Heartbreaking final message from beloved TV icon

Australian TV icon Fiona MacDonald has died after a "very tough battle" with motor neurone disease, announcing her own death on social media.

Fiona died with her sister Kylie and sons by her side, writing in her final post she had “left the building” in an emotional message shared by her sister.

“Last night brought an end to a very tough few months,” she said.

“Was very peaceful, the boys and Kylie stayed with me to say goodbye. While I’ve never wanted to die, the thought of leaving my tortured body was a relief.”

She went on to detail how she had been struggling in her final months, saying she was "slowly starving, growing weaker and weaker," but even at the very end, always kept her "black humour that served me well through the first years of this journey".

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by fionafinewines (@fionafinewines)

She ended her post writing, "So let’s not call it goodbye as I hope to see you again on the other side. I carry your love and laughter with me and hope you’ll remember mine."

MacDonald was a television regular during the 1980s as the host of popular children’s program Wombat alongside a puppet called Agro, and also the host of the gameshow It’s A Knockout.

Fiona was first diagnose with motor neurone disease in 2021, and had been keeping her fans updated on there health journey on Instagram.

Tributes have flooded MacDonald’s post, with friend and sculptor Cybele Rowe commenting, “What a spectacular human you were here on this planet! #Jacketgate 2 point whatever

Is it #Jacketgate 2.0? Or have we lost count?

Viewers of The Today Show were delighted when co-host Allison Langdon, reporters Lara Vella and Fiona Willan, and Senator Jacqui Lambie all appeared dressed in blue.

An image of all four was shared to the show’s Instagram page captioned “Da ba dee da ba di” in reference to Eiffel 65's iconic track.

“Oh yeah … go sisters! 5 minutes with author Fiona McIntosh

In 5 minutes with author, Over60 asks book writers about their literary habits and preferences. Next in this series is Fiona McIntosh, a novelist and travel magazine co-founder based in South Australia. After years of working in the travel industry, McIntosh made a career switch and became a full-time author. Her latest book The Diamond Hunter is out now.

Over60 talked with McIntosh about the dictionary, revenge stories, and why she doesn’t believe in writer’s block.

Over60: What is the worst writing advice you’ve ever received?

Fiona McIntosh: The worst writing advice I actually watched being delivered to a classroom of adult writers was… ’so here are the rules’. There are no rules!

What book(s) are you reading right now?

Everything I can about the history of champagne, production of champagne during World War I in Epernay, as well as war books about the Marne region during WWI [for my next novel The Champagne Lovers].

On the go novels include A Gentleman in Moscow by Amor Towles, Munich by Robert Harris plus a couple by Le Carré.

What book do you think more people should read?

The dictionary. It’s powerful stuff.

How have the places you’ve been to influenced your writing?

I spent 20 years in the travel industry travelling between the ages of 20 and 40 years. I have spent the last 20 years of my life travelling so that I can write books about the places I have seen. Yes, without any of those places of the past four decades I would not have the inspiration for my stories. It always begins with place for me.

What was the last book that made you laugh or cry?

Everything by Bill Bryson makes me laugh. And I think it’s much harder to win a laugh than a tear.

How do you deal with writer’s block?

By not believing in it. It has no power over me.

Which author, deceased or living, would you most like to have dinner with?

Sharon Penman. The way she brings the deep past back to life for me is inspirational.

Is there a cliché that you can’t help but love?

Revenge stories. Can’t beat them!

5 minutes with author Fiona McArthur

In 5 minutes with author, Over60 asks book writers about their literary habits and preferences. Next in this series is Fiona McArthur, an author based in country New South Wales. Drawing from her life as a former rural midwife, McArthur has shared her experience and love of working with women, fellow medical professionals and the outback community in her fiction and non-fiction books. Her latest novel, The Desert Midwife is out now.

Over60 talked with McArthur about outback heroes, a book series she wished she had written, and a scene she could not bring herself to write.

Over60: What is the worst writing advice you’ve ever received?

Fiona McArthur: That was a question I really had to think about. Most of the writing advice I’ve been given has been all about adding to the toolbox, full of good intentions, and most of it works in some little nugget for me if I interpret it in my way. But, most amusingly, the one that didn’t work for me was, “Write more sex.” I’m sorry. Not me. I’m a closed-door writer, a sweet writer, though sometime characters do surprise me with their intentions, they just have to do it when I’m not looking.

What book(s) are you reading right now?

I’ve gone crazy for Darynda Jones’ paranormal romance works – I love her fast-paced Charley Davidson Series and of course I’m hooked on series books. Which is why I do link my books though each can be read as a stand-alone book. I can’t help wanting to revisit past towns and people. I should say I mostly read on audiobooks.

What was the last book that made you cry or laugh?

Darynda Jones’ Eleventh Grave in Moonlight.

What book do you think is underrated? Alternatively, is there any book that you think gets more credit than it deserves?

I think Mills & Boon medical romance novels are underrated. Australian Marion Lennox is a writer who has the most amazing small town, feel good, incredibly three-dimensional romances that can change your day to smiles. She’s a romance author and is underrated for the star she is. Her 120th book just came out.

What are the tropes that you can’t help but love? Alternatively, which trope grinds your gears?

I love ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Like single mum makes it big. Like outback heroes. Like midwives and doctors who live to help people/patients/clients/ mums when they are vulnerable. I don’t like violence and unhappy endings.

Is there any book you wish you had written?

Absolutely. Outlander – also known as Cross Stitch – LOVE that book. Though I skimmed the really violent parts.

How do you deal with writer’s block?

I haven’t suffered yet, sympathy to those who have, and I hope I won’t. 500 words a day keeps me going forward. There are much faster days but if I feel blocked just 500 words will do. Even if it’s on a different project. But don’t stop writing.

Which three authors – living or deceased – would you most like to have dinner with?

Peter O’Donnell/Madeleine Brent – he was my author hero when I was young and he taught me about strong heroines and having men as friends. Georgette Heyer who taught me about subtle humour and, again, strong heroines. And for the third, I’d say Diana Gabaldon but I’d be in too much awe, so Darynda Jones as she’d be hilarious as a dinner guest.

To make it to the last day, it sort of doesn’t matter if you are first, second or third out of that. To make it through the whole thing is just amazing.”

What are your thoughts?
