The debate: Should kids over 18 pay rent if they’re still living at home?

Parents have shared their thoughts on letting their children live at home rent free, as the age old debate of paying board stirred up some strong opinions.

A nine.com.au reader survey asked the question: Should children over the age of 18 pay board if they still live at home?

The responses were many and varied, as a whopping 72 percent of respondents said grown up kids should be contributing financially to the household.

One person commented, "If children have employment, it's important that they clearly understand that life is not free and they need to budget, show accountability and responsibility."

Another wrote, "If the children over 18 are working, then yes, they should contribute or give money to the parents to bank for them."

Others said children shouldn't be expected to pay board, and would rather their kids save money for bigger financial commitments.

"My parents did not charge me board even though I was working because they did not need the money and told me to save for my first car, which I did," one person shared.

Another wrote their parenting tactic, writing, "I let my children not pay board. So they could save for a deposit on a house. They did and they all (3) have a house."

Despite many people sharing their strong opinions on the matter, most respondents said it was not a black and white question, as many households have individual circumstances that affect their decision.

"Depends on if they are working or not and what income the parents have. My son is 22 but unemployed due to health problem, we just pool our unemployment payment so it differs for each family situation, not a YES or No answer," one reader wrote.

Another said it depends on their employment and study status, writing, "Yes if they're working almost full time, not if they're studying and just working part time to cover living expenses."

The poll comes as Aussies have struggled with a rise in basic living costs, with ABS data showing that Australian households spent a total of $1.2 trillion on what was classed as general living costs in 2022.

This sum is close to $100 billion more than in 2021.

The average household spent $130,353 in 2022, which is the equivalent of $2507 per week. This is a 20.4 per cent jump on the previous year.

More than anything in this world. Our family will never be the same. Life will never be the same."

"Each and every little thing makes me think of you. From the sun rays, to the sunset. Man who lived in airport for 18 years dies

The man who inspired Steven Spielberg’s The Terminal, as well as a French film and an opera, has died in the airport where he lived for 18 years.

Mehran Karimi Nasseri suffered a heart attack in Terminal 2F of the Charles de Gaulle airport on Saturday and died after police and a medical team were unable to save him, according to an official with the Paris airport.

Mr Nasseri, believed to have been born in 1945 in Soleiman, the then-British controlled area of Iran, lived in Terminal 1 between 1988 and 2006, at first while he was in a legal limbo because he was without residency papers and later by choice.

The airport official said the 76-year-old had been living in the airport again in recent weeks.

His first stint at the airport, when he spent years sleeping on a red plastic bench, making friends with airport workers, showering in staff facilities and spending time writing in his diary, studying economics and watching passing travellers inspired The Terminal starring Tom Hanks, as well as French film Lost in Transit and the opera Flight.

Mr Nasseri published his autobiography, The Terminal Man, the same year The Terminal was made.

Mehran Karimi Nessari lived in the Charles de Gaulle airport for 18 years, with his belongings surrounding a red plastic bench he slept on. 18 hidden voice memos features you never knew about

Make the most of your voice memo app

Your iPhone is packed with productivity tools, but you don’t have to download a dozen apps for your device to become a true time-saver. Apple’s voice memo app alone can add to your productivity, help you keep track of your appointments and reminders, and act as your personal assistant. Use Voice Memos to record conversations, meetings, lectures, and the great idea you had while driving or walking the dog. You can even record a phone call on your iPhone by using the Voice Memos app.

The app is easy to locate – you’ll find it in your Utilities folder, though you can move it wherever you’d like, or ask Siri to open it for you. It’s easy to use. It’s available on iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch and Apple computers. And best of all, it’s free. There’s no time limit for recordings (it’s dependent on the internal storage capacity of your device), so you can likely record that entire lecture without worry.

Scroll down for tips that take you beyond voice memo recording and to all of the truly cool things you can do with a voice memo app.

Record a voice memo

There are a whole host of reasons you might make good use of a voice memo app. Maybe your boss loves to have walking meetings, but you’re not quite skilled at walking, note-taking… and not running into a tree. Maybe you’re meeting colleagues for a brainstorming dinner and want to keep track of everyone’s ideas. Or maybe you need a quick way to take down a brilliant idea – for a business, a birthday gift, you name it – during your commute.

It’s incredibly easy to use your iPhone’s Voice Memos app. (Just be sure to ask the other person’s permission first!) Here’s how:

Open the Voice Memos app.

