“I couldn’t believe it": Man's incredible find in client's trash

A rubbish removalist’s tendency to upcycle and recycle his clients' trash has led him to a rare discovery.

Jesse Stewart, from Brisbane's Get It Gone Rubbish Removal, recalled the moment he was getting rid of an entertainment unit at the tip, when he found a mistakenly discarded medicine bottle with a wad of cash inside.

“I didn’t think too much of it but when I picked it up it was heavy, and I was like, ‘I wonder what’s in there’,“ he told 7News.

Stewart “couldn’t believe” his luck when he found out the wad of notes amounted to $7000.

“I’ve never found anything like that before," he said.

But being the good samaritan that he was, Stewart returned the money to its rightful owner, a woman in her 60s and his long-time client.

“She was so grateful. She couldn’t believe it,” he said, adding that she did not even realise she had the cash stashed away.

“She didn’t think anyone would be that nice to give it back, so she gave me a few hundred bucks, which was nice," he said, revealing that she gave him a $300 unsolicited reward.

While he did return the money back to its rightful owner, Stewart shared that he did think about keeping it.

“To be honest, my first thought was to keep it,” he laughed.

“The person who owned it has treated me really well over the last year of working for her ... I just felt too guilty, I could not keep it.”

This is not the Brisbane local's first interesting find, as his tendency to upcycle trash has led to a trove of treasures including a haul of rare Australian stamps, an electric scooter and an antique piano.

But, the cash definitely “took the cake”.

“I don’t think I’ll find something like that again,” he said.

Images: Facebook

"I couldn't save her": Husband's heartbreaking warning against weight loss drugs

A grieving father has issued a desperate plea against using weight loss drugs after his wife passed away from possible side effects just months into her treatment.

Roy Webster told 60 Minutes that his wife Trish simply wanted to lose weight before their daughter's wedding, so she decided to take Ozempic - a drug which was originally designed to treat diabetes, but is now being prescribed as a weight loss drug.

The 56-year-old mother lost 16 kilos from taking Ozempic and another weight loss drug, Saxenda, but she was also frequently ill and in January "something went seriously wrong".

"I couldn't save her, that's the hard part," Webster said.

"If I knew that could happen, she wouldn't have been taking it."

The heartbroken Aussie father added that his wife tragically passed away in his arms.

"She had a little bit of brown stuff coming out of her mouth and I realised she wasn't breathing, and started doing CPR," he said.

"It was just pouring out and I turned her onto the side because she couldn't breathe."

Trish's death certificate reveals that her cause of death was an acute gastrointestinal illness, although there isn't a direct link to weight loss drugs, Webster believes that they contributed to his wife's death.

"I never thought you could die from it," he warned other Aussies.

In the same interview with 60 Minutes, Endocrinologist Dr Kathryn William, said that there's "growing evidence the active ingredient in drugs like Ozempic can cause digestive complications."

"When we prescribe them, we warn people," she said.

"So if I say to someone, 'yes, it might be that you do vomit once or twice, but if you are having recurrent vomiting, you need to let me know and you need to stop the medication'."

The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) in Australia is investigating local cases and encourages people like Webster to report their concerns.

Webster also reportedly wants a coronial inquest to examine his wife's death.

"She shouldn't be gone, you know," he said. "It's just not worth it, it's not worth it at all."

Image: 60 Minutes

Hilarious reason dad couldn't be fooled by online scam

One savvy dad has outwitted a scammer who posed as his daughter, after the scammer made one hilarious error.

Ian Whitworth, a dad from Sydney, took to his LinkedIn page to share the message a scammer texted him in a classic phishing scam that targets parents.

He shared the photo of what he thought was the "funniest phishing text any parent has ever received".

The text read, "Hey dad, dropped my phone in the sink while doing the dishes. Its unresponsive this is my new number for now just text me here x."

Despite the terrible grammar and punctuation that would immediately alert anyone to the possibility of a scam, it was something else that caught the dad's attention.

Instead, Whitworth said it was the fact his daughter would never do the chore mentioned by the scammers.

Still, he thought it was worth sharing a photo of the text in a bid to warn others, which he uploaded along with the comment, "Cybersecurity update. I just got this."

