The surprising competitor Aldi is targeting next

Ever since it first opened its doors down under, Aldi has been issuing challenge after challenge to Australia’s long-standing supermarket duopoly of Coles and Woolworths. But now, the German retail giant is setting its sights beyond its usual competitors.

News.com.au reports Aldi is taking on boating, camping and fishing equipment chain BCF with its current special buys, which has on offer a caravan cover for $99.99, a privacy screen for $29.99, a levelling ramp/chock set for $19.99 and a dog anchor for $9.99.

And with the Easter holidays just around the corner, it’s a smart move by the German retailer. According to Caravanning Queensland CEO Ron Chapman, parks across the state have already been booked out ahead of the break.

“The eight divisions gave their reports and all bookings are extremely solid,” he told news.com.au. “There are always some doubts about bookings when there is an early Easter because of the shorter gap between school’s going back in January and the Easter holidays are so soon afterwards.

“Sometimes that combined with bad weather at Christmas can slow down Easter bookings and also if it was wet or dry the previous Easter because if it was wet, people tend to hold back until closer to the date.

Chapman added that a strong Christmas period has helped bolster bookings for March and April.

“Usually Easter bookings are strong if it’s been fine over Christmas, which it was, and that has helped,” he said.

“The big markets at Easter is families … they tend to be in camper trailers or differently configured, multi-bed caravans, to grey nomads who you see more in winter are in mobile homes or hardtop caravans with two beds.”

Tell us in the comments below, do you have any camping plans for the Easter holidays?
