big deep breath and I thought, ‘He’s probably not a hugger’. I lifted my hand…and dived off into the costume department because I had lost my nerve.”

The audience chuckled at the Thor star’s hilarious recollection, but his next admission left Ray fighting back tears.

“Sure enough, you came up to me and you said, ‘Chris, wonderful to meet you. You’re gonna do great here’. You were kind, genuine and supportive, and you’ve remained that through my entire career. Thank you so much buddy, I love you. You’re a dear friend.”

Already overcome with emotion, Ray was presented with another surprise.

Kate Ritchie, who played the role of Sally Fletcher on Home and Away for 20 years alongside Ray, walked onto the set and embraced her co-star.

The pair watched a set of Home and Away scenes from 1990-2008, finishing with their on-screen goodbye at Palm Beach.

“Ray is really so much of what I learned as a person, but also as a performer,” she began, before grabbing Ray’s hand.

“And for both of us, we’ve played those characters for such a long time, that it is inevitable there is so much of us within them."

“When I watch that footage…I actually see two friends. He’s watched me grow from a girl into a woman, and he’s really proud of me. So I’m glad I’ve made you proud, thank you."

The Aussie icon told his former co-star that he’s still proud of her to this day, and his words "still stand".

“You mean a lot to me Ray, you know that,” Kate added, causing Ray to wipe his tears away with a tissue.

Ray has played Alf Stewart since 1988 and currently holds the Guinness World Record for the longest-serving actor in an Australian series.

His appearance on This Is Your Life moved many Home and Away fans online, with floods of people sharing their gratitude for the veteran actor.

"So emotional, tears are flowing. Congratulations Ray!! What a fantastic life!! You’re a wonderful man and a great actor,” one wrote on social media.

“Crying happy tears. It was so lovely to see Ray (Alf) get recognised like this. ‘Stone the crow’ as he would say. I hope he keeps going on the show,” a second added.

Karl blows up over bringing IS brides back to Australia

Karl Stefanovic has lashed out at Bill Shorten after it was announced that Islamic State brides and their children stranded in Syria will be brought back to Australia.

More than a dozen families in the war torn Middle Eastern country underwent “risk assessments” following a secret ASIO mission in order to bring them home.

The secret mission was conducted at the al-Roj refugee camp in northeast Syria near the Iraqi border where 16 Australian women and 42 children have been for three-and-a-half years since the fall of Islamic State (IS) in 2019.

A furious Karl said that “no way” should the families be brought back to Australia after they willingly joined their husbands in fighting the terrorist group.

He questioned former Labor leader Bill Shorten as to why the wives and their children are being allowed to come back to Australia when the women went willingly.

“I mean a lot of these kids are under six of course and they didn't have any say in what happened to them, but it is a national security matter and there is probably not much more I can add,” Mr Shorten said.

Karl quizzed Mr Shorten saying that it seemed that he was against the operation to which he quickly disagreed.

“No not at all…I don't have sympathy for some of those blokes who went over there, no sympathy at all, but if you're a kid under six let's not pretend anyone really asked their permission,” Mr Shorten argued.

“I can see both points of view.

“I just want to reassure people it's about national security first, they'll be the considerations, a lot of these are kids are under six so I'm not going to pretend you just give up on Australian citizens under six.”

Karl however stood by his decision saying that the families made a decision and it's not up to Australia to help them.

“I think if you make a decision to go overseas with someone and fight for Islamic State, you're making the decision as a family, there's no way in the world you should be allowed to come back here,” he said.

As part of the operation, the women and children will be taken to another third world country in the Middle East before coming back to Australia.

Images: Facebook

George Floyd deserved a better life

George Perry Floyd, Jr. was murdered when Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin sank his knee into Floyd’s neck for nine minutes and 29 seconds. Video footage went viral within hours, helping to inspire protests against racism and police violence that lasted all the American summer of 2020.

