The clever solution the Sydney Opera House is using to get rid of pesky seagulls

Restaurants and bars lining Sydney harbour at Circular Quay, including the outdoor Opera Bar at the Sydney Opera House, have been forced to take creative measures to handle the hoards of complaints from customers about seagulls stealing their food.

And they've successfully done this by hiring ‘Seagull Patrol’ dogs.

Roxy is just one of the multiple canines being used to patrol the popular foreshore strip for the last few weeks, and employees are saying the strategy has been working a treat to keep the birds away.

Opera Bar Venue Manager Steve Davis says the seagulls had become such an issue for businesses, that staff were trained on how to protect the food of customers.

“It was to the point that we have written it into our staff’s manual that they had to run to the site of a seagull attack to assist the guests,” he told Nine News.

The birds have proven to be stubborn, with the dogs being one of many methods used to try and stop them from bothering patrons.

“We tried sonic deterrents, we tried wire galoshes over the food, we tried a robotic hawk that didn’t work either, the seagulls seemed to like him more than be scared of him,” said the Opera House Visitor Experience Liaison Jade McKellar.

Jade said the dogs so far have been a massive success story.

Sick and tired of seagulls dive-bombing the dinner plates of tourists at waterfront restaurants near the Opera House, managers have brought in a team of crafty canines… @alicemonfries #9News pic.twitter.com/rf5NjlUYwn
— Nine News Sydney (@9NewsSyd) January 22, 2019

What do you think of Opera Bar's clever solution to keep seagulls at bay? Man fined $160 after dropping ice cream cone in seagull attack

A man holidaying on the South Devon Coast has been slapped with a $160 littering fine, after dropping an ice cream cone in the midst of a seagull attack.

Steven Higgins was enjoying a seaside stroll when he stopped for an ice cream cone.

After he purchased the cone, six seagulls caught the Yorkshire man unaware and launched themselves at him, causing him to drop the empty cone to the ground.

And to make matter worse, when the understandably shaky Higgins ditched the cone he was slapped with a huge £80 ($AU160) for littering!

Mr Higgins told the Plymouth Herald the bird attack was “completely unexpected”.

“The attack left me really shaken-up,” he said. “The gulls had taken my ice-cream but had left me with the cone. I was scared that they would come back again, I was scared for my own safety.Within seconds I was slapped with an £80 fine for littering.

“I was a tourist, I don’t live down there, I’m not aware of these things.

“If I had been aware I wouldn’t be walking around outside with an ice-cream. I was physically assaulted, and I dropped the cone because I was scared for my own safety if they came back.”

Mr Higgins reportedly wrote to the environmental and civil enforcement company that issued the fine, asking them to reconsider due to the circumstances.

It’s wrong to litter, but we think this has gone a little too far. What do you think about the man’s story? Do you think they were right to issue the fine?

Share your thoughts in the comments below.

Related links:

10 happiest countries in the world

10 river cruise ports you must experience

10 spectacular hikes to do around the world
