Aussie actresses clean up at the Golden Globes

<p>Awards season has officially kicked off in Hollywood, with A-listers flocking to the Los Angeles Beverly Hilton Hotel on Monday for the 81st annual Golden Globes. </p> <p>With the very best of the best in the entertainment industry nominated for the best film and television moments of 2023, some of our own Aussie talent walked away with some of the biggest awards of the night. </p> <p>Aussie actress Elizabeth Debicki emerged as an early winner for the TV categories, taking home the award for Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal of Princess Diana in <em>The Crown</em>. </p> <p>She beat out the likes of Meryl Streep (for her role in <em>Only Murders in the Building</em>) and Hannah Waddingham (for her role in <em>Ted Lasso</em>) for the award, as she has long been praised by royal fans for her touching portrayal of the late Princess of Wales' last years. </p> <p>Also coming out on top in another television category was Aussie actress Sarah Snook, who was the recipient of one of the biggest honours of the night, Best Actress in a drama, for her incredible performance in the final season of <em>Succession</em>.</p> <p>Meanwhile for outstanding achievements in film, Margot Robbie and the whole <em>Barbie</em> team took home the inaugural Cinematic and Box Office Achievement award, following the global hype of Barbie mania back in July. </p> <p>Margot was also nominated for Best Actress in a musical or comedy for <em>Barbie</em>, but was ultimately pipped by Emma Stone for her incredible performance in <em>Poor Things</em>.</p> <p>Elsewhere in the awards, <em>Oppenheimer</em> came out on top with Cillian Murphy taking home the award for Best Actor for portraying scientist J. Award-winning soap actress dies at age 70

<p dir="ltr">Nancy Fragione has died at the age of 70. </p> <p dir="ltr">The award-winning actress was best known for her starring role on <em>All My Children</em>, in which she played Tara Martin from 1977 to 1979. </p> <p dir="ltr">According to an online obituary, Fragione passed away on August 18th in her native Massachusetts, however her cause of death is still unknown. </p> <p dir="ltr">The actress is remembered for her iconic portrayal of villainess Cecile de Poulignac in <em>Another World</em> from 1981 to 1984, in the role that earned her a Soap Opera Digest award for outstanding villainess in a daytime soap opera.</p> <p dir="ltr">Fragione was revered by soap opera lovers, with devastated fans taking to X, formerly known as Twitter, to express their grief over her passing. </p> <p dir="ltr">"One of the most famous villainesses in soap opera history has passed away," one fan expressed.</p> <p dir="ltr">"Nancy Fangione was truly a soap icon," another said.</p> <p dir="ltr">The soap star also had a string of primetime television credits to her name including a guest starring role as Fran Fine's cousin Marsha on <em>The Nanny</em>, <em>Highway To Heaven</em>, <em>Matlock</em> and <em>Buck Rogers</em>. </p> <p dir="ltr">Nancy met her husband, Christopher Rich, on the set of <em>Another World</em>, as the co-stars married in 1982. </p> <p dir="ltr">The pair welcomed one daughter, Mariel, together during their marriage but ultimately divorced 14 years later in 1996.</p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Image credits: Instagram</em></p>

Behind Aussie actress’ secret wedding

<p dir="ltr">Australian actress Emily Browning has finally confirmed her marriage in a collection of photos shared by her husband, writer and director Eddie O'Keefe.</p> <p dir="ltr">O’Keefe took to Instagram on Monday to share photos of their wedding in April, after years of fans' speculation that the pair were getting married.</p> <p dir="ltr">"Wedding Dump 1", he captioned the first round of photos, hard launching their relationship with a photo of them sharing their first kiss as a married couple.</p> <p dir="ltr">Browning, who is known for her role as Violet Baudelaire in the 2004 version of A Series of Unfortunate Events, looked stunning in a Barbie pink gown with a simple white veil.</p> <p dir="ltr">The pair were not afraid to add colour to their wedding, with the groom donning a burgundy suit as friends and family threw colourful confetti to celebrate the couple.</p> <blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; Tragic accident claims pregnant Hollyoaks actress at just 38