To start recording, tap the red record button.

Boom! You’re recording your conversation.

Pause a recording

While you may often record straight through without breaks, there are times when you may want to pause a recording. For instance, during an important lunch meeting with colleagues, you really don’t need to keep track of your coworkers ordering coffee at the care. This iPhone trick will also be helpful during conversations with long pauses or when you’re put on hold. Here’s how to do it:

While recording, tap or swipe up on the recording field at the bottom of your screen to bring it into full-screen view.

Tap the pause symbol to temporarily stop recording.

Tap Resume to continue.

Stop a recording

When you’re done recording your conversation, remember to actually stop the recording or you’ll be stuck with a really long voice memo that eats into your storage space. Here’s how to do it:

In partial-screen view: Hit the red square.

In full-screen view: Tap the pause button, then hit the word Done.

Delete a recording

Not every recording is worth saving. If you decide you don’t need yours, it’s easy to delete. Here’s how to do that:

In your All Recordings list, find the voice memo you’d like to delete.

Select the recording to expand the field.

Tap the trash can.

Recover a recently deleted recording

If you delete the wrong file, don’t panic. Just as you can recover deleted photos, you can recover recently deleted recordings. Just follow the steps below.

Navigate to the main Voice Memos screen.

Tap Recently Deleted.

Tap the recording you’d like to restore.

Select Recover to restore your recording.

To recover multiple deleted voice memos, select Edit in the upper-right corner. Tap all of the recordings you’d like to restore, then select Recover All from the lower left-hand corner.

One thing to bear in mind: you only have about 30 days to recover deleted files.

Save a recording in the Voice Memos app

If you’re satisfied with your recording, you’ll want to save it. Thankfully, a voice memo on iPhone saves automatically. As soon as you stop a recording, it’ll save in the Voice Memos app and appear in your All Recordings list. Yep, it’s actually as simple as that.

Rename your recording

Be sure to give your file a new name so you’ll be able to find it easily in the future. Here’s how to do that:

Tap the recording.

Tap on the name.

Type your new file name.

Save a recording to an iCloud folder

While Voice Memos automatically saves a recording, you may want to save it to iCloud for extra security – or so you can access it from any device. By following the steps below, you’ll ensure your voice memo remains in the app and in your chosen folder.

Tap the recording you want to move.

Look for a circle with three dots in it. Tap it.

Select Save to Files from the list below.

Tap the folder you’d like to add it to.

To create a new iCloud folder, tap the folder icon in the top right corner.

Organise recordings in Voice Memos folders

If you use the voice memo app often, you may want to organise your recordings to make them easier to find, just as you would organise your apps for easier access. You can group them in folders, which you’ll find on the main Voice Memos screen.

Here’s how to move a voice memo to a folder:

Tap the recording you want to move.

Tap the circle with three dots in it (to the right of the recording’s name).

Select Move to Folder from the list below.

Tap on the folder you want your recording to appear in.

To create a new folder, tap the folder icon in the lower right-hand corner. Give the folder a name, then select Save. Select that folder to save your recording there.

Crop a recording

There are many reasons why you might want to crop your new file. Musicians often use the Voice Memos app and then crop out the bits they don’t want to share. One thing to keep in mind: While the crop icon looks the same as in Voice Memos as it does in other apps, the function is actually called Trim.

Navigate to your All Recordings list.

Tap the voice memo you want to crop.

Tap the button to the right of your recording that looks like three small dots in a circle.

Select the Edit Recording option.

Tap the crop tool at the top right of the file.

Drag the yellow trim handles until the section you want to keep is highlighted in yellow and the section you want to crop is in white.

Be sure to check that you’re keeping the part you want. Tap the play button to listen.

Click the Trim button to crop everything except the section highlighted in yellow.

Tap save and then Done, and you’re good to go.

You can also delete an entire portion of your recording. With the section selected (it’ll be yellow), tap the Delete button. Remember, Trim removes everything except the yellow segment, while Delete removes the yellow segment.

Replace sections of a recording

If you mumbled or coughed in the middle of an important voice memo, fear not! It’s really easy to record over the bits you don’t like.

Go to your All Recordings list.

Tap the recording you want to fix.

Tap the button to the right of your recording that looks like three small dots in a circle.

Select Edit Recording.

Move your finger over the waveform (the lines that visually represent your recording) until you’re in the section of your recording you want to replace.

Tap the red Replace button to start recording. The waveform will turn red while you record.

