Stowaway who hid in plane wheel identified

A man who was found stowing away in the wheel well of a plane in Amsterdam has been identified.

Dutch police found the man on a cargo flight that had flown from Johannesburg to Amsterdam, a roughly 11 hour flight. The flight is believed to have made one stop, in Nairobi. At the time, Royal Dutch Military Police spokeswoman Joanna Helmonds told the AFP, "The man was found alive in the nose wheel section of the plane and was taken to hospital in a stable condition. It is quite remarkable that the man is still alive.”

Police have identified the man as a 22-year-old Kenyan who plans to seek asylum in the Netherlands. He is conscious and able to communicate. A spokesperson for the Dutch military police told the BBC, “It is expected he will apply for asylum in the Netherlands, but his medical treatment is the priority at the moment."

Stowing away in the wheel section of a plane is dangerous; according to the US Federal Aviation Administration, from 1947 to February 2020, 128 people around the world attempted it, and more than 75% of them died.

A particularly famous case was that of the man who fell out of the sky while stowing away on a flight to London from Nairobi. He fell from Kenya Airways flight KQ 100, landing in the southwest London neighbourhood of Clapham.

In the past five years, seven stowaways have been discovered on planes in the Netherlands, but only two of them survived the journey. Several of the attempts involved nationals from Nigeria and Kenya.

In 1970, Sydney teenager Keith Sapsford made headlines around the world when he fell 60 metres from the wheel well of a Japan Airlines flight soon after take off at Sydney’s Kingsford Smith Airport. Tragically, the 14-year-old, whose parents said he had an innate curiosity for travel, died on impact.

Image: Jun Xu

Why Olivia Newton-John hid her third cancer diagnosis from fans

Olivia Newton-John said she is grateful for the "gift of extra time" as she continues to battle cancer.

In a new interview with America's TODAY show, Newton-John revealed that she had been hiding a third cancer diagnosis in 2013 from fans. The 70-year-old singer and actress previously went public with her first breast cancer diagnosis in 1992 and her last in 2018.

“I just decided I wanted to go through it myself.” @olivianj explains to @nmoralesnbc why she chose to keep her third time fighting cancer to herself and the treatments she’s using to manage her cancer pic.twitter.com/bZo0hEvJvz
— TODAY (@TODAYshow) 8 March 2019

"Because of the speculation," Newton-John said. "I just decided I wanted to go through it myself. I don't know, it was just a decision that I'd keep it to myself that time."

Earlier this year, Newton-John took to social media to address the rumours about her health, which emerged after her latest cancer diagnosis was announced. In a video, she said, "Rumours of my death have been greatly exaggerated."

Happy New Year! Here’s to a wonderful 2019! Love & light, Olivia pic.twitter.com/1Nd2jIcRb1
— Olivia Newton-John (@olivianj) 3 January 2019

The Grease star said of the video, "They were telling me I was dying, and I thought, 'I don't feel like it, I'm feeling pretty good'.

"But you know, rumours start, then it gets out of control and I decided, 'No, I'm going to come out and talk about it', because I have many friends and family around the world and I can’t call everyone, so I need to let them know that I'm OK."

Despite having three cancer diagnoses within the past three decades, Newton-John has remained optimistic.

"We're all going to die," she said. "I mean, that's probably the hardest thing to accept as a human being, that we know that. So I kind of consider I've had a gift of extra time. I've lost people younger than me, so I'm very grateful. I'm 70, and I've had the most amazing life."

In an interview with Channel Seven’s Sunday Night last year, the four-time Grammy award winner revealed that she used to be “scared” about her health issues.

"I'd be lying if I said I never go there," said Newton-John. "There are moments, I'm human. If I allowed myself to go there, I could easily create that big fear. But my husband's always there, and he's there to support me.

"I believe I will win over it … That's my goal."

"I felt so sick": Carrie Bickmore's pregnancy struggle

When Carrie Bickmore revealed on social media yesterday that she was pregnant with her third child, the happy news came as a shock to many, including her co-workers.

