Speculation swirls around the new James Bond

With Daniel Craig sipping his last shaken-not-stirred martini, the identity of the next James Bond continues to be one of Hollywood’s greatest mysteries.

After years of rumours and speculation, top candidate Idris Elba is out of the running, with Hollywood sources revealing he is prioritising other roles.

As a result, the new top contender is 26-year-old Spiderman star Tom Holland - with Ladbrokes placing odds of 40/1 on him - though it’s unclear whether he will take on the challenge.

“Tom Holland might not be the traditional Bond type, but the odds suggest he has a slight chance of replacing Daniel Craig, and plenty of punters seem to think the same,” Ladbrokes’ Alex Aparti told Express UK.

Though Ladbrokes are still placing Superman star Henry Cavill as the favourite for the next Bond, helped by the fact he auditioned for the role back in 2005 and lost out to Craig, recent reports have revealed that producers are looking to cast an actor who is under 5’10” (178cm) and looks younger than previous Bonds, per news.com.au.

Despite these new reports, bookies have rounded out the list of likely picks for the next 007 with former Bridgerton heartthrob Regé-Jean Page, Tom Hardy of Mad Max and Venom fame, and Scottish Game of Thrones star Richard Madden.

“The race to replace Daniel Craig is firmly on,” Apati said.

According to the franchise’s producers, the next Bond film is unlikely to be in cinemas until 2025, with the eighth Bond actor to be announced in the next year.

Image: Getty Images

To be able to score the theme song to a film that is part of such a legendary series is a huge honour. James Bond is the coolest film franchise ever to exist. I’m still in shock”.

Her brother FINNEAS adds: “Writing the theme song for a Bond film is something we’ve been dreaming about doing our entire lives. We feel so so lucky to play a small role in such a legendary franchise, long live 007.”

In reference to the film’s theme song, director Cary Joji Fukunaga said: “There are a chosen few who record a Bond theme. Forty-eight-year-old Craig has reportedly accepted a whopping US$150 million offer to reprise the role, despite suggesting on several occasions that he was done with the iconic character.

At the New Yorker Festival this past weekend, the actor expressed regret for his “wrist-slashing comments”. “They say that sh** sticks, and that definitely stuck. It was the day after filming [stopped on Spectre]. I'd been away from home for a year... Boo-hoo. It's a good gig. I enjoy it.

“As far as I'm concerned, I've got the best job in the world. I'll keep doing it as long as I still get a kick out of it. If I were to stop doing it, I would miss it terribly.”

What do you think of Craig’s change of heart? James Bond’s suits throughout the decades

The character of James Bond has gotten quite a few make overs in his time. We imagine that’s what happens when you’re a movie star for almost seven decades.

So we thought it would be rather fun to have a look back through time at all the (handsome) James Bonds that have graced the silver screens since the 1950s, and have a look see at how the bond uniform has changed.

The original gun barrel scene was shot with Bob Simmons in 1962 and used for two years. From there, Sean Connery took Bond by the horns and steered him past the plaid and pleather of the 1960s, 70s and 80s, until Roger Moore had his turn. By now, 007 had a very distinctive look, with a crisp white shirt and an eternally flawless bow tie.

In the late 80s, Timothy Dalton injected some more realism into the agent’s wardrobe with open shirts and light fabrics, until Peirce Brosnan tidied him up a little again in 1995.

We think today’s Bond, Daniel Craig, is making his predecessors proud. Whichever the decade, James Bond remains a suave, sophisticated gentleman with a sense of style to boot.

Scroll through the gallery above to see pictures of all the Bonds and tell us, which one is your favourite?

Related links:

The interesting evolution of the suit through the ages

5 James Bond-approved style tricks

Style tips from James Dean