Tap the pause button when you’re done.

Check your recording by hitting the play button. If you’re satisfied, tap Done to save your changes.

The great news: You can do this in as many places as you like to make sure you’re happy with the entire recording.

Speed up or slow down a recording

If a fast or slow talker is making your voice memo sound weird, or if you need to speed up or slow down a section of music, you can do that easily with the voice memo app.

Navigate to your All Recordings list.

Tap the audio file you want to speed up or slow down.

You’ll see an icon in the bottom left corner that looks like a synthesizer, or three lines with buttons. Tap the icon.

Under Playback Speed, move the horizontal slider to the left (toward the tortoise icon) to slow down the playback speed of your recording. Move it to the right (toward the hare) to speed up your recording.

Tap the X at the top right of the box to close the screen.

Press play on your recording to test the new speed.

If you’re not happy with the way it sounds, return to the Playback Speed function and select the blue Reset option.

When you’re happy with the recording, tap the X to close the screen again.

Automatically skip silences in a recording

Unlike in real life, it’s really easy to remove awkward silences from recordings in your Voice Memos app.

Tap the audio file you want to edit.

Tap the icon in the lower-left corner that looks like a synthesiser (three stacked lines, each with a knob).

Toggle on the Skip Silence button.

Tap the X icon.

Tap the play button to listen to the recording and see if you like the way it sounds.

Enhance a recording

While writing this article, I was typing in the background. I also coughed quite a few times, which didn’t sound amazing on my recording. If you have street noises or other background sounds on your voice memo or just want to create a more professional recording, you can easily enhance it, just as I did.

Tap the audio file you want to edit.

Tap the icon in the lower-left corner that looks like a synthesiser (three stacked lines, each with a knob).

Toggle on the Enhance Recording button.

Tap the X icon.

Tap the play button to listen to the recording and see if you like the way it sounds.

Duplicate a recording

Before you edit any recording, you probably should make a backup. That way, if you end up hating your edits, you always have a fresh copy of the original. It’s also helpful if you want to compare the original with the edits.

Go to your All Recordings list.

Tap the recording you want to duplicate.

Tap the button to the right of your recording that looks like three small dots inside a circle.

Select Duplicate from the list.

The copy of your recording will appear directly below the original with the word “copy” added to the file name. Tap the file to change the file name.

Copy a recording

I like to keep copies of all my important files in several places. If a file becomes corrupted, I can head to my backup and work from there. Here’s how to copy a recording in your iPhone Voice Memos app.

Go to your All Recordings list.

Tap the recording you want to copy.

Tap the button to the right of your recording that looks like three small dots in a circle.

Select Copy from the list.

From there, you can paste the voice memo into an email or text to send to yourself (or someone else) as a backup.

Share a recording

There are many reasons why you might want to share your recording. Maybe your colleagues want a copy of that daylong meeting you recorded or you’re sending your audio notes to someone for transcription. The Voice Memos app makes sharing your file super simple; just follow the steps below.

Navigate to your All Recordings list.

Tap the file you want to share.

Tap the button to the right of your recording that looks like three small dots in a circle.

Select Share from the options below.

Select how you’d like to share this file, such as via email, text, or AirDrop.

Record a phone call

Maybe you’re speaking with a lawyer and want to catch every last detail. Or maybe you’re interviewing someone. Whatever your reason, it’s helpful to know how to record a phone conversation. Apple doesn’t make that easy – you can’t record a call in Voice Memos while you’re on your phone. But there’s a workaround: Use two devices.

Open the Voice Memos app on your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch, or Mac computer.

Start recording by tapping the red record button.

Make your phone call from a different phone. Be sure to place the call on speaker so Voice Memos captures both sides of the conversation.

When your call is over, hang up the phone and stop recording.

Written by Rachel Weingarten. 18 things your electrician wishes you knew

I'm not unskilled labour

I’ve spent four to eight years in apprentice school learning how to plan, install, inspect and repair electrical products. Don’t insult my intelligence by implying otherwise.

Please don't try to do it on your own

Electricity is complicated and dangerous. If you don’t know what you’re doing, you could start a fire or get electrocuted – sometimes fatally.

Pretty much anything beyond plugging something into the wall should be left to a professional. The cost of my visit is nothing compared to the price of your safety.

Call as early as possible

Don’t call at the end of the day if you want same-day service. After 4:30 or 5:30pm, I need to pay my workers overtime, so I’ll charge you more to make up for it.