But while the size of the protests was unprecedented, the activism of that summer had deep roots. Journalists across the United States and indeed the world, focused attention on that history of protest, as they had done during the 2014 police killings of Eric Garner, choked to death in New York, and Michael Brown, shot in Ferguson, Missouri.

At the Washington Post, reporters and researchers devoted significant resources to a six-part series, George Floyd’s America. Now, two of those journalists, Robert Samuels and Toluse Olorunnipa, have expanded the work into a book: His Name Is George Floyd: One Man’s Life and the Struggle for Racial Justice.

When Floyd was born in 1973, 200,000 people were incarcerated in the US. By the time of his death, as Samuels and Olorunnipa point out, that number exceeded 2 million. Rates of incarceration increase with political conservatism and the increased rates of poverty, income inequality and unemployment that accompany that conservatism. Extensive investment in prisons, jails and police forces has created a self-perpetuating system that evolves by producing the very criminals it locks up.

This life-and-times biography poignantly depicts the mechanisms by which African Americans, especially male children and adults, become disproportionately the fodder for that system. A long history of racism, it might be said, funnelled George Floyd to prison.

The grandson of sharecroppers

Floyd’s two parents were both born to sharecroppers in North Carolina. The cycle of poverty in which they were trapped was not of their own making. Black Americans have been prevented from building wealth from the moment slavery ended.

Floyd’s great-great-grandfather, for example, who was born into slavery in 1857, amassed land worth $US30,000 in 1920, but his white neighbours stole it from him by a mixture of fraud underpinned by the threat of violence. That tale is absolutely typical for a majority of Black families in the US South.

The knock-on effects have been intensified by government policies that meant for generations, Black Americans had fewer opportunities for education; earned less even for the same work; and were prevented from buying property that would build wealth over generations.

Desperate for a better life for her three children, Floyd’s mother uprooted them to Houston, Texas, when Floyd was four. There, they lived in public housing in the segregated Third Ward.

Government policies that requisitioned homes from Black residents elsewhere in Houston had forced them into this section of the city. In the Cuney Homes development, known as “the Bricks,” even today the median income is US$15,538, well under half the national average.

Floyd attended the local Jack Yates Senior High School, opened in 1926 when education was segregated by race and never the equal of other Houston schools catering to white children. As Floyd grew to 193 centimetres tall, he learned to offset the alarm that his size and colour induced in people.

He became self-deprecating and deliberately easy-going, charming people across generations everywhere he went. Excelling at football, he secured entry to college.

But Floyd’s dreams of playing pro football were stymied by his academic achievements. Never good at tests, Floyd fell behind by middle school and struggled to graduate high school. There were just not the resources in the schools to make up for living in poverty in an overcrowded flat with the responsibilities of caring for relatives.

After four years at two colleges, Floyd dropped out and returned to Houston. Not long after, he was arrested for the first time for selling drugs.

Samuels and Olorunnipa do an extremely good job of showing that at every node along the passage toward being turned into fodder for the prison-industrial complex, Floyd’s chance of escape was significantly less than that of a white man of the same age. Reading how Floyd’s options narrowed, it was impossible not to share his frustration and despair.

Forensic exposé of injustice

Quotas for arrests meant police sought the “low-hanging fruit” of petty drug dealing done on the streets. Misconduct charges for these police officers are common: the cop who arrested Floyd in 1997 for selling drugs was sacked in 2002 after being charged with theft and hampering arrest. The officer who arrested Floyd in 2004 was “later accused of falsifying charges in hundreds of drug cases, including the one involving Floyd.”

Chauvin himself had faced 29 charges of misconduct and internal investigations prior to murdering Floyd. (Only 18 appear on the city’s police internal affairs records.) But because records of “decertification” are patchy, such “wandering” officers can often get themselves rehired.

The officers can stay unaccountable by targeting impoverished men who, unable to afford lawyers, are more likely to accept plea deals. Floyd was never tried by jury; he rather accepted eight plea deals.

