Aussie street crowned "world's coolest"

Global media company Time Out have released their official list of the world's coolest streets, with one busy street in Melbourne's inner north coming in first place.

What makes a street cool? Well, according to the publication, each street's food offerings, drink options, cultural delights, nightlife and overall sense of community are the main factors that were taken into consideration when they made their list.

To create the 2024 lineup, the publication had their global team of local expert editors and contributors each make a case for the coolest street in their city.

Melbourne's High Street claimed the top spot local Time Out Melbourne editor Leah Glynn praising the road's "epic restaurants, hidden bars, live music venues and boutique shops".

Glynn said that the street’s “bona fide cool status” comes down to one thing - “its unique, something-for-everyone local businesses”.

The street itself is easily accessible from the CBD via the 86 tram line and criss-crosses the suburbs of Northcote, Thornbury and Preston.

Hollywood Rd, one of the oldest streets in Hong Kong came in second. Pre-dating LA's famous entertainment district, the street itself is home to incredible restaurants including Michelin-starred Tate Dining Room.

It's also home to the Man Mo Temple and the Mid-Levels Escalators, the world's longest outdoor covered escalator system.

East Eleventh in Austin came in third, as it "encapsulates the city's spirit" for packing so many venues in a short quarter-mile.

One other Australian street made it into the list of the top 30 coolest streets and that street is Sydney’s Foster St, which came in 23rd.

“Along with neighbouring Campbell St, it’s part of the inner city precinct known as the Hollywood Quarter,” Time Out said.

“Despite the dazzling name, the quarter brings low-key cool vibes, and is bordered by Central, Thai Town, and cool suburbs Surry Hills and Darlinghurst.”

Here is Time Out's Top 10 coolest streets:

High St, Melbourne

Hollywood Rd, Hong Kong

East Eleventh, Austin

Guatemala St, Buenos Aires

Commercial Dr, Vancouver

Jalan Petaling, Kuala Lumpur

Rua da Boavista, Lisbon

Arnaldo Quintela, Rio de Janiero

Chazawa-dori, Tokyo

Consell de Cent, Barcelona

Images: South China Morning Post via Getty Images

Surprising city dubbed Australia's coolest place

An American publication has given the title of "Australia's coolest city" to a surprising contender.

While most might think the crown would go to either Sydney or Melbourne, it seems the Wall Street Journal believes Adelaide is the coolest capital city in Australia.

WSJ reporter Emily Pennington penned the surprising winner of the title, saying the South Australian capital has more on offer to travellers than you might think.

"Sydney and Melbourne might pull in more tourists but Adelaide has quietly made its name as a go-to escape for gastronomes and nature lovers," she wrote.

Pennington cited the "compact" nature of the city being a major selling point, making it easy for travellers to explore all the best that Adelaide has to offer.

She wrote, "Despite such a compact footprint, the one-square-mile city centre is full of shops and restaurants. Beyond that, leafy suburbs give way to the Adelaide Hills, where koalas roam, and to the sea."

But what really tips Adelaide over the edge on the "cool" scale, according to the article, is its foodie scene, thanks to its proximity to both the ocean and lush valleys of locally-grown produce.

"Best of all it's supremely easy to wander Adelaide by foot, stumbling upon discoveries while enjoying long, post-food-coma strolls."

Predictably, the feedback on the article has been mixed.

"It's a good place if you like wine and or want to retire but that's about it," one person wrote on Instagram.

However, one Adelaide native who has been residing in New York for over two decades defended their hometown, writing, "I'll refer to this article next time a fellow Aussie says 'I'm sorry' when I say I'm originally from Adelaide."

World’s coolest neighbourhoods ranked

Travelling to a new destination gives us plenty to explore - from the tourist hotspots to the hidden gems found off the beaten track - and it’s these latter spots that have been ranked, with Time Out releasing its 51 Coolest Neighbourhoods in the World for 2022.

The fifth annual listing, created after surveying 20,000 city-dwellers and relying on expert input, is made up of “incredible places to be right now”, according to Time Out editors.

