Nelson Mandela's granddaughter dies at just 43

Zoleka Mandela, the granddaughter of Nelson Mandela, has died of cancer at the age of 43. She passed away on the evening of Monday, September 25th, surrounded by friends and family.

Mandela had been battling cancer for several years. She was first diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 32, but went into remission. However, the cancer returned last year and had metastasised to her liver and lungs.

Despite her illness, Mandela remained active in her community and continued to advocate for cancer prevention and awareness. She was also a vocal advocate for road safety after her 13-year-old daughter, Zenani, was killed in a car crash in 2010.

In an interview with Kaya FM in April, Mandela said: "I'm learning to be okay with my eventuality."

“The Nelson Mandela Foundation extends its heartfelt condolences to the Mandela family on the passing of Zoleka Mandela, tragically last night,” the Nelson Mandela Foundation said in a statement. “We mourn the loss of a beloved grandchild of Mum Winnie and Madiba and a friend of the Foundation.”

Zoleka's frank disclosures about her illness and her strength in the face of adversity earned her a devoted following on social media.

"Utterly tragic loss of a human being in her grandfather's footsteps. A decent, honest human being in a dishonest, hypocritical world," one person on X, formerly Twitter, said.

"You were one of the bravest people I know and you inspired many people on your life's journey of hope," another person wrote on Instagram below the Mandela family's announcement.

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Zoleka Zobuhle Mandela (@zolekamandela)

Mandela was only 10 years old when her grandfather was released from prison in 1990 after 27 years in detention. "I can't wake Mummy up": Olympian dies at 43

A former Olympic swimmer has passed away suddenly at the age of 43 while on a trip with her family.

Helen Smart, a British swimming champion who competed at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, was found unresponsive by her four-year-old daughter Heidi when she tried to climb into bed with her parents.

Heidi then woke up her father Craig Smart, saying, "Daddy, I can't wake Mummy up," before Craig discovered his wife lying next to him dead.

Smart's mother confirmed the news of her passing, telling the MailOnline, "Heidi had woken up in the night and tried to get into bed with her. She said to her daddy, 'Mummy won't wake up''. He said, 'Oh, she must be very tired Heidi - you go back to bed'."

"He put the torch on and he said later that when he looked he could tell."

Linda continued, "We're distraught. They don't know what it is but they think it must have happened shortly after she went to bed. She just died in her sleep."

Just hours before her sudden passing, Helen and her family had been paddle boarding in the north of England, while on a trip for her brother Robert's 40th birthday.

Helen had not been suffering with any illnesses her family knew of.

Linda said, "At midnight, she went to bed telling me: 'I'll go to bed now mum as I know I'll be woken at 6am by Heidi. I just want to get some sleep in as I've had a long day.'"

Linda was then woken by Robert at 4am who said, "Mum, dad, you need to keep up - we think Helen's died."

Smart's father John said he and his wife "can't comprehend how she could simply go to sleep and not wake up."

Helen became a school principal after her retirement from swimming and was enjoying her new life.

Craig Smart took to her school's Facebook page to say his wife "loved the school, staff, children and parents so much."

"She was so proud to reach her goal of being Head Teacher," he continued. 43 vintage photos of Queen Elizabeth II before she became Queen

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was the United Kingdom's longest reigning monarch, having ascended the throne in 1952 at age 25. Following the sad news of her passing at the age of 96, here are some snapshots of what her life was like before her coronation.

1926: Her Royal Highness Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary is born

Princess Elizabeth Alexandra Mary of York was born on April 21, 1926. She’s pictured here with her mother, Elizabeth, the Duchess of York, who was the wife of Prince Albert “Bertie” of York. Since Bertie was the second-born son of the reigning monarch, King George V, no one, and least of all the princess, herself, had any clue Elizabeth would one day be queen. Here, she’s just a sweet firstborn daughter of the “spare” heir.

