Princess Di's relative lays to rest longstanding burial myth

Princess Diana's relative has corrected a longstanding myth about where the late Princess of Wales is actually buried.

Countess Karen Spencer, who is married to Diana's brother Charles, responded to a fan on her Instagram account to address the claim.

Since Princess Diana's death in 1997, there have been many rumours about where she was actually laid to rest.

After a large funeral in Westminster Abbey, Diana's casket was returned to her family home for burial.

She was buried within a mausoleum on the Oval Lake, on an island in the middle of the Althorp estate, where she grew up.

Lady Diana spent her childhood and teenage years at Althorp House, a 90-room stately home located in Northamptonshire, prior to marrying the Prince of Wales in 1981.

There is no public access to the island where Diana is buried, with a seperate memorial laying elsewhere on the Althorp grounds for members of the public to pay their respects.

Since the Princess's death, she believe she is not buried at Althorp at all.

Instead, it's claimed the late Princess of Wales was laid to rest alongside her late father John, who died in 1992, in the Spencer family vault at St Mary's Church in Great Brington.

But the countess has now publicly denied such claims.

Sharing an innocent photo of the Oval Lake to Instagram, one person asked the countess about the rumour.

They said, "I saw online that she may have been buried in the family crypt with her father in a church which was used by the Spencer family".

Karen commented below, "The law in the UK is that she would have needed to be creamated [sic] in order to go in the crypt and that was not what she wanted, so that wasn't possible."

Another person added to the conversation, "Thank you for publicly addressing this longstanding myth. A statement from the family has been the missing piece in 26 years of speculation."

While another comment said, "Agreed this is the first public statement from the family. A bit bizarre it's in the Instagram comments section but at least it's now been addressed!"

Bindi Irwin's daughter Grace looks just like her famous Irwin relatives

A recent series of images of baby Grace Warrior shared by her adoring mother Bindi Irwin has set tongues wagging as to exactly who among her famous relatives she looks most like.

In particular, an image shared by grandma Terri of Bindi as a baby to mark her 24th birthday caused fans to instantly make the connection that baby Grace strongly resembles her famous Wildlife Warrior mum.

24 years ago our lives changed for the better. “History repeating itself”: Relatives of COVID-19 victims call out government

Relatives of aged care residents who died during Victoria’s second coronavirus outbreak are reliving their trauma as they watch “history repeat itself in the state’s latest outbreak.

Kathy Bourinaris’ 77-year-old mother, Fotini Atzarakis, died from COVID-19 in 2020 just two weeks after moving into St Basil’s Homes for the Aged, where the virus was spreading at the time.

“This shouldn’t be happening. I can’t believe they still haven’t got it right,” Kathy said on Monday night.

After the state’s snap lockdown on Friday, three staff members who worked at two nursing homes tested positive to the virus, along with a 99-year-old resident from Arcare Maidstone aged care who has since been transferred to hospital.

Genomic testing has found that one of the ‘mystery case’ aged care workers is linked to the hotel quarantine outbreak in South Australia and tested positive despite receiving her first dose of the vaccine.

One of the other workers had also worked at BlueCross Western Gardens in Sunshine, Victoria, and both facilities have since been locked down while all staff and residents are tested.

“I can’t believe what’s happening, it’s bringing me back to what happened last year,” Kathy said in a plea to the government to do more to stem the spread.

“It’s been over a year now and we’re back to where we started.

“What we went through last year as a family, you could not even imagine and I wish it upon absolutely nobody,” she said tearfully.

“It’s one thing to lose your loved one, but to lose my mum the way we did, I can’t explain, it was living hell.”

Evagelia Takis, a healthcare worker, is also struggling with the latest outbreak in her state following the passing of her elderly father at St Basil’s aged care facility last year.

“To be honest I feel bitter watching history repeating itself,” she said on Tuesday.

“This is not what we want to see and you’d think by now after a fourth lockdown and how many aged care residents passed away last year, we would have learnt and found out or found a better alternative to prevent this from happening again.”

Of particular concern was the revelation that aged care workers were working at multiple facilities, prompting the news to spread that the federal government had overturned a rule in November that prevented staff from working at multiple facilities to curb future outbreaks.

“Aged care residents need to be prevented from this situation because they’re the most vulnerable, we need to take care of our elderly residents and advocate for them,” Evagelia continued.

The Victorian government has since reinstated the single-site working rule.

Image: Getty Images

International drug ring: Schapelle Corby’s relative caught up in biggest ever drug bust

One of the people arrested in a $90 million drug bust is a relative of the convicted drug smuggler Schapelle Corby.

