"I'm going rogue": Kochie gives away $3000 moments after quitting Sunrise

When Sunrise host of 21 years David ‘Kochie’ Koch announced that he would be parting ways with the popular breakfast TV show, it should have been safe to assume that that was the only shock in store for viewers.

However, Kochie had other ideas, making a bold - and generous - move, all while hinting that there was plenty more in store for his final two weeks at the helm with co-host Natalie Barr.

The two were running the segment known as Bill Barrel when things took a turn, with Kochie explaining how “the rising cost of living is putting pressure on Aussies right across the country”, and how the team over at Sunrise wanted to offer relief and support where they could.

“So,” Natalie added, “we are paying your bills.”

The pair proceeded to spin the barrel, before pulling out a sheet of paper with the name of their lucky recipient - Melanie Turner from Brisbane.

They were quick to get a delighted Melanie on the phone, and Kochie was all too eager to declare “congratulations, you’re this morning’s Bill Barrel winner!”

Melanie, of course, thanked them for the happy surprise, before Natalie asked just what it was that she needed to pay off.

“It’s my car rego,” Melanie said, “[it’s] due today, as a matter of fact.”

She then revealed that her bill came to a total of $520 - an amount she was immensely grateful to be receiving.

But that wasn’t the end of Melanie’s good fortune, with Natalie sharing “we’re feeling generous. Kochie’s feeling generous. He’s giving away cash today. We’re going to give you $1500 to help with that.”

The $1500 should have been the most Melanie could take home to help with her bill, as the competition’s own terms and conditions list the sum as the “total maximum prize value”, but fate - or one rogue TV presenter - had more in store.

Before Melanie had a chance to properly celebrate, Kochie cut in, declaring “I’ve only got two weeks to go. I’m going rogue. We’re going to do three grand.”

As laughter broke out across the studio, and Melanie struggled to find the words, Kochie reiterated the prize, assuring Natalie that he was sure - even as she noted that she had “someone in my ear”.

“I’m going to go rogue every day,” he continued, “for the next two weeks.”

Images: Sunrise / Seven

The Block bidder Adrian Portelli to give away $2.3 million waterfront mansion

After missing out on a new home, one of The Block’s bidders has announced he will be giving away a $2.3 million home in Queensland instead.

Adrian Portelli was thrust into the spotlight after the show’s recent season finale, amid accusations he placed “dummy bids” to ramp up the price of winning team Omar Slaimenkhel and Ozmand ‘Oz’ Abu Malik’s property.

The duo made a record-breaking $1.6 million on their house in Victoria’s Macedon Ranges, but came under scrutiny after they greeted Portelli by hugging him on the show and it emerged that the three were friends.

After Portelli engaged in a bidding war with veteran Block buyer Danny Wallis and came out unsuccessful, he didn’t bid on any of the other five homes offered on auction day, sparking the accusations of false bids.

While speculation has continued to grow, the 33-year-old property investor and car enthusiast has said he will be giving away a waterfront mansion in the Gold Coast’s Sanctuary Cove.

The property will be given away through Portelli’s promotions company, LMCT+, which offers giveaways of both houses and cars.

“We didn’t win The Block house to giveaway so we’ve found a replacement. At full price they are a bit pricey,” they wrote.

The offer is available while stocks last until next Tuesday in selected Woolies stores across the country.

Images: Woolworths / Facebook

I don't work, I get $120 a fortnight to look after my mum as a carer, my husband was made redundant two years ago… Forty grand to me is huge.”

A spokesperson for the Today show told News.com.au, Nine can only award money to a winner who is heard saying the correct sentence on air.

“We hope our viewers win each and every day and we know they are all deserving of the prize, but to ensure a fair competition we have to abide by the terms and conditions each time.

“Viewers have three dial rings to answer and must clearly say the words ‘I wake up with Today.’

“The hosts hear what the control room hears — if there is a slightly ropy phone connection and we don’t hear the words ‘I wake up with Today’, then we cannot award the money. The hosts heard A word sadly — that’s it … Had they heard the SENTENCE we would have loved Jenny to win the money.”

Have you ever won money from a TV or radio show?

How Oprah’s iconic car giveaway ended on a sour note

When Oprah Winfrey gave away cars to everyone in her studio audience, it went down in history as one of the most iconic moments in her TV career – that and Tom Cruise jumping on her couch.

Now, a podcast hosted by journalist Jenn White called Making Oprah: The Inside Story of a TV Revolution reveals that the car giveaway ended on a sour note for some of the recipients.

The podcast reveals that the idea for the car giveaways started with Winfrey’s best friend, Gayle King.

King sat next to an executive from the Pontiac car company on a flight and they started talking. After their chance meeting, Pontiac offered the show 25 cars for a giveaway.

However, the producers kept pushing until the manufacturer agreed to give a brand new G6 to every member of the studio audience.

The value of the 276 cars totalled US$7.7m (AU$9.84m).

Oprah was still hesitant about the giveaway as she wanted the recipients to be those who were actually in need of a new car.

“When we sat down and started to talk about the car giveaway, I asked, ‘How do we find people who really need cars?’ Because that would make it worth it to me ... that would give it a depth and an intention,” she recalled.

The show’s producers then started finding an audience who would be suitable for the giveaway without giving away the surprise. On the audience application they asked questions like, 'How do you get to work?' and 'How old is your car?'

“For the most part, the whole audience genuinely needed new cars, and that made it even more special,” said Terry Goulder, who was one of the senior producers.

The episode was the premiere of the 19th season and they needed ratings to kick off with a bang.

For the surprise to have the maximum impact, it relied on misdirecting the audience.

“The car giveaway is a surprise because they ‘fake it out’,” explained the podcast’s presenter Jenn White.

