Buy now, pay later: Apple will now lend you money to keep you spending and expand its empire

<p>Apple has joined the thriving “buy now, pay later” industry, with a customised service called <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/video/2022/06/06/apple-announces-buy-now-pay-later-program-called-apple-pay-later.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Apple Pay Later</a>. The service was announced earlier this week at the 2022 Worldwide Developers Conference, and will initially be launched in the United States later <a href="https://www.macrumors.com/2022/06/07/apple-pay-later-purchases-installment-plan/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">this year</a>.</p> <p>Pay Later will be built into the Apple Wallet and eligible for use on any purchase made through Apple Pay. Customers will be able to split the cost of a purchase into four equal payments, with zero interest and fees, spread over a period of <a href="https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2022/jun/06/apple-redesigns-the-iphone-lock-screen-in-ios-16-at-wwdc" target="_blank" rel="noopener">four months</a>.</p> <p>To qualify, however, Apple will first do a <a href="https://www.zdnet.com/finance/banking/wwdc-2022-buy-now-pay-later-with-apples-new-wallet-feature/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">soft credit check</a> on users wanting to use the service. The technology behemoth <a href="https://www.apple.com/newsroom/2022/06/apple-unveils-new-ways-to-share-and-communicate-in-ios-16/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">claims</a> it has designed the feature with “users’ financial health in mind”.</p> <p>It’s likely Apple is trying to consolidate its foothold in the world of consumer finance, and increase its profitability. And consumers should be aware of the risks of using such a service.</p> <p><strong>Apple: the consumer darling</strong></p> <p>With the launch of Pay Later, Apple will be competing with many other similar fin-tech companies including PayPal, Block, Klarna and AfterPay – some of which saw their share prices <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-07-13/apple-goldman-plan-buy-now-pay-later-service-to-rival-paypal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fall</a> following Apple’s announcement.</p> <p>Apple will benefit from its huge market and brand power, with the capability to attract millions to its products and services. And with an acute focus on customer experience, Apple has managed to foster a community of evangelists. There’s no doubt the company is a <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/christinemoorman/2018/01/12/why-apple-is-still-a-great-marketer-and-what-you-can-learn/?sh=55e3c32c15bd" target="_blank" rel="noopener">consumer darling</a>.</p> <p>Moreover, Apple has established an ever-growing ecosystem in which users are encouraged to tap into Apple products and services as much, and as often, as possible – such as by making payments through their iPhone instead of a bank card.</p> <p>The tech giant provides ways to integrate once-separate computing capabilities into a phone or wristwatch – while keeping the <a href="https://www.forbes.com/sites/christinemoorman/2018/01/12/why-apple-is-still-a-great-marketer-and-what-you-can-learn/?sh=7c61018615bd" target="_blank" rel="noopener">consumer’s experience</a> in focus. Pay Later enhances this customer-centric experience further. It’s one more way users can integrate the tools they need within a single ecosystem.</p> <p><strong>What’s in it for Apple?</strong></p> <p>Apple stands to make financial gains through Pay Later, thereby adding to its bottom line. Currently its reach in the retail world is evident, with iPhone-based payment services <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-07-13/apple-goldman-plan-buy-now-pay-later-service-to-rival-paypal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">accepted by 85% of US retailers</a>.</p> <p>One 2021 survey found that about 26% of <a href="https://www.statista.com/statistics/1275393/australia-share-of-consumers-using-bnpl-by-purchase-category/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">regular online shoppers</a> in Australia used buy now, pay later services.</p> <p>As Apple’s customers increasingly start to use the Pay Later service, it will gain from merchant fees. These are fees which retailers pay Apple in exchange for being able to offer customers Apple Pay. In addition, Apple will also gain valuable insight into consumers’ purchase behaviours, which will allow the company to predict future consumption and spending behaviour.</p> <p>To deliver the buy now, pay later service, Apple has <a href="https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-07-13/apple-goldman-plan-buy-now-pay-later-service-to-rival-paypal" target="_blank" rel="noopener">joined forces with Goldman Sachs</a>, who will finance the loans.</p> <p>This relationship has been in place since 2019, with Goldman Sachs also acting as a partner for the Apple credit card (although Pay Later is not tied to the Apple credit card). This strategic partnership has helped Apple gain strong footing in the world of consumer finance.</p> <p><strong>Challenges for consumers</strong></p> <p>The reality is that the world of <a href="https://www.holmanwebb.com.au/blog/655/buy-now-pay-later-bnpl-update-how-to-seek-and-keep-code-compliance-accreditation" target="_blank" rel="noopener">unregulated finance</a>, which includes buy now, pay later, does not bode well <a href="https://ndh.org.au/debt-problems/buy-now-pay-later/risks-of-using-buy-now-pay-later/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">for all customers</a>.</p> <p>Younger <a href="https://www.emarketer.com/content/almost-75-of-bnpl-users-us-gen-z-millennials" target="_blank" rel="noopener">demographics</a> (such as Gen Z and Millenials) and low-income <a href="https://thefintechtimes.com/one-in-four-bnpl-users-are-financially-vulnerable/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">households</a> can be <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/08/07/why-millennials-and-gen-zs-are-jumping-on-the-buy-now-pay-later-trend.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">more vulnerable</a> to the risks associated with using these services – and can rack up debt as a result.</p> <p>Purchases through buy now, pay later schemes may also be driven by a desire to own the latest <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/2021/12/16/chinas-buy-now-pay-later-market-to-grow-challenges-ahead-experts.html" target="_blank" rel="noopener">gadgets and luxury goods</a> – a message pushed onto consumers through slick marketing. In other words, they may continually spend more money on purchases than they can actually afford.</p> <p>Missing payments on Pay Later would negatively impact an individual’s <a href="https://www.zdnet.com/finance/banking/wwdc-2022-buy-now-pay-later-with-apples-new-wallet-feature/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">credit rating</a>, which can then have adverse outcomes such as <a href="https://www.cnbc.com/select/side-effects-of-bad-credit/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">not qualifying</a> for traditional loans or credit cards.</p> <p>A focus on consumerist behaviour can also trigger an “<a href="https://www.psychologytoday.com/au/blog/the-psychology-deciding/202201/if-i-own-it-it-must-be-good-what-is-the-ownership-effect" target="_blank" rel="noopener">ownership effect</a>”. This is when people become attached to their purchases and are unlikely to return them, even if they can’t afford them.</p> <p>Apple’s technology-driven and consumer-centric marketing gives it an edge over other buy now, pay later schemes. It claims the service is designed with consumers’ financial health in mind. But as is the case with any of these services, consumers ought to be aware of the risks and manage them carefully. <!-- Below is The Conversation's page counter tag. Woolworths’ $300 million wage scandal expands to include Dan Murphy’s and BWS staff

