Wippa tears up discussing mental health struggles

Michael “Wippa” Wipfli, co-host of Nova FM’s Fitzy & Wippa show, opened up about his mental health while discussing the devastating impact of the pandemic on Aussies’ mental health.

In an emotional discussion on-air in honour of R U OK Day?, Wippa spoke about how Aussies have been faring during the pandemic, saying the mental health crisis is “at a level we’ve never seen before”.

“You can feel a heavy weight hanging over us at the moment. There’s a cloud and it’s getting harder,” he began.

“Every day in the news there is a new headline of somebody taking their own life.”

While he mentioned the toll of Australians of every age, he highlighted how teenagers have been especially affected.

“The impact of lockdown over the past two years has had a devastating effect on mental illness,” he said.

“All ages, but growingly the more, more heartbreaking on our teenagers.”

Starting to read from a post he recently found on social media, Wippa had to visibly collect himself before continuing.

Image: Fitzy & Wippa

“Our neighbour’s son tried to take his own life a few nights ago. He’s now in a coma,” Wippa read out in the clip.

“Last year, we lost six kids from the one school, and another this week. They were all 14 and 15.

“My friend’s a funeral director. She’s taken six weeks off. She said how hard it was seeing so many teenagers take their own life. My friend’s a paramedic, who attended an 11-year-old…” Wippa choked up, unable to finish what he was reading.

“The reason we’re talking about it today is to help people that are struggling, but also to help those who are around those people that might be struggling to offer help and [are] feeling helpless.

“We just need to reinforce for anybody that’s going through that, that there is care here for you. People want to be here for you.”

The conversation then became personal, as Wippa was asked if there were moments where someone reached out to him when he was struggling.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Michael Wipfli (@wippa1)

The host said someone had, and spoke about how he copes with low periods.

“I can see it coming in more detail these days, I just notice patterns within myself if I’m starting to get caught on thoughts, or if I can’t clear my mind as easy, I’m very alert and aware of that, so I don’t go down and spiral further,” he said.

He also shared how he copes while feeling triggered, saying he stops drinking alcohol and tries to exercise as much as he can.

Wippa ended the conversation with a message for those struggling, emphasising that they aren’t alone.

“People become so low, so low, they dip their toe in the deep end of this darkest place, and they think to themselves ‘it would be far better off for my friends and my family if I wasn’t here anymore’. Karl Stefanovic’s royal wedding prank on Sam Armytage

Morning TV hosts Karl Stefanovic and Sam Armytage might be portrayed as fierce rivals in the media, but a playful on-air interview this morning proves you can’t believe everything you read.

Stefanovic, who along with Armytage is in London to cover the royal wedding, was interviewed by Nova radio presenters Fitzy and Wippa this morning and the pair playfully brought up the Today show host's rivalry with his Sunrise counterpart.

“I haven’t run into Kochie, but I have run into Sam and Edwina [Bartholomew] on the flight over and the breakfast buffet. I am deliberately trying to stall their progress over here,” Stefanovic said, tongue planted firmly in cheek.

“We are fierce [rivals], there’s no doubt about that. I can’t stand them. I can’t stand looking at them. I’ve read about how at each other’s throats they were… I think there’s cracks starting to appear,” he continued.

Fitzy and Wippa sensed an opportunity and decided to get Armytage on the phone.

“I just want to have it on the record that there’s no dramas between us. But now, let’s do a sting on her,” Karl laughed.

Soon enough Armytage was on the phone and the pair were (playfully) trading barbs.

“It’s Karl. You might know me from such shows as the Today show in Australia,” Stefanovic told her.

“Look, I’ve never watched it. I’ve heard it’s a bit second rate,” she quipped.

“Yeah, it is second rate — just not in Brisbane, Sydney or Melbourne,” he shot back, a reference to Today’s ratings wins.

After a couple of zingers the conversation wrapped up, and both host reiterated the fact that the relationship between the hosts was friendly and not to believe reports of bad blood on outlets like “the Daily Mail, Woman’s Day or New Idea.”

“Or that bloody Sunrise — just lie after lie, fake news,” Stefanovic added.

What are your thoughts?

When you’re the leader of the opposition, the moments you get to spend out of the public eye are few and far between, which is something your family just has to learn to live with. But it’s not always easy, as Bill Shorten revealed to GQ, who said one candid moment on live radio left his daughter telling the pollie, "You've humiliated me!"

The Labor leader was all over social media last year after facing off in a rap battle with radio host Ray Hadley on the Fitzy and Wippa radio show. Shorten admitted that while he didn’t mind the embarrassment, his children certainly did.

“It’s bloody tough for the kids,” he said.

“Families are not for the faint-hearted. But is it worthwhile? Absolutely. My kids have taught me more than I’ve taught them, I suspect.”

“I spend a lot of my time thinking about my kids. I don’t think the public really know that. I can take pleasure in small things, too. I don’t need expensive cars or overseas trips. For me, summer’s wearing shorts and not having to put on a suit or tie.”

In the far-reaching interview Shorten touched on a lot of topics.

“My loyalties are to my family, the nation and my party — in that order. Personalities and egos can never get so out of whack that they stop you governing and following the interests of your people,” he said.

“I don’t think 2017 was the best year for Australian politics. A third of Australians don’t want to vote for major parties. There’s a message in that for all of us. I share some of the responsibility for the year that was. We got consumed into issues that the politicians thought were important, but don’t speak to the lives of people. If there’s one thing I’d like at the end of my time in politics, it’s for people to come up and say, ‘You weren’t just in it for yourself’.”

What do you make of the interview?

Larry Emdur left red-faced after radio prank goes horribly wrong

Larry Emdur is rarely lost for words while hosting Seven’s The Morning Show, but he was caught off guard on Monday by a live radio incident that left the TV show red-faced.

The television star was the latest person to fall victim to the ‘celebrity screeners’ prank from Nova’s Fitzy and Wippa show, where the program’s hosts Michael 'Wippa' Wipfli and Ryan ‘Fitzy’ Fitzgerald call celebrities and see what happens.

Wippa, who claims to be close friends with Emdur, was sure The Morning Show host would pick up his call, but as you can see from the video below this was not the case.

Wippa had told listeners: “Larry and I are close and when he sees my name on the screen it’ll be, ‘Wippa, how are you mate? What’s going on?’ I bet you that's how he answers the phone.”

But after Emdur refused to pick up, Wippa instructed one of the show’s producers to jump out of their hiding place nearby and confront him.

Wippa told Larry: “Hey mate! This is a segment called celebrity screeners and we just watched you pick up your phone, have a look at me calling and put it back down again... Laz, I’ve just told everybody how we’re mates!”

The visibly embarrassed Emdur defended his actions saying, “We are mates, but you only ever call when you want me to do stupid stuff.”

Emdur continued, “'Aw, man, I'm so sorry, can you maybe text me next time?”

What are your thoughts?

Hero image credit: Facebook / Fitzy & Wippa