<p dir="ltr">Former <em>Hollyoaks</em> actress, best known for her role at Jess Holt on the Channel 4 series, has died at 38. </p> <p dir="ltr">The actress was reportedly travelling with her two sons and nephew when she stopped to answer a phone call on the M66 hard shoulder near Greater Manchester in the United Kingdom. </p> <p dir="ltr">The 38 year old - who is believed to have been 18 weeks pregnant at the time of the incident - was then struck by a speeding vehicle. Frankie, her nine-year-old son Tommy and two-year-old Rocky, as well as her four-year-old nephew Tobias, were all airlifted to hospital. </p> <p dir="ltr"><em>The Mirror </em>have reported that Tommy and Tobias were put into medically included comas, while Frankie sadly passed away with her partner, Calvin, “frantically by her side”. </p> <p dir="ltr">The devastating crash occurred on May 14, but the news has only come to the public’s attention since Frankie’s former co-star, Paul Danan, paid a series of emotional tributes on social media. </p> <p dir="ltr">Frankie had been on <em>Hollyoaks </em>between 2000 and 2001, where Paul had had the honour of playing her character’s boyfriend, Sol Patrick. </p> <p dir="ltr">Paul shared pictures of their time together working on <em>Hollyoaks</em>, as well as some more recent pictures of his late friend, along with the caption “I just heard the most shocking upsetting news I've heard in such a long time. </p> <p dir="ltr">“Another good good friend who was such a special person has sadly passed away while carrying her unborn baby and her 2 little boys and nephew who were in the car too. To the Manor Born star passes away

<p>The family of Angela Thorne has paid tribute to the veteran actress who passed away on June 16 at age 84.</p> <p>Thorne is best known for her role in the British sitcom, <em>To the Manor Born.</em> The actress is also the mother of the actor Rupert Penry-Jones.</p> <p>Rupert Penry-Jones said in a statement, "The actress Angela Thorne died peacefully at her home on the 16th of June. Aussie actress in catastrophic bus crash offered $16 voucher as compensation

<p>An Aussie tourist left injured and stranded after a fatal bus crash in southern Italy has claimed the travel company only offered her a meal voucher for the inconvenience.</p> <p>Australian actress Sinead Curry, who has starred in TV shows like The Haunting of Nancy Drew and DC’s Legends of Tomorrow, said that nine hours following the crash, the European bus company offered her a $16 meal voucher for her troubles.</p> <p>Curry and partner Salma Salah, both from Sydney, boarded the FlixBus in the city of Bari on June 3 for the long journey to the Northern city of Bologna with a transfer to Rome.</p> <p>However, two hours into the trip Curry said the “bus hit something”.</p> <p>“We were all asleep, it went airborne and spun around a bunch of times,” she said in a TikTok video posted the following day, showing her in hospital wearing a neck brace.</p> <p>Curry told followers the bus was “flung around like in a blender” before it landed down by an embankment, which she claimed was “on the other side of the road”.</p> <p>“Several cars then hit the bus moving the bus closer and closer to the side of the road,” Curry explained in her video.</p> <p>Italian and German media reported the bus crash occurred near the town of Avellino, approximately 50km east of the southwest city of Naples.</p> <p>Five cars were caught up in the accident and local emergency services were quoted as saying the “lifeless body of a man was found” along with 14 people sustaining injuries.</p> <p>Curry said there were 38 people on the bus, including another Aussie woman called “Caity”, who suffered a broken collarbone.</p> <p>After Curry was discharged from the hospital, fearing her nose was broken but was assured it was not, she made another video emphasising how she felt abandoned by the bus company.</p> <p>“FlixBus none of your numbers are working,” an emotional Curry urged.</p> <p>“They ring out and they hang up on us. We cannot get any information from FlixBus, we cannot get our luggage back.</p> <p>“They offered us by text a 10 euro ($16) meal replacement voucher for the inconvenience.</p> <p>“There are a bunch of people here who nearly died we don't have any information.”</p> <p>Curry later claimed FlixBus even blocked her on social media.</p> <p>“We just want some information and some help,” she explained, complaining that she was still waiting on her luggage to be returned.</p> <p>FlixBus issued a statement claiming “a support line and email” was provided to all passengers and their families following the incident.</p> <p>"Outbound calls were made to passengers who had registered their mobile numbers, and emails were sent to passengers with instructions,” the bus company said.</p> <p>“At all times, the safety of its passengers and drivers is of highest priority to FlixBus.”</p> <p>Two days following the incident Curry received her luggage and was in Rome after an emergency shuttle had been deployed for stranded passengers.</p> <p>However, she said that as they arrived in Rome, passengers were finding “shrapnel” from the crash in their bodies and she had gotten a piece out of herself.</p> <p>On June 5 Curry took to TikTok again, saying she and her partner were grateful to be “safe and in Rome”.</p> <p>Although safe, she did note that they were heading to the hospital to get checked again as she was suffering from “very severe headaches” and had intense pain in her jaw.</p> <p>Curry then thanked the “heroes” in Italian fire and rescue, who she said took her and her partner in and gave them pasta, crackers, water and a change of clothes.</p> <p>She said FlixBus had rung her twice at a later date to tell the couple to keep receipts for a full refund.</p> <p>Curry jetted to Europe for her dream holiday but given the incident, she and her partner are dumping their Italian plans to recuperate in Rome.</p> <p>“We are so grateful to be alive please hold your loved ones close,” she said.</p> <p><em>Image credit: TikTok</em></p>

