"You've been bumped": Vietnam vet slams Qantas for booting him from business class

Qantas has come under fire for booting a Vietnam war veteran from his paid seat in business class so that a young Qantas "tech" – later revealed to be a pilot – could travel in the luxury seat in his place.

Stephen Jones, 78, and his wife were travelling home to Adelaide after a holiday in Christchurch. Their flight was passing through Melbourne on its way to their home in Adelaide, and the pair were enjoying coffee in the Melbourne airport lounge – just 30 minutes before they were set to continue their journey – when they were given the bad news by Qantas staff.

"I went up to the desk and the Qantas employee there said, 'I've got some bad news for you, you've been bumped'," Mr Jones told Melbourne’s 3AW radio program with Ross & Russ.

"It didn't register at first," continued Mr Jones. "I wasn't quite sure what 'bumped' meant... I said, 'What?', and she said, 'Yes, I'll have to re-issue your ticket for economy class. We have a tech who's flying to Adelaide and his contract states that he must fly Business Class."

Mr Jones then explained that while he retreated to his economy seat, the Qantas employee was seated next to his wife up in business class, and that "he wouldn't even look at her".

Mr Jones went on to explain that, after filing a letter of complaint, he was offered 5000 Frequent Flyer points in return for the downgrade and an apology.

Mr Jones, who served in Vietnam in a combat unit in the 1960s, claimed he turned down the offer of 5000 points, saying, “I don’t think anything is going to change until there’s ramifications for Qantas, or costs for Qantas when they upset their customers.”

Justin Lawrence, Partner at Henderson Ball Lawyers, later told the 3AW radio show hosts that there’s little customers can do about such a move by the airline and said it was “standard operating procedure”.

“Unfortunately, their terms of carriage allow them to do this sort of thing – this happens so often they’ve actually got a term for it, buckle up, they call this 'involuntary downgrading,'” he said.

“They’ll overprescribe business class or first class, they will need to bump someone out, and they’ll do it almost immediately prior to the flight – not just Qantas, they all do it."

“Any time you go to a travel agent or online to Qantas to buy a seat, and we think we’re buying a seat in a particular class, there are no guarantees that when that plane takes off, you’ll be sitting in that class.”

Mr Jones said he understood that Qantas pilots were entitled to rest comfortably on their way to another flight, but the ordeal was “unsettling and made me a little irritable”.

"Little bump in the road": Olympian shares joyous news

Australian swimming sensation Emily Seebohm and former reality TV star Ryan Gallagher have made quite the splash with their pregnancy announcement. In a video that had everyone saying, "Aw!" and reaching for their tissues (mostly to wipe away tears of laughter), Seebohm proudly displayed her baby bump while Gallagher mimicked her with his own not-so-impressive belly.

With Ed Sheeran's "Perfect" playing in the background, Seebohm, sporting an unbuttoned white shirt and jeans that were unbuttoned for extra effect, radiated joy as she embraced and smooched her soon-to-be baby daddy. She captioned the post, "We've had a little bump in the road 👶🏼." No pun intended, of course.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by ᴇᴍɪʟʏ ᴊᴀɴᴇ ꜱᴇᴇʙᴏʜᴍ 🦋 (@emcbomb)

Now, let's talk about Gallagher's side of the story. Workers eligible for $10,000 salary bump in federal budget revealed

Treasure Jim Chalmers has revealed the frontline workers who will receive a hefty pay rise in the federal budget to help with the cost of living pressures and improve equal pay for women.

Some frontline workers will see a pay rise of $10,000 a year under the historic changes.

It is part of the biggest pay rise to date for aged care workers that will distribute pay rises to 250,000 people working on the frontline to care for older Australians.

Those eligible include nurses who could receive an extra $200 a week, enrolled nurses, assistants in nursing, personal care workers, head chefs and cooks, recreational activities officers (lifestyle workers) and home care workers.

