“Thank you stranger”: Woolies shopper left stunned

A shopper at Woolworths was left shocked after a cashier’s unexpected act at the checkout.

The single mum shared her feel-good story in a post on Facebook.

“There was such a beautiful young lady working the checkout register tonight,” she wrote in the post.

“I had a rough day, and when she asked how my day was, I answered with: ‘Not a great one’.”

The mum-of-three was paying for her groceries with vouchers she’d been gifted from friends who wanted to “lend a hand” as her family was struggling.

After she put her shop through the checkout, the vouchers didn’t cover the entire cost, so she asked the cashier to take a bag of bread rolls off the total.

The Woolies worker surprised the mum by covering the cost of the bread rolls herself.

“I don’t recall her name, but I feel that she deserves a massive thank you, as she made my day and turned it around with her kindness,” the mum said.

“So thank you stranger - you made an old tired mum have faith there’s still kindness in the world.”

Woolworths responded to the mum’s Facebook post and said they would share her feedback with the store’s management team so the staff member can be acknowledged for her random act of kindness.

“Magician” thief tricks shopkeeper out of $100

In a scene that wouldn’t seem out of place in a heist movie, a thief with “magician-like” skills has managed to trick a shopkeeper from Wollongong out of $100, with a clever (and very sneaky) slight of hand that has social media users stunned.

The CCTV footage, which you can see below, was shared by the shop’s owner George Akary, and at first glance it looks as though a relatively normal exchange.

But as is often the case with these kind of scams, the devil is in the detail.

“What do you see happening here?” Akary writes onhis Facebook page.

“How many notes went missing?”

According to Akary, the man paid using a $100 note. The cashier handing him a $50 note and coins as change, and that’s when he commenced his sleight of hand.

The man hands her coins to distract her, pocketing the cash before claiming he’s been denied $50. The confusion continues as the man retains more notes, but at this point it seems as though the cashier has become wise to the game.

Akary told the Illawarra Mercury the cashier initially hadn’t realised how much he’d taken.

“She thought she’d only let go $2.70,” Mr Akary said.

“I’ve got the rule that if anyone’s got an issue, that they can come back and speak to the manager, but he just managed to confuse her.

“She was really shook up. She just didn’t know what to do or how to react.

“He’s like a magician because, even watching [the video footage], it confused me.”

The matter has been reported to local police.

Hero image: George Akary / Facebook

Target cashier’s kindness to customer goes viral

A Target employee in the US has become famous on the internet after his kindness to a customer went viral.

Ishmael Gilbert, 19, a cashier at an Indiana store was patient and polite when helping an older customer, who wanted to pay for each item individually and in change, earlier this week.

The moment of kindness was captured by Sarah Owen Bigler, a customer waiting in line. Initially, Bigger, who was with her two young children, was in a big rush and getting frustrated by the slow pace of the lady in front of her. But when she realised the unexpected kindness on display in front of her, she quickly realised it was a moment to be praised.

She wrote on her Facebook: “Part of me, the part that had a long day at work, the part of me who had a one-and-a-half year old having a melt down in the cart, the part that had set an unnecessary timeline for Target and getting home, was frustrated with this woman and the inconvenience she had placed on me.

“But then I watched the young employee with this woman. I watched him help her count her change, ever so tenderly taking it from her shaking hands. I listened to him repeatedly saying, ‘Yes, mam,’ to her.”

Sarah then noticed her young children were closely watching the scene.

“As I was watching him, I saw that Eloise was too. She was standing next to the woman, watching the employee count the change. I realised I hadn't been inconvenienced at all. That my daughter was instead witnessing kindness and patience and being taught this valuable lesson by a complete stranger; furthermore, I realised that I too needed a refresher on this lesson,” she wrote.

Sarah’s post quickly began to go viral, with thousands of people sharing her message and praising the kind teenager.

Ishmael was stunned to discover his new online popularity, but pleased that he could set a good example.

“It just feels good to be recognized for good work,” he said, but added, “But this isn't something new. I treat all customers the same, the way I want to be treated.”

Related links:

These are the happiest countries in the world

Older generations better at learning than everyone else

8 ways to be a good person today