He knew that even if he got to court, the decision was unlikely to be positive because the state of Texas does not provide public defenders. Rather, the court pays for a private lawyer to defend those who can’t afford their own representation. Judges in Harris County, where Houston is located, more often than not will appoint lawyers who had donated to their election campaigns.

In 2007, police arrested Floyd for a violent assault on evidence provided by a dubious photo ID process. (It has since been improved.) Facing up to 40 years of prison, a reluctant Floyd accepted a plea deal for five.

Claustrophobia made Floyd’s time in prison difficult, and yet he discovered that none of the mental health, drug addiction, or education programs included in legislation such as the notorious 1994 Crime Bill, which sloshed billions of dollars into prison building, were available. As the authors point out, it was only after the opioid crisis hit white communities that such funds were expended. In short, whereas policymakers declared crack cocaine a crime problem, they saw opiate addictions, more commonly associated with white people, as an epidemic or public health emergency.

The man responsible for prosecuting the case against Derek Chauvin, Jerry Blackwell, knew well the racism inherent at every level of what we uncritically call “the criminal justice system.”

Blackwell anticipated the defence would claim that Floyd’s drug use or some physical anomaly was the reason he had died. He therefore required an independent medical examiner review the coronial findings into Floyd’s death.

That person, and the examiner who worked for the Floyd family in the civil case against the city of Minneapolis (which the city settled before trial for a record $US27 million), both questioned whether the autopsy had been conducted correctly. Specifically, they doubted whether the incisions made on Floyd’s body were sufficient to ascertain the cause of death. And, indeed, the defence claimed that Floyd’s drug use and a supposedly enlarged heart had contributed to his death.

This was not unique; as the authors report, in 2021 researchers found evidence that medical examiners “had misclassified or covered up nearly 17,000 deaths that involved police between 1980 and 2018”.

All this detail might make the book sound dull, but the research is woven lightly through the account of Floyd’s life so as to maintain momentum. We learn too about Floyd’s family, friends, girlfriends, and his young daughter Gianna. The authors bring to life Floyd’s ability to take people as he found them, underpinned by a deep Christian faith in God.

Activism

The final third of the book, which focuses on events after Floyd’s death, is also gripping. Even as we know the outcome, the twists and turns in the criminal case against Chauvin make for heart-in-the-mouth reading. Chauvin was convicted of murder and manslaughter and is serving a 22-and-a-half year sentence. And in early July a federal judge sentenced Chauvin to 21 years in prison for violating George Floyd’s civil rights – the sentence will be served concurrently.)

Even more striking is the depiction of the bravery of protestors in Minneapolis and of Floyd’s family members, especially his brother, Philonise Floyd, as they seized an opportunity they never wanted – as spokespeople for justice.

Joined by the civil rights veterans, the Reverends Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton, Philonise campaigned hard for federal legislation to reform policing. Republican opposition to the hardest-hitting sections of the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act, introduced to Congress in February 2021 by Rep. Karen Bass, meant the bill foundered – and has still not been passed.

Unlike all the earlier sections of the book, the activism around police and legislative reform is not given quite the context it deserves. Although Samuels and Olorunnipa interviewed 400 people for their book, activists who have long campaigned against police brutality and for the dismantling of the entire criminal justice system in favour of a society built on equal distribution of resources, such as Angela Davis and Ruthie Wilson Gilmore, do not appear.

Nor is there much comment on the efficacy of prior efforts to reform the criminal justice system via legislation. Banning choke-holds, for instance, will not end police murders when Black lives are still not regarded as mattering as much as those of white people.

This criticism aside, His Name is George Floyd is a monumental achievement – a work of activism in itself.

Bringing Floyd vividly to life, it makes an impassioned and persuasive plea for the dignity and preciousness of life. The book’s cover deliberately evokes the posters held aloft during the 1968 workers’ strike in Memphis, Tennessee (when Martin Luther King, Jr. was killed), that proclaimed “I Am a Man.”

