Horrifying moment plane crashes in gender reveal stunt

A gender reveal party in Mexico has ended in tragedy after the stunt plane crashed killing the pilot.

The video, filmed by a party guest, showed an expecting couple smiling as they waited for the plane to ascend and perform the reveal.

The pair stood in front of a sign that read: "Oh baby!" as the small plane approached them releasing pink smoke, signalling to the couple that they are having a girl.

Tragedy struck when the pilot pulled the Piper PA-25-235 Pawnee aircraft upwards and the left wing suddenly gave way, sending aircraft into a tailspin, ultimately leading to the fatal crash.

The Sun reported that the attendees seemed oblivious to the crash as they continued to celebrate the gender reveal.

Pilot killed after his Piper PA-25 left wing failed at a gender reveal party in the town of San Pedro, Mexico. pic.twitter.com/6JILK7fsGm

— Breaking Aviation News & Videos (@aviationbrk) September 3, 2023

Later on, graphic photos of the horrendous aftermath emerged showing the 32-year-old pilot, Luis Angel N., lying in the wreckage of the plane before he was rushed to hospital where he unfortunately passed away, according to local media reports.

A few other photos of the wreckage has also been posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, with a few people rushing to get the pilot out.

Footage of the gender reveal party has since gone viral, with viewers sharing their condolences to the pilot, while others slammed the "extreme gender reveals".

"The way the camera panned back to the couple with not the slightest care in the world for the pilot is sad," one commented.

“Why do they have to do such extreme gender reveals lately? Why can’t they just settle for something simple?” added another.

“It looks like he over stressed the aircraft. I wonder if he was above safe manoeuvring speed? I hate to see it," wrote a third.

A fourth person commented: “Whats the point of this at the first place? I see so many accidents and incidents doing gender reveals.”

Images: Twitter

Tourist jailed over nude stunt at Bali temple

A German tourist could face time in jail after stripping naked and crashing a sacred dance performance at a temple in Bali.

The backpacker, identified by police as 28-year-old Darja Tuschinski, casually strolled up to the stage with no clothes on while the dancers remained professional and calm.

In the now-viral clip filmed earlier this week, the backpacker was filmed climbing the stairs and attempting to open a door into the temple, as a local man attempted to stop her.

After barging the door open, she was then filmed then walking down and kneeling in front of the stage, where she appeared to pray in front of horrified onlookers.

“The female foreigner went naked on the stage of Saraswati Ubud Temple owned by Tjokorda Ngurah Suyadnya AKA Cok Wah,” Bali Police spokesman Stefanus Satake Bayu Setianto told local media outlet Coconuts Bali.

The bizarre stunt sparked backlash online, with one local writing, “Why weren’t you immediately given clothes and secured first? There was someone who was performing the Balinese dance … We don’t need crazy caucasians, do we?”

Another wrote, “Sad to see the behaviour of this one person.”

A third pointed out the cultural clash, writing, “Caucasians who go to Asia usually feel the most spiritual freedom (and) enlightenment … But (their) life and mindset are not in accordance with traditional Asian spiritual and spiritual values, especially in Bali.”

Local council chief Wayan Widana told another local media outlet, Radar Bali, that Tuschinski was known to suffer mental health issues and had been “brought to the Bangli Mental Institution.”

In recent months, Indonesian officials have expressed their frustrations with unruly tourists.

Ravindra Singh Shekhawat, who is the general manager for Bali operations at Melbourne-based tour company Intrepid Travel, told news.com.au earlier this year, “Recently there has been an increase in tourists not following the local laws and respecting local culture and traditions, including instances of tourists getting into heated arguments with local police for not wearing helmets or breaking traffic laws.”

Britain’s Got Talent burned by 334 complaints after "insensitive" stunt

Warning: This article contains content that some readers may find disturbing.

Britain’s Got Talent is in hot water with its 16th season after the second episode drew in a staggering 334 complaints - a total of 400 across both episodes, Ofcom reported.

The stunt that caused the ire, dubbed “insensitive” and “unacceptable” by the public, saw a professional stuntman named Thomas Vu cover himself in a fire-retardant gel, before he was set alight and left to solve a Rubik’s Cube.

In the wake of the stunt, hosts Ant and Dec were quick to issue a warning to viewers, telling them “do not try this at home, ever.”

And when the clip was uploaded to the official BGT Twitter account, the text ‘do not try this at home’ is splashed across the video.

However, distressed viewers still took to the comments section to share their distaste, with one writing that it was “absolutely ridiculous and irresponsible [and] should never have been allowed to be televised especially on a family programme!!”