A mum, a dad and a newborn princess

When Prince Albert (called “Bertie” by his friends and family) married Lady Elizabeth Bowes Lyon, the two became the Duke and Duchess of York. Here, the Duke and Duchess are pictured with their newborn, Her Royal Highness Princess Elizabeth of York.

1927: Lilibet at 14 months

When Princess Elizabeth was learning to speak, she had trouble pronouncing her name, referring to herself as “Lilibet,” and the name stuck. Lilibet was a happy and friendly child and the darling of her grandparents, King George V and Queen Mary. Outgoing and plucky, Lilibet was one of the few people on the planet who wasn’t intimidated by the man she called “Grandpa England,” whom she led by his beard as if he were a horse, according to TIME.

Just out of the terrible twos

In this sweet family portrait from 1929, the Duke of York smiles at his toddler daughter, who sits on her mum’s lap.

Daddy’s in military garb; a princess salutes

In this photo taken the summer of 1931, the Duke exits the car in military garb after his wife and daughter, while Princess Elizabeth salutes members of the military.

1932: Still a cosy, normal childhood

Arriving at the Royal Tournament in 1932, Princess Elizabeth was dressed like the proper princess that she was, but she generally lived a quiet life outside the spotlight. Until the birth of her sister, Princess Margaret Ann, she played with the children of businessmen and doctors, as opposed to the children of royals. Princess Margaret was a playful influence on her sister, who was, as is often the case with older siblings, more conscientious and responsible.

Playing house

In their childhood, Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret had an adorable miniature house that was a gift from the people of Wales. In this 1933 photo, the two princesses pose with their pups and their parents outside the tiny house.

The Princess bridesmaid

Young Princess Elizabeth was a bridesmaid at the November 1934 wedding of Prince George, Duke of Kent (a younger brother of George) to Princess Marina of Greece and Denmark. Elizabeth is pictured here with her dad, the Duke of York, but what’s most notable about this photo is that it was taken the same day Elizabeth first met her future husband, Philip Mountbatten, who was Prince of Greece and Denmark at the time.

Kids Day at the Horse Show

The Duke and Duchess of York and Princess Elizabeth arrive at the Richmond Horse Show for an array of Children’s Day events on June 14, 1935.

A family portrait from 1936

As it turned out, 1936 would be an especially important year for this family, though they couldn’t have known it at the moment this photo was snapped. Earlier that year, King George V had died, and his firstborn son, King Edward VIII, had ascended to the throne. But it wasn’t to last.

Everything was about to change

Pictured with two of her Corgis in 1936, Princess Elizabeth likely has little awareness of the constitutional crisis brewing as a result of King Edward VIII’s romance with the still-married, once-divorced American, Wallis Simpson. Her divorce, among other things, made her an inappropriate king’s “consort,” but Edward declared his intention to marry her and make her his queen. By the end of 1936, Edward would abdicate after learning the British people wouldn’t be able to support their King’s marriage to a divorcee, leaving Elizabeth’s father, Bertie, as King (King George VI) and Elizabeth as the presumptive heir. One thing that hasn’t changed, even today? Elizabeth’s love of Corgis.

A newly crowned King and his family

This photo was taken on the balcony of Buckingham Palace just after the coronation of King George VI on May 12, 1937. From left to right, we see the new Queen Elizabeth, Princess Elizabeth, the Dowager Queen Mary, Princess Margaret, and the newly crowned King.

New King, Queen and heir presumptive

When this photo was taken in 1937, King George VI had just recently ascended the throne. Princess Elizabeth was now the heir presumptive. That isn’t the same thing as an heir apparent; there was still the theoretical possibility that the King would father a male child and, in those days, a younger brother would have taken Elizabeth’s place in the line of succession. This rule, known as “male primogeniture,” ended during Queen Elizabeth II’s reign.

The future Queen and her sister at play

Princess Margaret famously expressed her “sympathy” for what lay ahead of her dear older sister.

A day at the theatre

King George VI, accompanied by his wife, Queen Elizabeth, and their daughter, Princess Elizabeth, arrive at the Coliseum Theatre in London for a charity matinee on March 27, 1938.