Under the changes, the following will secure a significant pay rise for working in aged care.

A registered nurse on a level 2.3 aware wage will receive an additional $196.08 a week (more than $10,000 a year)

An enrolled nurse on a level 2 award age will receive an additional $145.54 a week (more than $7500 a year)

An assistant in nursing on a level 3 award wage will receive an additional $136.68 a week (more than $7100 a year)

A personal care worker on a level 4 (aged care award) or a home care worker on a level 3.1 (SCHADS award) will receive an additional $141.10 a week (more than $7300 a year)

A recreational activity officer on a level 3 (aged care award) will receive an additional $139.54 a week (more than $7200 a year)

A head chef/cook on a level 4 (aged care award) will receive an additional $141.12 a week (more than $7300 a year)

A staff member with a Certificate III qualification will see a change from $940 per week to $1,082

Treasurer Jim Chalmers said it was hoped the investment would help the industry retain staff and lure new employees to the sector.

“Every worker deserves a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work and that’s what this will deliver for thousands in aged care across the country,’’ he said.

“For too long, those working in aged care have been asked to work harder for longer without enough reward but with this Budget, that changes.

“This investment recognises the incredible contribution that aged care workers make to our economy and community and will help to create a bigger incentive for young Australians looking for a rewarding career to pick aged care in the future.”

Anika Wells, Minister for Aged Care, said the increase in pay reflected that aged care was physically and emotionally demanding work.

The 15 per cent pay rise means that a staff member with a Certificate III qualification moves from earning only $940 per week to $1,082.

“This record $11.3 billion investment is a historic and deserved pay rise for a workforce undervalued for far too long,’’ she said.

“Fair wages play a major role in attracting and retaining workers to provide around the clock care for some of Australia’s most vulnerable people.

Health and Aged Care Minister Mark Butler said the pay rise would make history.

The wage increase is designed to help women and families struggling with the cost of living crisis and ensure that quality aged care workers are less inclined to consider leaving the sector over pay concerns.

“Our commitment is long overdue recognition of the skilled work our aged care workers deliver day in, day out,’’ he said.

Other workers in the budget are expected to include older Australians who are seeking employment and they will receive pay rises if they are over 60 but not yet eligible for the aged pension.

The Albanese Government are also expected to boost payments for single parents after former Prime Minister Julia Gillard introduced changes to force parents - particularly women - to return to work earlier.

Lumps, bumps and oil slicks: what your skin is really trying to tell you

It is common knowledge to drink water, cleanse, tone and moisture to ensure your skin is healthy, but sometimes these methods aren’t enough. Skincare expert and touch therapist, Sarah Jones, believes that skincare starts from the inside and her approach is based around the idea that your skin reflects the tensions and emotions in your life.

“Have you ever noticed that your skin reacts badly when you’re under stress? I can sometimes point to a spot and say, 'This is from that terrible traffic jam I got stuck in yesterday.' Or when you’re giddy with good news, people often comment on your skin, saying you’re “glowing”. Don’t underestimate how emotions play a huge role in how our skin behaves,” Sarah said.

Sarah explains the emotions behind common skin complaints.

Dry skin

Sarah suggests that dry skin can be linked to deep-rooted stress, self-criticism and a little sadness. This is common in those who are caring and help others but tend to forget to look after themselves. Be sure to look after yourself even if it is escaping to have a bath, and if you need to talk to someone, speak to a trusted friend or counsellor.

Cold sores and breakouts

Both of these skin problems can be an indication of unexpressed anger. Sarah explains that cold sores and spots are nature’s way of communicating that you have gotten off balance.

Eczema

Eczema, which causes crusting and red patches on the skin, is tedious to treat and can be a real battle to overcome. Sarah believes eczema can be a signal that you feel suffocated in your thoughts and emotionally overwhelmed. She suggests writing down how you feel and finding ways to tackle each emotion.