On Thursday, Carrie appeared in her first episode of The Project since making the announcement and her colleagues were desperate to know how she concealed her pregnancy from viewers – and them!

“I want to know: It's obvious [your bump] today, but it hasn't been obvious before, so what have you been doing?" Hamish Macdonald asked.

Carrie’s growing bump was noticeable for the first time as she donned a tight gold dress.

She explained: “Haven't you noticed? I've been slowly lowering my chair and sitting like this [Carrie lowers her chair slightly so her bump is beneath the desk].”

“But it was getting to the point where I was just going to be like [Carrie lowers her chair to minimum height, her head peeking above the desk] 'Hi!'”

Finally understanding her clever trickery, Hamish confessed: “Every night this week they [producers] have been saying, 'Hamish, can you put your chair down a bit?’”

Peter Helliar was also surprised too and admitted: “Since you’ve announced it though, it [the bump] has gone pop!”

Earlier that day, Carrie also revealed another one of her tactics to keep the news a secret to Tommy Little on her HIT Network radio show.

“It's funny, I've been wearing lots of jackets and jumpers!” she said.

When speaking to Pete, Carrie explained that she appreciated not having to hide her secret anymore.

A post shared by Carrie Bickmore (@bickmorecarrie) on Jun 18, 2018 at 12:56am PDT

She said: “My stomach muscles have been like, 'Ah! Finally!' I've been sucking in!

“It's nice to feel better too. I've been sick as a dog! I'm surprised you haven't noticed me dry-retching next to you?

Taking a deep breath, she admitted: “It's nice to finally relax.”

Later in the show, Carrie recalled talking to her obstetrician when she first suspected she was pregnant.

“I was feeling so sick, I said to my obstetrician, 'There is definitely another one in there. You have to find it! I feel so sick.’”

On her radio show, Carrie revealed how difficult her first trimester had been.

“Until this week, I felt so sick – 24 hours a day, like I mean so sick,” she said.

“I didn’t even think I had the energy to work out ... to even get my head around what was happening.

“[Being] hungry made me feel sick, eating has made me feel sick, being awake has made me feel sick, sleeping has made me feel sick, coffee has made me feel sick, everything has made me feel sick.”

Luckily, Carrie said it was getting better: “I’m feeling 50 per cent better, which weirdly feels like completely better.”

Unlike her other two pregnancies, Carrie will not find out the sex of the baby until it’s born.

“I don’t know, I found out with Ollie, found out with Evie, and I’m thinking maybe I just let it go for this one, let it be a surprise,” she said.

Carrie had her three-year-old daughter Evie with partner Chris Walker, while her 11-year-old son Oliver was with her late husband Greg Lange, who died from brain cancer.

The secret Barack Obama hid from Michelle during Buckingham Palace visit

A new book by former President Barack Obama’s national security advisor has revealed a few secrets from Barack and Michelle Obama’s meeting with Queen Elizabeth during their visit to Buckingham Palace in May 2011.

Ben Rhodes in The World As It Is: A Memoir of the Obama White House reveals that despite feeling in awe of the Queen, Barack favourably compared the sovereign to his beloved grandmother, whom he nicknamed “Toot.”

“I really love the queen,” then-President Obama told Rhodes, according to the book. “She’s just like Toot, my grandmother. Courteous. Straightforward. All about what she thinks. She doesn’t suffer fools.”

The Obamas’ visit to Buckingham Palace also included an odd rodent drama.

According to the book, Barack was in a room going over his speech with his aides as Michelle was getting ready to sleep in another room when, suddenly, a butler appeared.

“Mr. President, pardon me,” the butler said. “There’s a mouse.”

“Don’t tell the first lady,” Barack quickly replied.

“We’ll try to catch it, sir.”

“Just don’t tell the First Lady,” Barack repeated, according to the book.

And when Rhodes jokingly said to Barack that maybe the monarchy “really is a dying empire,” Obama laughed and said: “No, they’ve still got a lot going on. Did you see the bling on the queen?”

He added, looking around the “ornate” room, “I’m just a few years away from being in the State Senate and living in a condo.”

