“Dig a hole in my chest”: Supermodel reveals double cancer fight

Supermodel icon Linda Evangelista has shared the devastating details of her cancer battle, after being diagnosed twice in five years.

In a candid interview with WSJ magazine, the 58-year-old revealed why she chose to "keep it quiet" and only tell a handful of people close to her about her health battle.

Evangelista was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018 after a routine mammogram, and decided to undergo a bilateral mastectomy: a surgical procedure to remove both breasts.

"The margins were not good. [I chose this treatment] due to other health factors, without hesitation, because I wanted to put everything behind me and not to have to deal with this.

"Thinking I was good and set for life. Breast cancer was not going to kill me."

Four years later in 2022, Evangelista felt a lump on her chest and an MRI revealed cancer was present in her pectoral muscle.

"I just went into this mode that I know how to do – just do what you've got to do and get through it," she said. "And that's what I did."

"Dig a hole in my chest," she recalled telling her doctors.

"I don't want it to look pretty. I want you to excavate. I want to see a hole in my chest when you're done. Do you understand me? I'm not dying from this."

After another round of surgery, she was told the outlook was good for the future, but there is always a possibility the cancer could return.

"Well, once it's come back, there's a chance," she recalled the oncologist's words.

"I know I have one foot in the grave, but I'm totally in celebration mode."

Image credits: Instagram / Getty Images

Sam Mac’s cheeky dig at Robert Irwin

Sam Mac has taken a cheeky dig at Robert Irwin during his Taronga Zoo segment.

The Sunrise weatherman was showing off a baby echidna that was new to the Taronga Zoo.

“Smudge is a baby echidna, only 43 days old,” Sam said as he showed off the baby echidna.

“You can actually see the spikes starting to form there as well.

“And apparently, he loves it if you give him a little belly rub.”

Sam then gently rubbed Smudge’s belly as he squirmed in delight.

“Take that Robert Irwin,” he laughed.

Sunrise weatherman @MrSamMac is taking on @RobertIrwin while handling some cute and cuddly animals at @tarongazoo #Sunriseon7 pic.twitter.com/smJ2SaOm3x

— Sunrise (@sunriseon7) October 24, 2022

It comes just months after Robert took his own dig at Sam when he covered for him as a weatherman in July.

"You're going to fill in next week as a guest weatherman!" host Natalie Barr told Robert. "Tell us about that!”

"I am," Robert replied with a laugh. "All I can say is: Sam Mac, I am coming for ya! I'm excited, it's gonna be good fun guys!”

On the other side however, Robert’s sister Bindi has come under fire for her "pathetic, useless" response to a "tragedy" at a wildlife farm in the US.

Bindi was contacted on Twitter by Taylor Blake in Florida, asking for help to cure her emu Emmanuel, who has avian influenza.

According to Taylor, avian flu has killed 99 percent of the other birds who live at Knuckle Bump Farms, in what she described as a "massive tragedy".

Running out of options to save her celebrity emu, Taylor reached out to the Aussie wildlife warriors online.

Bindi Irwin responded saying that, although Australia Zoo had treated more than 100,000 animals, it had “never treated an emu with this particular disease”.

“We will need to rely on our fellow animal experts with more experience with this avian flu,” she began, in a tweet in response to Blake’s call for help.

She signed off the response with, “Sending love and light your way from our entire family”.

Bindi's response was quickly condemned online, with many suggesting the Irwins might have been able to do something to assist.

Images: Instagram

Elton John's glamorous new digs

Sir Elton John and his husband David Furnish have set their sights on their new home: a yet-to-be-completed penthouse in Toronto.

In a recent interview with Globe and Mail, the couple revealed that they had bought one of the bespoke penthouses in the King Toronto complex.

The music icon and filmmaker have chosen an apartment called the “Treehouse”, as reported by Storeys.

Designed by Danish architect Bjarke Ingels, the complex includes six penthouses that are described as like “living on a mountaintop”, according to developer Westbank.

While they are all custom-designed, all of the penthouses share a natural theme integrated using trees, foliage, and outdoor terraces - with the Treehouse even boasting an actual tree.

The new two-storey home of the Rocket Man singer will also feature four terraces, an inner courtyard, and an interior that will include a wine cellar and curved sculptural staircase.

“It has great views over the west and south,” says Riz Dhanji, president at Rad Marketing, who represents Westbank.

“It has a unique tree in the middle of the unit as part of an artistic factor, a custom brass kitchen designed by Bjarke Ingels, and a stunning brass curved staircase that’s custom designed. The hardwood flooring is custom designed to mimic the exterior expression of the penthouse itself.”