Calling first thing in the morning lets me fit your job into my day – and you’ll see a lower bill.

Look at reviews, not just price

Online reviews are useful when you’re on the hunt for a trustworthy electrician. If the person with the lowest quote also has the worst ratings, it’s worth shelling out a bit more.

If that cheaper electrician messes up, you’ll just need to call me (and my higher price) and pay more overall.

I can't fix everything

I don’t specialise in installing dishwashers or washing machines, so please don’t call me about them. You’re better off finding a plumber.

Get as local as you can

The farther I need to travel to get to you, the more time is taken out of my day – and I’ll factor that into your bill.

Finding someone closer to your neighbourhood might be able to charge you less.

If the job gets bigger, don't argue if the bill gets higher

My original quote is based on the project you called me in for. If I find out there’s actually a larger issue at hand, I’ll need to increase my price to match the scope of the project.

I’m not ripping you off, I’m just making sure I get compensated for the extra work.

Give me the pay I deserve

Some customers get sticker shock, but I’m not trying to rip you off. You only see the half-hour of work I did in your home, but that’s not the whole story.

I spent years training, and now I need to pay my crew (who went out of their way to get to your home), plus deal with marketing and other costs of running a business – and my prices reflect that.

Prepare the work area in advance

Clearing the work space and moving any furniture before I arrive means I can get in and out faster, so I can charge you for less of my time.

We're happy to help with seemingly simple tasks

Installing a ceiling fan might not sound complicated, but it’s nothing like putting together a barbecue yourself.

You’re trying to figure out the motor while hoisting a 30kg fan three metres above the floor. Call me up – I can finish the job faster and safer than you could.

Pick your own parts

Don’t describe the kind of ceiling fan or light fixture you’re looking for and expect me to find one that fits your vision perfectly.

Go to the hardware store and pick up your own items so you can guarantee they’re what you want. Friendship bubble announced for under-18s

The NSW government has announced the establishment of a “friend bubble” for people under the age of 18 within the state.

The “friend” or “playdate” bubble will allow three young people under the age of 18 to meet up for quality social time.

The members of each bubble must live within the same LGA, or within five kilometres of each other, and any supervising adults must be fully vaccinated.

The new change was signed off by the NSW government and is set to take effect from Tuesday September 21st.

Fifteen-year-old school student Alyssa Horan spoke at the daily NSW press conference to celebrate the announcement.

"Children and young people definitely want to do the right thing and also be able to socialise because lockdown is incredibly isolating for everyone," she said.

"Helping everyone feel connected will undoubtedly benefit their mental health."

Deputy Premier for NSW John Barilaro said the new bubble will come as a reward to both parents and children after months of lockdown restrictions and isolating conditions of at-home learning.

"We're in school holidays, kids have done it really, really tough, parents have done it tough," Mr Barilaro told Today.

"The mental strain, the wellbeing of our kids are important. So the crisis committee made a decision that we'll allow those kids to come together, just like we have the adult single bubbles but that's for the vaccinated.”

"For kids you don't have to be vaccinated and we'll allow some kids to come together during the school holidays."

The announcement comes as Pfizer confirms their COVID-19 vaccine is safe and works for children between the ages of 5 and 11, as well as Moderna becoming widely available for kids.

18-year-old’s tragic plea to live

Paige Simpson’s life changed suddenly after being rushed to the hospital on her 18th birthday.

The healthy, happy teen was told she had Brain Stem Glioma — a cancerous tumour mostly found to impact children and young adults under the age of 20.

While Ms Simpson was meant to undergo a “straightforward” operation in November last year to remove the tumour, the family ended up having to deal with the most “terrifying” seven hours of their lives.

“The tumour was wrapped around nerves going into her brain, making it extremely complicated and difficult,” Brisbane mum Carloyn Cross explained to news.com.au.

“We thought that was scary, but that was just the beginning.”

Carloyn said her daughter realised something was wrong when she felt as though one side of her face was “falling off”.

“The following week it just got worse so I took her to the doctor.”

Their local doctor ruled that Paige simply had Bell’s palsy, which is a muscle weakness that causes one half of the face to droop.

Carolyn couldn’t be convinced however, especially when Paige’s face began to get worse.

“I took her back to the doctor, he referred us to a neurosurgeon and after we got the results of an MRI, that’s when he called saying we need to go to the hospital straight away for the biopsy,” she said.