Divorce lawyers share the most shocking things couples hid from each other

You never know quite what’s going on in the lives of those around you, do you? Often when we hear of a friend or acquaintance getting divorced, the first response is, “why?” Chances are, you’ll get the generic “irreconcilable differences” excuse, but when you delve deeper, who knows what you could find.

Well, wonder no more. A recent “Ask Reddit” thread has offered us nosy people a look into some of the most bizarre things couples have kept from each other from the lawyers closest to the cases, and some of the revelations are utterly unbelievable.

1. A whole lot of property

“The husband in a very high stakes divorce managed to hide two apartment complexes, an ocean-front penthouse in a very expensive city, and an offshore oil rig that were held in two offshore companies that the wife did not know about. It only came out very recently, about two decades later when husband died and left some of that property to their two sons (who were able to see the property histories).” – andyjams

2. Lottery winnings

“Not a lawyer, but my husband's uncle (they're close to the same age) was going through a divorce. His wife had just packed up her stuff and their kids and moved out one day while he was at work. Come to find out, a few weeks before she left, she'd won a $5000 a week for life lottery ticket. And thought she could divorce him without splitting her winnings. That didn't work out very well for her.” – jader88

3. A massive fortune

“In Australia, a divorcing husband hid $10+ million by making an over payment to the tax office, auditors thought it was a tax payment but six months later it was refunded with base interest rate. Since then auditors have caught on to this.” – Syidd

4. No marriage to begin with

“Guy doesn't want to break up with his girlfriend, she keeps nagging him about marriage but he doesn't want to marry her. So he tells her they'll have a 'destination wedding' on a tropical island with a local ceremony and it will be very romantic. And they do. Except he just hired some resort staff to pretend to officiate a marriage ceremony and no marriage contract was ever drawn up. Guy dies years later, 'wife' finds out she was never married and is not in the will.” – Mtlguy

5. Two other families

“East coast husband had a listed income of $1.5 million. Cheated on wife 10 times. Almost at the end of the divorce process it was learned that husband had another family in Seattle, a different name and another $14 million salary in tech. His vested stock options under the second identity were worth $214 million. How was he discovered living the double life? Seattle wife posted a picture on Facebook and tagged him with his west coast name. East coast wife similarly posted a photograph of him – the facial recognition assigned him a possible name – his west coast name. The two wives got in touch. But wait, there's more! He has a wife and family in the Czech Republic and moved there to avoid family court – and is currently being pursued for extradition.” – Cold_Zero

Wow. The lengths people will go to just to hold onto their fortune! Tell us in the comments below, what’s most bizarre divorce story you’ve ever heard?

Princess Diana once hid out at Kurt Russell’s home to escape paparazzi

During her short lifetime, Princess Diana was constantly hounded by the paparazzi. As we’re all too aware of now, this harassment caused her a great deal of stress, but what has only been recently made public knowledge, Diana would frequently hide out in Kurt Russell’s Colorado home.

At the royal premiere of Backdraft in London in 1991, Diana confided in Kurt about how difficult the paparazzi had become. Kurt offered up his 70-acre estate he shares with Goldie Hawn so that Princess Diana and her sons, William and Harry, could have "a nice getaway."

During an appearance on The Late Late Show earlier this month, Kurt spoke about how he and Hawn wound up lending their home to Princess Diana in 1995.

"Years later [Duchess of York Sarah Ferguson], who Goldie knows, worked it out," Kurt said. "I guess Diana wanted to go with the boys and so they were welcome, and they came and stayed for 10 days at the ranch, and they had a good time.”

At the time, Goldie's publicist denied the royal family were staying at their home, but there had been sightings of a then 13-year-old Prince William and 10-year-old Prince Harry enjoying the great outdoors in Aspen.

While Kurt and Goldie weren't staying at the property during Diana's visit, the star said at least one person bonded with the princess.

"Our housekeeper Bonnie became very close with her and every Christmas she'd get a nice Christmas card from Diana," he said.

Related links:

The cast of Grease: Where are they now?

Top 10 classic horror movies of all-time

The most hilarious Bond gadgets ever