While we might not have cracked the top ten, there was still plenty of representation from Australia and New Zealand.

Fitzroy, Melbourne, took out the highest spot in 27th place, earning the “distinction of the second coolest street in the world” thanks to the retail stores, galleries, pubs, bars and cafes lining Gertrude Street.

Sydney’s Marrickville came in close behind at No. 33, garnering praise for its “healthy dose of creative colour”.

Kingsland, Auckland, came in 43rd, followed by Brisbane’s Fortitude Valley, which scraped in at No. 47.

The top of the list featured spots in Portugal, Cambodia, the US, Japan and Canada, with Colonia Americana, in the western Mexico city of Guadalajara, being crowned the coolest of them all.

Time Out travel editor James Manning said Guandalajara is an emerging “must-visit” spot, with Colonia Americana being “the place to be right now”.

“It's home to a boundary-pushing creative community, a growing number of amazing places to eat, and some of the best nightlife in the western hemisphere. As a culture, we value creativity and originality, which means we attract talent from all over the world—from food and drink, to fashion and design.

“Those talented humans find a home in creative microcosms like Fitzroy, where history and cutting-edge innovation culminate in something incredibly unique.”

Gertrude Street was knocked off the top spot by the “bustling” Rue Wellington in Montreal, Canada, which Time Out said has “killer cocktail bars, stellar brunch spots, some of the best sandwiches in town and even a sandy urban beach”.

Sydney's streets didn't make the top ten, but Newtown's Enmore Road placed 24th in the list, while Auckland's Karangahape Road came in 6th.

Check out the full list below.

1. Rue Wellington, Montreal

2. Two of the coolest places for a short break

Coolest? We don’t mean climate, otherwise we’d be talking about Australia’s High Country and snowfields — depending on the time of year. Or, our wonderful Tassie.

No, there’s the more modern meaning of “coolness” — not exactly favoured by those of us who grew up before the ‘60s, when “cool, man” was the statutory ending to every sentence.

So, Canberra? Orange? How do they qualify?

Each boasts unique attractions which make them a great place for a short break. And, while already easily accessible from Sydney by train, plane or car, Tigerair now offers direct flights from Melbourne and Brisbane to both regional cities.

Of course, there’s a huge difference between the nation’s capital and a regional city, but there are similarities as well.

The common defining factor may well have something to do with fresh country air, great regional produce and wine, a range of activities from very active to quite passive, and simply a surprising “vibe” — to use another of those ‘60s words that have crept into our language.

Let’s see what each city has in store:

Canberra

If you’ve thought of Canberra as a place for “serious” tourism — Federal Parliament, the Australian War Memorial, the National Gallery, and so on — you’d be right. Those places should be high on every Australian’s bucket list.

But you’d only be half-right. There’s another side to the city, which is attracting a new wave of visitors looking for fun, excitement, good food and wine — and lots of activities that will keep you busy with Facebook or Instagram posts for everyone back home to see. It's no wonder it's been ranked the third best city in Lonely Planet's Best in Travel 2018.

For example, hot air ballooning on a frosty winter morning is one way to get the pulse racing. It may sound a bit nerve-racking, but ballooning is statistically safer than driving down the street and it’s a lot more fun. In the hands of experienced operators such as Balloon Aloft, you get a wonderful bird’s eye view of the city and the picturesque countryside — a joyflight you won’t easily forget.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Em (@_capitalgirl) on Mar 11, 2018 at 3:09pm PDT

Ballooning is just for starters. Here are more fun things to do in Canberra:

Stay at Jamala Wildlife Lodge at the heart of the National Zoo & Aquarium. Here, you can choose a room or suite “up close and personal” with a lion, tiger, bear or cheetah — or next to a shark tank! Our favourite is the Giraffe Treehouse where you can feed the handsome Humbekhali from your balcony.

Take a Segway tour around Lake Burley Griffin — it certainly beats walking and the guides give an amusing commentary.