“We all cried so much when we found out what was happening, but Paige has been remarkably resilient.”

Paige has since undergone 12 weeks of both radiation therapy and oral chemotherapy – but sadly her efforts have been in vain as neither treatment has been successful in reducing the glioma.

Avastin – a tumour-starving therapy – works to reduce the size of the tumour and involves Paige being hooked to a drip every two weeks for 1.5 hours.

“This worked in reducing the size of the glioma, but, the glioma has also started fragmenting and is now in her spinal fluid, accumulating in her spine and the skin of her brain,” Carolyn explained.

Sadly enough, the family have just received the “awful” news that the next treatment doctors want to try is not on the Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme in Australia.

Each injection costs $6000 a fortnight.

“If she doesn’t get the injections (an immunotherapy called Keytruda) those little fragments will become bigger and they’re all throughout her spine and skin of her brain,” the heartbroken mother admitted.

“She won’t be with us for a long time if we don't get them.

“Of course we want to do everything we can to keep her alive, her life is only just getting to the good part, but the Australian Government doesn’t provide any financial benefit until we’ve contributed $70,000,” Carolyn said.

Carloyn has started a GoFundMe page to help cover the debilitating costs.

“We have already exhausted our savings and I never wanted to do crowd funding and have people feeling sorry for us, especially because Paige just wants to remain so positive,” Carolyn said.

“But it’s got to a point where we can’t do it ourselves anymore and really did need help.”

The family is hoping to raise $80,000.

Carolyn said any donation is gratefully accepted, “so that we can hit our target and keep our beautiful Paige with us”.

Images: Supplied

It was placed on the side of the apartment building, Top of the Town, in Darlinghurst on Saturday and has made history for being the largest hand-painted mural in the Southern Hemisphere.

The portrait is the size of an Olympic swimming pool and was commissioned by BINGE to celebrate Kidman’s new series.

In the theme of the series, Kidman's portrait will "come undone" as it unravels into a second artwork from today, Tuesday November 17.

The project is temporary. The building will be painted over and restored back to its original state on November 23.

The Undoing, which Kidman stars in alongside actor Hugh Grant, tells the story of a Manhattan couple who are embroiled in a murder mystery.

Daniel Andrews backs down on 18-month state of emergency

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has backed down on his plans to extend Victoria's state of emergency by 12 months.

A state of emergency gives police extraordinary powers to search, arrest and detain, was first declared in Victoria on March 16th and is due to expire on September 13th after many extensions.

Andrews initially wanted to change legislation so the state of emergency could be extended but was met with a furious backlash from the public and civil rights groups.

He eventually came to a compromise and has offered to accept a six-month extension instead of 12.

His compromise was also directly addressed by Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who asked him to reconsider his 12-month extension proposal.

The prime minister said it was "important to dispel any uncertainty and get clarity".

"People are concerned that lockdowns would extend for another 12 months,' Mr Morrison said in Canberra.

"I know that the announcement that was made by the premier the other day about that extension of the additional 12 months. I've raised our concerns with the premier about that. I did that directly. I know others have. I know Labor figures have."

The Australian Medical Association made a brutal submission to the state parliamentary enquiry into the government's handling of the coronavirus pandemic.

"The situation in Victoria has deteriorated dramatically. One senior AMA Victoria figure recently stated that it has been like witnessing a 'slow car crash'," AMA state president Professor Julian Rait wrote.

"[But] by far the largest problem in the past few months has been Victoria’s mismanagement of its hotel quarantine system," Prof Rait wrote.

"It appears that flaws in Victoria’s hotel quarantine system may be the main driver of the high number of cases of community transmission currently occurring in Victoria."

Morrison also addressed the "significant failures" over Victoria's hotel quarantine failures.

"There have been significant failures there. And that has contributed significantly, overwhelmingly - almost entirely, I'd have to say - to the community outbreak we've seen," he said.

"I have no doubt that the Victorian government feels as strongly about this as I do in terms of the impact it has had on the people of Victoria.

"They are now subject to the most horrendous restrictions that are regrettably necessary, as I said at the time. But … we can't ignore what has occurred."

Victoria’s State of Emergency to be extended 18 months

Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews has announced the State of Emergency will be extended to 18 months and lockdown restrictions will go beyond September.

Mr Andrews says the state cannot afford to lower the restrictions, and as a result the government will continue a State of Emergency which will give them the power to impose stricter lockdown restrictions.

