“Is this real?!”: Melbourne waitress receives eyewatering tip

A young waitress in Melbourne was brought to tears after a customer left an incredibly generous tip.

The customer was fixing up the bill after his meal when he punched in an extra $10,000 into the EFTPOS machine at the Italian Restaurant Gilson in Melbourne’s South Yarra.

The waitress and student, Lauren, told 7NEWS she couldn’t believe her eyes.

“I made them say the number out loud, because I thought, what if I have just gotten too excited and I’ve stupidly read an extra zero, or something like that.”

“I keep going over it again and again in my head. The actual experience of it happening, second by second, was surreal and amazing.” She added.

Lauren wasn’t certain if she was even allowed to accept such a large sum.

Tips that the workers receive are typically shared between the staff, but the generous diner insisted that $7,000 go directly to Lauren and the $3,000 be distributed among the remaining staff.

According to 7NEWS, the tipper is a young, self-made cryptocurrency businessman who owns more than $120 million of property in Toorak.

“I am just extremely grateful, to know that they thought that much of my service is amazing,” Lauren said.

A fellow Gilson waitress, Charlotte Crow, told 7NEWS, “She came up to me crying, she was like ‘is this real? Was it a mistake, what do I do?’”

While Crow teased that she should have paid more attention to Lauren’s table, she said Lauren “is a really hard worker,” adding, “she deserves it.”

Other colleagues agreed, suggesting Lauren use the money to go on a well-earned vacation.

“I’m going to be honest, I’ve never been overseas, so the first thing that everyone was saying to me was to go on a holiday,” Lauren said.

“That money is just going to help, a lot.”

Waitress SACKED after receiving $6000 tip

Man takes back tip from rude waitress

One man's dining experience has ended in an altercation, with a waitress not providing good customer service as promised.

Taking to Reddit, an anonymous man wrote about his experience of dining at a local Chinese restaurant with a friend.

He explained that while the food was "great", he and his friend had "almost no interactions" with wait staff during the evening due to coronavirus precautions.

"The bill came out to be just about $30, and I tipped just a little above 15 per cent, giving $5," he said.

The waitress took the bill from the table, but she returned just before the man and his friend left to question their tip.

"She returned with the $5 bill we left to cover the tip and in a passive-aggressive tone [said] 'Was something wrong with the food? Where's the rest of the tip?'" he said.

He says the interaction left him feeling "shocked and confused".

"I recall it being the very first time I was confronted for not tipping enough, as my usual 15 per cent tip suffices in past restaurant experiences," he explained.

He decided to take back the $5 tip without speaking to the waitress, and walked out of the restaurant with his friend, even though she attempted to call them out as they did.

"In the moment, we both agreed that it was an insane thing for the waitress to do, acting as if we didn't tip at all," he said.

"The waitress that had confronted us had been someone we had close to almost no contact with the entire time, as she had only been to our table once to give our food."

He asked other Redditors to share what they would have done in the situation.

"Ignore her request to tip more and leave the $5 bill as it was, or give a larger tip as she asked just to get the situation over with?" he asked.

Commenters widely sided with the man.

"Fifteen per cent is enough and you gave more. Taking the tip away from an entitled waitress is totally justified," one wrote.

Another said they were "glad" he took the $5 note back, adding, "She's lucky you didn't get her fired, which she deserved."

Waitress drags huge goanna from Aussie restaurant

When a huge goanna made a surprise appearance at a winery restaurant in Australia, a French waitress quickly took control of the situation.

On Sunday, Samia Lila was serving at the packed restaurant in southern New South Wales when a customer grabbed her hand and pointed at the unwelcome scaly visitor crawling across the floor.

"I looked at it and thought it was a dog at first," Lila said. "But then I realised it was a goanna."

About 180cm long, it went under one of the tables and the customers sitting there started to scream.

"Everyone was screaming, so I started screaming too," Lila said.

The 25-year-old put a chair in its path to try and buy time to think of what to do while stopping it from reaching customers.

Running out of options, the best she could think of was grabbing it by its tail and dragging it outside across the veranda and away from everyone – including past a woman who had by then jumped on her chair.

"I was just like a kid; I thought 'I want to do it, I want to do it, I know it's bad, but it was getting close to customers,’" Ms Lila said. "I wasn't scared, I like reptiles so was a bit excited."

She has been in Australia since November and it was only the second time she had seen a goanna, after scaring one away from the winery's vines last week.

A video of Lila's brave actions was posted on the Mimosa Wines Facebook page and was viewed nearly 200,000 times in two days.

The Normandy resident said she did not expect the video to go viral at all. Due to her actions, she has now been labelled the "Goanna Girl".

She will be working at Mimosa Winery – and protecting it from goannas – under her Working Holiday Visa until June or July before she continues her travels.

Written by Albert McKnight.