George Floyd was a man, too, who deserved a better life.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

Images: Penguin

Turia Pitt hits back at partner accusing her of sabotage

Turia Pitt has hit back at her Celebrity Apprentice Australia partner who accused her of trying to sabotage him and the competition.

The motivational speaker was part of Team Collaborate with Ronnie Caceres who was constantly telling her to “pull her weight in” and saying he would not hire her to work for him.

The pair were taken to the Boardroom during Sunday night’s where things went to a whole different level.

Turia felt that her and Ronnie’s time was up on Celebrity Apprentice Australia when she was accused of trying to get him fired.

"To say that I'm trying to sabotage an event is absurd and it's preposterous,” Turia said.

"I know in the real world I wouldn't have you working for me because I'd be looking over my back all the time," Ronnie snapped back.

This then led to Turia to talk about the exchange between her and Ronnie on her podcast Turia Pitt is Hard Work.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Turia (@turiapitt)

"This whole experience has had me reflecting on a lot of big things, right? Inside Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Esposito's 4-month marriage

Years before the movie career of Bradley Cooper erupted and he sealed his fate as a Hollywood star, he was previously married to fellow actress Jennifer Esposito for just four months.

Although the relationship between the two ended over 12 years ago, Esposito, now 45, commented on an Instagram picture of Cooper and Lady Gaga getting a little too close during their super-charged and intimate performance of Shallow from A Star is Born.

The post by actor and comedian David Spade captioned the image, “Is there any chance these 2 aren’t ------?”

The actress responded to the post, writing, “Ha.”

The cheeky caption and humoured response had an adverse reaction from fans, who were curious as to why she chose to comment.

Here’s a brief timeline of the short-lived relationship between the massive Hollywood actor and NCIS actress, Esposito.

The pair were not open about their relationship

Before the couple tied the knot in December 2006, Esposito refused to confirm if she was seeing Cooper in January of that year.

When asked at the InStyle Golden Globes party if the pair were an item, she responded coyly, “I’m not answering that.”

Just a few months after they were first spotted together, their relationship had moved to the next level and confirmation of their engagement hit the tabloids in October 2006.

Their relationship was short-lived

The couple's sweet wedding took place in the south of France in what was described as a small affair. And although both Cooper and Esposito are said to have enjoyed their time together, just four months later they announced their split.

In 2011, Cooper was a guest on Howard Stern's radio show and touched on the failed relationship.

"It was just something that happened. The good thing is, we both realized it […] Sometimes you just realize it," Cooper said, according to Us Magazine. "It just wasn't right. It's interesting […] things happen!"

She had a few interesting words for her “master manipulator ex”

Esposito released her first memoir titled Jennifer’s Way: My Journey with Celiac Disease – What Doctors Don’t Tell You and How You Can Learn to Live Again in 2014.

In the book, she divulged into a failed relationship that “hit an all-time low,” without actually mentioning who the person she shared the relationship with was.

“He was funny, smart cocky, arrogant and a master manipulator,” the actress wrote. “I didn’t necessarily find him that attractive, but I figured that I could enjoy his sense of humour and nonsense for a while.

"I should have noticed the red flags from the beginning – actually, they were more like an entire marching band squad of red flags – but I ignored them because, honestly, I didn't think the relationship was really going to go anywhere," she wrote.

She also added, “We had fun, but he also had a mean, cold side. His personality could flip on a dime.”

Although there was speculation about Cooper being the “master manipulator,” the actress never confirmed this and even went as far to say she would not speak further on the matter in a statement.

“This book is about my journey with celiac disease and only that,” she said at the time. “To refer to anything other than the subject at hand or to make this book about anything else is an insult to me and this disease that plagues so many.”

New relationships

Since their break up, both Cooper and Esposito have moved on and pursued other relationships. The actor has been dating model Irina Shayk since 2015 and they share a two-year-old daughter together, and in 2014 the actress married British model Louis Dowler, who famously dated Kate Winslet.

