Tragic accident claims pregnant Hollyoaks actress at just 38

Former Hollyoaks actress, best known for her role at Jess Holt on the Channel 4 series, has died at 38.

The actress was reportedly travelling with her two sons and nephew when she stopped to answer a phone call on the M66 hard shoulder near Greater Manchester in the United Kingdom.

The 38 year old - who is believed to have been 18 weeks pregnant at the time of the incident - was then struck by a speeding vehicle. Frankie, her nine-year-old son Tommy and two-year-old Rocky, as well as her four-year-old nephew Tobias, were all airlifted to hospital.

The Mirror have reported that Tommy and Tobias were put into medically included comas, while Frankie sadly passed away with her partner, Calvin, “frantically by her side”.

The devastating crash occurred on May 14, but the news has only come to the public’s attention since Frankie’s former co-star, Paul Danan, paid a series of emotional tributes on social media.

Frankie had been on Hollyoaks between 2000 and 2001, where Paul had had the honour of playing her character’s boyfriend, Sol Patrick.

Paul shared pictures of their time together working on Hollyoaks, as well as some more recent pictures of his late friend, along with the caption “I just heard the most shocking upsetting news I've heard in such a long time.

“Another good good friend who was such a special person has sadly passed away while carrying her unborn baby and her 2 little boys and nephew who were in the car too. They had a terrible car accident.”

He went on to share that the driver responsible for the crash had been charged, before linking the GoFundMe that had been set up to support Frankie’s loved ones and “to help them get through the most traumatic incident they have been through.”

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Paul L Danan (@pauldanan)

He later shared another series of images and a new caption, writing of his heartbreak over how “Frankie will never get to see her family again” and how “her unborn child … never even got a chance in life, let alone her two little Gorgeous boys and nephew [who] won't see their mum or aunty again.”

Paul wrote that his “heart and prayers” went out to Frankie’s boys and her husband, and added that the horrific news “just solidifies things for me about driving dangerously or fast especially when not in a good head space. Coronation Quiche anyone? You’ll need to fork out A$38. Here are cheaper and healthier options

If you are a monarchist, or just enjoy the tradition of the royal family, you may have heard about the Coronation Quiche – made with spinach, broad beans and tarragon.

The idea is for us to make it and share it with friends and family during the coronation celebrations in May. King Charles and Queen Consort Camilla have just shared a recipe.

Introducing… Coronation Quiche!

Chosen personally by Their Majesties, The King and The Queen Consort have shared a recipe in celebration of the upcoming #CoronationBigLunch taking place up and down the country. pic.twitter.com/aVcw9tNarP

— The Royal Family (@RoyalFamily) April 17, 2023

As dietitians, we’re interested in the quiche’s nutritional value. So we analysed its contents and found that although it’s quite a healthy dish, we could make a healthier version. Spoiler alert: the original recipe contains lard (pork fat).

We’ve also found we could make the quiche using cheaper or more easily available ingredients.

What exactly is a quiche?

Today, most people consider quiche a French dish that’s essentially a savoury pie. It typically consists of a pastry crust filled with a mixture of eggs, cream and cheese, plus various other ingredients such as veggies, meat and herbs.

Quiche can be served hot or cold. You can have it for breakfast, lunch or dinner with salad or veggies.

How much does it cost?

Quiches are usually quite economical to make. Most of the basic ingredients are cheap, and you can adapt the fillings depending on what’s in the fridge or left over from recent meals.

Let’s see if this applies to the Coronation Quiche. We split the costs into typical quantities you can buy at the shops (for instance, six eggs) and the costs to make the quiche (which only needs two eggs).

If you make the quiche from scratch and have to buy the ingredients in quantities sold in the shops, this will cost you almost A$38. Although this may seem a lot, you’ll have some ingredients left over for another meal.

So how much do the ingredients cost for one quiche? We worked it out at $12 for the entire quiche, or $2 a serve. Quite reasonable!

Can you make it even cheaper?

Busy lives and the rising cost of living are front of mind right now. So here are a few things you can do to save time and money when making a Coronation Quiche:

buy pre-made pastry. Keep any sheets you don’t use for the quiche in the freezer

use home-brand products where possible

consider vegetable shortening as it is a little cheaper than lard

buy vegetables in season and from a farmers’ market

can’t find tarragon? Try seasonal and cheap herbs such as parsley, basil or rosemary

can’t find broad beans? Try cheaper pulses such as edamame or cannellini beans.

How nutritious is the Coronation Quiche?

We also looked at the Coronation Quiche’s nutritional profile. We expressed quantities for the whole quiche, and per serve.

The healthy … and the not so healthy

This quiche has high amounts of healthy protein and fibre that come from the broad beans and eggs.

One serving of this quiche gives you about 18-25% of your daily protein and about 10% of your daily fibre requirements, which is great.

But the quiche has high levels of saturated fat, mostly from its high amounts of lard, butter and cream.

Saturated fat has been linked to an increased risk of cardiovascular events, such as heart attacks and stroke, because it raises levels of LDL cholesterol (the bad kind of cholesterol).

This LDL cholesterol can build up in the walls of arteries and form plaques, leading to arteries hardening over time and increasing the risk of heart attack and stroke. So, high amounts of saturated fats is something we want to avoid eating too much of, especially if we have cardiovascular disease. It’s also something we want to avoid if we’re trying to lose weight.

For an average Aussie consuming roughly 9,000 kilojoules per day, the recommended maximum intake of saturated fat is about 24 grams.

Just one serve of this quiche has about 17g of saturated fat, which means there’s not much wriggle room for other foods after you have a slice.

You may be better off trying this quiche instead, as it has half the amount of saturated fat as the Coronation Quiche. You could even try a crustless quiche.