Stuntman Thomas Vu solved the Rubik's cube in the most UNEXPECTED way: https://t.co/nSEWOokCSb

Do not try this at home!#BGT pic.twitter.com/awPLBTmaEf

— BGT (@BGT) April 20, 2023

“BGT totally ill-considered showing a guy setting himself on fire whilst solving a Rubik’s Cube,” tweeted another. “No thought to the fact that impressionable children watch the show.”

“Don’t get me wrong,” one began, “people do crazy stuff and it’s their choice and that’s fine by me but maybe that last act should have been well after the 9pm watershed?? Not sure that kind of playing with fire thing is suitable for young kids who probably stay up to watch BGT.”

“Like what has BGT come to when we set people on fire for entertainment,” someone else said on the matter.

And as yet another user put it, “sorry but showing a man setting himself on fire on a ‘family’ show is not acceptable. Even with the mention ‘do not try this at home’.”

Concern for children continued from there, with one tweeting “The Rubik’s Cube fire stunt on BGT was totally inappropriate. Did you not think about burn victims and how seeing this would affect them?”

Meanwhile, others simply found the stunt to be insensitive, with one even referencing the 1965 Bradford City disaster when they wrote “I just find this insensitive to anyone that has been through any trauma caused by fire.”

Criticism for the episode was so intense, coupled with the volume of complaints flowing in, that the show was forced to issue a statement, telling viewers “Britain’s Got Talent showcases a mix of variety acts to engage audiences.

“In this case, it was made very clear on screen that this act should not be tried at home and the programme was subject to strict compliance rules."

Images: Britain’s Got Talent / ITV

5 unbelievable movie stunts that were real

The rise of CGI in films has made audiences suspicious whenever there is a perfectly executed stunt. However, these films actually pulled of these unbelievable stunts in real-life.

1. Live and Let Die (1973)

In Live and Let Die, Roger Moore as James Bond, finds himself stranded on an island surrounded by crocodiles. Bond then uses the crocodiles as a bridge, jumping to safety on the other side of the reptiles. This stunt was executed by using the owner of the crocodile farm where they were shooting, Ross Kananga. To prevent the reptiles from swimming around, Kananga tied their feet to concrete blocks. He then attempted to cross the reptile bridge five separate times, and a few of the attempts led to near-death experiences. In one attempt, Kananga slipped midway and was stuck on the back of a croc and then another time, a croc got a hold of his shoe and he was in a tug-of-war battle to keep his foot. On the sixth try, he nailed the stunt.

2. Terminator 2: Judgement Day (1991)

Near the end of the film, T-1000 shapeshifts into a helicopter and flies beneath an overpass. Director James Cameron wanted this stunt to be real but he had to make sure there was enough space for the helicopter to fit under the overpass. After wheeling it under the overpass, he found he had five feet of space above him and four on each side. The scene was so risky that the camera crew refused to film it so Cameron shot it himself. The risky stunt was successfully pulled off.

3. Speed (1994)

This move features a scene where the bus has to clear a huge gap in a freeway. Sandra Bullock’s character, Annie Porter, successfully clears the gap and the bus lands safely on the other side. The filmmakers digitally removed the missing bit of concrete in the road but, the director actually got the bus to fly in the air. A stunt driver sped along a LA freeway and went up a constructed ramp. The jump made the driver go up in the air and land 0.49 seconds later. The landing ruined the bus but the driver survived due to a special harness that was designed by the stunt director.

4. Mission: Impossible II (2000)

Tom Cruise is known for being a daredevil and performing his own stunts. In Mission: Impossible II, the actor’s character gets into a fight with a villain on a beach. The guy gets a knife and tries to stab Cruise in the eye, and during filming, a real knife was used. To make sure he wouldn’t lose his sight, there was a steel cable that was attached to the weapon and Cruise positioned himself so it would stop a quarter of an inch away from his eye.

5. The Bourne Ultimatum (2007)

In the third movie of the Bourne series, Matt Damon is chasing an assassin and has to leap across an alleyway and crash through the window to get him. To film the scene, director Paul Greengrass got a stuntman to leap from one building to another, smashing into a false window. In order to get the perfect shot, another stunt guy was attached to a wire rig and was given a handheld camera to follow the body double. The director said that they had to film the scene a couple of times to get the perfect shot and in one attempt, the cameraman’s harness got stuck and ruined the shot.

Images: Getty

Protest is dangerous, but feminists have a long history of using humour, pranks and stunts to promote their message

Protest was dangerous in feminism’s formative years.

