When artworks sell for upwards of $10 million, you have to begin to wonder – how could they possibly be worth so much money? While it’s understandable for ground-breaking or long-deceased artists like da Vinci, Monet and van Gogh to fetch a few mil, it’s hard to believe when modern artists (who are very much alive) start raking in the big bucks. One such example is 51-year-old Damien Hirst, who broke the record for a one-artist auction, earning a whopping $187 million by selling an entire exhibition of his work (223 pieces to be exact).

In the video above, Vox explains just what it takes for an artwork to become so valuable, and you may be surprised to learn it’s not all down to the artist.