The Courier Mail reported Viliami Kisina - related to Corby through her half-brother - was one of six arrested on Monday during raids across south-east Queensland and northern New South Wales.

There is no suggestion that Corby had any involvement in the drug operation.

The raid uncovered a record-breaking 766 kilograms of MDMA powder which will prevent up to 12 million ecstasy tablets from getting into the hands of Australians all over the country.

While police are refusing to reveal where or when they seized the mass amount of illicit drugs, they have revealed the powder had the highest purity ever recorded in Queensland and have a potential street value of up to $90 million.

The drug bust is the largest of its kind in Queensland and the largest ever in Australia.

Two British men, aged 51 and 40, have been arrested in Queensland and are to be charged with drug possession and supply.

The supply uncovered represents approximately seven per cent of the 1.1 tonnes of ecstasy consumed annually in Australia.

Corby spent over nine years in Bali’s Kerobokan Prison after 4.2 kg of cannibas was found in her bag in 2004.

She was released in 2014.

Why you shouldn’t force children to hug or kiss relatives this Christmas

The Girl Scouts of America have released a reminder to parents in the lead up to Christmas not to force children to hug or kiss relatives this holiday season.

The organisation published a blog post this week arguing that forcing kids to hug relatives and family friends could muddy the waters when it comes to the notion of consent later in life.

“Have you ever insisted, ‘Uncle just got here—go give him a big hug!’ or ‘Auntie gave you that nice toy, go give her a kiss,’ when you were worried your child might not offer affection on her own? If yes, you might want to reconsider the urge to do that in the future,” the blog post reads.

The blog continues: “Think of it this way, telling your child that she owes someone a hug either just because she hasn’t seen this person in a while or because they gave her a gift can set the stage for her questioning whether she “owes” another person any type of physical affection when they’ve bought her dinner or done something else seemingly nice for her later in life.”

Of course, many children will want to hug and kiss their family members, but the organisation urges parents and guardians to read their children and if they’re reticent, not to force them.

The blog post adds: “Of course, this doesn’t give [children] license to be rude! There are many other ways to show appreciation, thankfulness, and love that don’t require physical contact.”

Report finds many Aussies seniors live in relative income poverty

A new report had found many older Australians are living their lives in a state of relative income poverty due to policies that discourage them from accessing equity stored in their family home.

The report, Unlocking Housing Wealth, released on Monday by the Institute of Actuaries of Australia, suggests that changes to the age pension test and a relief from stamp duty could potentially encourage seniors to unlock the $1 trillion of housing wealth owned by over 65s.

Relative income poverty is defined as having an income less than half the national median household income, with Australians over 65 suffering the second highest relative income poverty rate of the wealthy countries in the Organisation for Economic Co-Operation and Development. Only Korean retirees are worse off.

"In short, our retirees are asset rich but income poor," the Actuaries' report says. "Accessing part or all of their housing wealth will assist many individuals to meet their retirement needs."

Report author and partner at PWC, Catherine Nance, suggested to The Sydney Morning Herald that many seniors could boost their living standards if penalties applying to selling the family home were removed, "Tax policies for years have encouraged people to save via their home. That's great, but it's a highly illiquid form of savings and there are impediments to people using that asset better."

"We don't want to force people to move out of their homes or borrow against them. We're not trying to cure the budget deficit here. But we do want to help people to make better decisions that would improve their lives."

Related links:

Watch the last interview Jon English gave

Penguin swims 5,000 miles every year to reunite with 71-year-old man

85-year-old man finds lost wallet, 71 years later

Kids’ very honest perspective on relatives who have dementia

Children and grandchildren of people living with dementia have spoken out in this real, heartbreaking video to share their own experiences with the disease.

The video was shot as part of a classroom based dementia awareness program which will be aimed at children in year five and six in school.

UNSW research psychologist Dr. Jess Baker spoke of her hopes for the project’s intentions.

“I would love to think that we can get to a point where by the time every child leaves primary school they will know about dementia and understand that a person with dementia is still a person,” she said.

“That when a child’s loved one forgets who they are, the child will know ways to interact with them, know that it is no-one’s fault and that you don’t need a good memory to have a good time.

“Or if they see someone with dementia in their community that may be confused, they won’t fear that person, but embody values of respect and kindness. Rather than changing attitudes and behaviours, which is pretty hard to do, let’s create attitudes and behaviours.”

Related links:

Would you consider being screened for dementia over the phone?

8 ways to age-proof your brain

Why you NEED to keep your mind active