”Life begins again”: Neighbours actress shares incredible news

<p>Former Neighbours actress Katie Keltie, who played Michelle Scully on the beloved soap has announced she is now “cancer free”, just months after it was revealed she had stage four breast cancer.</p> <p>The star’s diagnosis was <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/health/caring/fight-of-her-life-neighbours-star-s-devastating-diagnosis" target="_blank" rel="noopener">shared in November 2022 </a>when her friend Ebonie Gilbert created a GoFundMe page to help raise $25,000 to cover medical costs for the actress' “extremely aggressive” cancer.</p> <p>The page raised more than $37,000 for Keltie and has since been taken down.</p> <p>The last post on the fundraiser was an update posted by the actress, claiming she was “cancer free”.</p> <p>“I recently received results of my latest scan and was told that there had been a complete metabolic response to diseased areas,” she told the <em>Daily Mail</em>.</p> <p>“In other words, it seems I am cancer free.</p> <p>“The last six months have been the most challenging time I have ever experienced to say the least.</p> <p>“The diagnosis completely turned my world upside down and it’s something I hope to never go through again.</p> <p>“I couldn’t have done it without each and every one of you.</p> <p>“Your support played a huge part in my navigating this horrible time.</p> <p>“It will forever be something I remember and am truly grateful for.”</p> <p>In her message, the actress thanked the “amazing team” at the Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre in Melbourne as well as her “beautiful family and friends”.</p> <p>“The nature of my cancer, having travelled through the blood stream, means that I will receive monthly infusions indefinitely, with no side effects,” she said.</p> <p>“Surgery is also off the table at this point.</p> <p>“Life begins again.”</p> <p>Speaking to the <em>Daily Mail</em>, the actress’ uncle Michael Keltie said, “When she went back with her mother and father, the doctor said, ‘It’s gone – it’s completely gone’.”</p> <p>“They didn’t know what they were hearing when they were told.</p> <p>“They said, ‘What do you mean, it’s gone?’ He said, ‘It’s completely gone’.</p> <p>“So that is a really positive story what happened with Kate.”</p> <p><em>Image credits: Getty/GoFundMe</em></p>

“Why our union abandons us”: Actress Shannen Doherty publicly shames actor’s union