"Perhaps the funniest phishing txt any parent has ever received. 'Doing the dishes', yeah, for sure."

In a reply to one of the people who commented on his post, Whitworth joked that his daughter "at age four emerged from my parents' kitchen with a shocked look on her face. 'What's pop doing?'. He was washing up in the sink."

Another commenter wrote, "Haha! There is NO WAY this is from my son or daughter, that's for sure."

Another commenter said the giveaway that it wasn't from his own child was that they didn't immediately ask for money, to which Whitworth replied, "Ha, yeah, the phishers are like the seven step ladder of confidence before the money issue gets raised. Actual kids: MONEY NOW."

According to the federal government's Scamwatch website run by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC), the "Friends/Family Hi Mum" impersonation scam was common.

"Scammers send messages pretending to be a family member or a friend desperate for money," it said.

"They say they have a new phone and they need you to pay money to help them out of a crisis."

Scamwatch warns: "Don't assume a person you are dealing with is who they say they are" and offers the following advice.

"If someone you know sends a message to say they have a new phone number, try to call them on the existing number you have for them, or message them on the new number with a question only they would know the answer to," it said.

"That way you will know if they are who they say they are."

Image credits: Getty Images / LinkedIn

4 musical duos who couldn’t stand one another

Working closely with a partner can create tension, especially when you’re working on a creative endeavour. Not all successful partnerships are built on mutual respect and admiration, and to prove it, here are four musical duos who couldn’t stand one another.

1. The Everly Brothers

Their music may still resonate through the years, but Don and Phil Everly couldn’t stand each other. “We only ever had one argument,” Phil famously said in 1970. “It’s been lasting for 25 years.” At a 1973 California concert, Don arrived drunk and messed up the lyrics to a song, causing an on-stage argument between the brothers. Those close to the Everlys suspect that Don resented Phil for his sweeter, higher voice, while others suggest that the pair’s father was a source of at least some of the tension.

2. Paul McCartney and John Lennon

According to various reports, McCartney and Lennon would go through periods of ice cold tension, only communicating through lawyers at some stages. But at other times, they were as close as brothers. Lennon revealed that he felt McCartney was subconsciously trying to “destroy my great songs”, saying that Paul would encourage an experimental sound during the recording and producing, while putting in hours of fine tuning on his own tracks. The two were reportedly on good terms before Lennon died, however.

3. Sam and Dave

This 1960s duo (made up of Sam Moore and Dave Prater) behind some of R&B’s most iconic hits, like “Soul Man” and “Hold On! I’m Comin’” could hardly stand one another. Though they did their best to hide the animosity on stage, their behind-the-scenes relationship was one of animosity, and they split in 1970. A good deal of the tension reportedly stemmed from the fact that Prater shot and wounded his own wife in 1968, while Moore himself suffered from drug addictions.

4. Simon and Garfunkel

One of music’s most iconic duos, Simon and Garfunkel met at junior school in New York, and began trying to secure a record deal in the early 1960s. Unfortunately, the tensions that simmered between the pair have lasted for decades, eventually breaking up over the release of their seminal album, “Bridge Over Troubled Water” in 1970. The pair staged a reunion tour in 2004, and were due to repeat the act in 2010 until Garfunkel suffered vocal chord damage. Garfunkel reported that Simon “wasn’t particularly” supportive during that time. But time seems to have cooled the quarrel. In a 2014 interview, Garfunkel stated that, “I’m used to the fact that we’re just different characters.”

Images: Getty

“You couldn’t pull it off”: Kochie grills Anthony Albanese over election promises

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has come under fire from Sunrise host David ‘Kochie’ Koch over two election promises the host says were broken in Tuesday’s federal budget.

Kochie brought up two promises Mr Albanese made to Australians before taking on the top job, including real wage increases and a drop in power bills by $275.

“Now, those two in this budget are a fail,” the Sunrise host said.

“What do you say to voters … you have broken two promises?”

Refuting that promises regarding wages were broken, the Prime Minister said the minimum wage had increased by 5.2 percent, with inflation at the time sitting at 5.1 percent.

“That is a real wage increase for minimum wage workers out there,” he said.