Adding fuel to rumours that Lady Gaga and Cooper could be more than just friends, a representative for the A Star is Born actress confirmed she had split with her fiancé, Christian Carino.

Scroll through the gallery above to see a few sweet photos of Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Esposito while they were together in happier times during 2006 and 2007.

Did you know about Bradley Cooper's short-lived marriage to Jennifer Esposito? Tell us in the comments below.

What is the NDIS and am I eligible?

Marissa Sandler is the CEO and co-founder of Careseekers. Previously a social justice lawyer and researcher for over 15 years, Marissa is passionate about helping people live with dignity and finding innovative solutions to problems.

NDIS… What does it stand for again? It’s the National Disability Insurance Scheme. And we promise, it’s so much more than just an acronym.

What is the NDIS?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is how the Government will deliver support to people with permanent and significant disabilities across Australia.

It is a significant change from how the Government provided support to people with disabilities pre-July 2013 (although not everyone will be able to able to access the NDIS from 2013. See below for more information on the roll out).

The aim of the NDIS is to provide individuals, with a permanent and significant disability with the reasonable and necessary supports they need to live an ordinary life and achieve their goals.

The NDIS will fund supports that assist people with disabilities to:

Access mainstream services and supports e.g. medical services, housing.

Access community services and supports that are available to everyone in the community e.g. libraries, community groups.

Maintain informal support arrangements i.e. the support received from family and friends.

The NDIS may pay for supports that are reasonable and necessary for the person with a disability to live an ordinary life and achieve their goals.

Under the NDIS each eligible person receives an individual amount of funding and is able to exercise greater choice and control over how they use this funding to purchase their supports.

The choice and control an individual has over how their funding is spent will depend on whether their funding is self, plan or NDIA managed. It is possible to have a plan that is partially self and partially plan managed.

What is the difference between NDIA, plan and self-managed NDIS funding?

NDIA managed – the NDIA will manage your NDIS funding. You are only able to use NDIS registered providers, to provide your supports.

Plan managed – gives you more control over how you spend your funding as you can use both registered and unregistered support providers. However, you don’t deal with the financial or administrative tasks like making payment - a NDIS registered plan manager will take care of that.

Self-managed – gives you the greatest control over how you spend your funding. You can use registered and unregistered support providers and can directly employ support workers. You will also be responsible for the financial and administrative side of your plan. You will need to create a specific bank account for this purpose.

Am I eligible for NDIS funding?

First, check that the NDIS is available in your area. The NDIS started in July 2013 in a number of trial sites around Australia. It is being introduced Australia wide in stages from 1 July 2016. The goal is to have it rolled out within three years.

To be eligible for the NDIS an individual must:

be under 65 years of age

be an Australian citizen, permanent visa holder or hold a protected special category visa and

meet the disability or early need requirements. For more information on the NDIS eligibility requirements click here.

The NDIS is not means tested and does not impact income support such as the Disability Support Pension and Carers Allowance. Even if you do not currently receive Government funded disability support you may be eligible for the NDIS. The NDIA, which is the national agency running the NDIS, will determine if you are eligible for the NIDS.

Can I use my NDIS funding with Careseekers?

If you are self or plan managed you will be able to access care and support workers from Careseekers. This means you will be able to:

choose the right care worker for you

get care and support at the exact times you want it

arrange your support worker from the comfort of your own home

watch your funding go further as you connect to affordable care and support workers

directly employ your support workers (self-managed only)

Positive psychology: What it is and how to use it

Peggy Kern is a Senior Lecturer in Positive Psychology at the University of Melbourne.

Many people have probably heard the term “positive psychology”, but know little about what it means in practice. Positive psychology aims to find ways to make life better for people, and ensure they’re the most mentally healthy person they can be.

Officially established in 1998, positive psychology is a relative new field. It has quickly become popular among researchers, and blogs about happiness and well-being are now commonplace.

