Olympic champ unable to sleep following break in

Olympic swimmer Emily Seebohm has opened up about a frightening late night invasion at the home she shares with her fiancé David Gallagher.

Emily, who is now having trouble getting to sleep in the wake of the break in, told Seven about the ordeal, detailing how she and David had come to discover the worrying scene early on a Sunday.

“We had someone break into our garage yesterday morning between 5:30 and 6:30,” Emily said, before noting that while that was a normal time for her to be up and about on a weekday, on Sundays she preferred to have a sleep in.

“So, I didn’t hear anything, but we first noticed - when Ryan woke up and was heading to work at 9:30 - that the garage door was left open,” she continued. “Which is really odd, because I’m pretty meticulous about making sure that everything’s closed up and locked.”

Emily went on to share that she’d made sure the pantry door was locked before going to bed, as their garage led to the laundry, and to the pantry from there, providing access to their home. She was “very thankful for [that], because they couldn’t get into the house.”

However, as Emily pointed out, “somehow they did manage to get into all of our cars. Not sure how, we believe that they might have opened the garage door from Ryan’s car - he has a buzzer in his car - but why just open the garage? Why not open the gate?

“All of our keys were inside, so luckily they couldn’t steal any of the cars.”

But while the thieves had not succeeded in entering the house itself, they hadn’t gone away empty handed, with Emily revealing that “they did steal my wallet, my credit cards, basically everything in my wallet, and they rummaged through the cars.”

She and David had gone to investigate the state of the garage, but hadn’t wanted to disturb the cars and any potential evidence contained within them, and so they’d opted to leave the vehicles alone.

Emily did go on to show the vehicles though, both inside and out, noting the open glove boxes and items strewn across the front seats, as well as pointing out the spot in the door where her wallet typically sits.

According to Emily, it had been “very scary waking up to that” and that she “didn’t sleep well” the following night, but she had hopes that they’d get some answers soon, with police on their way to inspect the scene, and “hopefully get some fingerprints”.

Images: Seven

Steve Bradbury to the rescue! Olympic champ turns hero

Winter Olympic speed-skating legend Steve Bradbury has spoken up about the insane moment he jumped into a ferocious rip to save four teenage girls over the weekend.

Bradbury was out surfing with his 12-year-old son Flyn at an unpatrolled beach near Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast when he spotted a girl struggling in massive two-metre waves.

Without a second thought, the 48-year-old jumped into rescue mode. He told Flyn to hand him his board and swim back to shore and find the lifesavers.

"I knew that there was nobody else around to do the job and it was just one of those moments where the adrenaline started firing straight away,” he told Nine News.

Bradbury started making his way to the girl, Zoe, but was shocked to find three others with her.

The terrified look on Zoe's face is something Bradbury said he “can’t unsee”. He yanked her out of the water and onto the board, remembering the three others.

The huge rip made the rescue mission more difficult, to the point where Bradbury thought “they’re going to drown soon”.

"We were just getting pounded, wave after wave after wave. When the biggest waves hit us they all got knocked off the board every time.”

On shore, Flyn managed to find lifesavers some 800m from where the girls were drowning.

The lifesavers immediately grabbed the boat and made their way to Bradbury and the girls.

Zoe was placed on oxygen as she struggled to breathe and talk, while her friend Eva described the ordeal as “scary”, thinking she was going to die.

Bradbury took the opportunity to remind beachgoers to stay on patrolled beaches and to swim between the flags.

"The lifesavers are there for a reason and those flags are there for a reason and those girls shouldn't have been swimming there.”

Image: Nine News

Olympic swim champ arrested after sex with a minor

French swimming champion Yannick Agnel has admitted to having sex with a minor, a prosecutor said on Monday.

The 29-year-old, who won two gold medals at the London 2012 Olympics, was arrest at his Paris home last week on suspicion of rape and sexual assault, and taken into police custody.

Agnel “recognises the substance of the allegations against him,” Mulhouse public prosecutor Edwige Roux-Morizot told a press conference, adding the swimmer did not “sense that there was coercion”.

The prosecutor said the facts constituted “rape or sexual assault as there is a big gap in age” between him and the plaintiff, who has been named as Naome Horter: the teenage daughter of Agnel’s swimming coach.

The assault is alleged to have taken place in 2016, when the girl was 13 and Agnel was 24.

During the criminal investigation, the French Swimming Federation (FFN) announced they would also be launching a civil action case.

“The Federation has been informed of the admission by Mr. Agnel of ‘the substance of the allegations of which he is accused’. The decision was officially taken today to become a civil party before the judicial court of Mulhouse in this case, which the Federation deeply deplores.”

