“Australia wanted us out”: 501 deportee defies odds to return to Australia

A New Zealand man deported from Australia under the controversial 501 section of the Australian Migration Act will be allowed to return, in a victory that he hopes will be a source of hope for others affected by the same scheme.

Gavin Doré was a successful motorcycle salesman in Australia until 2018, when he was convicted for drug offending after his life was upended by a relationship break-up and losing his job.

Desperate to stay in his mortgaged home, the 33-year-old began accepting boarders to help him cover his bills, and who brought with them exposure to the drugs scene.

He was sentenced to three years and three months in prison after his costly dependence on methamphetamine pushed him to start dealing, prompting his visa to be cancelled under Section 501, which then resulted in his deportation once his sentence was complete.

By then, Doré had undergone much of a drug rehabilitation program and became the father of a baby girl to his former partner.

He then worked hard to appeal his case and have his visa reinstated, with the Australian Administrative Appeals Tribunal only recently allowing his return and for his visa to be reinstated.

“Four plus years it took,” he told Open Justice.

The tribunal said the combination of financial shock from losing his job and the emotional difficulty from the relationship break-up led to a “psychological malaise” and depression.

It found that Doré had a “low to negligible risk” of reoffending in Australia and that it was in the best interest of his now four-year-old daughter that he be able to return.

“A lot of 501s arrive (in New Zealand) without hope and, as a result, turn to crime,” he said.

“I’d like people to know that this is possible (to reinstate an Australian visa), and that there is a better way.”

Doré added that he was “one of the lucky ones”, having joined a group in prison who were given advice on how to appeal the decision, including what to say and not say.

“When I joined the group we were given the information that the process was possible, where to find the application, who to send it to,” he explained.

“We actually also got given the details of how to get in touch with an immigration lawyer.”

With Australia tightening the rules since he started his appeal, Doré said people are “losing hope in the process” of appealing.

“I do a bit of work with a church here (in Auckland) … and do quite a bit of work with the 501s. Anyone beating it is unheard of, really,” he said.

“Australia wanted us out, no matter what.

“On the surface they wanted it to look as though there was a legitimate process for an appeal to occur, but … the process itself was so difficult for everyone, really, that a lot of people can’t see a way.”

With most deportees arriving with “literally a backpack” and nothing else, Doré said he was fortunate to have the support of his parents when he arrived in New Zealand.

According to Open Justice, 192 Kiwi deportees have applied to have their deportations revoked since July 2020. Out of those, only 61 people were successful.

Image: NZ Herald

The hardcore royal mourners who defied health advice

Despite meticulously planning his own funeral, Prince Philip’s couldn’t account for the scaling back of the event due to the coronavirus.

Even so, hundreds of mourners headed to Windsor Castle to pay their final respects to Prince Philip, ignoring public health advice to stay home due to COVID-19 restrictions.

“I know they told us to stay away but we haven’t,” said Fiona Oldham, a 53-year old admin worker who made the journey from near Blackpool in northwest England with friends. “I’m a real royalist - I absolutely love them.”

Having attended the London funeral of Prince Diana in 1997, Oldham described Philip as a “character” and the “power behind the throne” of Queen Elizabeth II.

Like many who gathered in Windsor, she was keen to see Princes William and Harry together during Saturday’s ceremonial procession and lamented Harry’s move to the United States.

“We miss him … I’m hoping the queen burns his passport,” she said, chuckling. “We feel that he’s ours.”

Inside the castle, the royal family honoured Philip’s life and service to the queen. Military musicians were spread out outside St. George’s Chapel while just four choristers sang inside. States prepare to defy Scott Morrison’s judgement and shut down this weekend

Victoria and NSW could go into lockdown as early as this weekend if the coronavirus pandemic continues to worsen and Scott Morrison’s restrictions do not flatten the curve.

With the two states having the highest infection rates in the country, NSW premier Gladys Berejiklian said that she was looking “very closely” at the impact of the Federal Government’s closure of businesses.

The NSW premier is prepared to declare a state-wide lockdown by the weekend if infections don’t tail off.

“If we don't see things shifting in the numbers because of [the Federal Government's] actions, NSW will have to go further,” she said on Thursday.

“I'm saying to the community that if we're not convinced we've had a sufficient amount of success, NSW will have to take further action and that's a position I've been clear on from day one.”

The state-implemented restrictions could see people confined to their homes and only leaving to get basic necessities.

“There's no need to panic,” Ms Berejiklian said. “Supermarkets and essential things will still be available.”

Victoria’s Health Minister Jenny Mikakos indicated that the state was looking to implement its own measures to stop the virus from spreading.

