Senior drivers in this state to receive free car rego

Keeping a car on the road is an expensive prospect, so senior motorists in one Australian state will welcome the news of a rego cashback offer that could see them saving up to $700 on their yearly registration costs. But as always, there’s a catch.

NSW Premier Gladys Berejiklian has announced that motorists in her state who spend more than $25 a week on Sydney toll roads over a year will be eligible for free vehicle registration, in a scheme that will cost the state $100 million.

The scheme with be available for privately registered cards, utes, four-wheel-drives and motorcycles from July 1 next year, and will be backdated to July 1 this year to allow motorists to claim free vehicle rego if they spend more than $25 a week.

"It could be more than that amount into the future. This is a growing cost to government but we know we can afford it," she said.

"We will be able to tell you a bit more once this first year is finished because we know this could affect people's behaviour."

NSW Labor leader Luke Foley criticised the scheme however.

"What we see is a toll policy from this government charging western Sydney motorists $2000 a year to travel on the M4, and most motorists might get back $300 a year," he said.

"The unfair tolls remain and what people will get back is a very small fraction of what they are forking out in high, unaffordable tolls."

What are your thoughts?
