"That is NOT a goanna": Family stumbles upon metre-long croc in their chicken coop

A Central Queensland family got the croc-shock of their lives when what they thought was a seemingly innocent goanna having a nap in their chicken coop turned out to be a rather laid-back, metre-long reptile houseguest.

The unsuspecting family from Cape Hillsborough stumbled upon the scaly interloper during their morning routine and, upon closer inspection, they realised that their "goanna" was actually a pint-sized crocodile with a hunger for adventure and perhaps a penchant for farm-fresh eggs.

They immediately called upon the services of the wildlife officers from the Department of Environment, Science and Innovation (DESI) to handle the unexpected guest.

DESI staff, armed with their best PVC tube, swooped in to relocate the confused crocodile to a more suitable venue – a facility in Mackay. There, the croc will wait patiently until wildlife officers can find it a new home, possibly at a licensed farm or zoo where it can continue its culinary escapades under professional supervision.

Senior Wildlife Officer Jane Burns commented on the incident, saying, "While it isn't unusual to see crocs around Mackay, it is unusual to find one in someone's backyard." Well, Jane, they say every family has a skeleton in the closet, but in Mackay, it seems they might have a croc in the coop.

This peculiar episode follows hot on the heels of recent reports of a crocodile deciding to test its high jump skills, attempting to land in a fisherman's tinnie at Jane Creek in nearby St Helen's Beach. Witnesses say the crocodile executed a perfect swan dive, narrowly avoiding a career in aquatic acrobatics.

As the good people of Mackay navigate this unexpected croc invasion, wildlife authorities are reminding everyone to be "Crocwise in Croc Country". Tips include expecting crocs in all waterways (yes, even in your neighbour's kiddie pool), obeying warning signs (they're not just fancy decorations), and refraining from using canoes and kayaks (apparently, crocs have a thing for watercraft).

So, the next time you suspect a goanna is admiring your chicken coop, remember – it might just be a crocodile in disguise, ready for a culinary adventure and a chance at stardom.

Images: DISA

Waitress drags huge goanna from Aussie restaurant

When a huge goanna made a surprise appearance at a winery restaurant in Australia, a French waitress quickly took control of the situation.

On Sunday, Samia Lila was serving at the packed restaurant in southern New South Wales when a customer grabbed her hand and pointed at the unwelcome scaly visitor crawling across the floor.

"I looked at it and thought it was a dog at first," Lila said. "But then I realised it was a goanna."

About 180cm long, it went under one of the tables and the customers sitting there started to scream.

"Everyone was screaming, so I started screaming too," Lila said.

The 25-year-old put a chair in its path to try and buy time to think of what to do while stopping it from reaching customers.

Running out of options, the best she could think of was grabbing it by its tail and dragging it outside across the veranda and away from everyone – including past a woman who had by then jumped on her chair.

"I was just like a kid; I thought 'I want to do it, I want to do it, I know it's bad, but it was getting close to customers,’" Ms Lila said. "I wasn't scared, I like reptiles so was a bit excited."

She has been in Australia since November and it was only the second time she had seen a goanna, after scaring one away from the winery's vines last week.

A video of Lila's brave actions was posted on the Mimosa Wines Facebook page and was viewed nearly 200,000 times in two days.

The Normandy resident said she did not expect the video to go viral at all. Due to her actions, she has now been labelled the "Goanna Girl".

She will be working at Mimosa Winery – and protecting it from goannas – under her Working Holiday Visa until June or July before she continues her travels.

Written by Albert McKnight. Brave currawong protects nest from giant goanna

Greg Tanos was riding his mountain bike in Sydney’s Royal National Park when he was startled by and breath takingly large goanna, which he described as “at least 1.5 metres long, and probably closer to two metres”.

The monster lizard wasn’t at all concerned by the avid nature watcher though, as he was distracted by preparing to raid a currawong’s nest. The currawong, however, was much more vigilant.

During the next half hour, Greg captured an intense stand-off between hunter and prey.

"The [currawong] would not give up – it kept flying around the goanna and hassling it," he said.

"The [currawong] put up a big fight and eventually won the battle”.

Mr Tannos posted the video on his website which details his encounters with nature in Australia while he's out kayaking, mountain biking and diving.

Watch the fascinating footage in the video above. As the goanna gives up and retreats, Greg is able to get closer to him, and you can see just how imposing the size of the giant lizard is.

Have you ever caught any interesting animal behaviour on camera? Giant goanna spotted heading towards pub

A New South Wales resident, was amazed to discover a giant goanna heading towards his local watering hole on Wednesday evening.

William Baxter was sitting at the traffic lights when he spotted the large lizard.

William proceeded to snap a photograph of the unusual animal and then sent it to his partner Melissa Wilson who posted it on the Lost Pets in Newcastle, Hunter Valley and Surrounds Facebook page.

"Anyone able to get this big fellow away from the road? It's on the side of the main road at the lights that turn down towards the Lambton pub," she posted.

Melissa's message to alert residents the reptile was stalking the streets quickly went viral with more than 1,800 shares and 1,200 likes since it went up yesterday evening.

"When I got there a gentleman had pulled over because it was crossing Morehead Street trying to get to The Mark Hotel," Melissa told the Newcastle Herald.

"We called the Native Animal Trust Fund and their representative said she believed it was wild and from a bushland area. There was a whole heap of magpies nesting in the area and it was looking for eggs."

Melissa said she believed the reptile was returned to bushland and another woman, who was on the scene at the time the lizard was first sighted, commented on Melissa's post to tell concerned residents that the "wayward monitor is now contained".

This is not the first sighting of a giant goanna which has shocked NSW residents. In December last year a Thurgoona man was killing time in his shed when he came across a monster lizard in his backyard.

First appeared on Stuff.co.nz.

Related links:

Mature 5-year-old struggles with breaking up with kindy sweetheart

104-year-old twins share secret to longevity

Emu cools down under a sprinkler