Not the cheap seats

King George VI, Queen Elizabeth, and Princess Elizabeth are seen attending the theatre on March 27, 1939, to benefit The King George VI Pension Fund for Actors and Actresses.

The royal wave

On June 22, 1939, the royal family, having just returned from their royal Canadian tour, appear on the balcony of Buckingham Palace.

A visit to Dartmouth Naval College

In this photo, taken during a July 1939 visit to Dartmouth Naval College, Princess Elizabeth plants a tree while her father looks on and holds the hand of Elizabeth’s younger sister, Princess Margaret.

A photo of the King taking a photo

At an August 1939 event at Abergeldie Castle, which is not far from Scotland’s Balmoral Castle, King George VI, wearing a kilt, holds a camera to his face. He was an avid photographer, a hobby Queen Elizabeth II adopted.

Elizabeth as a lover of animals

Queen Elizabeth II was one of, if not the, most famous animal lovers in the world. Here she’s seen in 1939 feeding one of the elephants at the London Zoo. Later in life, Elizabeth received one as a gift from the President of Cameroon in 1972.

A closely-knit family

This photo, taken in 1942, shows the royal family, including Princess Elizabeth, 16, doing some knitting for the British troops.

All the pretty horses

Queen Elizabeth started riding at age three and owned many horses throughout her life. Here she is in 1943, at age 17, with one of her many horses during Harvest Time at Sandringham in Norfolk.

A princess’s first tour

On April 4, 1944, Princess Elizabeth, Queen Elizabeth, and King George VI stood in a scout car during an inspection of royal artillery units. It was Princess Elizabeth’s first full-length tour with her parents.

The heir presumptive turns 18

The 18th birthday of an heir (apparent or presumptive) signifies the heir could become monarch at any time without the need for a regent to act on his/her behalf. Here, Elizabeth answers a telephone greeting on her 18th birthday, April 21, 1944.

Young Elizabeth follows in her father’s footsteps

In this photo of the royal family taken on the balcony of Buckingham Palace in 1945, Princess Elizabeth wears a military uniform, following in the footsteps of her dad.

1945: A Princess does her military duty

It took a lot of cajoling, but eventually, Elizabeth got her father, King George VI to agree to allow her to join the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service during World War II, for which she donned coveralls and trained as a mechanic and truck driver and was known as “Second Subaltern Elizabeth Windsor.” According to History, the Queen is the only female royal family member to have entered the armed forces. She may also be the only royal female who can change a spark plug.

A laugh between Dad and daughter

Here, we see the king sharing a laugh with his oldest daughter in 1946.

The Princess does her duty for fashion

The current Princesses of the United Kingdom are not the first to have been on almost constant style-watch. Here, Princess Elizabeth is pictured in 1946 modelling what can only be described as a truly fabulous, fashion-forward hat.

1947: A future Queen’s promise

On April 21, 1947, on the occasion of her 21st birthday, Princess Elizabeth announces her intention to serve as Queen for life (when the time comes) and promises her loyalty and faithfulness in serving. Some say this speech was her commitment to never abdicate.

Meet the (royal) family

In 1947, Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten, RN, asked Her Royal Highness Princess Elizabeth for her hand in marriage. She accepted. The wedding day had some hiccups, which includes the “tiara incident” that occurred just before this photo was taken.

Wedding day

On November 20, 1947, Princess Elizabeth and Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten were married at Westminster Abbey. To marry Elizabeth, Philip, who was born into the royal families of Greece and Denmark, had to renounce his birth titles (Prince of Greece and Denmark). Bought for $225k, sold for $43 million

Three siblings from southeast Melbourne have become multi-millionaires overnight after selling their family’s former pea farm in Officer.

The life changing sale saw the siblings sell the 12.3 hectare Rix Road block for $43 million last week - $11 million above the reserve price - after attracting local and international developers looking to snap up the urban growth zone site.

