The exact amount Aussies need to save for a comfortable retirement

A confronting new financial survey has revealed how much money Australians need to save annually in order to have a comfortable retirement.

The survey, conducted by financial planner Merit Planning, concluded that the average Aussie may need to save around $75,000 to $100,000 per year to have enough funds to retire.

And while superannuation is a major asset on the path towards retirement, the fund you invest with may not be giving you the full picture of where your money is going.

New analysis by Market Forces revealed several major super funds are potentially misleading consumers by “greenwashing”, with eight of the 11 super fund investment options labelled “sustainable” or “socially responsible”, choosing to invest in fossil fuel giants.

Both issues have cast light on major problems the average Aussie will face going forward as inflation and cost of living prices continue to surge.

Merit Planning’s survey took hundreds of responses from retirees about their retirement experience, showing how big their nest egg will need to be for the years ahead.

Almost half of respondents, or 42 per cent, said between $75,000 and $100,000 is needed, while about 20 per cent said the average person needs over $100,000 a year.

Only 6 per cent of respondents said the age pension level of around $40,000 per year was enough to retire with.

Financial planner Darren Howard said the average couple in Sydney would need to earn about $85,000 per annum combined to retire comfortably given the ongoing cost of living crisis.

Craig McDonald, owner of CBM Mortgages, said: “We speak to all our clients about their retirement and their superannuation position and how that will look when they enter into retirement.

“We recommend they speak to a financial planner to ensure they are putting those steps in place early.”

Jessica Rowe reveals the exact moment she knew she had to quit Studio 10 for her family

Jessica Rowe shocked her co-hosts when she announced she’d be departing Studio 10 in March earlier this year.

Even though it was “the best job she’d ever had”, Jess had made the difficult decision to leave the gig to “be more present for her daughters”.

“It was a big decision to leave full-time work but I knew it was the right thing, and right time, for me,” she told 9Honey. “I thought long and hard about it for about six to seven months.”

After weighing up the pros and cons for months – she jokingly admits she must have bored her husband, Channel Nine news anchor Peter Overton – she wasn’t closer to making the big decision.

But one moment after returning from a family holiday in Thailand made her choice crystal clear.

"I was happy and relaxed and the girls were too. Suddenly I thought, ‘I need to bring this state of mind back with me - how can I do that?’ I realised it meant changing my work,” she explained.

The mother to Allegra, 11, and Giselle, 9, said her girls are growing up fast and she wanted to be with them every step of the way.

“I was finding in the afternoons I'd be getting grumpier and I don't like feeling like that and I thought something has to give,” she told the publication.

“When they were younger I felt they needed me physically, and now it's more emotional, and I want to be there for them.”

It’s been a couple of months since she left the morning show, but Jess said she has no regrets.

In fact, a conversation with her youngest daughter proved she had made the right decision.

“I had never taken Giselle to school as I started Studio 10 at the same time,” she said.

“We were walking down the road and she was holding my hand and she said: 'Mummy I love you taking me to school,’ with this big smile on her face and I knew everything was right.”

Now she’s spending more time with her family, Jess says she feels “happy, lighter and taller”.

“Families always have to juggle and weigh up things, but you have to be open to change, often it can be hard and frightening but it’s good.”

If you haven’t noticed these actors’ habits before, you will definitely will be able to notice it next time you watch one of their films.

1. Harrison Ford – pointing

Harrison Ford was caught out a few years ago for his go-to acting technique of pointing. In an interview with American host Conan O’Brien, a montage was shared of all the times Ford has relied on his pointing techniques in a scene.

2. Identical twins give birth at exact same time

They say twins have a special bond, but these sisters have taken it to the next level. Leah Rodgers and Sarah Mariuz, 35-year-old twins living in two different cities, pulled off an incredibly unlikely feat, giving birth at exactly the same time.

Rodgers, who lives in Denver, Colorado, welcomed a boy at 1.18am last Thursday, the same time her sister gave birth to a baby girl in La Jolla California – more than 1,700km away.

“We've always lived in separate places, but all of us — we have two sisters — are very close in age and very close,” Rodgers told Today. “But certainly there's another connection at the twin level.”

The sisters insist that despite falling pregnant at the same time, they never planned on having children born close together, let alone at the exact same time. Rodgers claims her “twintuition” made her know instinctively that Mariuz was pregnant the second she arrived at the family’s Thanksgiving dinner, before she even announced her pregnancy. “We were jumping up and down, just so happy for each other.”

Incredible! What’s the uncanniest example of “twintuition” you’ve ever seen?
