"Stop slapping him!": Carriage horse collapses in busy street

The horrifying moment a carriage horse breaks down in the middle of a busy New York City street has angered animal activists.

Heartbreaking footage shows the horse's knees buckling, possibly due to the weight of the carriage it's been pulling all day in the heat, when it fell to the ground.

The driver could be seen shouting multiple times at the horse, known as Ryder, to “get up” and slapping it to get up.

“What if I slapped you around like that, bro?” one person can be heard saying.

“Stop slapping him,” another woman called out.

“I’m trying to get him up, alright,” the driver said, as he once again whipped the horse with the reins.

The driver then removed the carriage with the help of an onlooker as police arrived and sprayed Ryder with water.

Ryder then attempted to get up several times but failed until an adrenaline shot was administered.

BREAKING: This horse COLLAPSED while pulling a carriage in NYC, likely from heat exhaustion, and has been down for over an hour.

Horses don’t belong in big cities where they’re put in constant danger because of cars, humans, weather, and more. pic.twitter.com/vXBVRJRjPB

— PETA (@peta) August 10, 2022

After an hour or so, the horse was back on its feet and was taken to an unknown location to be looked at.

Tony Utano, President of Transport Workers Union Local 100 slammed those who attacked the driver for jumping to conclusions saying the horse, Ryder, was suffering from EPM.

“We thank everyone for their concern about Ryder, one of the beloved Central Park carriage horses,” he said.

“The veterinarian believes Ryder has EPM, a neurological disease caused by possum droppings.

“This is another example why people shouldn't rush to judgement about our horses or the blue-collar men and women who choose to work with them and care for them.”

However, this did not stop animal rights group PETA from calling out the practice, which constantly puts horses in danger.

“This horse COLLAPSED while pulling a carriage in NYC, likely from heat exhaustion, and has been down for over an hour,” PETA wrote.

“Horses don’t belong in big cities where they’re put in constant danger because of cars, humans, weather, and more.”

Many other supporters have called for the ban of carriage horses to be replaced with electric vehicles.

Images: Twitter

“These people are a******s”: Post about quiet carriage sparks heated debate

A reddit user has sparked a heated debate over the best way to approach people who ignore signs on public transport.

A photo of a woman talking on her phone while sitting in a “quiet carriage” on a Brisbane train was recently posted on the forum, with the caption reading: “These people are a******s and obviously should learn to read!”

In the snap, the woman is seen sitting directly underneath signs asking passengers to “please refrain from loud conversations, use of loud music and mobile phones.”

The image instantly ignited a heated response with users asking the poster why they didn’t approach the passenger at the time and ask her to observe the sign.

“If it p***** you off, tap her shoulder and let her know,” said one person.

“Don’t let them get away with it. They just get worse. A tap on the shoulder and ‘this is a quiet carriage, can you please get off your phone’ is what is required,” responded another.

There was also a debate over the context of the sign.

“It’s a quiet zone, not a total silence zone, a conversation at normal volume does not breach any of those rules,” said a user.

“Still seems strange to me that people always sit directly under a sign saying something along the lines of ‘please be quiet’ with no intention of being quiet whatsoever,” added another.

While reddit users couldn’t come to an agreement regarding etiquette in quiet carriages, Queensland Rail asks passengers who are travelling in quiet carriages to “refrain from having loud conversations, using mobile phones and noisy musical devices”.

And despite there being no penalties for having a conversation in a quiet carriage, Queensland Rail encourages all customers to respect those who may wish to take advantage of the service.

Vandals ruin antique train carriages used for popular TV shows

Vandals have caused “significant criminal damage” to antique train carriages that are regularly used in period television dramas including Downton Abbey and Dad’s Army.

The incident followed a '60s alcohol-fuelled festival which welcomed thousands to enjoy live music just metres away from where the carriages were vandalised.

It is believed the carriages were targeted because they were parked in a siding at Pickering according to North Yorkshire Moors Railway.

General manager Chris Price said, “We were absolutely devastated to discover that the carriages had been damaged overnight.”

“Until the set has been completely assessed we will not know the full extent of the damage caused.”

“I doubt very much that the set will run again in the 2017 season.”

Supporters have already donated hundreds of pounds towards the repair of the antique carriages, which is thought to cost thousands to restore.

The carriages, dating from 1930 to 1950, have appeared in various films and TV shows.

North Yorkshire Police said the vandals smashed windows to gain access to the train compartments and then proceeded to trash the carriages between 10 pm on Saturday and 7 am on Sunday.

The carriages are owned and maintained by the London and North Eastern Railway Coach Association (LNERCA), a charitable organisation that restores heritage coaches for use on the NYMR.

North Yorkshire Moors Railway, a historic line in Britain, takes visitors on journeys along an 18-mile railway line aboard steam and heritage diesel trains.

“What has been a busy and enjoyable weekend for all those involved in the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, has now been overshadowed by this mindless act of vandalism,” said North Yorkshire Police Inspector Martin Dennison.

“There is understandably a feeling of anger and outrage among the community and police are determined to find those responsible and bring them to justice.”