4 ways to make a healthier quiche

Here are a few swaps to help make this recipe healthier:

1. Use low-fat options. If you’re watching your weight and looking to reduce the kilojoules of the quiche, swap the full-fat cheddar cheese, milk and double cream to low-fat products. This will reduce the total fat content per serve from 29.6g to 15g and save 112.2 kilojoules per serve

2. Ditch the lard. Swap the lard for butter to save 15g of total fat per serve. This may change the texture of the quiche slightly but it will reduce the kilojoules

3. Use feta. Swap the cheddar cheese for feta cheese, which has fewer kilojoules per gram

4. Add extra veggies. This increases the fibre content of the quiche and adds loads of extra nutrients.

This article originally appeared on The Conversation.

We express our gratitude to all who have supported Kerby in his journey and supported his businesses. We respectfully request privacy at this difficult time. A proper tribute wll be made in the coming week.

“The Ume restaurants will be open for business as usual, just as Kerby would have wanted. We are bereft. He was our everything. Our hearts are broken. Rest in Peace.”

Images: Instagram

Investigation launched after 38 dead puppies found on plane

Workers were confronted with a tragic scene after a Ukrainian International Airlines plane arrived in Toronto after what is usually a routine 10-hour flight.

Inside were 500 crated puppies, according to Canadian authorities. Many were dehydrated, weak and vomiting. 38 of them were found dead.

The horrifying discovery on June 13 began an investigation by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. And it shed light on a growing international market for dogs, which lawmakers say needs more restrictions.

“The number of dogs imported into the U.S. has skyrocketed in the past few years, and we are screening less than one percent of them,” Rep. Ralph Abraham (R-La.), a veterinarian who last month co-sponsored a bipartisan bill called the Healthy Dog Importation Act, said in an email. “We need to do more to protect these animals and those already in the country.“

Details about the flight remain relatively unknown, including whether Canadian authorities were aware of the large number of puppies arriving into the city. The government, which claims to have “rigorous standards” when it comes to importing animals, has released very little information.

Ukraine International Airlines said in a statement on Friday that it regretted the “tragic loss of animal life” and is working with local authorities to make “any changes necessary to prevent such a situation from occurring again.”

Animal advocates said flying 500 dogs on a single plane is unusual, if not unprecedented. Dogs require water and other care when being crated on tarmac and during flights, said Rebecca Aldworth, executive director of the Humane Society International in Canada.

“You’re relying on the staff of the airport and the airline to do that care,” she said. “If those animals are transported in those numbers, it would be physically impossible to provide that kind of care.”

The puppies flown from Ukraine were French bulldogs, according to Canadian news reports. The breed is one of several brachycephalic, or snub-nosed dogs, which are known to be so vulnerable to respiratory problems that some US airlines refuse to transport them.

"Wickedly negligent": Five-month-old left in car on 38-degree day while parents shop for TV

Parents who left their five-month-old baby in a locked car on a 38C day as they shopped for a television have been fined only $300 each.

The couple from Mt Druitt in Sydney’s west, who can’t be named for legal reasons, parked at The Good Guys in the Prospect Homemaker Centre, on January 26.

Passers-by noticed the child crying in the car alone, which prompted them to alert staff who tried to page the parents multiple times.

After receiving zero response, the staff rescued the child themselves before calling the police.

The Blacktown Local Court heard the mother returned to the car after the call to police was made.

A short while later, the child’s father was found still inside the store trying to finalise the purchase of a television.

Police revealed that the pair showed “no remorse” for their actions.

“They appeared more concerned with finalising the purchase of their electronic equipment,” said police.

Magistrate Jennifer Giles slammed the couple for leaving the baby in the car on a scorching hot day.

“You cannot leave a baby in a hot car in Australia, the kid will be dead in 20 minutes,” said Ms Giles.

“It is wickedly negligent for you to have done so.

“It is a prevalent offence and the court needs to make sure you are denounced and deterred.”

With the help of an interpreter, the father apologised before explaining that they had left the child in the car because it was sleeping, and they had turned the air conditioning on.

Both parents were charged with one count of leaving a child in a motor vehicle and causing distress but were fined just $300 each.

Can you spot this Lotto blunder?

Irish National Lotto punters have been left questioning if the lottery results are fixed after a blunder in Saturday’s Plus One.

Because there is a huge amount of money on the cards, people are wanting to know whether this mistake is just an optical illusion or it is rigged.

Can you spot the blunder?

This image from the lotto earlier. The weight and size of all Lotto balls, and the numbers, are strictly checked in advance of each draw,” she said.

“This process, as well as the draw itself, is independently observed by our auditors KPMG.”

Do you think it is an optical illusion? Woman survives 38 hours at sea after falling off cruise

A woman has incredibly survived 38 hours at sea after falling 20 metres from a cruise deck into the water, before eventually being rescued by fisherman.

The unnamed 32-year-old tourist from Shanghai was travelling with her parents on a Royal Caribbean cruise from Japan to China, according to Chinese media.

Her family and staff on the ship feared the worst after the woman failed to return from the stroll, and after 100 volunteers scoured the ship they realised that she must’ve fallen the 20 metres from the cruise deck to the ocean below.

So you can only imagine the relief her father felt when he received a call two days later telling him that his daughter had been spotted floating alive by a fishing boat.

A fisheries official told China Daily: “She was in a stable condition when I saw her, with only minor injuries on her arms.”

Her understandably relieved father told The Telegraph, “Only after I heard my daughter’s voice did I believe she was still alive. It’s a miracle.”

Local media have attributed her survival to her “strong will” and physical strength.

We’re glad she made it back alright!