According to CoreLogic records, the property last sold in 1988 for just $225,000.

Image: realestate.com.au

The Sun Herald reported that the siblings and their elderly mother were the beneficiaries of the trio’s late stepfather’s estate, which included the land.

CBRE agent David Minty, who brokered the sale along with fellow CBRE agents, said the three siblings were aged in their 50s and had “standard” day jobs.

“They weren’t wealthy people so this is completely life changing for them,” he said.

“It’s a really special sale just knowing how life changing it is for this particular family. You go from a simple day job, you don’t have a huge amount of money, and all of a sudden you’ve got a sizable sum. They’ve always been a private, courteous and respectful family. They may just maintain their same lifestyles - they’re not flashy people.”

Mr Minty said the land had formerly been used to grow peas, and he believed the siblings’ grandfather had worked as a farmer for former Governor-General and federal minister Lord Richard Casey, which the City of Casey was named after.

Developers YouLand and Satterley have projects surrounding the block, but YourLand, backed by Japanese company Nippon, was able to secure the sale.

“We’re experiencing strong demand from developers looking to secure development pipelines in this region, which is unlikely to be satisfied in a market which is very short on appropriately zoned or earmarked landholdings,” said Mr Murfale, who also brokered the deal.

It is understood that the buyer paid more than it hoped for, having first offered the family $27 million off-market last year.

“The sale price smashes all metrics achieved for a development site sale in Officer, representing a record rate of $3.65 million per hectare,” Mr Minty said.

“Whether it’s a shift in mindset with COVID, with people wanting to live out in the areas and buy their own house and set up their families, [the demand is] just quite extraordinary.”

Girl missing for 43 years finally identified

An American murder victim known for 43 years as Jane Doe #40 has been identified by investigators as 14-year-old Judy Gifford, who disappeared at the age of 14.

The breakthrough came after homicide cold case detectives and missing person investigators launched a joint investigation in early 2019.

Reported by the San Francisco Chronicle, in a tragic turn of events, investigators shared that Ms Gifford’s aunt kept the same phone number for decades in case her niece attempted to get in touch.

What remained of the teenager was discovered by a man walking his dog near San Francisco’s Lake Merced on October 1, 1976. Police found a gold chain with an owl pendant in the girl’s pocket.

While sifting through unsolved cases, investigators stumbled upon a report filed in 2017 that said Ms Gifford had disappeared in San Francisco around the same time that Jane Doe #40 was killed in 1976, said San Francisco police.

The missing girl’s half-brother, William Shin, reported his sister missing to San Francisco police at an unknown date after he “remembered having a sister when he was a child”, said a New Jersey State Police spokesperson.

“He told investigators that his sister went missing when she was 14 years old, and his family had not seen or heard from her since 1976.”

Back in June, detectives collected cheek swabs from Ms Gifford’s paternal aunt, Ogee Gifford along with photographs and dental records.

That’s when they had an epiphany, as Ms Gifford was wearing a necklace with an owl pendant in some of the photos. They then compared her DNA with Jane Doe #40’s and got a perfect match.

“(Ogee) Gifford, who has never changed her phone number in case her niece ever called, was brought some closure as a result of the joint effort,” said police in a statement.

Investigators have reopened a murder inquiry into Ms Gifford’s death.

Chocolate thief apologises to Woolworths with note 43 years later

A remorseful thief has made amends for his childhood behaviour by contacting the supermarket he stole from 43 years ago.

Belle Vale Shopping Centre in Liverpool, UK took to Facebook to say their faith in humanity had been restored after receiving a letter and a £5 note in the mail.

“I stole two bars of chocolate from Woolworths in your shopping centre in 1975, when I was a little boy,” the note read.

“I apologise, I didn’t know any better here’s the money I owe you for them.”

After four decades, the supermarket he stole from was unfortunately no longer in business, meaning his £5 ($AU8.92) will be donated to the centre’s chosen charity – Zoe’s Place baby hospice.