“Everybody must understand that it is time to make some sacrifices if we are to save lives,” Ms Mikakos said.

Victoria’s Chief Health Officer Brett Sutton has refused to confirm or deny whether he’d advise Premier Daniel Andrews to put Victoria into lockdown.

“The Premier will take that case to National Cabinet and they'll make a call. The incredible story behind a 95-year-old’s age-defying brain

Olga Kotelko wasn’t your ordinary 95-year-old. Having begun competitive athletics at 77, Kotelko was still winning international events in the years before her death in 2014. Throughout her career, she won more than 750 gold medals. So, what was her secret?

Aga Burzynska, a US neuroscientist, was fascinated by Kotelko’s story. Studies conducted on the nonagenarian at the age of 93 showed a remarkably youthful looking brain which could perform remarkably youthful mental tasks. "Looking at the structure of her brain, I would not have been able to say she was 93. I would have placed her in her 60s,” Burzynska told Prevention.

Kotelko grew up working on her Ukrainian immigrant parents’ farm in Canada with 10 siblings before becoming a school teacher. Researchers believe the reason Kotelko’s brain was so healthy at such a late age was not only due to her love of exercise, but the fact that she was continuously setting herself challenges and never stopped learning new things.

Barb Vida, Kotelko’s personal trainer whom she credits in her memoir for her athletic success, offers some advice to over 60s wanting to take on a new physical challenge:

Don’t overdo it – Vida says she slowly built up Kotelko’s strength, balance and coordination with aqua aerobics before moving into more vigorous exercises.

Relax – Vida recommends yoga as a great way to release any physical or mental tension. "If you are able to calm your mind, you'll be able to relax and stretch your muscles further."

Do your research – Before taking on the world of athletics, Kotelko watched competitions and read up on activities such as discus and javelin.

Image: Patrik Giardino

Related links:

Woman who lives off fish and chips turns 102

78-year-old grandmother lifts weights like a pro athlete

Fitness inspiration from a 75-year-old tennis champion

Tiger and goat defy odds to become unlikely best friends

An unlikely friendship between a tiger and a goat who was supposed to be his dinner has charmed Russia.

In a zoo in the far reaches of Siberia, predator and prey have become best buddies. Amur the tiger and Timur the goat's charmed life started in late November, when Amur decided not to eat the goat unleashed into his enclosure.

The intention was that the goat would be a gastronomic delight, not a playpal. But instead the two animals appear to have bonded, sharing a food bowl and appearing to play with each other by romping through Amur's pen.

Before the new year, they had already drawn enough attention that the Primorsky Safari Park set up a live webfeed of the enclosure. But they rocketed to stardom when one of Russia's state-run television networks unveiled a 44-minute documentary ode to their friendship during the slow news week between New Year's Day and Orthodox Christmas on Jan 7, a time when all of Russia is on holiday.

"The situation is really weird. For three years running we have fed Amur a huge number of goats, rabbits, roosters and rams," said Dmitry Mezentsev, the general director of the Primorsky Safari Park, in a telephone interview from the zoo, which is in Russia's far southeast, seven hours ahead of Moscow.

"As a rule, Amur gets prey twice a week. My only explanation is that this couldn't have happened without interference of the higher power," the zoo director said.

The friendship started after the goat, seemingly unfazed that it was on the dinner menu, chased the tiger out of his sleeping place, a converted aviary, and claimed the comfortable area for its own. Amur, apparently confused that the goat was not properly submissive, went to sleep on the roof.

"Amur has never rejected prey before," Mezentsev said. "There was just one case when the goat given to Amur lived through the night. Amur ate him the following morning."

Since their first encounter, the pair have spent their days together, watched by an increasing number of Russians who want to see the strange match.

"Every morning Santa Claus brings a treat of apples and cabbage for Timur, and meat for Amur," the zookeeper said. The zoo has given up feeding goats to the tiger, instead switching to a two-rabbit diet, twice a week, and supplementing with other meats every day.

Timur and Amur enjoy playing with a ball, one snatching it from the other and running away, as the other tries to catch up, Mezentsev said. They are prepping for the 2018 World Cup, which will be held in Russia, he joked.

Amur, a Siberian tiger, has benefited from conservation efforts promoted by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The species, also known as the Amur tiger, is endangered, and there are an estimated 550 alive. But population levels have stabilised in recent years. Putin released three cubs into the wild in 2014. They drew headlines when one wandered into China and snacked on local farmers' livestock before returning to Russia.

First appeared on Stuff.co.nz.

Video credit: AFP TV

Related links:

Watch gorgeous toy poodle perform a perfect handstand

You won’t believe this new rug that’s an alarm clock

How to make your smartphone battery last longer