“It is not an unlimited extension, it is nothing more than a recognition that this virus won't be over on September 30,” the premier said.

“I would love nothing more for there to be no need for any rules on September 14, but I don't think that is the reality.”

While the Public Health and Wellbeing Act 2008 only allows a State of Emergency to operate for six months, Mr Andrews says that amendments are being made to change it.

“That is the legal instrument that allows rules about face masks, about COVID safe work plans in workplaces large and small, that is the legal instrument that sits behind density limits in pubs and cafes and restaurants,” he said.

“Things like a positive person, someone who has got this virus, and required to isolate at home.

“We will extend the state of emergency provisions within the public health and well-being act for a maximum of a further 12 months.”

Mr Andrews said the decision to ask parliament to extend the restrictions was about “protecting everyone” in Victoria.

“They will need to be in place after September 13. I wish that wasn't the case. Even if there had not been a second wave these rules would still need to be in place,” he said.

“Because there is not a jurisdiction in the world that is going to just be going back to absolute normal, where there are no limits on restaurants, no limits in cafes, no masks at all, no need to isolate if you've actually got this.

“All of those very common sense provisions they need when you're beyond the 13 September. The law doesn't quite provide for that. We want to make a change.”

The premier warns that if there is no vaccine within the next 12 months, the state may have to extend restrictions again.

“We would be in a similar position to now where we would have to go back to the Parliament. No-one is asking for an unlimited five years, 10 years, run forever. 12 months we think is appropriate. That is to say it is foreseeable,” he said.

“I hope we are wrong in predicting this will still need rules in 12 months. Hopefully we have got a vaccine by then.

“But even then, the vaccine will take time to develop, manufacture, administer, and the efficacy of the vaccine, what is the life-cycle of that, does it protect you for three months, six months, here, forever, the whole notion of boosters, those sorts of things.

“So this is nothing more or less than a logical extension in time, changing the law of the state to ensure it is equal to the challenge of state faces.”

Duchess Meghan reaches out after 18-year-old woman was set on fire in alleged hate crime

The Duchess of Sussex has spoken with an 18-year-old biracial woman who was allegedly set on fire in a hate crime.

Duchess Meghan spoke with Althea Bernstein in a 40-minute phone call on Saturday to offer support and talk about self-care and being biracial, said Michael Johnson, the CEO of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Dane County.

Bernstein, a college student from Wisconsin, USA, was driving on Wednesday morning when she was stopped at a red light and heard a “racial epithet” yelled out, the police report said.

“She looked and saw four men, all white. She says one used a spray bottle to deploy a liquid on her face and neck, and then threw a flaming lighter at her, causing the liquid to ignite,” the report stated.

The young woman was able to put out the flames and drive home. She later reported the incident to the police and received treatment for her face and neck burns at hospital.

Madison Mayor Satya Rhodes-Conway described the incident as a hate crime the following day.

“This is a horrifying and absolutely unacceptable crime,” she said in a statement.

“While we are still learning more about the details, current information suggests this may have been a premeditated crime targeted toward people of colour, which makes the incident even more disturbing.”

Bernstein was connected to the Duchess through Johnson, who has been acting as the teenager’s spokesman.

“[The Duchess] applauded her for the way that she responded and pretty much said, ‘Hey Michael, give me her cell phone number. I want to stay in touch. And let me know when you want me to come back and talk to people in Wisconsin’,” Johnson told Channel 3000.

“Meghan lifted her spirits.”

Johnson shared that Prince Harry joined the call for about 10 minutes and that the Prince spoke with Bernstein about the importance of young people’s voices.

On the phone with Prince Harry and Meghan Markel the Duchess of Sussex. But they also want to learn and talk about it like the rest of us,” a source told the outlet.

Why would anyone want to sit on a plane for over 18 hours? An economist takes the world’s longest flight

Recently Qantas announced plans to conduct test flights from New York and London to Sydney and two other Australian cities.

If commercialized, these routes would become the longest in the world at about 19 hours. Qantas said it will conduct test flights with only employees on board to ensure the flights are safe and comfortable enough for paying customers.

I heard this news after finishing a round-trip on what is currently the world’s longest flight, the 18 hours and 45 minutes Singapore Airlines schedules to get from Newark, New Jersey, to Singapore, a route that began last October. The return trip is slightly quicker. Fortunately for me, there were favorable winds so each way took about 30 minutes less than scheduled.

Being aloft twice for the better part of a day gave me plenty of time to ponder the origins and economics of long-distance flights – with plenty of time to spare for binge watching.