“In a time of division, it is great to see an act of kindness that restores faith in humanity,” a spokesperson for the shopping centre told the Liverpool Echo.

“Belle Vale Shopping Centre wants to thank the sender and acknowledge his apology. It is a positive message that is worth sharing to encourage all to be kind.”

The gesture, however, drew mixed reactions from social media, with many wondering why the adult had the handwriting of a child.

“Why does it look like a kid wrote this when it’s clearly a fully grown adult,” one man asked.

“As an adult I love the way he’s spelt chocolate,” another added.

“That’s why Woolworths went under,” one woman joked.

Australia’s fuel crisis: Only 43 days before “real trouble”

Australia is heading towards trouble according to energy experts, with supply of one of our major commodities expected to run out in a matter of days.

The Australian reports Australia is at high risk of running out of fuel by the end of next month, due to supply issues exacerbated by the Syria attacks.

The International Energy Agency mandates countries hold a fuel stock in reserve “equivalent to 90 days of net imports” but according to reports Australia only has 43 days of supply.

Liberal Senator Jim Molan, who was once a major general in the Australian Army, told 2GB, “we stand in real trouble and this is a single point of failure for Australia, very similar to what could happen in a cyber situation”.

“It happens because for too long we have taken a business as usual approach.

“It’s like saying we can determine the size and shape of the Australian Defence Force based on commercial factors and making the market decide.

“The way that we seem to get around this is that we buy credits overseas which ignores the entire problem.

“Those credits say that if things go wrong we can buy from overseas but hang on our supply lines of communication by ship are likely to be either threatened or because of insurers nothing will come to us at all.”

“It’s refined in Singapore, yes, but it’s also refined in Japan, in Korea and in China. It then is turned into diesel, aviation fuel and petrol and comes down in ships to Australia’s ports.”

Mr Molan’s comments have been backed by Defence Strategy and Capability at the Australian Strategic Policy Institute senior analyst Dr Malcolm Davis, who says Australia’s fuel reserves would not last long if supply was cut off.

“It would be a Mad Max world. Our society and our economy would begin to fall apart very quickly,” Dr Davis told News.com.au.

“It’s like electricity — everything depends on fuel to make an economy run. It is very serious.

“We’ve left ourselves in a perilous situation and governments on both sides have been negligent in this regard.

“Military analysts have been warning consistently for years and they just ignore it.”

What are your thoughts? Do you think enough it being done to shore up Australia’s fuel supply? Let us know in the comments section below, we’d love to hear from you.

Woman finds closure 43 years after the disappearance of her father

When a rusted green car was pulled out of a lake in North Carolina on July 21 little did investigators know they had found the answers to a 43-year-old mystery of a father’s disappearances.

Human remains were found inside the car, which had been submerged 10 metres below water. Crucially, there was a wallet, and that wallet belonged to Amos Shook who had been missing since 1972.

The retired Air Force member didn’t return home one night, leaving behind five children, including a 14-year-old daughter. The daughter, Pamela Shook Kolbe, had been told her father likely abandoned his family of his own will but it was a theory Kolbe never believed. Last month, she asked police to reopen the cold case. As part of the investigation, they searched the lake with solar technology.

A 57-year-old Kolbe, who now lives in Tennessee, was overcome with emotion when she received the call from the Sheriff's Office. “He said, 'Pam, we found your daddy's car.' It was like I lost all of my blood," Kolbe told Channel 9. “It was so overwhelming for me... I've waited and waited for this.”

Authorities still don’t know what happened that night. Kolbe still wonders how her father’s car ended up in a lake but is relieved by the closure, finally putting to rest the idea that he abandoned his family.

"If he had been alive, he would have been in touch with us," she said. "He was a good man, he was a good daddy."

The Shook family had declared Amos Shook dead nine years after his disappearance, and are thankful that his remains can finally rest at the site.

Related links:

Woman adopts her best friend’s four daughters following her death

Northern Territory to become Australia’s seventh state

Senior “girl group” takes Japan by storm