Rising to prominence in 2010 after setting a French championship swimming record, Agnel went on to win gold in the 200m freestyle and 4x100m freestyle relay at the London 2012 Olympics.

He went to Rio in 2016 to defend his title, but failed to advance through the heats, and later announced his retirement from swimming.

The lawyer representing a champion Olympic diver on charges of shoplifting and unlicensed driving has called for the media to be banned from court proceedings.

Robert Burns, Chantelle Lee Newbery’s lawyer, has accused the media of “opportunistic conduct”, claiming there would be little interest in the case if any other member of the community was involved.

“Were she not a person of some note who had achieved something for this country she would be of absolutely no interest to the press whatsoever,” Mr Burns told magistrate Zac Sarra.

“But for the fact that she’s been a gold medallist at the Olympics the press wouldn’t give a brass razoo.”

The 44-year-old is accused of stealing groceries from a supermarket in Ormiston, Queensland, in April last year, as well as from a store in Victoria Point in January and a Woollongabba supermarket last month.

Ms Newbery has also been charged with three counts of breaching bail conditions by allegedly failing to report to Cleveland Police Station in June and July.

When asked why Ms Newbery was not present in court, Mr Burns said “there was an issue with a potential application for closed court due to press involvement”.

“Every time this matter is before the court the press take an active interest in a matter which … if it were any other member of the community there would be little interest and it’s really opportunistic conduct by the press,” he said.

Mr Burns added that Ms Newbery had made mistakes and would take responsibility for her actions, but “shouldn’t necessarily be subjected to any additional punishment through what the press are doing”.

Mr Sarra said court proceedings would only be closed under extenuating circumstances, and that an application could be brought before the court that the press could respond to.

“I wish the press were here more often, Mr Burns, to be honest, to report the problems we have to deal with [like] the impact ice is having in the community, the increasing levels of domestic violence, many of the issues that are tearing this community fabric to shreds,” Mr Sarra said.

The magistrate also cancelled a warrant for Newbury’s arrest that had been issued by Brisbane magistrate Elizabeth Hall last month, which had not been executed.

Newbury’s matters have been adjourned to Wynnum Magistrates Court, to be heard on October 1.

Newbery won gold and bronze at the Athen Olympics in 2004 and became Australia’s first diving gold medallist in 80 years.

Image: Getty

He was born during the week, I don’t know what his name is yet.

“My wife is away down, she went down this morning,” said Erskine.

When asked if Sophia and Edie were excited about the arrival of their baby brother, Erskin said: “Absolutely. I’ve seen photographs on my wife’s phone.

“They’re both doing fine. Bathurst champ hits back at controversy as team radio audio is revealed

Bathurst winner Scott McLaughlin isn’t worried about being stripped of his title despite an investigation into his team’s alleged go-slow tactics during an intense race.

Officials are further investigating Supercars driver Fabian Coulthard’s “disgraceful” Bathurst 1000 safety car tactics after charging his ford outfit with breaching team order regulations.

Coulthard was initially hit with a drive-through penalty after he slowed down and held up the field behind his teammate McLaughlin, who went on to win the Bathurst 1000.

However, Coulthard now faces a fine or loss of championship points as officials are investigating whether his actions influenced the outcome of the race after following team orders to slow down.

“I didn’t know anything about it until the press conference after the race,” McLaughlin said to news.com.au.

“We did our bit. We had a fast car, we won the race, so we’ll just get on with it, it’ll sort itself out.

“It certainly wasn’t intentional from our point of view, Fabian was just doing something he needed to do, but I just pushed on.

“We had a great car all day and unfortunately for him (Coulthard) there is a bit of conjecture there, but he drove a great race and I feel bad for him, that’s for sure.”

It was the controversial talking point of the #Bathurst1000 🗣 Hear what was said on the Team Radio in Car #12 and Car #97 pic.twitter.com/QQACup5rcR
— FOX MOTORSPORT (@Fox_Motorsport) 14 October 2019

Critics weren’t happy when a then third placed Coulthard backed up the field as top two Jamie Whincup and McLaughlin fuelled up during the safety car period with 26 of the race’s 161 laps left.

Coulthard’s slow pace under the yellow flag, where drivers are not allowed to overtake, extended the gap between Shane Van Gisbergen and the leading duo from one to 47 seconds.

McLaughlhin went onto beat Van Gisbergen by 0.68 seconds.

Holden legend Mark Skaife told The Daily Telegraph the Ford man had nothing to worry about. “I have no doubt that Scott is the winner,” Skaife said.

“Scott was the fastest all week.