Oprah invited 11 teachers on stage who were all in desperate need of a new car and she announced that their “wildest dream” was coming true.

“The audience was all sitting back and observers at this stage, thinking, ‘Isn’t that nice for them, they got a brand-new car,’” said Oprah. “That was the fun of it.”

She then announced that a 12th car would be given away. Each member of the audience would receive a box and in one of those boxes would be the key to the car.

The audience erupted in joy and shock as they discovered that there was a key in every single box.

Producer Terry Goulder remembers that the audience was so “supercharged” he had made sure there were paramedics on site, in case someone had a heart attack.

The audience weren’t the only ones who were feeling the intense emotion in the room.

“My heart was pounding so hard ... because I was as excited for the people getting the cars, as the people were for getting the cars,” said Winfrey.

The iconic “you get a car” moment unfolded as screams erupted in the audience.

“I was screaming as loudly as I could because [the audience was] screaming so loud ... I was trying to be heard over what at this point was just happy chaos,” said Winfrey.

Producer Gina Sprehe remembers this moment as the highlight of her career.

“We didn’t know it would go that well ... it was just magical ... when you watch 276 people have total meltdowns, you’re just so happy for them. It’s so nice to see people that happy.”

Although lives were dramatically changed with the giveaway, unfortunately, there was a sour taste left with some after the euphoric feeling passed.

Terry Goulder believes that the moment of TV greatness backfired on them.

“It was really hard to produce shows after that, because all the audience wanted cars,” he said.

Producer Lisa Erspamer also saw a different side to the giveaway.

“It was devastating after, because ‘gift tax’ is a thing, and it’s always a complicated thing when you’re giving stuff away,” she said.

“But we paid for the sales tax and the registration for each car, and we told the audience after, if they didn’t want to have to pay a gift tax, they could actually take cash for the car.

“And because we didn’t pay the gift tax, people complained to the press, and that was devastating.”

White said in the podcast, “You can understand why some of the audience might be annoyed with getting a bill of up to $US7,000 ($8,900) depending on your tax bracket ... but you can also understand the producers looking at that and going, ‘We just gave you a car?’”

Erspamer continued, “We put our whole soul into this moment of television and with real intention to do something good, and so when people had a negative reaction, it like literally hurt our feelings."

She added, “You know, we’re people and it made us really sad.”

Controversy over Today’s $160,000 cash giveaway

Today show viewers have shared their doubts after the program gave away $160,000 last week.

In order for viewers to win the cash giveaway, they must answer their phones with the words “I wake up with Today”.

However, when Pauline answered the phone, the audio cut out at the vital moment when she answered the phone and the only word which viewers could hear was a broken “Today”.

Hosts of the show were quick to congratulate Pauline on her win but some viewers were suspicious of the viewer’s win.

Some claimed they heard the word “G’day” while others said the result was “rigged” because the breakfast show was desperate to see the jackpot go off.

The Channel Nine show responded to the backlash by explaining that the audio had briefly cut out because they were doing an outdoor broadcast.

“An independent auditor was in the control room during the call and verified that Pauline successfully answered the phone with the words ‘I wake up with Today’,” a Nine spokesman told news.com.au.

The show also posted on its Facebook page to explain the situation.

“For those asking, Pauline successfully answered the phone with the words ‘I wake up with Today’, despite the audio briefly cutting out on-air from our outside broadcast in Melbourne,” the post read.

Some viewers remained unconvinced.

“Your telling me in that very small delay, around 1 second, she said ‘I wake up with today’? I’m happy for Pauline. But sorry think this has been rigged big time. As stated on the show earlier this morning, you were desperate to give the cash way and I think just let the rules slide,” posted Terry McLoy.

“You need to clarify the audio, there were two rings then gday or similar. No space for I wake up with. Viewers aren’t stupid,” wrote Tanya Kilner.

Some viewers disagreed with the critics saying that it was a fair win.

“It was a live cross and if you listen carefully she was saying today obviously we didn’t get to hear the whole thing but the producers did ... well done to her and the rest of you need to get over yourselves,” said Dawn Pfeiler.

“You are all very sad people if you listen very carefully you hear her say today at the end not gidday so disappointing that you all want to take away her excitement,” posted Tracy Hopkins.

Earlier this year, Today’s former Block of Cash segment had trouble giving away $30,000 after the phone went unanswered 16 times.

Do you catch this moment on TV? Domino’s 10,001 free pizza giveaway leaves customers fuming

To celebrate the launch of its new premium range of pizzas, Domino’s Australia announced on Facebook it would be giving away 10,001 free pizzas to customers. All those interested had to do was head to the “10,001 Free Pizzas” tab on their Facebook page,

Unfortunately, it didn’t quite go to plan –and people were not happy. When customers attempted to click the link through to the free pizza offer, they were presented with a 404 error page.

“After 27 minutes of refreshing, I get various combinations of ‘This page is not published’ or ‘There has been an error’,” one social media user wrote. “The closest I got was ‘This item could not be rendered.’”

“Ok for Domino’s to say keep trying but how many different error messages can you get,” wrote another. “This is a total social media promotion fail.”

Dozens took to the page to slam the chain, saying, “We’ll never buy from you again,” and that they had “lost us as customers”.

A spokesperson today told news.com.au that the problems were due to unprecedented demand. “We do apologise that it took multiple attempts for some customers to receive their voucher,” they said. “Our fans are so hungry for our new menu, and free pizza, that they almost broke the internet. To the lucky 10,000 + 1, enjoy your free pizzas!”

The controversy comes just days after Domino’s backflipped on their decision to dump their classic margherita pizza from the menu.

Did you try to claim this offer yesterday?