<p>Woolworths Group chairman Gordon Cairns has revealed that the Woolworths underpayment scandal – which saw close to 6000 workers underpaid by $300 million across a decade – also involved staff from liquor arms Dan Murphy’s and BWS.</p> <p>Speaking to shareholders in Sydney today, Cairns said Woolworths had “fully expected” to discover more cases across the business, “and we have”, though “not to the same extent as in the supermarket business.”</p> <p>Cairns felt that that the fact so many staff members were underpaid was “incredibly disappointing”, he said at today’s annual general meeting.</p> <p>“It was brought to our attention by three of our team members in February this year. We immediately investigated, found their assertions about their individual circumstances to be correct, and we remedied.</p> <p>“We then began an across-the-board investigation, which continues given we are checking every shift for every salaried team member back as far as this has been an issue or records exist.”</p> <p>He proceeded to say that he and CEO Brad Banducci were “accept[ing] responsibility by voluntarily taking reductions in [their] pay” with Banducci forfeiting his short-term incentive while Cairns would face a 20 per cent reduction in his director fees.</p> <p>Back in October, Banducci had said that he was fully prepared for his bonus to be cut due to the underpayment incident. Last financial year, he pocketed $2.66 million as well as $4 million in bonuses.</p> <p>“I fully expect to have a conversation with the board on the consequences of this and I fully expect it will be impacting bonuses for myself and maybe there will be other things that come out of it,” he said.</p> <p>“We apologise to our team, we’re going to make it right, but it’s a very complex issue.”</p> <p>Law firm Adero Law has filed a class action against the grocery giant, saying the total amount is over $620 million.</p> <p>“Adero is instructed that current and former Woolworths employees have suffered underpayments and systemic wage theft during their employment at Woolworths on a far greater scale than the retail giant has disclosed,” Adero’s website stated.</p> <p>But Woolworths said it will “fully defend” the proceedings.</p> <p>“In the context of its commitment to fully remediate all affected salaried team members, Woolworths Group believes the class action proceedings are without merit,” the company said.</p> <p>“Woolworths estimates that the one-off impact for remediation is expected to be in the range of $200-300 million (before tax).”</p>