The unique designs aren’t exclusive to the penthouses either, with the complex exterior designed to have a LEGO-like look that resembles a stack of light-filled boxes and which is expected to be completed by September next year.

Images: @eltonjohn (Instagram), Westbank

Grace Tame’s sneaky dig in book cover

Grace Tame has revealed that the three wolves represented on the cover of her memoir are media bosses she’s constantly clashed with.

The activist shared a sneak peek into the cover of the book - The Ninth Life of a Diamond Miner, A Memoir, is set to be released on September 27.

The cover shows an illustration of three wolves and two of Tame’s face in which two of them are “growling” at Tame while another has his head bowed.

The 2021 Australian of the Year drew the cover herself using a $1 ballpoint from Woolies and has now explained who the wolves represent in the response to a tweet.

“Three guesses who the wolves on my book cover are lol,” Tame responded to an article underneath a picture of Kerry Stokes, Rupert Murdoch, and Peter Costello posted on Twitter by Crikey writer Bernard Keane.

Three guesses who the wolves on my book cover are lol

— Grace Tame (@TamePunk) June 15, 2022

Tame is not short of any exposure by mainstream media but has been frequently targetted by the trio media empires of Seven West Media, News Corp and Nine.

She has also called out the fact that the majority of Australian media is owned by Rupert Murdoch.

Tame is quite vocal about the media’s bias toward her and has frequently called it out.

Former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, who is calling for a royal commission into Rupert Murdoch, previously defended the activist after she was targetted by the Murdoch media for her stance.

“There goes Murdoch, trying to bully Grace Tame like they have so many voices for progress over the years,” he tweeted.

“They whine about ‘cancel culture’ but they will try to cancel anyone who doesn't share their reactionary worldview. As a teenager she found the courage to speak up after experiencing awful and ongoing child sexual abuse. This fight to find her voice would not be her last.

“In 2021 Grace stepped squarely into the public eye as the Australian of the Year, and was the catalyst for a tidal wave of conversation and action. Australians from all walks of life were inspired and moved by her fire and passion. Here she was using her voice, and encouraging others to use theirs too.

“The Ninth Life of a Diamond Miner is Grace's story, in Grace's words, on Grace's terms. Like Grace, it is sharply intelligent, deeply felt and often blisteringly funny. And, as with all her work, it offers a constructive and optimistic vision for a better future for all of us.”

Images: Pan Macmillan Australia/Facebook

Man digs backyard hole to “imprison” Dan Andrews

A Melbourne man has been accused of causing damages of up to $1 million to a Telstra phone tower, as well as a strange plot to capture Victorian premier Dan Andrews.

Nathan Glover, 44, appeared in court on Thursday, where a police summary was read about the events of October 7th.

The report claimed that the man rode an electric scooter to the Telstra tower about 1.5 kilometers from his home, broke in and started a fire.

Mr Glover denies any involvement in the act of arson.

The fire caused about $1 million in damage and took telecommunications offline, endangering public safety by limiting access to emergency services.

Upon searching the man’s home, police found magic mushrooms, cannabis, wire cutters, petrol, two samurai swords, and an electric scooter and clothing that match CCTV footage of the offender.

They also found a six metre-by-1.5 metre hole in Mr Glover's backyard, which he allegedly told police was to imprison the Victorian premier.

Police allege that an account on the encrypted messaging app Telegram with the name “Nate Glove” volunteered in September for “special ops”, in the chat group titled Hoodlums of Melbourne Special Ops.

“I’m down for special ops, but only if I get to burn something down,” the account allegedly posted.

“Those 5G towers would make a nice fire,” the chat’s administrator allegedly responded.

“My thinking exactly,” the Nate Glove account allegedly replied.

Nathan Glover has been charged with criminal damage by fire, possessing a prohibited weapon, possessing cannabis, possessing drug of dependence, and committing an indictable offence while on bail.

Image credits: Facebook / Getty Images

Paul McCartney takes a dig at the Rolling Stones in candid new interview

Legendary musician Sir Paul McCartney has reignited the rivalry between The Beatles and The Rolling Stones with a brutal burn in a recent interview.

In an interview with The New Yorker this week, Sir McCartney said of the Stones, “I’m not sure I should say it, but they’re a blues cover band, that’s sort of what the Stones are.”

Of his own band, he said, ”I think our net was cast a bit wider than theirs.”

This isn’t the first time McCartney, 79, has described the Stones this way; in an interview with Howard Stern last year, he said that he thought the Beatles were the better band, adding that the Stones, “are rooted in the blues. When they are writing stuff, it has to do with the blues.

