5 reasons travel is good for you

Aside from being an enjoyable experience and a chance to make unforgettable memories, travelling has some positive benefits for both your physical and mental health.

Though we might not be able to travel now, looking forward to a time when we can travel again can help improve our mental health.

“This virus can stop our travel plans, but it cannot stop our travel dreams,” says travel expert Rick Steves in conversation with The New York Times.

Here are five ways travelling can improve our physical and mental health.

1. Travel relieves stress

With daily life full of stressful moments, booking in some travel can be a perfect antidote.

“The stress of work and daily demands can distract us from what we find to be actually meaningful and interesting,” says Dr Tamara McClintock Greenberg, a clinical psychologist.

Taking a break to travel can help us put stressors on the backburner, which can lower our cortisol levels and leave us feeling more calm and content.

“It also helps us reflect on our personal goals and interests,” Dr Greenberg says.

And the style of travel we choose can also help ease travel-related stresses.

For example, hopping on a cruise opens up the number of destinations to visit without the dreaded unpacking and repacking of luggage between destinations.

Plus, cruises such as the Cunard often offer a suite of activities to partake in – from relaxing afternoon teas to exciting West End production shows and thought-provoking talks with guest speakers.

2. You’ll feel recharged and reduce the risk of burning out

As well as feeling more calm and content, taking some time off to travel can reduce feelings of burnout and help us feel better prepared to handle work and life’s other responsibilities when we return.

A 2013 study of 485 adults in the US found a link between travel and enhanced attention, energy, and focus, while a 2014 study found that the anticipation of a planned trip makes a person much happier than buying material goods.

“Compared to possessions, experiences make for better story material,” says Amit Kumar, one of the co-authors of the 2014 study.

3. Experience fewer health complaints

As well as improving mood, travel can also positively affect physical health complaints, such as headaches and disturbed sleep.

The 2000 study found that participants who found their travel restorative also reported fewer physical complaints than before their trip, lasting up to five weeks after the holiday had ended.

5. It could make you more open-minded

Though already being open to new experiences can influence whether we travel and what we choose to do, travel can also affect us in similar ways.

For example, long-term travel - such as a gap year or cruise - can increase our openness to experiences and how warm and empathetic we are, as well as making us more easygoing.

According to Adam Galinsky, a professor at Columbia University Business School, travel can also increase our cognitive flexibility – especially when we immerse ourselves in the environment where we are travelling to.

“The key, critical process is multicultural engagement, immersion and adaptation,” Galinsky says. “Someone who lives abroad and doesn’t engage with the local culture will likely get less of a creative boost than someone who travels abroad and really engages in the local environment.”

Regardless of whether you plan to travel domestically or internationally, there are plenty of benefits to be had from booking a holiday or two.

And, if you are savvy about your travel plans you could reap all the benefits while saving money. The luxury liner lets you cruise with your dog Cunard

One of the only downsides of booking a holiday is having to leave our (furrier) loved ones at home. But if you can’t stand to part with your four-legged friend, we’ve got some good news. A luxury cruise line is now accommodating dogs.

Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 has a whole deck dedicated to pooches of all shapes and sizes, with plenty of fenced outdoor space for dogs to walk about and get their sea legs.

The world’s only kennel at sea has a dedicated space (and even doggy furniture) for every mutt lucky enough to find its way on a cruise as well as a complimentary fire hydrant for the dogs to take care of their… ahem… business.

How does a #GreatDane #exercise on a #cruiseship? #Servicedog Kringle demonstrates! #Travel #Cruise #Ahoy! #Running #DogsAreFun #Dogs pic.twitter.com/U8LddNEI4k
— Service Dog Project (@ServiceDogPr) June 2, 2017

Cunard is the only cruise line with a dedicated area for dogs, but other lines will generally let you bring your pooch on the ship if it is a service animal.

Would you be willing to take your dog on a cruise?

What cruise line dress codes actually mean

Packing for a cruise holiday is hard enough, especially if you haven’t sailed on the high seas before. What makes it even more difficult is the oft-disputed “dress codes”.