Disney’s US theme parks are expanding their vegan menu

<p>For people with dietary restrictions, dining at the amusement park can be less than festive with limited variety and food options. But now Disney has made an effort to cater to vegetarians and vegans as it expanded its <span><a href="https://edition.cnn.com/travel/article/disney-theme-parks-vegan/index.html">plant-based offerings</a></span> at all of the major restaurants within its US theme parks.</p> <p>Hundreds of plant-based options will be added to the menu at all of Disney’s major quick and table service restaurants, with a green leaf symbol to denote the vegan- and vegetarian-friendly meals.</p> <p>The new menu items will be rolled out in Florida’s Walt Disney World starting October, and in Anaheim’s Disneyland starting spring 2020. Visitors will find more than 400 plant-based dishes, including steamed Asian dumplings at Le Cellier, chili-spiced crispy fried tofu bowl at Animal Kingdom and cashew cheesecake at California Grill.</p> <p>The initiative to include vegan options on every menu is limited to the US. However, there are also animal-free options at international parks, such as caramel mix nuts banana cake at Shanghai Disney Resort and risotto-style spelt with mushrooms in Paris.</p> <p>Previously, herbivore visitors had to sort out their meals on their own. A blog titled <span><a href="https://vegandisneyworld.com/vegan-options/vegan-animal-kingdom/"><em>Vegan Disney World</em></a></span> listed all the vegan food options within the Disney Parks, ranging from pineapple Dole Whip to roasted vegetable bowl.</p>

“National disgrace”: Aussie taxpayers fork out $40 million to expand irrigation in the Murray-Darling Basin

<p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Australian taxpayers have given a large corporation more than $40 million, which has enabled it to expand irrigation in the Murray-Darling Basin under an environmental scheme that has been labelled a national disgrace.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Four Corners revealed that more than $4 billion in Commonwealth Funds have been handed over to irrigators. This has allowed them to expand their operations and use more water under the $5.6 billion water infrastructure scheme.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">The scheme is intended to recover water for the rivers by giving farmers money to build water-saving infrastructure in return for some of their water rights.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Some beneficiaries of the scheme are foreign-owned corporations according to </span><a href="https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-07-08/taxpayers-helping-fund-murray-darling-basin-expansion/11279468"><span style="font-weight: 400;">the ABC.</span></a></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Maryanne Slattery, a former director at the Murray-Darling Basin Authority says that it’s horrifying a scheme that’s designed to help the environment has allowed irrigators to use more water.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"That program was supposed to reduce the amount of water that was going to irrigation, when it's actually increased the opportunities for irrigation … all subsidised by taxpayers," she said.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"I think Australian taxpayers will be really shocked to find out that that money is actually going to foreign investors as well."</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">UNSW river ecologist Professor Richard Kingsford has been studying the Murrumbidgee River for more than 30 years. He has said that the new dams are trapping water that would have otherwise flowed downstream into habitats and farming communities in the Murray-Darling Basin.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"I find that astounding. I mean, why are we building these large dams for private gain at public cost?" he said.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"Essentially it increases the take from the river system and ultimately decreases the amount of water in the river. That to me is where, in fact, we may be seeing more water taken out of the rivers than water savings."</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">Maryanne Slattery says that the region is unsuitable for dams because of the high rate of evaporation.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"You just see dam after dam after dam, these massive on-farm dams, in a place that is as flat as a table, that just should not have dams," said Ms Slattery, who is now a senior water researcher at the Australia Institute.</span></p> <p><span style="font-weight: 400;">"And then when you realise they're being paid for by the Commonwealth, under a supposedly environmental program, that's just horrifying."</span></p>

