Ethereal photos capture the massive scale of the Gobi Desert
<p>Spanning half a million square miles across China and Mongolia, the Gobi is the largest desert in Asia. When Hungarian fine art and commercial photographer Bence Bakonyi visited Dunhuang to capture the ancient ruins, he was struck by the sheer immensity of the desert, particularly the sand dunes that towered over the many tourists that come to hike them.</p>
<p>His photos were called in his book, <em>Cognition.</em> In an artist statement he says, “the protagonists of the photographs taken in Dunhuang are tourists, the landscape was just as alien and fascinating for them as it was for me when I documented it.”</p>