As for slashing power bills, Kochie pointed out that they were instead going up by more than half over the next year and a half.

“You said you’d save $275 a year on power bills, and now they are going up 56 percent over the next 18 months,” Kochie said.

“The Ukraine war has been going a fair while. We knew this was happening.”

Mr Albanese conceded that the war in Ukraine was one contributor to increasing prices while also attributing it to “failed energy policies” under the previous Coalition government.

“One [reason] is the Ukraine war, which has been going on for some time, that has flowed through into global prices,” the Prime Minister explained.

“We know global energy prices have fed into global inflation.

“In our competitors, many of them are looking at double-digit inflation. You are aware of that pressure.

“As well as that, we had 10 years of failed energy policies, we saw four gigawatts leave the system, and only one go back in. If you have less supply, that has an impact on price. That is why we are dealing with that through our Powering Australia Plan.”

Kochie didn’t let up though and questioned why Mr Albanese made the promise in the first place if he knew he “couldn’t pull it off”.

“But you shouldn’t have made the promise because you knew you couldn’t pull it off,” he said.

Co-host Natalie Barr also weighed in, pointing out that election promises influence who Australians vote for.

“When it comes to power prices, there are real pressures out there,” Mr Albanese continued.

“We understand people are doing it tough. We understand the power price issue is a difficult one. That’s why we’ve flagged the preparedness for further regulatory reform.”

Treasurer Jim Chalmers received similar treatment from the morning show host, with the war in Ukraine being a sore point.

“I think Australians understand, Kochie, that when you’ve got a war in Europe which is causing havoc on global energy markets, then that has consequences for electricity prices here in Australia,” Mr Chalmers said.

“I think people do understand that, and I think they also understand that renewable energy, it’s not just cleaner energy, it’s cheaper energy as well, that remains the case.

“What we’re doing in this budget is investing in new sources of energy, which is important over time, but we have also got necessary regulatory steps.

“There is more work to be done when it comes to the electricity market and we do understand these electricity price rises make it harder for Australians who are already under the pump, and that is why we are taking some of the steps that we are taking.”

In the new budget, the Powering Australia Plan will see $20 billion spent on upgrading the electrical grid, including connecting Tasmania’s Battery of the Nation, a network of hydropower and power stations, to the East Coast transmission network.

The government also plans to spend $224.3 million on a program delivering 400 community batteries to store excess solar energy, as well as $102.2 million on a program to help up to 25,000 households access solar-powered energy.

Images: Sunrise

Kyle Sandilands "couldn't give a s***" about Lisa Wilkinson's memoir

The radio shock jock has gone on a classic Sandilands rant on his radio show, slamming Lisa Wilkinson's upcoming autobiography.

Speaking live on The Kyle and Jackie O Show, Kyle admitted he "couldn't give a s***" about Lisa's 40-year media career that she has documented in her book It Wasn't meant To be Like This.

In her book, Lisa details her time on The Today Show, which came to an abrupt end in 2017 when she was outside after advocating for equal pay with her co-host Karl Stefanovic.

However, according to Kyle, there's not much interest.

"How exciting could her life be?" Kyle wondered aloud to his listeners.

He was also quick to dismiss her claim that she was paid less than Karl, saying this was common practice in the television industry.

"Just because you are working on the same show as each other doesn't necessarily mean equal pay, just saying. Sometimes they have to pay someone more because they negotiated it that way," he said.

'You don't just get what the other one gets. That's not the way the world works."

He also said, "She couldn't negotiate a decent salary, or her management couldn't, and she changed to a better network [Channel 10] where they paid her what they thought she was worth. That's all that happened. There's no badness or awfulness."

After calling her memoir "boring", he did admit that Lisa is "very good at her job" on The Project after parting ways with Channel Nine.

Kyle, who is good friends with Karl Stefanovic, said Lisa has marketed her book in such a way because "she's a journo... she's good at publicity."

Lisa's book, It Wasn't Meant To Be Like This, will be released on November 3rd.

Image credits: KIISFM / Instagram @lisa_wilkinson

"I couldn't breathe or talk": Natalie Bassingthwaighte opens up on her breakdown

Natalie Bassingthwaighte has opened up about the six-week breakdown she suffered last year and her road to recovery.