Talk about a long flight

Pilots and airlines have been pushing the boundaries of flight times since the earliest days of air travel. In fact, 19 hours is rather quick for the industry’s trailblazers.

The first plane to make it across the Pacific took off from Oakland, California, in 1928. It took the aircraft, dubbed the “Southern Cross,” three long flights to get to its final destination in Australia: 27 and a half hours to Hawaii, 34 and a half hours to Fiji and a final 21 and a half miles to Brisbane. In all, the pilot and his crew covered about 7,000 miles in 10 days – all without losing any luggage.

A few years later, in 1931, two daredevils in search of a US$25,000 prize flew from Tokyo to the state of Washington in the first nonstop flight over the Pacific Ocean. To save weight and fuel, the pilots even threw out their landing gear after takeoff. When they reached the U.S., they crash landed – but survived to claim the prize. The flight took 41 hours and covered more than 5,500 miles.

These super-long flights, of course, were taken by daredevil pilots with no passengers. And they were very dangerous. One of the most famous aviation failures involved Amelia Earhart, who disappeared in 1937 while attempting to cross part of the Pacific on a world circling flight.

Six days and 60 hours

The first service to ferry paying customers across the Pacific was created by Pan Am in October 1936.

The trip started from San Francisco and ended in Manila, capital of the Philippines. It took six days and about 60 hours of flying time. The plane flew during the day and made stops in Hawaii, Midway, Wake and Guam at night. The longest leg, from San Francisco to Hawaii, took 18 and a half hours.

Pam Am’s planes, called the “Clippers,” didn’t need airports. They were specially designed to take off and land in the water. The planes were also quite luxurious and even had separate areas for eating and sleeping.

But all that luxury while spanning the globe was quite expensive.

The one-way fare from San Francisco to Manila was $950, or $17,400 in today’s dollars.

Fortunately, the cost of flying these long routes – in terms of both money and time – has come down dramatically. These days you can fly direct from San Francisco to Manila in business class for around $3,000, including the return flight. The trip to Manila takes just 14 hours.

Today’s flights are also a lot safer. The concern for many passengers is not crashing but instead health risks like deep vein thrombosis, a type of blood clot.

Saving time, money and bags

Still, even if things have improved, I think most of us agree that flying is not fun. Airlines regularly rank near the bottom among industries in customer satisfaction surveys.

So why would we want to increase the amount of time spent 30,000 feet above the ground in a metal tube with wings?

For one thing, it means less total travel time. For example, my flight to Singapore would have taken three and a half hours longer with a layover in Hong Kong.

But if you’re someone who might prefer a break during a long flight halfway around the world, a more practical benefit is that removing the connection also reduces the chance your luggage is lost, since bags are handled fewer times. Almost half of all bags delayed in 2017 were a result of baggage handlers missing connections.

Flying a full plane load of passengers directly also saves airlines money – which often translates into lower prices for consumers too. An extra layover at a major airport can be expensive, with fees for landing, takeoff, parking, noise abatement and security. Airports also charge extra for optional services like cleaning, towing and providing electricity to a plane while it is parked at the gate.

Expect more ultra-long flights

One thing that was interesting about the Qantas announcement is all the research it plans to do during its test flights – scheduled for October through December – on the passengers themselves.

Scientists and medical experts will monitor sleep patterns, food and beverage consumption, lighting, physical movement and in-flight entertainment to assess their impact on health and well-being – and prevent any blood clots in the legs.

Using this data, Qantas hopes to make ultra-long flying a more pleasant experience. After all, the main reason to take a single 19-hour flight is to arrive faster and feeling better than taking multiple flights to the same destination.

Whether you love or hate flying, expect longer flights in the future as more efficient planes allow airlines to go ever farther. Given we seem to be wired for binge watching, I don’t think this trend is so bad.

I could have actually used a longer flight. My effort to binge the second season of “Star Trek: Discovery” was abruptly interrupted as we descended back into Newark, with just 10 minutes left in the final episode.

Written by Jay L. Want to live to 100? Follow these 18 simple rules

Follow these 18 simple rules and you won’t just live longer—you’ll make those (many, many) years count.

1. Stop smoking

Four years after doing so, your chance of having a heart attack falls to that of someone who has never smoked.

After ten years, your lung cancer risk drops to nearly that of a nonsmoker.

2. Exercise daily

Thirty minutes of activity is all that’s necessary. Three ten-minute walks will do it.