Oily skin and acne

Those who have oily skin are prone to large pores and regular but small breakouts. Sarah suggests that this can be a sign that you are not relaxed and you put a lot of pressure on yourself. You may also be prone to highly critiquing yourself. Be sure to focus on your confidence and surround yourself with people who encourage you.

Images: Getty

"I couldn't feel my bump anymore": Woman in COVID coma wakes to newborn twins

A UK woman who was pregnant in a coronavirus coma woke up to a surprise as she had given birth.

Perpetual Uke was six months pregnant when she fell ill with the virus in March, and feared she would be unable to safely deliver her children.

She was put in an induced coma for almost a month.

Doctors quickly decided that it would be safer to deliver her twins via a premature caesarean and brought the children into the world on April 10th, while Perpetual remained unconscious.

When she woke from her coma 16 days later, she was convinced she had "lost" her pregnancy.

"I was pregnant at 24 to 25 weeks, at that stage, and by the time I woke up, I was so disorientated," she told Sky News.

"I thought I'd lost my pregnancy because I couldn't see my bump any more. I was really worried and disorientated."

Her twins Sochika Palmer and Osinachi Pasal were cared for in the neonatal intensive care unit for 116 days.

Uke's husband Matthew told the BBC, "Every passing day I was hoping my wife was not among those who are dead."

"We are a team, the idea she might not be there was really difficult to accept."

Perpetual was "very emotional" when she met her twins for the first time.

"I was happy that we were all alive, but obviously concerned about their severe prematurity which has its own risks," she said to The Express and Star.

After the coma, she was "so confused" that the children were hers.

"When they showed me the pictures, they were so tiny, they didn't look like human beings, I couldn't believe they were mine," she said.

The happy family are "getting better" each day after an intense almost three months in the ICU.

“We’ve had our bumps”: Georgie was always leaving with Karl returning to Today

Karl Stefanovic has announced that he will be returning to Today in 2020, but it’s alongside Allison Langdon and not his former co-host Georgie Gardner.

This came as a shock to some, as they have previously worked together on the show, but some believed that their union was doomed from the start.

It was reported that Gardner had quit her role in 2014 after getting tired of Stefanovic’s blokey on-air antics.

She acknowledged that the duo have had their “bumps” when it was announced that they were co-hosts in November, 2017.

“I’m assuming with you we pick up where we left off. Kerri-Anne Kennerley’s controversial “speed bumps” comments generate official complaints

Comments made by Studio 10 host Kerri-Anne Kennerley have landed her in hot water, as official complaints have been lodged to the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).

In a statement to Yahoo Lifestyle, the media authority confirmed that complaints were made over Kennerley’s comments on the Extinction Rebellion protesters.

Her comments suggested that protestors be used as “speed bumps” as well as being left in jail without food.

“The ACMA has received four complaints regarding the comments made by Ms Kennerley regarding Extinction Rebellion protesters,” a spokesperson told Yahoo Lifestyle.

The comments made by Kennerley were part of a panel discussion over the arrest of protesters who are disrupting traffic as part of the week long “Spring Rebellion” climate change protests.

“Personally, I would leave them all super glued to wherever they do it,” Kennerley said, adding that emergency services should not be aiding the protesters.

“No emergency services should help them, nobody should do anything, and you just put little witches hats around them, or use them as a speed bump.”

Despite Sarah Harris, another Studio 10 co-host saying that Kennerley’s comments were going to get them into trouble, she did not hold back.

“Put them in jail, forget to feed them,” Kennerley continued.

“(Or) some of the aged care homes around Australia, that would really sort them out.”

However, in a statement obtained by Junkee, Channel 10 have stood by Kennerley’s comments, saying that they were “in jest”.

“This morning on Studio 10 Kerri-Anne Kennerley made comments regarding climate protesters that were said in jest. Before the show concluded, Sarah Harris reiterated the tone of her remarks, affirming that Kerri-Anne wasn’t inciting violence.