<p>Actress Shannen Doherty has put all cards on the table during her battle with breast cancer.</p> <p>The Beverly Hills 90210 star, 51, is undergoing treatment for stage IV breast cancer and took to Instagram to reveal she is struggling to source health insurance coverage as she’s unable to work.</p> <p>Doherty publicly shaded the actor’s union SAG-AFTRA and its president, The Nanny alum Fran Drescher, saying she has been “abandoned”. </p> <p>"<a href="https://www.instagram.com/officialfrandrescher/?hl=en">@officialfrandrescher</a> I'm curious for people like me who have worked since they were 10 and paid dues to <a href="https://www.instagram.com/sagaftra/?hl=en">@sagaftra</a> how when we aren't able to work for health reasons why our union abandons us," she captioned her post.</p> <p>"I think we can do better for all our members and I think you're the person to do it. Health insurance shouldn't be based on annual income. It's a lifetime contribution.”</p> <p>"And for me and many others, we have paid a lifetime of dues to only be cancelled because we don't meet your current criteria. Not ok:, she added.</p> <p>The actress who was first diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015, posted a selfie from hospital while she received IV treatment.”</p> <p>Drescher was elected president of SAG-AFTRA in 2021 and gave an inspired speech about the union during the 2023 Screen Actors Guild awards. </p> <p>The union stands for the Screen Actors Guild - American Federation of Television and Radio Artists. It represents all media performers, including actors, singers, models and journalist, and provides support such as health and pension benefits.</p> <p>Drescher nor SAG-AFTRA have publicly addressed Doherty’s claims on her Instagram post but several of her Hollywood friends showed their support in the comments. </p> <p>"Too many of my friends have gone through this – it makes no sense. <a href="https://www.instagram.com/sagaftra/?hl=en">@sagaftra</a> must do better!!" actress Busy Philipps commented.</p> <p>"The union is so tough on actors even considering working outside of it, but then completely abandons people when they need the union the most," actor Brian Austin Green wrote. </p> <p>"This isn't about bad mouthing for me. It's about raising awareness, helping create a conversation and hopefully reaching an end goal of change.”</p> <p>In 2015, Doherty was diagnosed with breast cancer. Her cancer then returned as Stage IV in 2020, three years after going into remission. </p> <p>"It's going to come out in a matter of days or a week that — I'm stage IV. So, my cancer came back. And that's why I'm here,” she told Good Morning America. "I don't think I've processed it. “Forever young”: Shock death of Aussie actress

General Hospital star dies aged 55

<p>Sonya Eddy, best known for her role on <em>General Hospital</em>, has passed away at age 55. </p> <p>The actress, who scored many fans after playing beloved, no-nonsense nurse Epiphany Johnson in the popular US soap, died on Tuesday night, her good friend and actress Octavia Spencer announced on Instagram.</p> <p>"My friend @sonyaeddy passed away last night. The world lost another creative angel. <p dir="ltr">Australian actress Elizabeth Debicki has been spotted filming scenes in the lead up to Princess Diana’s fateful moment for <em>The Crown</em>.</p> <p dir="ltr">The 32-year-old was wearing a grey suit and black top - the same outfit worn by the Princess just hours before she was killed in a car crash in a tunnel in Paris back in 1997 at the age of 36.</p> <p dir="ltr">Nearby was fellow actor Khalid Abdalla, 40, who plays Egyptian film producer and Diana’s partner, Dodi Al-Fayed, who was killed in the same crash. </p> <p dir="ltr">Netflix has however confirmed that the car crash scene won’t be included in the show and will instead have the events leading up to Diana’s death. </p> <p dir="ltr">Filming for the scenes are being done in Barcelona, with parts of the city given a makeover to look like Paris. </p> <p dir="ltr">It comes as Dame Judi Dench came out swinging in defence of the royal family calling out the latest season of <em>The Crown</em> for blurring “the lines between historical accuracy and crude sensationalism”.</p> <p dir="ltr">She called on Netflix to issue a disclaimer at the beginning of each episode reminding audiences that <em>The Crown</em> is a fictionalised drama. </p> <p dir="ltr">Dench, who was made a dame by the late Queen Elizabeth II in 1988, said she was concerned that viewers would take <em>The Crown</em>’s account as historically accurate.</p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Images: Getty</em></p>