Positive psychology suggests that getting rid of sickness, disability, depression, crime and the other problems of life is important, but not enough. People should be able to not just survive life, but to thrive and enjoy it. Positive interventions are being brought into schools and workplaces to help people feel good and be more productive.

Emphasis on preventing mental health problems

Mental health problems are increasing in Australia. Around 20 per cent of Australia’s population is diagnosed with a mental illness, while depression is one of the biggest causes of disability around the world.

The typical approach for dealing with mental illness is to wait until a person shows signs of disorder, then provide treatment. This is like taking your car to the shop when it stops working. But in the same way a lot of car troubles can be avoided through regular maintenance, positive psychology posits that by proactively taking care of one’s mental health, mental illness can be prevented, or at least be less severe.

By focusing on building a person’s internal strengths and helping people recognise and connect with resources around them, such as friends and family, they are better able to deal with challenges and enjoy life as a whole.

One way this prevention model is being put into practice is by teaching students about well-being, resilience, character strengths, emotions, social relationships, and similar skills.

Education about trauma nurtures well-being for students from challenging backgrounds. By developing healthy habits early, we hope students will be more resilient in the future – although the long-term impact of such programs is unknown. Some work also applies the ideas of positive psychology to clinical settings to help treat depression.

Similarly, by regularly engaging in positive activities, you can help build mental fitness and keep yourself mentally healthy.

Some misconceptions

A major misconception is that positive psychology is positive thinking: that if you think good thoughts, they will come about. Although positive psychology suggests being optimistic about the future is beneficial, good things will only happen if you actively do things to make them come about. It’s what people actually do that matters, not simply what they think.

While positive psychology focuses a lot on building positive emotions, such as joy, excitement, contentment and calmness, it doesn’t deny the reality of negative emotions and experiences. Emotions are part of what makes us human. However, there is often a natural tendency to focus too much on the negatives of life, so there is value in shifting that focus more to the positive side.

Positive psychology is different from self-help in that it uses techniques based on rigorous psychological research. Different interventions are tested to see whether or not they have an impact.

However, positive psychology is not a silver bullet. Many of the interventions were developed and tested by Americans. These approaches might not work well for Australians or for people from other cultures and backgrounds.

We’re still trying to find out what works best, for whom, and under what conditions. There’s still a lot we don’t know. So beware of claims about “proven ways” to be happy.

How to practise it yourself

If you want to learn how to practise positive psychology yourself, numerous activities and tools are available.

It can be useful to get a sense of your own well-being as a starting point. I’ve developed a survey that measures your emotions, engagement in life, relationships with others, sense of meaning and purpose, feelings of accomplishment, and physical health. These indicators can give you insight into your well-being in different facets of your life.

Based on this assessment, the survey also offers some activities you can do to start building your well-being. Just like a medical checkup, it can point to areas you might want to work on.

Knowing and using your strengths also relates to greater well-being. The Values in Action survey can identify your character strengths, such as creativity, curiosity, leadership, kindness and social intelligence.

You can also actively cultivate the ability to more consistently shift your focus and perspective in a positive direction. For example, ending each day by noting a few things that went well during the day creates a habit of noticing and appreciating good things that happen. Regularly practising this may help counteract natural biases to ruminate on what went wrong, or worry about tomorrow.

You can also intentionally add more positive emotions to your everyday life by ensuring that, each day, you take part in simple activities that make you feel good.

Cultivating and nurturing positive relationships is essential for your mental health and well-being. It’s important to build and maintain good relationships in as many facets of your life as possible: this includes your relationships with family members, friends and coworkers.

Making it a habit to thank others for things they do can help build good relationships. Another idea is to do kind acts for others. Such activities will help them feel good, be a better friend to you, and help develop a strong support network.

Positive psychology can benefit people at different stages on the mental health spectrum, but if you are really struggling it’s important to get help. Talk to friends, family or your doctor.

Written by Peggy Kern.