“Kerri-Anne confirmed that she was indeed speaking in hyperbole and her words were clearly a joke. There was no intent to cause offence. Over the past few days, Studio 10 has extensively addressed a range of opinions on this subject.”

ACMA refers complaints to the broadcasters initially, and will only take action if after 60 days, no response has been issued from the broadcaster. ACMA can also move forward with complaints if they are not satisfied with the response.

“Use them as a speed bump”: Kerri-Anne Kennerley slams climate change protesters

Controversial Studio 10 host Kerri-Anne Kennerley has slammed climate change protesters and urged motorists should “use them as speed bumps”.

She made the comments this morning on the show after a news story about arrests of Extinction Rebellion protesters who were disrupting traffic and services across the country as part of a week long “Spring Rebellion”.

“Personally, I would leave them all super glued to wherever they do it,” she said.

“The guy hanging from the Story Bridge. Why send emergency services? Leave him there until he gets himself out. No emergency services should help them, nobody should do anything, and you just put little witches hats around them, or use them as a speed bump.”

Kennerley quickly realised she might have gone too far.

“Oh, we’re going to get into trouble! Is that wrong?”

She quickly added:

“Put them in jail, forget to feed them. Some of the aged care homes around Australia, that would really sort them out.”

Extinction Rebellion spokesman James Norman has condemned Kennerley’s comments, and spoke to news.com.au about their impact.

“Kerri-Anne Kennerley really should think very carefully before making such statements about the impacts they could have. The motivation behind Extinction Rebellion is just to draw attention to the climate emergency, and we always seek to do so in a disruptive but strictly nonviolent manner.”

Mr Norman added, “Respect for other people is at the centre of our ethos and principles, and I would hope other people, especially public commentators, would approach us with the same level of respect for common decency.”

Kennerley’s comments come after Queensland Premier Annastacia Palazszuk has said “enough is enough” and that she wants protesters to be sent to jail.

“Most people do the right thing, it’s just this group who need to be brought under control,” she said to The Courier-Mail.

Revealed: Why we never saw Queen Elizabeth’s baby bump

Not many may notice it, but the public or press have never been treated to pictures of Queen Elizabeth with a ‘baby bump,’ although she gave birth four times.

Her Majesty’s pregnancy was never closely photographed - which is a strange notion considering the more recent royal pregnancies, since Princess Diana, have been closely followed.

However, their is a reason why Queen Elizabeth kept her growing tummy away from the spotlight and it is mainly due to the taboo nature of pregnancies at the time.

As reported by the New York Times, Buckingham Palace released a mysterious statement in 1948, explaining the then 22-year-old Princess Elizabeth had fallen pregnant without either confirming or denying the fact.

"Her Royal Highness the Princess Elizabeth will undertake no public engagements after the end of June," the statement read.

Five months later, the royal welcomed baby Prince Charles on November 14.

Interestingly enough, there were no hospital step photos or “first photos” of the royal baby - instead, Princess Elizabeth remained hidden for a month.

Her Majesty was reportedly in labor for 22 hours before having to go under an emergency caesarean at Buckingham Palace.

It is widely believed that Prince Philip was not in the room with her as he had been playing squash at the time of his first born’s arrival.

The Queen later gave birth to her first and only daughter, Princess Anne in 1950 at Clarence house, then Prince Andrew in 1960 and Prince Edward in 1964 both back at Buckingham palace.

Princess Diana was the very first royal to ever give birth at a hospital - one of many traditions she broke while pregnant with her first son, Prince William who was born at the Lindo Wing at St Mary’s hospital.

She reportedly told biographer Andrew Morton the stress from press was “unbearable.”

It is reported by biographer, Andrew Morton that she told him "I couldn't handle the press pressure any longer, it was becoming unbearable.

"It was as if everybody was monitoring every day for me."

Scroll through the gallery to see the Queen Elizabeth with her four children.