The suffragettes in the United Kingdom initially began by trying to persuade and educate to win women the right to vote.

When that didn’t work they became frustrated – and, by 1903, radical.

By the 1910s, they adopted militant tactics, with women on hunger strikes being force-fed in prison.

It climaxed in 1913 when Emily Wilding Davidson, holding the suffragette flag, stepped in front of the horse of King George V at the Epsom Derby.

Her funeral, reportedly watched by 50,000 people, gave a global profile to the women’s right-to-vote campaign.

But while protest was very dangerous for first-wave feminists, subsequent Western activists often adopted pranks.

There is an adage that feminists and women aren’t funny. However, the history of activism reveals humour as a successful strategy for change.

Here are four great contemporary feminist pranks that demonstrate the power of humour for advocacy.

1. A chain reaction

On March 31 1965, feminist activists Rosalie Bogner and Merle Thornton walked into Brisbane’s Regatta hotel, chaining themselves to the foot rail of the front bar.

They were protesting the exclusion of women from Queensland public bars.

The police were called, smashed the padlock, and told them to leave. They refused.

After some bemused and sympathetic men gave them glasses of beer, the officer gave up, telling the women to have “a good time” and “don’t drink too much”.

They inspired women nationally to do the same. Laws had changed across Australia by the early 1970s.

According to historian Kay Saunders, it was the “beginning of second-wave feminism” in Australia.

2. Guerrilla Girls

In 1985, the New York activist group Guerrilla Girls began their quest to counter the art world’s sexism, racism and inequality. They used gorilla masks to remain anonymous and emphasise that the message was paramount, not the activist.

Guerrilla Girls famously erected posters and placed stickers protesting the lack of women in art galleries, asking “Do women have to be naked to get into the Met Museum?”

Humour and statistics enhanced awareness, got people involved, and illuminated issues such as how few women of colour have their work exhibited.

Since the Guerrilla Girls began four decades ago, their messages have continued to spread and hold institutions accountable. They have expanded their mission to important causes such as poverty and war, while continuing to change the art world’s attitudes and to merging art and politics.

But the gender imbalance in art galleries is still a global issue. This is currently being countered with initiatives such as the National Gallery of Australia’s Know My Name campaign and efforts to write women back into art history.

3. Switcheroo

In 1993 the Barbie Liberation Organization undertook a Christmas prank, swapping the voice boxes of 50 Barbie and G.I. Joe dolls.

G.I. Joe now said “I love to shop with you” or “Let’s plan our dream wedding”. Barbie hollered “Dead men tell no lies” or “Attack!”.

With an aim to teach children about stereotypes, the spectaclemade a huge media splash for the cause.

The tactic is known as “shop-dropping”. The activist bought, altered and then dropped the dolls back on the shelves.

The organisation arranged for children to comment to the media on gender stereotyping, and the press reported there were hundreds of dolls instead of just 50.

Although impact is hard to measure, the prank created unprecedented media attention leading to the visibility of the organisation’s issues based video. It questioned the status quo regarding what girls can do and should think, promoting social change in exposing how toys shape ideology.

It revealed the impact of gender stereotypes and their insidious sexism; the way war toys are role models; and the need for playthings to be more inclusive and diverse.

Mattel, the company that makes Barbie, did not react, but later released toys indicating it had received the message. These include the Inspiring Women series featuring the likes of Eleanor Roosevelt, Ella Fitzgerald and Jane Goodall.

4. Sausage fest!

At the 2016 Australian Film Institute’s premier event, the AACTA Awards, protesters from Women in Film and Television NSW blocked the red carpet dressed as sausages and chanting “end the sausage party”.

The event was livestreamed on Facebook after security gave them access, thinking they were part of the event.

The women were protesting for a quota system to improve the number of women working in the film and television industries.

They wanted to highlight a lack of feature film judging transparency, the low proportion of nominations for women, and how few films were directed and driven by female creatives.

Only 20% of Australian-funded feature films have a female director. AACTA does not fund films and it is therefore the broader industry that urgently needs to lift female participation.

Since the sausage prank, AACTA entry forms also ask about the diversity of the filmmakers, triggering producers to reflect on inclusion in their films.

AACTA has also changed its eligibility rules, engaging with Women in Film and Television to expand eligibility beyond just films that received a theatrical release.

This reduced barriers to entry; opportunities for women and diverse filmmakers are more frequently in independent or low-budget sectors, which don’t always attain release in commercial cinemas. This change in eligibility was reported as allowing greater inclusion and diversity.