Cruises with formal dining areas, themed party nights and restricted areas often come with dress codes like “formal”, “elegant casual” and “semi-formal”.

But what do these dress codes mean?

Well, while these dress codes vary from line to line (and are less strict than they were in previous years) it’s useful to look at an example. Cunard, a line that captures the tradition of cruising in years past, offers this guide to what to pack for a seven-night voyage with three formal, two semi-formal and two elegant casual evenings:

Formal: Black tie or a formal dark suit for men, evening dress or smart trouser suit for women. Men can hire tuxedos and accessories on board.

Semi-formal: Jacket and tie for men, cocktail dress or stylish separates for women.

Elegant casual: Jacket (no tie required) for men, dress, skirt or trousers and tops for women.

If this sounds like a bit much, there are plenty of cruise lines with more relaxed dress codes. And lines generally include a description in the FAQ of their websites.

Do you like to get dressed up for a cruise? Or do you prefer a holiday with a more relaxed vibe? On board Queen Victoria's exclusive cruise

There's a slight problem as we wait to enter Britannia, the plush restaurant spread over decks two and three of the Queen Victoria cruise ship.

It seems several of our party are sartorially challenged in that we are not sporting jackets and one of us is, gasp, wearing a short-sleeved shirt.

There are standards to be upheld, it seems.

In the end it is explained, in hushed tones, that we are media, on board for a two-night Melbourne-Sydney preview of what the 2016/17 season might hold.

This is not in an effort to get special treatment.

Instead, it is whispered in the voice you use to apologise for your toddler and his failure to read the pre-boarding literature.

That literature, by the way, explains the "informal" dress code thus: "Jacket required, tie optional for gentlemen, cocktail dress, stylish separates or equivalent for ladies.

After 6pm shorts and blue or worn denim (for men and women); sandals and sleeveless tops (for men) are not considered appropriate within the ship."

There's more but you get the drift; the Queen Victoria's nod to the 21st century is "tie optional".

The maitre d' finally agrees to let us in just this once, though from his expression – he looks like a chihuahua chewing a chilli — he is not happy.

Still, crisis averted we head through the stunning two-floor restaurant under the baleful glares of several (jacketed) guests appalled at our overly casual appearance.

This is by no means a complaint. It is simply an anecdote to give an idea of what to expect on board the Queen Victoria.

It's what James Cusick, Cunard's Hotel general manager, calls the Downton Abbey effect – the increasing number of cruisers who "like the formality, like the white gloves at afternoon tea", who want the jacket and collared shirt rule, who like tradition and yearn for the days of politesse, elegance, grace and dress codes.

This, after all, is a ship of white-gloved waiters, staff in immaculate uniforms, of afternoon tea, bridge clubs, ballroom dancing and two seatings (6pm and 8.30pm) for dinner.

None of this freestyle "lob-up-any-time-you-like" jeans and T-shirts lark that holds sway on some of the more informal cruise ships.

The Queen Victoria set off on its maiden voyage on December 11, 2007, joining sister ships the Queen Mary 2 and the Queen Elizabeth in Cunard's royal trilogy. It's actually hard to believe it's that new.

From the outside it looks like your common-or-garden beautiful cruise ship – all sweeping bow and sleek lines bristling up top with up-to-the-minute technological gee-gaws – but inside it's a different matter.

To step inside is to step back to a gentler, more tender, more civilised age. The 1920s or 1930s, perhaps.

The public areas look like the only things missing are Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple sticking their noses into the two-storey library with its spiral wooden staircase or sleuthing around in the Champagne Bar and the heady fug of the Cigar Lounge.

There's wood – lots of wood – and marble and brass and chandeliers and bevelled mirrors all done in the classic art deco fashion epitomising, as it did then and this grand ship does now, luxury, glamour, high spirits and faith in technological progress.

Doesn’t the Queen Victoria sound incredible? Have you ever cruised with this ship, and could you see yourself doing so in the future?

Let us know in the comments.

First appeared on Stuff.co.nz.

Related links:

Incredible images of a beach villa-style cruise liner

Family band together to give grandmother trip of a lifetime

12 things you have to know about river cruises