Oscar-winning actress dead at 88

<p dir="ltr">Oscar-winning actress Louise Fletcher has died from natural causes at the age of 88. </p> <p dir="ltr">The star’s representative confirmed that she died at her home in France, after surviving two bouts of breast cancer.</p> <p dir="ltr">Best known for her role as Nurse Ratched in the film <em>One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest</em>, Louise rose to fame thanks to her incredible performance.</p> <p dir="ltr">The film was the second in Oscar award winning history to have won all five major academy awards.  </p> <p dir="ltr">“Well, it looks like you all hated me so much that you’ve given me this award for it, and I’m loving every minute of it,” Louise said when she accepted the Oscar awards. </p> <p dir="ltr">“And all I can say is, I’ve loved being hated by you.”</p> <p dir="ltr">Louise also appeared in <em>Exorcist II: The Heretic</em> and <em>The Cheap Detective</em>.</p> <p dir="ltr">She was encouraged to act by her Aunty and undertook acting classes at night. </p> <p dir="ltr">However, Louise was deemed too tall to act across from Hollywood’s leading men actors. </p> <p dir="ltr">This however did not stop her from landing TV roles before she eventually met her husband and started a family in 1961. </p> <p dir="ltr">From 1973, she returned to the industry before accepting the role as Nurse Ratchet.  </p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Image: Getty </em></p>

Actress fighting for her life after horror car crash

<p>US actress Anne Heche is fighting for her life following a <a href="https://www.oversixty.com.au/news/news/new-details-of-actor-anne-heche-s-fiery-crash" target="_blank" rel="noopener">fiery car crash</a> in Los Angeles.</p> <p>The 53-year-old crashed her Mini Cooper into a house at a great speed, and was subsequently hospitalised with severe burns. </p> <p>According to the New York Post, the star is reportedly in a "critical condition".</p> <p>A spokesperson for Heche told the Post, "Shortly after the accident, Anne Heche became unconscious, slipping into a coma."</p> <p>They explained that Heche, who also crashed into an apartment garage earlier in the day, suffered "significant pulmonary injury requiring mechanical ventilation and burns that require surgical intervention".</p> <p>The Post also reported that the Los Angeles Police Department received a warrant to test the actress' blood, as they worked to determine if the crash was a result of drugs and alcohol.</p> <p>According to the Post, a representative for the LAPD confirmed the warrant was "obtained the same day as the traffic collision, which was August 5. The warrant was to draw blood, and an investigation is ongoing pending the blood test results."</p> <p>"If found intoxicated, [Heche] could be charged with misdemeanour DUI hit and run. Beloved Star Trek actress passes away

<p dir="ltr">Nichelle Nichols, the iconic actress who portrayed communications officer Lieutenant Uhura on Star Trek, sadly passed away on Saturday the July 30 at the age of 89.</p> <p dir="ltr">Her role as Uhura earned her a lifelong position of honour within the series’ intense fanbase, as well as countless accolades for breaking stereotypes that had limited black women to acting roles as servants.</p> <p dir="ltr">In fact, during the final seasons, Nichols was a part of history when Uhura and Captain Kirk kissed on screen. It was the first interracial kiss on an American TV network, making it a monumental landmark moment.</p> <p dir="ltr">Uhura, whose name comes from a Swahili word meaning "freedom", was a capable officer, often proving she could take on any role and succeed. She was one of the first African American women to be featured in a non-menial role on television.</p> <p dir="ltr">Nichols not only played Lt. Uhura on the original series, but also voiced her on Star Trek: The Animated Series and played Uhura in the first six Star Trek films. Uhura was promoted to lieutenant commander in Star Trek: The Motion Picture and to full commander in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan.</p> <p dir="ltr">Nichols considered leaving Star Trek after season one to pursue a career on Broadway, but Martin Luther King Jr., who was a fan of the series, understood the importance of her character in paving the way for other African Americans on television, and personally convinced her to remain on the show.</p> <p dir="ltr">NASA later employed Nichols in an effort to encourage women and African Americans to become astronauts. NASA Astronaut Group 8, selected in 1978, included the first women and ethnic minorities to be recruited, including three who were Black. Elvis actress found dead at just 44