3. Eat your produce

Fruit, vegetables … whatever your favourites are, just make sure you eat them every day.

4. Get screened

No need to go test-crazy; just get the health screenings recommended for your stage of life.

Check with your doctor to make sure you’re up-to-date.

Just be honest. How much you smoke, drink, eat, exercise and whether you use protection during sex or while out in the sun matters.

5. Make sleep a priority

For most adults who want to live to 100, that means seven to eight hours every night.

If you have a tough time turning off the light, remember that sleep deprivation raises the risk of heart disease, cancer, and more.

6. Ask your doctor about low-dose aspirin

Heart attack, stroke, even cancer—a single 81 mg tablet per day may fight them all.

(Aspirin comes with risks, though, so don’t start on your own.)

If you’re older, you are at risk from the major problem of over-prescribing.

7. Know your blood pressure numbers

It’s not called the silent killer just to give your life a little more drama.

Keep yours under 120/80 if you want to live to 100.

8. Stay connected

Loneliness is another form of stress.

Friends, family, and furry pets help you feel loved.

9. Cut back on saturated fat

It’s the raw material your body uses for producing LDL, bad cholesterol.

For decades, doctors and medical organisations have viewed saturated fat as the raw material for a heart attack.

10. Get help for depression

It doesn’t just feel bad; it does bad things to your body.

In fact, when tacked onto diabetes and heart disease, it increases risk of early death by as much as 30 percent.

11. Manage your stress

The doctors we surveyed say that living with uncontrolled stress is more destructive to your health than being 30 pounds overweight.

12. Have a higher purpose

As one physician advised, “Strive to achieve something bigger than yourself.”

By giving back, you give to yourself.

Just try to keep your energy levels up for the personal journey ahead.

13. Load up at breakfast

People in “Blue Zones”—areas with high life expectancies—eat the most at breakfast, then have little or nothing for dinner.

Front-loading calories can ward off hungry all day, keeping your weight in check.

14. Start fasting

You don’t need to go days without food.

Simply limiting eating to eight hours of the day gives your body more time to finish its six to twelve hours of digestion.

After that, it goes into “fasting” mode, burning stored fat.

15. Cook at home

Not only do you get to control the ingredients and make healthier choices, but the act of cooking is a mini workout.

New to the kitchen and want to save some money?

16. Have a sit-down meal

Multi-tasking during meals, such as while driving or rushing to get out the door, can put stress hormones in the way of your body’s ability to digest, which won’t help you live to 100.

Sit down, or better yet, gather the family together to get the bonus of social time while enjoying a meal together.

17. Save up

Most people who live to 100 are financially secure.

Worrying about money (and how to pay for healthcare) could get in the way of a long, healthy life.

18. Focus on the good stuff

Research shows people who live to 100 tend to complain less than younger adults.

Their lack of gripes could mean they’re better at handling bad situations.

This article first appeared in Reader’s Digest. For more of what you love from the world’s best-loved magazine, here’s our best subscription offer.

Inside Bruce Willis’ $18 million New York mansion

Bruce Willis and his family are looking to part ways with their luxury New York estate, as the Die Hard actor originally put his mega mansion up for sale for $18.2 million dollars in January according to the Wall Street Journal.

But now, as the market continues to soften, the home has seen a price drop to $13.83 million.

Willis, 63, and wife Emma told the publication that they are letting their Bedford Corners home go “to return to the West coast and make [their] home there".

“The only reason we are giving it up is because we are so far form our California family, which is why we have decided to return to the West Coast and make our home there,” the couple said in a statement.

“Our youngest daughter Mabel said last week that she wishes we could put lots of balloons on our house, like they did in the movie Up and send it to the West Coast. I agree, that would be perfect,” said Willis.

According to their listing agent Ann Cutbill Lenane of Douglas Elliman, the pair also own an apartment in Manhattan, where the family regularly stay.

Willis originally purchased the property for $17 million in 2014.

The home is crafted with a rustic exterior, and also features an additional three guest cottages.

With high ceilings and large windows, the estate offers an abundance of natural light.

The enormous property comes with five spacious bedrooms and the kitchen comes packed with state-of-the-art appliances.

There is also a playroom for children, a media centre/theatre and a temperature controlled wine cellar.

The outdoor area includes a pool and tennis court.

Scroll through the gallery above to sneak a peek inside Bruce Willis’ mega mansion in New York.
