Outraged Qantas flyer captures "absolutely unacceptable" act

Qantas staff have been condemned for leaving a pet crate abandoned on a Sydney tarmac in torrential rain.

An outraged passenger captured the moment she saw the pet carrier, and a trolley full of suitcases, left in the rain at Sydney Airport on Friday, and shared it to social media.

Sydney was hit with heavy rain on Friday, with some parts of New South Wales recording a month's worth of rainfall within a single day.

After passengers had been loaded onto the Qantas aircraft, the concerned traveller noticed the animal had been abandoned in the rain.

"Unfortunately the weather was unavoidable, but this luggage was left out in the open in Sydney for 30 mins and the animals for 15 minutes — one facing the rain," the furious passenger wrote on Facebook.

Travellers on the same flight were quick to comment on the woman's post, saying their luggage had arrived soaking wet.

"[I was on] on same flight, my luggage came home wet. Thinking a cover in these conditions would be nice," they wrote.

Others expressed their concerns for the animal left in the crate in the rain, saying it was "animal abuse" to leave a furry friend in those conditions.

"Those poor fur babies," one person wrote.

"I'd report this if I saw it. Should have brought this to the attention of ground crew ASAP."

A third added, "I'm unimpressed by the luggage but those pet carriers out there is absolutely unacceptable. I'd be fuming if my boy was stuck on the tarmac in a cage in torrential rain, making an already stressful situation even worse."

"Disgusting to leave those fur babies out in the rain. Almost animal abuse," another said.

A spokesperson from Qantas told Yahoo News that they are investigating the incident and that the airline "takes the safety and welfare of pets travelling with us very seriously".

"Do better": Baggage handlers captured recklessly throwing wheelchairs

American Airlines has been forced to apologise after two baggage handlers were captured recklessly throwing around wheelchairs.

The video of the staffers was captured and posted to TikTok, showing two men in hi-vis at Miami Airport throwing a wheelchair down a slide.

The chair hits the bottom with such force that it is catapulted off the chute.

In the caption of the video, the poster revealed it was not the first mobility device to suffer such a fate, as she wrote, "Dang, after I saw them do this and laugh with the first two wheelchairs I had to get it on film."

She added that it wasn't what she would call "handling with care" for a mobility device.

The video has racked up over 2 million viewers, with many flocking to the comments to share their thoughts.

"This makes me rage. Brisbane officer captured punching and tasering motorist

Footage of a brutal altercation between a police officer and a motorist has surfaced online following a catastrophic three-car crash.

The Queensland Police officer is captured on video punching the motorist through the window of his car in Strathpine in Brisbane’s north.

Police allege the “highly agitated” man was drinking from a wine bottle and was under the influence when the officer arrived on the scene.

“After the officer attempted to take the bottle away several times, it was allegedly thrown towards him,” a Queensland Police spokesperson said.

“After giving numerous directions for the man to remain in the car, it will be alleged he continued to attempt to leave the vehicle by kicking the door into the officer, who used physical force to contain the man in the vehicle.”

The heated exchange occurred around 1:45pm on June 22 after a collision at the intersection of Gympie and Samsonvale roads.

The officer is seen in the video approaching the passenger side of a white car where the motorist tries to leave the vehicle through the open window.

The officer is then seen grabbing at an object the motorist is holding, which police allege was a wine bottle, before allegedly hitting him multiple times.

The video shows the man retreat inside the car before making another attempt to exit through the window, where he is then struck again.

The motorist falls back again before trying to exit for a third time, blocked once again by the officer.

Police allege the man continued to try and leave the car and “after several verbal warnings, a taser was deployed”.

“Additional officers arrived on scene and another officer was allegedly spat on by the man,” the spokesperson said.

The man has since been taken to Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital while in custody to treat minor wounds.

The scene was not short of witnesses, with several firefighters seen approaching the officer.

“He needs to stop,” the woman filming the clip is heard saying.

“Stop hitting him!”

Senior police have reviewed body cam footage of the altercation as investigations continue.

New NASA images capture birth of a star

The James Webb Space Telescope continues to stun with its images of the universe following the release of an image showing a “fiery hourglass” housing a newborn star.

The image of the protostar (a young star that is still unstable and cocooned in a cloud of dust and gas) has offered scientists insight into what stars might look like “in their infancy”.

With the star located in the dark cloud L1527 and only visible in infrared light, the image was captured using Webb’s Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam).

The protostar itself is hidden from view within the “neck” of the hourglass shape.

"An edge-on proto-planetary disk is seen as a dark line across the middle of the neck," NASA said in a release.

"Light from the protostar leaks above and below this disk, illuminating cavities within the surrounding gas and dust."

The James Webb Space Telescope has captured a photo of a young star using its infrared camera. Heart-breaking image captures reality of rental crisis

A heart-breaking photo has highlighted the reality of Australia's rental crisis, with a six-year-old boy and his mother forced to live in their ute for four long months.

Mackay, a 38-year-old mum from Perth, and her son Charlie spent two years couch-surfing with friends and family after Mackay escaped an abusive relationship.

After continuously getting knocked back from rental properties due to Mackay's lack of credit and tenant history, the family had no choice but to sleep in their car during the freezing winter months.

Their situation got so desperate that Mackay put out a plea for help on their local community Facebook page.

Claire Orange, a therapist and co-founder of cyber safety program Digii Social, spotted the post and opened up her home to the pair.

"I instantly recognised Charlie's school uniform in a picture Mackay posted and contacted the school to understand their situation," Ms Orange said.

