But I can’t imagine how it feels when your loved ones are away on active service over Christmas or at those special family moments.

“The absence of people you love must be especially hard at this time of year. Secrets to packing for an overnight trip

Josephine Lalwan is the owner of fashion blog Chic at any age, a fashion resource for women over 50 who want to learn more about style, fashion and what will suit them as mature women. Below is an extract from the London native's blog, exploring the best things to wear and pack for an overnight trip.

Preparing for an adventure often starts with the same thought. What to wear to travel in and what to pack in my overnight bag?

On Friday we are off to Marseille for diner and an overnight stay on our way to the South of France. We are planning to explore the city. I have never been to Marseille so am looking forward to visiting the museum and other interesting sites.

I have put together a capsule travel wardrobe based on navy, grey with touches of serenity blue. Plus, my fabulous new “Grosvenor” equestrian inspired shoulder bag. The Grosvenor is a combination of leather and nylon, which makes it super lightweight and ideal for travelling. It has a main compartment with zip and slip pockets. There is also a pocket at the back that secures with a popper to keep your essentials safe and secure.

I would describe Radley bags as practical and classic with a twist. Many of their designs feature a very British Scottie dog as an iconic mascot. (They do ship internationally).

See below my pick for the perfect outfit for winter travelling.

Below are the kind of items you should have in your travel bag. 3 new fashion trends to try this winter

Josephine Lalwan is the owner of fashion blog Chic at any age,a fashion resource for women over 50 who want to learn more about style, fashion and what will suit them as mature women.

Josephine shares her playful style tips with Over60 for the season ahead. To see the beautiful photographs, featuring Josephine herself, scroll through the gallery above.

1. The new trousers style

Trouser shapes have been evolving for many seasons. It seems that we have lived in skinny trousers and some of us leggings for years. Slowly, the wider shape trouser has vied with its skinny cousin for a place in our wardrobes.

This season the short wide leg trouser is a combination of the wide trouser and the ankle length capri. Thus creating the new style wide ankle trouser.

I thought I would dip my toes into this new trend. A bit like kissing many frogs until you find your prince, I tried on several wide leg ankle pants. Many were just too baggy and looked clown like. I finally settled on this pair by Finery London (not a brand I had heard of till recently). They have a slim high waistline (which works for me as I have a long waist). They fit well around the hips and are not too baggy.

The problem was what to team them with. I tried them with a simple 3/4 sleeve turtle neck sweater. Then for a more structured look I wore them with a waistcoat. Shoes were the biggest problem. They looked ok with flats but much better with these ankle strap sandals, weather permitting!

2. Long sleeve off the shoulder tops

I have always loved off the shoulder tops. I think I must have realised that it flattered my “pear shaped” figure. Not that I had heard of a woman’s body being compared to a fruit back then.

Some things definitely change and one of them is the shape of our bodies as we get older; the proliferation of those pesky wrinkles and certain muscles that have given up holding things together.

Luckily our shoulders seem to be immune from the above and can be an area that we can still continue to expose without looking too mutton. At least that is my opinion. As these tops are called “Bardot” I simply have to take mine with me on my next trip to St. Tropez. The one I am wearing is cotton by Whistles.

3. Lace and especially broderie anglaise

Lace and especially broderie anglaise has a romantic and “girly” feel to it. I remember wearing a gorgeous white broderie anglaise dress as a child. I loved it and was very sad when I finally grew too big to wear it.

However, lace and broderie anglaise can be worn in a sophisticated and grown up way as well. This depends on what other items you team it with and the accessories you use to finish the look.

I have teamed this very pretty three-quater sleeve white top with a tailored masculine style leather jacket and slim leg trousers.

I am pushing the boat out and being adventurous, for me anyway, with my shoes. They are gladiator style sandals with a block heel, but any boot will do. They have relatively high fronts and fasten round the ankles. This offers sufficient support to avoid the “wobble factor”.

Will you be giving any of these a go? Fashion tips for flattering the neck

Josephine Lalwan is the owner of fashion blog Chic at any age, a fashion resource for women over 50 who want to learn more about style, fashion and what will suit them as mature women.

I recently discovered the series Grace and Frankie on Netflix. It can be little over the top, but quite fun to watch on an evening when there is nothing inspiring on terrestrial TV.

Jane Fonda, who plays the character of Grace, portrays a chic and elegant style in my opinion. At times a little too classic for my taste but overall I like her look, especially the knitwear.

One aspect that particularly got my attention was how she continually wore her shirt collars up. I began to realise that this “trick” gave a flattering frame to the face. You would need to have a reasonable long neck for this to work for you. I do, so it seems to suit me. I have even started using it for some of my jackets.

Scroll through the gallery above to see some more examples of how Jane pulls of this look.

Have you been taking note of the fashions on “Grace and Frankie”? How to create a shabby chic photo frame (for a quarter of the price)

While furniture may be essential for making your house comfortable, it’s often the soft furnishings that turn a house into a home. Whether it be a canvas, large framed image or a selection of 8x4s, nothing personalises a space like photos. Not only a chance to share memories, framing photos also offers the opportunity to get creative and tap into your home décor to create something that adds to the room as a whole.

Shabby chic is all about capturing that rustic, gently distressed vibe. Perfect for homes with a coastal or more traditional decorating scheme, a shabby chic frame can be customised using colour to fit a range of different decors, at a fraction of the cost of a bought frame.

Here’s how to do it…

You’ll need:

A wooden picture frame

Two pieces of sand paper – one fine, one coarse

A broad bristled paint brush

Your chosen paint colour plus standard white paint

Directions:

If your picture frame is glossy or already has a coat of paint, start by sanding it back to create a clean surface. Leaving a glossy coat behind will make it tricky to create the distressed look you are going for.

Once sanded back, use a damp cloth to wipe away dust or any remaining residue.

Paint two coats of your chosen colour onto the frame and set aside to dry.

When completely dry, start sanding! You want to take the top layer of the paint almost off.

Wipe frame clean with a clean, dry cloth.

Dilute white paint with a ratio of two parts paint to one part water.

Paint onto the frame, working into the sanded back parts.

Use a damp cloth to both smudge in the colour and wipe some away to create a distressed look.

Set aside to dry.

You can seal with a clear gloss sealant if you choose to or simply allow to dry completely before using.

Related links:

DIY craft you can do with the grandkids

3 fab ways you can use Mason jars

Make your own (fancy) pin board for under $10

As easy-chic guide to setting the table

Instantly turn your next dinner with family and friends into a stylish soiree with these simple table decorating tips.

Table cloth and napkins
Create an instant sense of occasion by using a material table cloth and napkins for your next family get together or dinner party with friends. It’s a lovely way to add colour and texture to the table.

Place setting centre pieces
Rather than opting for one large centre piece for the table (which often obstructs your view of others at the table anyway), go for something to decorate each place setting. A little candle in a votive looks lovely – and you can even send these home with guests as a gift.

Flower power
No table setting is complete without flowers. Collect a lot of little vases and dot flowers throughout you setting across the entire table. A couple of statement vases in the centre of the table are equally as effective. We also love the look created by getting a single flower and trimming the stem – or using a twig of lavender or something alike – and tying it onto the napkin with string at each place setting. It makes for a rustic yet considered look.

Layer upon layer
Create depth and add interest to your table by working layers. Layer plates, a table runner on top of the table cloth and even your entrée plate on top of your main plate. It creates a full table, looks stylish and as it works with height, it will bring your table to life rather than it looking flat.