In a new interview with Stellar Magazine, the actor and singer revealed her epiphany began when she woke up feeling “frozen” in March last year.

“I couldn’t breathe or talk,” Bassingthwaighte revealed.

The night before, she was speaking to a colleague about their “full-on” work schedules. “We started talking about our kids and she said, ‘My son hates me; I’m always working’. Even though it may have been said in jest, it really hit me,” Bassingthwaighte recalled.

“The next morning, I couldn’t breathe. It was terrifying. I was curled up in a ball. That lasted six weeks.”

Bassingthwaighte said her breakdown could partially be explained by the precarious nature of her chosen career. Since her breakthrough in 1998 as a cast member of the musical Rent, Bassingthwaighte has continued to explore various paths in the entertainment industry, including acting (Neighbours, The Wrong Girl, Underbelly), music (dance band Rogue Traders) and talent show roles (So You Think You Can Dance Australia, The X Factor).

In 2017, she agreed to appear on I’m A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! after a long deliberation. At first, she asked casting agents if it would ruin her career: “I thought I might not be taken seriously again.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Natalie bassingthwaighte (@natbassingthwaighte) on Jan 29, 2017 at 12:43am PST

She added, “Financially, it had been quiet… In this industry people don’t talk about that enough. I know one high-profile actor who told me he’d been living in his car. Sometimes you only work three months a year, but the perception is you’re rolling in it.

“There’s a lot of fear in this industry. There’s always this façade, but everyone feels crap about themselves sometimes. I don’t even think of myself as a celebrity; I’m a person who works in an industry I sometimes love and sometimes hate. I didn’t only do the show for money, but... you have to pay your bills.”

She was also affected by a four-year long grief that she buried following the death of her friend and longtime agent Mark Byrne, who passed away from a heart attack in 2014 at the age of 45, as well as another close friend who died by suicide.

“After Mark passed, I was always searching: ‘Who am I? What am I good at? What am I supposed to be doing?’ Not having that person to speak to five times a day has been challenging. I was so lost.”

In an interview with Marie Claire earlier in February, Bassingthwaighte described her breakdown as “a very scary and emotional time”. She said, “I didn’t want to see anybody. I took myself off social media and closed down my email. I was broken.”

The mother-of-two – daughter Harper, 8, and son, Hendrix, 6 – said she had her “defining moment” when she received an advance copy of a magazine, of which she was on the cover. At that point, she had spent almost six weeks “curled up, crying” and was booked in at an event to deliver a speech.

She cried after seeing the cover that she shot three months prior to the breakdown.

“I was so joyous and happy on the cover, and now I had tears running down my face,” she admitted.

“That was a defining moment for me. So, that’s how I started my speech. I said that we all think life is perfect, and it’s not.”

From then, she began building a routine to help her cope, including reiki, acupuncture, counselling, kinesiology and antidepressant medication.

“The truth is, I was taking a very small dose of antidepressants and had done for a long time – around 20 years. Every time I tried to come off them, it didn’t work. I would get really panicky,” she said. “I slowly built myself back up. I went back on medication, just a tiny bit, but it’s the thing that worked.”

The 43-year-old, who is married to the Rogue Traders' drummer, Cameron McGlinchley, also started dealing with her grief.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Natalie bassingthwaighte (@natbassingthwaighte) on May 27, 2019 at 11:55pm PDT

“I hadn’t processed it, I didn’t deal with it. So in a crazy way, I’m grateful [the breakdown] happened because I’m in the best place I’ve ever been. I’m more grounded. I feel more together. My priorities are in the right order. I feel like this evolution has happened in me.”

She also incorporated pilates, yoga and mediation into her schedule.

“I meditate every day,” she said. “It’s changed my life. I’m inspired. I’m a much better mum.”

If you are experiencing a personal crisis or thinking about suicide, you can call Lifeline 131 114 or beyondblue 1300 224 636 or visit lifeline.org.au or beyondblue.org.au.

Olivia Newton-John reveals why she couldn't date John Travolta during Grease

It seems almost inevitable these days for co-stars who play lovers on-screen to then translate that romantic relationship to real life. But despite Hollywood having countless celebrity couples who fell in love during filming, Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta were never one of them.

