4 musical duos who couldn’t stand one another

Working closely with a partner can create tension, especially when you’re working on a creative endeavour. Not all successful partnerships are built on mutual respect and admiration, and to prove it, here are four musical duos who couldn’t stand one another.

1. The Everly Brothers

Their music may still resonate through the years, but Don and Phil Everly couldn’t stand each other. “We only ever had one argument,” Phil famously said in 1970. “It’s been lasting for 25 years.” At a 1973 California concert, Don arrived drunk and messed up the lyrics to a song, causing an on-stage argument between the brothers. Those close to the Everlys suspect that Don resented Phil for his sweeter, higher voice, while others suggest that the pair’s father was a source of at least some of the tension.

2. Paul McCartney and John Lennon

According to various reports, McCartney and Lennon would go through periods of ice cold tension, only communicating through lawyers at some stages. But at other times, they were as close as brothers. Lennon revealed that he felt McCartney was subconsciously trying to “destroy my great songs”, saying that Paul would encourage an experimental sound during the recording and producing, while putting in hours of fine tuning on his own tracks. The two were reportedly on good terms before Lennon died, however.

3. Sam and Dave

This 1960s duo (made up of Sam Moore and Dave Prater) behind some of R&B’s most iconic hits, like “Soul Man” and “Hold On! I’m Comin’” could hardly stand one another. Though they did their best to hide the animosity on stage, their behind-the-scenes relationship was one of animosity, and they split in 1970. A good deal of the tension reportedly stemmed from the fact that Prater shot and wounded his own wife in 1968, while Moore himself suffered from drug addictions.

4. Simon and Garfunkel

One of music’s most iconic duos, Simon and Garfunkel met at junior school in New York, and began trying to secure a record deal in the early 1960s. Unfortunately, the tensions that simmered between the pair have lasted for decades, eventually breaking up over the release of their seminal album, “Bridge Over Troubled Water” in 1970. The pair staged a reunion tour in 2004, and were due to repeat the act in 2010 until Garfunkel suffered vocal chord damage. Garfunkel reported that Simon “wasn’t particularly” supportive during that time. But time seems to have cooled the quarrel. In a 2014 interview, Garfunkel stated that, “I’m used to the fact that we’re just different characters.”

Images: Getty

The skincare duo as iconic as a gin and tonic

When it comes to fighting the physical signs of ageing, it's easy to get lost in all the various products and buzzwords that claim to make your skin look more youthful.

If there’s one thing we do know, it’s that using a range of retinol products is your best bet to help reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

Retinol-based skin care helps to increase the production of collagen in the skin, and in turn helps to make fine lines and wrinkles disappear.

They also stimulate the production of new blood vessels in the skin, which improves skin colour and pigmentation, while also helping to reduce the look of age spots and soften rough patches of skin.

While many retinol products on the market are prone to being notoriously harsh on your skin, No7 is here to save the day with a new skin care duo to boost their already impressive range.

No7 has announced their new Pure Retinol Collection: a range of new retinol products that have been developed, tested and proven to be effective for all skin types.
<blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; Victorian radio duo under fire for “cruel” prank on unsuspecting NSW resident

Victorian radio duo Will and Woody, who were looking to prank Sydneysiders enjoying ‘Freedom Day’ on Monday, came unstuck after their stunt backfired.

The duo had posted on social media asking listeners to ‘dob in’ friends in NSW they wanted to prank on Monday, the first day of many COVID-19 restrictions easing in NSW. They explained, “On behalf of a Victorian we are going to stitch up someone in NSW who is enjoying their freedoms”.

One such Victorian was Annaleigh, who was feeling “a bit salty” that her NSW-based best friend Mia had dinner plans that evening. She explained that like many other NSW residents, Mia had recently moved her second dose of the COVID-19 vaccine forward so she could take advantage of the eased restrictions on Monday.

Woody then called an unsuspecting Mia, introducing himself as “Trent Summers from the NSW Health department” and warning that he was “unfortunately not calling with great news”. He informed Mia that a number of people during her booking window had been injected with saline solution instead of the vaccine, but kindly reassured her that it wasn’t harmful, “it just means that you potentially haven’t had the second vaccination”.

He said the only way to confirm would be to perform a blood test, and then, after asking if she had plans that evening, proceeded to suggest she wear a “hazard suit, face shield and gloves” to dinner with her friends. To this, she responded, “Oh, really? Umm, I’d probably just rather not go out.”

The host continued, saying, “You’d probably also have to bring your own drinks and food. And you’d probably have to sit by yourself.” At this point, all she managed was a, “Yep,” her voice breaking – at which point Woody revealed it was a “stitch up” and let Mia know her friend was on the line. “What the hell? I’m literally tearing up in the gym. My god,” Mia said. “I was thinking, ‘I’ll have to cancel everything!’ I hate needles! That was so mean.”

Listeners were quick to share their thoughts on social media, with one describing it as “not funny at all” and wondering if it was “potentially an offence”.

.@willandwoody calling young woman - as a prank - impersonating @NSWHealth, telling woman that her second dose may have been saline, not vaxx, has to get a blood test, wear full PPE and stay away from other people when out in public. Doggy duo can’t face owner after caught stealing treats

Uh oh. BB and April have just been caught red handed (or red pawed) for eating all the doggy treats in the cupboard. And their owner certainly isn’t impressed.

BB and April have spent the afternoon munching on Dentastix (a dog treat designed to help clean teeth). And when their owner catches them out, asking who’s responsible for eating all the treats, it’s obvious the two pooches were working in cahoots.

They couldn’t look guiltier as they try to avoid their owner’s eye contact, but to their credit they resist the urge to dob each other in for a lighter sentence.

What a funny video! In honour of his late mother, the 76-year-old British photographer has collated the photographs for a collection titled Mum: A Snapshot.

“Without a mother, the world would be the worst place going. Everyone loves their mum,” said O’Neill, adding, “When my mother died, I realised how little I had given back. I suppose that’s why I am doing this – to try and give something back to my mother as well...As I grow older, I’ve realised that without her, I couldn’t have done anything.”

Here are a selection of some of our favourites from the series:

Judy Garland and Liza Minelli, 1964

Twiggy and Carly Lawson, 2009

Britt Ekland and Nicholai Adler, 1965

Jo and Leah Wood, 1981

Nanette Newman, Emma Forbes and Sarah Standing, 1980

Romy Schneider and David Schneider, 1972

Related links:

These four sisters posed for a picture every year for 40 years.