Recognition across society has come from a long line of feminist pranksters. But slow progress means there is still a long way to go to achieve equality and equity.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

Samantha Armytage slams "infuriating" TV stunt

Samantha Armytage was left unimpressed on Tuesday morning when a Sunrise reporter's live cross from Brisbane was taken over by a group of "zombies" protesting climate change outside of Queensland parliament.

Queensland correspondent Bianca Stone was covering the climate change protest when zombies, who are part of the group Extinction Rebellion, began to interrupt her cross.

"Basically what these guys are trying to show is that they are the zombies of the future coming back to warn the politicians about the climate change crisis," Bianca told the unimpressed Sunrise team in Sydney.

"They say this will be a peaceful protest, except for this zombie that is knawing my arm right now," the reporter joked.

Natalie Barr asked Natalie if she wanted to interview a zombie while she was there, but the zombie didn't have many words.

"Can we not?" Sam said as the zombie began talking. "Can we not waste time with this?"

As Bianca finished her cross, Natalie said, "Thanks, we'll move on, shall we? That was so weird!"

"It’s so infuriating, they’re so annoying, I wish we wouldn’t give them airtime," Sam added as the group laughed at the very strange scenes they just witnessed.

Social media users were similarly unimpressed, with one user writing, "I have no idea how they think that the Government would take them seriously about climate change with this behaviour..."

"[Extinction Rebellion] isn’t doing themselves or the cause much good with stunts like this," another added.

"Don’t these goobers have a job to go to?" someone else questioned.

Peter Ford joked, "The joy of doing a live cross with over-excited talent!"

Some, however, thought it was great, with another adding, "Australia needs more of this. Our politicians are completely asleep at the wheel."

Court in the crossfire: Tennis legends reprimanded for protest stunt

Despite the Australian Open’s best wishes to handle the grand slam anniversary of Margaret Court with care, two tennis legends Martina Navratilova and John McEnroe had other plans for the day.

The pair unveiled a banner calling for the Margaret Court Arena to be renamed in Evonne Goolagong’s honour, which was a reference to the Aussie champion Indigenous player.

Margaret Court has been widely criticised for her opposition to same-sex marriage as well as her views on transgender people.

Therefore, Martina Navratilova and John McEnroe took matters into their own hands and paraded a banner painted in Aboriginal style, calling for the arena to be renamed.

Martina Navratilova and John McEnroe have been parading a banner asking for the Margaret Court Arena to be renamed.

Tennis Australia are not pleased 👀...

Full: https://t.co/qUJBFVZ57m#bbctennis #AusOpen pic.twitter.com/JpU4wi27Jw
— BBC Sport (@BBCSport) January 28, 2020

Navratilova told BBC Sport that she “wanted to push the conversation forward”.

"I thought we got it going a couple of years ago," she said.

"I thought Tennis Australia would do something - or the government of Victoria, as apparently they are the ones that make the decision - but nothing has happened. P-plater motorcyclist's stunt goes horribly wrong

Footage posted to the Dash Cam Owners Australia Facebook page has revealed the terrifying moment a P-plater motorcyclist’s stunt goes horribly wrong.

In this video, which was filmed on a quiet (thankfully) stretch of road in the suburb of Doonside in Sydney’s West, the motorcyclist in the right lane attempts a wheelie.

And that’s where it all starts to go wrong.

The moment he starts to go a little too quickly he loses control of the bike and it flips backward, sending the motorcyclists tumbling into the bitumen.

Somehow he manages to get to his feet, but it’s a warning to any motorists out there that you never know who you’re going to be sharing the road with.

What are your thoughts?

Aussie stunt rider surfs waves ON a motorbike

Australian motorbike stunt rider and daredevil, Robbie Maddison, has done the unbelievable: he surfed some waves on an actual motorbike, and survived.

In an incredible project that has been two years in the making, the 34-year-old rode his custom motorbike in huge surf off Teahupoo in Tahiti.

Maddison’s bike was modified with small skis on the front wheel and a propeller on the back.

“People said 'it's a pipe dream', 'it's never going to happen' and that's how a lot of people looked at this thing and that's the vibe I've got from a lot of people,” Maddison told Fairfax Media.

And despite a few failed starts, the Kiama man showed the world what he was made of.

"I don't think the photos or video show how physical it was," he told Surfer magazine. “You can't see that when the wave broke right behind me, I honestly thought that might be the end of my life.”

Related links:

You will love Diane Keaton and Morgan Freeman’s new movie 5 Flights Up

Sweden’s Princess Madeleine reveals pics of her gorgeous little ones

Sheriff catches too-cute baby owl on video