<p dir="ltr"><em>Elvis</em> actress Shonka Dukureh has died at the age of 44.  </p> <p dir="ltr">The shining star who made her debut in the Baz Luhrmann biopic was found by one of her children in her Nashville apartment.</p> <p dir="ltr">Neighbours called 911 about 9.30am on July 21 and she was pronounced dead at the scene.</p> <p dir="ltr">Police don’t suspect any foul play and are waiting on the autopsy to understand the cause of death. </p> <p dir="ltr">Dukureh played Big Mama Thornton, a blues singer, in the new <em>Elvis</em> film. </p> <p dir="ltr">When she got the role, she took it seriously explaining Big Mama Thornton was someone she could relate to. </p> <p dir="ltr">"[Big Mama Thornton] was really raw with what she did and very honest and truthful and [made] music as she felt it. And I could totally relate to that," she told The Tennessean.</p> <p dir="ltr">"I was very aware and wanting to really be intentional about making sure I was paying respect, respecting her, respecting her legacy, respecting her spirit, respecting everything about what she brought to music and understanding that I'm able to do it because she's done it and laid that foundation."</p> <p dir="ltr">Dukureh, a self-taught vocalist, also sang alongside Doja Cat as Big Mama Thornton in the single <em>Vegas</em> from the <em>Elvis</em> soundtrack.</p> <p dir="ltr">“I know that she was a self-taught singer, like myself,” Dukureh said of Big Mama Thornton. </p> <p dir="ltr">“I never took a formal class, just like her. She taught herself how to sing, she taught herself how to play the drums, harmonica, and she said things like, ‘I don’t know how to read music, but I know how to sing and I know what good music sounds like.’ And I can relate to all of it.”</p> <p dir="ltr">Dukureh was also planning on releasing her first studio album The Lady Sings the Blues. </p> <p dir="ltr">“The project is a tribute to the blues music genre in celebration of those fierce unsung pioneering artists and musicians who paved the way for the rock’n roll music revolution,” she wrote on her <a href="https://sacredsoulmusic.com/home#about-shonka" target="_blank" rel="noopener">website</a>. </p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Images: Instagram</em></p>

Netflix actress' sudden death at 36

<p dir="ltr">Actress Busisiwe Lurayi, the star of Netflix’s comedy series <em>How to Ruin Christmas</em>, has passed away aged 36.</p> <p dir="ltr">Lurayi, a prolific stage and screen actress known as Busi, died at her South African home over the weekend.</p> <p dir="ltr">Her sudden death was confirmed in a statement shared on the official Instagram account of her Johannesburg-based talent agency, Eye Media Arts.</p> <p dir="ltr">“We are deeply saddened to notify you of the passing of our beloved Busisiwe Lurayi," the statement read.</p> <p dir="ltr">"Busisiwe passed away suddenly and was pronounced dead at her residence on Sunday [July 10, 2022] by medical personnel.”</p> <blockquote class="instagram-media" style="background: #FFF; <p dir="ltr"><em>a</em> actress Mary Mara has died aged 61 after reportedly drowning.</p> <p dir="ltr">The US actress had gone for a swim at the St. Lawrence River in the town of Cape Vincent in New York on Sunday morning when she drowned. </p> <p dir="ltr">State police received a call about 8.10am following reports of a drowning and found the body. </p> <p dir="ltr">Initial investigations suggest there was no foul play with Mara’s death with the body being taken for an autopsy. </p> <p dir="ltr">Mara’s manager Craig Dorfman confirmed the tragic death in a statement. </p> <p dir="ltr">“Mary was one of the finest actresses I ever met,” he wrote. </p> <p dir="ltr">“I still remember seeing her onstage in 1992 in ‘Mad Forest’ off Broadway. </p> <p dir="ltr">“She was electric, funny and a true individual. Everyone loved her. She will be missed.”</p> <p dir="ltr">Mara had many popular roles in shows such as <em>ER, NYPD Blue, Law &amp; Order, Shameless</em> and <em>Break Even</em> and much more. </p> <p dir="ltr">According to IMDb, Mara appeared in a whopping 20 movies and 40 television shows.</p> <p dir="ltr">Mara leaves behind her stepdaughter Katie Mersola, sisters Martha Mara and Susan Dailey, brother-in-law Scott Dailey and nephew Christopher Dailey.</p> <p dir="ltr"><em>Images: Getty</em></p>