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle expand their wedding guest list in a very special way

<p><span>It is not long now until Prince Harry and Meghan Markle tie the knot together at St George’s Chapel on May 19, and one topic on many people’s minds is the prestigious guest list.</span></p> <p><span>It has now been revealed that the lovebirds have expanded their guest list after inviting more than 2,500 people to the grounds of Windsor Castle for a very intimate view of their special day.</span></p> <p><span>When the couple announced their engagement in November, they highlighted that they would do what they could to involve the public on their wedding day.</span></p> <p><span>“They want their wedding day to be shaped so as to allow members of the public to feel part of the celebrations too,” Kensington Palace said in a press release on March 2.</span></p> <p><span>“This wedding, like all weddings, will be a moment of fun and joy that will reflect the characters and values of the bride and groom.”</span></p> <p><span>Around 2,640 members of the public, with people drawn from various groups, will be invited to watch the arrival and departure from St George’s Chapel.</span></p> <p><span>Approximately 1,200 of these guests will be nominated to attend by nine offices of the Lord Lieutenants, the Queen’s representatives, who are dispersed around the country.</span></p> <p><span>Also targeting those the couple have a soft spot for, young people showing strong leadership while serving their communities, will also be among the mix of those invited.</span></p> <p><span>Up to 200 of the guests will be chosen from charities linked with Meghan and Harry such as WellChild, which assists ill kids, and the Invictus Games for injured veterans and serving military members.</span></p> <p><span>As many as 100 children will also be chosen from two local schools, the Royal School and St George’s School.</span></p> <p><span>Then there are the 610 people who live on the castle grounds, and 530 members of the Royal Household and the Crown Estate who will also be invited to watch the arrival and departure.</span></p> <p><span>Are you looking forward to watching this royal wedding? Let us know in the comments below. </span></p>

Good news for Aldi shoppers

<p><span>Just when Aldi customers thought they couldn’t snag any more bargains, more good news has been confirmed for the faithful customers of the German supermarket chain.</span></p> <p><span>Aldi has announced that it will be expanding its wine range across the country after winning Liquor Retailer of the year.</span></p> <p><span>New and lesser-known imported wine will be available to customers in more than 300 stores in ACT, NSW, Victoria and Western Australia.</span></p> <p><span>Some of the new wines that will be hitting shelves include a Fiano Italian white, a Spanish Rosado rose and a range of other French red varieties.</span></p> <p><span>Aldi stores in Queensland and South Australia have been unable to add the alcohol section due to liquor licensing laws.</span></p> <p><span>Aldi is also yet to plant its stores in Tasmania despite a Facebook petition campaigning for the supermarket store to come across the Bass Strait.</span></p> <p><span>“Aldi will continue to offer exceptional value, not only in the types of wine we will offer but in the styles and formats, for example with magnums and wine sets,” Aldi's Wine and Champagne Buying Director Jason Bowyer told <span style="text-decoration: underline;"><strong><a href="http://www.heraldsun.com.au/business/companies/aldi-australia-to-expand-alcohol-line-as-it-wins-roy-morgan-liquor-retailer-of-the-year-award/news-story/ba04490018f8f516595910427e568f32?utm_content=SocialFlow&amp;login=1" target="_blank">News Corp</a></strong></span>.</span></p> <p style="text-align: center;"><span><img width="498" height="245" src="https://oversixtydev.blob.core.windows.net/media/7815605/image__498x245.jpg" alt="Image_ (53)"/></span></p> <p><span>“Each and every wine in the Aldi range is an exclusive, unique blend made in close partnership with our buyers and suppliers,” Mr Bowyer said. </span></p> <p><span>The changes to Aldi’s wine catalogue are expected to take place over the next year.</span></p> <p><span>Do you buy alcohol from Aldi?