”We had a little more influences... There’s a lot of differences and I love the Stones, but I’m with you. The Beatles were better.”

Responding to his comments, Stones frontman Mick Jagger, 78, said in an interview with Zane Lowe, that there was “obviously no competition” between the two groups, and called McCartney a “sweetheart”.

Jagger went on to describe what he saw as the fundamental difference between the two bands, saying, “The big difference, though, is, and sort of slightly seriously, is that the Rolling Stones is a big concert band in other decades and other areas when the Beatles never even did an arena tour, or Madison Square Garden with a decent sound system.

“They broke up before that business started, the touring business for real.”

The Beatles performed together from 1960 to 1970, while The Rolling Stones have been together for almost six decades since forming in 1962.

Both being iconic 1960s rock bands, The Beatles and The Rolling Stones have always been compared, despite having vastly different sounds and career trajectories. Writing for Rolling Stone, musician, Bruce Springsteen’s E Street Band guitarist and Sopranos actor Steve Van Zandt said of the two bands, “In '64, the Beatles were perfect: the hair, the harmonies, the suits. They bowed together. Their music was extraordinarily sophisticated. The whole thing was exciting and alien but very distant in its perfection.

“The Stones were alien and exciting, too. But with the Stones, the message was, "Maybe you can do this." The hair was sloppier. The harmonies were a bit off. And I don't remember them smiling at all. They had the R&B traditionalist's attitude: "We are not in show business. We are not pop music."

Fellow musician Elvis Costello described The Stones as “R&B evangelists”, and said that compared to them, The Beatles sounded like “nothing else”, and made writing your own material “expected, rather than exceptional”.

Image: Mike Marsland/WireImage/Getty Images, Jeff Curry/Getty Images

Dan Andrews' dig ruffles feathers

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has made a subtle dig at the NSW Government, saying that retail stores would not be open during Victoria's snap lockdown, and that the state has avoided a "NSW-style, lengthy lockdown" – a comment that has not gone unnoticed by his interstate counterparts.

“Just for clarity, retail is shut,” Daniel Andrews continued, while detailing lockdown measures.

“It’s not open. There will be no browsing, it’s click and collect. That’s what it has to be. That’s what is safe. That’s what has worked before in Melbourne and it is what will work again.”

When he was asked whether he thought NSW should have learned from Victoria's lockdown last year, Andrews said that he wasn't there to "scoff or sneer" at anyone.

“That doesn’t work against this virus. This virus doesn’t care if you’ve got a big ego or not,” he said.

“Just get on and get the job done. I can’t control what happens and doesn’t happen in NSW. These cases started in NSW, but I’m determined they will end here. “

Victoria's snap five-day lockdown will kick in from midnight after the state recorded more than a dozen new cases in 48 hours - all of which have been linked to NSW's delta outbreak.

The snap lockdown wasn't an easy decision to make, according to Andrews.

“You only get one chance to go hard and go fast. If you wait, if you hesitate, if you doubt, then you always will be looking back wishing you had done more earlier,” Mr Andrews said.

“I am not prepared to avoid a five day lockdown now only to find ourselves in a five week or a five month lockdown.

“That is why we are making this very difficult decision and it is why I know Victoria, despite the pain and the difficulty of this, know and understand there is no option.”

It's the fifth lockdown for Victoria since the pandemic began.

"This is going to kill me": Grant Denyer's stunning dig at I'm a Celeb castmates

Grant Denyer has taken a swipe at his I'm A Celeb campmates, admitting he wished he'd turned down the offer to appear on the show when he first laid eyes on the cast.

Speaking to TV Week, the Aussie star explained that he's "not really into" reality stars, which the show seems to be dominated by this year.

But despite "instantly" regretting his decision to head into the Aussie jungle, he revealed he quickly grew fond of his fellow campers.

“When I arrived, I was like, ‘I’ve made the wrong decision,’” former Family Feud host Denyer, 43, told the publication.

“It hit me like a ton of bricks. I thought, ‘Oh, my God – I can’t be here around the clock with these fame-seekers bouncing off the walls busting to be on camera. This is going to kill me.’”

He said it didn't take long for everyone to realise they all needed each other, as the cast formed a strong bond.

“If we didn’t do that, the show would have smashed us and we would have walked out in droves,” he says.

“It was that harrowing.”

He added his I’m A Celebrity experience was “a thousand times harder” than he imagined it would be.

“I thought most of it was just made for television,” he said.