"I found out a rental would become available for them within a month and offered they stay with me while they waited."

Ms Orange, herself a mother of four, described Mackay as a "remarkable" mum who consistently put her boy first.

"I admire her terrifically for her fortitude and resilience," Ms Orange said.

"I cannot give this woman any more credit. She looked after her son exceptionally and made sure she did everything to keep him stable, healthy and clean."

"Taking him to school every day, cooking for him, putting up her small summer tent when the weather allowed so that they were able to sleep lying stretched out instead of bundled up."

"She's a remarkable, ferocious mumma who's put her child's needs first consistently."

Claire has since started a GoFundMe for Mackay and Charlie to get back on their feet, as they are "on the cusp" of moving into social housing.

The funds will be used to help Mackay and Charlie buy furniture and whitegoods for their home.

"Mackay and Charlie have been part of our family for the last month - and what a delightful gift they've been," Ms Orange wrote on the GoFundMe page.

"And now that a home is available - I'd love to give Mackay and Charlie enough money to start their new life together."

Australia is facing a major housing crisis with rental prices skyrocketing to keep up with soaring mortgage costs, with vacancy rates plummeting.

James Webb Telescope captures oldest galaxy

After its first images spread like wildfire across the internet, the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is believed to have broken the record for the oldest galaxy ever detected.

Scientists from the Harvard and Smithsonian Center of Astrophysics have identified a 13.5-billion-year-old galaxy called GLASS-z13, which dates to 300 million years after the Big Bang.

The previous record-holder was a galaxy known as GN-Z1, spotted by the Hubble Space Telescope in 2016, with its light taking 13.4 billion years to reach Hubble.

The team of researchers, who shared their findings in a pair of preprints published on Wednesday, also identified another galaxy, GLASS-z11, which is roughly the same age as GLASS-z13.

"We found two very compelling candidates for extremely distant galaxies," Rohan Naidu, one of the researchers who detected GLASS-z13 in Webb's data, told New Scientist.

The red circle captured by the James Webb Space Telescope is believed to be the oldest galaxy ever observed. Woman accused of killing pro cyclist captured in Costa Rica

The woman accused of fatally shooting pro cyclist Anna Moriah “Mo” Wilson, 25, has been caught by police in Costa Rica after 43 days on the run.

Kaitlin Marie Armstrong, 34, was found at a hostel on Santa Teresa Beach in Provincia de Puntarenas on Wednesday, the Marshals Office said in a news release, as they confirmed she will be deported and returned to the US.

Armstrong was wanted for the shooting of Wilson, who had previously dated Armstrong's boyfriend — 35-year-old professional cyclist Colin Strickland — in what investigators believe may have been a violent act of romantic jealousy.

The shooting took place outside a friend's home in Austin, Texas, on May 11th.

After a week in hiding, Armstrong used a fraudulent passport to fly from New Jersey to Costa Rica, according to the US Marshals Office.

Wilson’s family is still mourning the loss of their “beautiful daughter and sister,” who excelled as a biker and skier.

“Moriah was a talented, kind, and caring young woman. Her life was taken from her before she had the opportunity to achieve everything she dreamed of,” the family said.

Moriah was at the top of her game in the relatively new sport of gravel racing, and was just days from participating in the Gravel Locos bike race at the time of her death.

The day after the race, an event organiser remembered her on Facebook as a “role model, a shy compassionate person, a spirited tactical racer and a competitor that genuinely cared about those competing against you.”

Image credits: Instagram / US Marshals Office

Dramatic underwater rescue of unconscious swimmer captured in photographs

The dramatic rescue of Team USA swimmer Anita Alvarez has been captured by underwater photographer Oli Scarff in a series of photos that make for a moment-by-moment replay.

Alvarez was performing in the artistic swimming solo free final at the 2022 World Aquatics Championship in Budapest when, at the end of her swim, she became unconscious and sank to the bottom of the pool.

Head coach Andrea Fuentes quickly sprang into action, diving into the pool fully clothed and swimming down to grab Alvarez.

“It was a good scare,” Fuentes told Spanish sports newspaper Macra.

“I had to dive in because the lifeguards didn’t do it. I was scared because I could see she wasn’t breathing.”

Fuentes then brought Alvarez to the pool’s surface, where another swimmer helped take the unconscious athlete to the edge of the pool.

Alvarez was lifted out of the water and onto a stretcher so she could receive medical attention.

In a statement, Fuentes confirmed that Alvarez had a medical emergency but that “all is okay”.

“The doctors checked all vitals and everything is normal: heart rate, oxygen, sugar levels, blood pressure, etc … all is okay,” she said.

“We sometimes forget that this happens in other high-endurance sports.

“We have seen images where some athletes don’t make it to the finish line and others help them to get there.

“Our sport is no different than others, just in a pool, we push through limits and sometimes we find them.

“Anita feels good now and the doctors also say she is okay. Tomorrow she will rest all day and will decide with the doctor if she can swim free team finals or not. Thank you for all your well wishes for Anita.”

This isn’t the first time Alvarez has experienced a medical emergency in the pool, nor is it the first time Fuentes has saved her.

Alvarez briefly lost consciousness at the end of a routine while at an Olympic qualification event in Barcelona last June, where Fuentes dove in to rescue her.

The 25-year-old came seventh in Wednesday’s competition with a score of 87.6333, with Japan’s Yukiko Inui claiming victory having scored 95.3667.

Images: Oli Scarff (Getty Images)