Once the popular musical Grease was released, fans of the movie were desperate to see Olivia and John together but the two of them preferred to keep their relationship with each other strictly platonic, with Olivia describing her love for John as “sisterly”.

Now, speaking on Mamamia's No Filter podcast, the actress shared the exact reason as to why the two never ended up dating, and why it was beneficial for the both of them.

“We were both with other people when we were filming, and I think, respectfully, it just didn’t happen,” said Olivia, who played Sandy in the film.

“I think it was good, because I think it kept the tension there and the chemistry. It might have been a real disaster had we decided to date, or we had a falling out or something. So, I think it was just as well that it didn’t happen. But we’re still great friends.”

Olivia, who was 28 when she played the iconic role of Sandy, shared in her book Don’t Stop Believin’ that she believed “Sandy was someone else’s role” and she was close to passing it off.

But it was John who convinced her to give it a chance, as he told her: “There was only one person on this planet I could see as Sandy, and that person was Olivia Newton-John. I told the producers.”

That’s all it took for Olivia to sign herself up and the rest is history, with the 1978 film being a smash hit and still one of the most popular musicals today.

“We couldn't eat it”: Woman disgusted by what she found inside Coles’ roast chicken

A Sydney woman was disgusted to find green flesh inside her Coles roast chicken.

Kylie Mason, from Lithgow in the NSW Central Tablelands, posted a picture of the suspect-looking hot chook flesh on the supermarket’s Facebook page.

Ms Mason wrote she purchased the chicken for dinner on Tuesday night but “unfortunately, we couldn’t eat it”.

Coles responded to the post explaining why the inside of the chook was coloured green.

“This looks like deep pectoral myopathy (DPM). Deep pectoral myopathy is a green discolouration of the flesh caused by swelling from oxygen deficiency in the muscle,” the supermarket wrote.

“This can occur if the bird flaps its wings too much.”

Coles added while the green flesh is not harmful to eat, the supermarket said it has has “strict quality standards” and should not have been packaged. It also apologised and offered a refund to Ms Mason.

Ms Mason later replied the situation has been “rectified”.

In June, a Melbourne woman was also shocked to discover green flesh in an uncooked chicken purchased from Coles.

This was also a case of deep pectoral myopathy, Coles explained at the time.

Despite the disturbing greenish hue, University of Sydney Associate Professor Peter Groves, from the Poultry Research Foundation, supported Coles’ explanation, saying the green appearance “has nothing to do with salmonella or any other bacteria”.

“It looks horrible but it is not a food safety issue,” he told Yahoo7 News.

The Leigh Sales question Bill Shorten couldn't answer

Bill Shorten was the big guest on ABC’s 7.30 last night, and while the Opposition Leader was keen to spruik the benefits of his reply to the Federal Government’s Budget, presenter Leigh Sales wasn’t going to let him leave the hot seat without facing some tough questions.

In Mr Shorten’s budget reply, the Opposition Leader announced Labor would be supporting the Government’s tax plan in 2018-19 which includes tax cuts for low to middle income earners, but a Labor government would spend even more money spending nearly $6 billion on tax cuts over four years.

“Mr Turnbull wants to reduce taxes for the top end and I want to do a better deal for 10 million Australians — simple as that,” he said on 7.30.

But there was one noticeable absentee from the reply – any increase to Newstart.

“Since Budget night a number of senators have raised concerns about the fact that the Government didn’t raise the Newstart allowance. Even John Howard, who started Work for the Dole, said that Newstart should be raised.

“Why is Labor hiding behind a (previously announced review of the allowance) given they have money to spend?”

“I like that John Howard says he cares about Newstart now. He had a chance for 12 years, didn’t he?

“The issue of Newstart is real. Unlike the Government, I don’t pretend that you could live on $40 a day,” said Mr Shorten.

“So why haven’t you lifted (Newstart) tonight?” Sales persisted.

“One, we are not the Government and, two, we need to review the payment system,” Shorten responded.

“You probably didn’t notice in my speech I deliberately sent a message saying that job seekers living in poverty is an unacceptable set of circumstances.”

What are your thoughts? Did you see Mr Shorten’s appearance?