“As it turns out, it’s not. You’re starving, you’re exhausted, you’re being punished every single day with some ridiculous challenge to frighten the life out of you, and you’ve just got nothing left in the tank to fight back.”

But he did reveal one upside, saying he lost "heaps" of weight while in the jungle.

“I’ve lost 7kg off my tiny frame,” Denyer said.

“That’s probably the only benefit to going in there.”

Lisa Wilkinson’s subtle but obvious dig at Karl Stefanovic

Lisa Wilkinson took to social media to make a not-so-subtle dig at her former Today co-host, Karl Stefanovic.

Wilkinson referenced her old colleague's infamous post-Logies “drunk” broadcast, joking that the best way to win a Gold Logie is to get tipsy and make a fool of yourself on national television.

Stefanovic received the esteemed award in 2011 – two years after his drunken escapade, where he appeared on the breakfast show still intoxicated from the Logies the night before.

While slurring his words, the 44-year-old gushed about Wilkinson’s appearance, telling her how pretty she looked the evening before.

The 57-year-old tried to keep the program running smoothly, but it seemed Stefanovic received little to no discourse over the train wreck episode.

“You're missing the point, the lot of you,” she tweeted. “If you really want the Gold, just drink A LOT, then come on air with me, tell me how beautiful I am, and I’ll nurse you through it all.

“It’s worked before. #LogieTwitterWar.”

You’re missing the point, the lot of you. Julie Bishop slaps down Karl Stefanovic over PM dig

Today show host Karl Stefanovic’s attempt to skewer Julie Bishop fell flat in an interview this morning as the Foreign Minister fired back with a shot of her own.

Following the failed Liberal leadership spill yesterday – where Malcolm Turnbull narrowly emerged victorious over former Homer Affair minister Peter Dutton – Stefanovic asked the deputy leader: “What’s it like to talk to a man on death row?”

Not missing a beat, Bishop quipped back: “Well, I’m talking to you so what are you suggesting?”

Bishop went on to insist Mr Turnbull would unify the party, and denied the 48 to 35 vote margin was worrying for the Prime Minister.

“A win of 13 votes in leadership contests is an endorsement. You know about sporting contests – if you win, you win,” she said.

Bishop also made easy work of David Koch on Sunrise when he tried to ask her about her own leadership ambitions.

After Bishop replied with the same message of loyalty to Turnbull, Kochie invited her to come back on “in a few days” when another challenge has been predicted.

She knew exactly how to change the course of the conversation. Playing to his AFL allegiances as chairman of Port Adelaide, she replied: “Why don’t you have me on again and we can talk about footy?”

Sunrise co-host Samantha Armytage poked fun at Kochie, saying: “She knows how to change your direction, doesn’t she?”

Lisa Wilkinson’s dig at Channel Nine

Lisa Wilkinson has taken a cheeky jab at Channel 9’s Today, talking about her decade-long career with the network at a recent event.

Yesterday, The Project co-host spoke at a Business Chicks breakfast to a crowd of 1500 as the keynote speaker.

“Someone once said to me, find a job you love and you’ll never work another day in your life. Well that is me,” she said.

“I do feel that every day for more than three decades now I’ve been taking money under false pretences, which is kind of funny because it turns out my last boss thought exactly the same thing.”

Wilkinson confessed that she had been scared of failure but thrived because of her passion for journalism.

“There is nothing about journalism and the adrenaline of live television that I don’t love.”

“Sure there have been some incredible challenges and I’m not just talking about working with Karl Stefanovic. I love Karl, despite what you may have read in the latest issue of Woman’s Day and any of those magazines.”

Last year, Wilkinson announced her shocking decision to leave the breakfast show on Twitter.

A Nine spokesman said at the time it had “been unable to meet expectations of Lisa Wilkinson and her manager on a contract renewal”.

In the past, it was reported that Wilkinson’s decision was influenced by her unequal pay with her former co-host Karl Stefanovic.

Although Wilkinson refused to discuss the reasons for her departure, she admitted salary was one of the factors.

“There were lots of reasons why it was time to make a move, and that [pay gap] was part of it. I was very happy that it reignited the conversation, because the gender pay gap is real,” she told Stellar Magazine at the time.

Shortly after Wilkinson’s exit from Channel Nine, the network’s CEO Hugh Marks outlined publicly why he thought Stefanovic was worth more than Wilkinson, and the price she had asked for.

“I went to an incredible amount of trouble to build that [$1.8 million] package for her. She wanted $2.3 million. It wasn’t a $200,000 shortfall to [Karl’s] $2 million magic number. It was $500,000,” he said at the time.