And that was a really good way to get to know each other,” she told People.</p> <p dir="ltr">“It was a bit old-school in that sense — very romantic.”</p> <p dir="ltr">“I think going through the process of finding more self-worth, I think that what you want in a partner is elevated and so it’s great to have someone who feels like an equal partner and be in a healthy relationship.</p> <p dir="ltr">“There were times — I’m not saying with all my exes, they’re great — but there were some times that I was probably putting up with that I shouldn’t have. Marvel actress and husband sentenced to 8 and 14 years jail

<p dir="ltr"><em><strong>Content warning: This article includes descriptions of child sexual abuse.</strong></em></p> <p dir="ltr">Actress Zara Phythian, who appeared in Marvel’s 2016 film <em>Doctor Strange</em>, has received an eight-year prison sentence for child sexual abuse offences.</p> <p dir="ltr">The 38-year-old was <a href="https://oversixty.com.au/finance/legal/doctor-strange-star-and-husband-found-guilty-of-child-sex-abuse" target="_blank" rel="noopener">found guilty</a> by a jury last week of historical sexual abuse of a girl, aged between 13 and 15, and sentenced in the UK on Monday.</p> <p dir="ltr">Her 59-year-old husband, Victor Marke, was also found guilty of jointly abusing the same girl, as well as indecently assaulting a second, and sentenced to 14 years in prison.</p> <p dir="ltr">Both Phythian and Marke will be on the sex offender’s register for life and will be referred to the disclosure and barring service to prevent them from working with children ever again.</p> <p dir="ltr">Judge Mark Watson, who presided over the proceedings and handed down the sentences, said he believed Marke and Phythian’s abuse of the victim was pre-planned.</p> <p dir="ltr">“I regard you as the driving force behind the abuse,” Judge Watson told Marke.</p> <p dir="ltr">“Most people have held, and continue to hold you in high esteem. That’s due to the positive impact of your work [as martial arts instructors].</p> <p dir="ltr">“Whilst that may help in mitigation, that is also why you were able to groom and corrupt the victims in this case and why you got away abusing them for so long.”</p> <p dir="ltr">Marke reportedly cried during the sentencing and paced the court in a tracksuit, while Phythian reportedly smiled and waved to someone in the public gallery, though her face was said to be pale and tear-streaked, per <em><a href="https://www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/breaking-doctor-strange-actress-zara-26975792" target="_blank" rel="noopener">The Mirror</a></em>.</p> <p dir="ltr">Judge Watson also said Phythian’s “deviance” was influenced by the hold Marke had on her from an early age - with the couple marrying when she was in her 20s after Marke had been her martial arts instructor from when she was a young teen.</p> <p dir="ltr">During the trial, the couple denied the accusations they were jointly convicted of, and the survivor, who they abused before Phythian found acting fame, gave testimony from behind a curtain in the witness stand.</p> <p dir="ltr">She said what happened to her, which the couple repeatedly told her not to tell anyone about, was her “deepest, darkest secret”.</p> <p dir="ltr">“I think they saw a vulnerability in me and preyed on that,” she said in a police interview.</p> <p dir="ltr">The second survivor of Marke’s assaults, said that he touched her leg after she accidentally touched his leg, before kissing her on the lips and neck and causing her feelings of confusion, according to her police interview.</p> <p dir="ltr">At other times, Marke also kissed her, before having sex with her when she was 16.</p> <p dir="ltr">Though the age of consent in the UK is 16, under section 15.3 of the <a href="https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/2000/44/notes" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Sexual Offences (Amendment) Act 2000</a> a person over the age of 18 who is in a “position of trust” to someone under 18 - such as being a martial arts instructor - would be committing an offence by having sex with them.</p> <p dir="ltr">Prior to sentencing, prosecutor Ahmed Hossain QC read out victim statements, where the survivor abused by Phythian and Marke said they “corrupted my development” and “robbed me of my innocence”.</p> <p dir="ltr">“You showed you liked a very advanced naughty side that satisfied your urges,” she said in the statement via Hossain.</p> <p dir="ltr">She also spoke of feeling intimidated and scared by the couple and stated that she didn’t want to keep being “[their] puppet”.</p> <p dir="ltr">“I have become an adult now. All the pain, anger and disgust and shame I felt is now on you.