Try your hand at glass blowing at Canberra Glassworks, a unique workspace for glass artists where visitors can get arty and make a glass paperweight under the patient guidance of a professional artist.

Visit the new Capital Brewing Company in Fyshwick, an industrial area fast becoming a trendy urban precinct. Enjoy superb craft beers, and tasty food from the famous Brodburger food truck.

Spend an hour (or three!) at one of many wineries in the district. The closest to town is Mount Majura Vineyard and if you’re anything like us, you’ll want more than a sip of their excellent Tempranillo.

Dine at one of Canberra’s hot eateries like Italian and Sons, ONA Manuka for great locally roasted coffee, or Pialligo Estate on the banks of the Molonglo River which incorporates a vineyard, olive grove, market garden and smokehouse for a true gourmet dining experience.

Book well ahead for Floriade in September 2019 — one of Australia’s premier flower and garden shows, now in its 32nd year.

Orange

Many may remember the motor events of the past, at the Gnoo Blas car races, which set out to rival Bathurst’s Mount Panorama circuit with famous drivers like Jack Brabham and Bob Jane competing.

Today, motor events have given way to food, wine, art, and music festivals, attracting a very different kind of visitor. In addition to the usual procession of Sydneysiders and interstate grey nomads in shiny rigs, direct flights from Brisbane and Melbourne are bringing trendier lifestylers seeking new pastures for grazing and graping.

Regional wine is at the forefront of the “New Orange”. This is made apparent by a visit to the Orange Wine Festival, showcasing a huge selection of cool climate varieties from mainly family-owned boutique wineries.

The emphasis here is on high quality, limited production, with altitude the key defining attribute, along with the usual variables of terroir: geology, soils, climate, and temperature.

According to Justin Jarrett, President of the Orange Region Vignerons Association, the annual Wine Festival has had extraordinary success since it started in 1999; it now runs over ten days and last year’s attendance topped 23,000. That’s a lot of sips at the various venues, translating to the sellout of many vintages on offer. The bubblies were a particular favourite, encouraging the plantings of more grapes for Prosecco — popular with the Surry Hills and Carlton crowd.

But the city offers more than wine, of course. The foodie scene in Orange and nearby Millthorpe has been recognised with several Chef’s Hats, and top reviews at places like Charred, the Agrestic Grocer, and The Greenhouse in town; and Tonic, the Old Mill, and Le Billot de Boucher in the quaint Millthorpe village.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by The Agrestic Grocer (@agrestic_grocer) on Jan 11, 2019 at 2:24am PST

To top it off, there’s the Origin Organic Chocolate factory where you can make your own bespoke chocolate in a Masterclass, and pair it with local wine, beer, and cheese.

The ideal road trip

Perhaps the perfect way to spend a week or so would be to combine visits to Canberra and Orange in a single road trip — they’re less than four hours apart by car if you don’t dally along the way.

But then, you’d miss some beautiful country scenery and some excellent coffee stops. The sad past of Baddie Winkle, the coolest great-grandma on Instagram

We first became aware of “Baddie Winkle”, otherwise known as the coolest great-grandmother on Instagram, earlier this year. With a penchant for “groovy” and “rad” clothing that would rival any teenage wardrobe, the 87-year-old stole our hearts with her outrageous sense of style and an attitude to match.

Little was known about “Baddie” except for snippets posted to her Instagram, but now Helen Van Winkle, as she is known in real life, talks about her unexpected rise to fame that has earned her 1.1 million Instagram followers and a legion of fans.

She says in the video that to cope with the death of her husband and son, she began dressing adventurously: “You don’t know what’s going to happen to you. I blamed God forever. I cried all the time because I couldn’t come to terms with it, so I made myself over into Baddie Winkle.”

But she’s always been a big believer that dressing for your age is a bunk: “I don’t feel old. I have never felt old. I think you can dress any way you want to.”

Related links:

Why older women are the new icons of fashion

In pictures: how eyebrows evolved since the 1920s

10 handy hints for flattering your figure
